The Tar Heels’ sharp-shooting was too much for the foul-prone Buckeyes to overcome.

Following a shocking home loss to Wofford on Wednesday, the North Carolina Tar Heels (11-2) rebounded against Ohio State (10-4, 2-0) in the CBS Sports Classic in New Orleans, knocking off the Buckeyes 86-72 on Saturday.

In the early going of the game, both teams seemed to be able to get into their offensive sets, but the defenses made scoring difficult. The Buckeyes D got them on the board as Musa Jallow took the steal and ran the floor only to leave the ball for a streaking C.J. Jackson who laid it in.

However, at the first media timeout, with the score tied at five, the Bucks already found themselves at a significant disadvantage, as their top-scorer Keita Bates-Diop was forced to sit having picked up two early fouls of the ticky-tack variety.

In his stead, freshman Kyle Young entered the game. With KBD on the bench, Jackson picked up the scoring slack. In addition to his fast-break layup, the junior guard hit three early three-pointers to score all of OSU’s first 11 points.

The Tar Heels kept pace with Jackson, hitting three triples of their own to take a two-point lead, 13-11, by the time that the under-12 timeout rolled around.

Back from the break, Bates-Diop returned to the game, and he finally got on the board with a turn-around jumper from the left block to notch the first OSU points of the game from someone other than Jackson. On the next possession, the junior forward called for the ball down low, and then turned and attacked the rim with a left-hand layup to tie the score at 15.

After a layup by Theo Pinson, OSU grad transfer Andrew Dakich took a charge from UNC’s Joel Berry II, and Bates-Diop hit another layup and, after a timeout, completed the old-fashioned three-point play. After the made free-throw, head coach Chris Holtmann subbed out his best player in order to save him from picking up a third first-half foul. He would sit for the rest of the first half.

So much for KBD being in foul trouble. He's scored all of Ohio State's last seven points, including this tough bucket pic.twitter.com/4RbGI4XUPX

With KBD on the bench, Jae’Sean Tate finally got on the scoring sheet after stealing the ball from Jalek Felton and laying it in. Dakich hit a blow-by lay up on the next possession for the Buckeyes, then found Tate on the next trip. Tate was fouled going up, and hit one of his two free-throws.

The offense was picking up for both teams, but especially the Heels, as the clock got down to around 5:00 left in the half, as Felton and Kenny Williams hit back-to-back threes for the Heels to give UNC a 29-23 lead. In between the triples, Tate was called for an offensive foul, which sent him to the bench with two of his own.

The momentum continued to swing towards the defending champs as Jallow went for a monstrous, reverse dunk, only to have the ball sail out of his hands as he was attempting to throw it down. Felton grabbed the rebound and went the other way, finding Garrison Brooks who laid it in, giving North Carolina an eight-point lead, 31-23, with just under four minutes remaining in the half.

With UNC on an 8-0 run, Jackson was fouled attempting a fast-break layup. The foul was the second on Berry, and Jackson hit both free-throws. Seconds later, Jackson stole it from Berry bringing the ball up, and laid it in going the other way.

The Buckeyes had gone on a 6-0 run, only to have the Berry and Cameron Johnson hit back-to-back three-pointers for the Heels, getting their lead to double-digits for the first time, 37-27.

One thing that regularly prevented the Buckeyes from keeping pace with UNC was poor shot selection. After another Jackson steal, Kam Williams took an ill-advised deep jumper despite having a two-on-one man advantage. Also, Andre Wesson took a deep three early in a shot clock that went wanting.

With 4.7 seconds left in the half, Kaleb Wesson was called for a foul underneath following a suspect traveling no-call. The whistle, or lack there of, frustrated Holtmann who was called for a technical foul of his own. Berry hit one of his two technical free-throws, and then Sterling Manley connected on one of his two attempts from the Wesson foul. After the first 20 minutes, the Tar Heels led 41-27.

The story of the half for the Buckeyes was found in the foul column on the score sheet. Three starters (Bates-Diop, Tate, Jallow) had two fouls in the first 20 minutes, and Bates-Diop, who averages 31.4 minutes per game, only saw eight minutes of action in the first half.

Jackson led all scorers with 15, but 11 of those came in the first few minutes of the game. KBD was the only other Buckeye with multiple baskets. Meanwhile, UNC was finding scoring from multiple sources. In just his second game of the season following an injury, Pittsburgh graduate transfer Johnson was the only Heel in double figures with 10. However, Felton had nine, and Pinson and Berry had seven apiece.

The scoring disparity was borne out of the poor shooting from the Buckeyes. Shooting just 38.5 percent from the floor (10-26), the Buckeyes had also only hit three of eight attempts from behind the arc, a place where they had been excelling in their recent six-game win streak.

The Heels, however, had connected on nine of 16 three-point attempts (56.3%), and were 14-for-31 overall (45.2%).

What a tough finish for @OhioStateHoops.

It's even more amazing from all angles. pic.twitter.com/coLhItMQqh

— CBS Sports CBB (@CBSSportsCBB) December 23, 2017

With the second half under way, Bates-Diop got the first four points on a pair of free-throws and a floater in the lane. Following the third foul for Berry, Jackson hit one of two free-throws to get the UNC lead back in single digits at 41-32. However, on the next possession, Berry hit the Heels’ 10th three-pointer of the game to get the lead back to 12.

On the subsequent OSU possession, Jackson found Kaleb Wesson in the lane, who displayed great hands in catching it up by his head and laying it in. The bucket was the younger Wesson’s first points of the game.

After UNC extended the lead back to 12 at 48-36, Wesson hit a lumbering lay up, but couldn’t complete the “and-one,” so the lead remained at 10. Shortly thereafter, the freshman deflected an entry pass and dove to the floor to generate a jump ball.

Even though the possession stayed with the Heels, the Buckeyes had a pair of steals in the next few possessions, leading to a Jallow tie-up with the arrow pointing in the Buckeyes’ direction.

Even though he nearly threw the ball away at the top of the key, Micah Potter was the recipient of a Tate pass after a slip screen into the lane to get his first bucket of the contest. On the next UNC possession, Jackson forced an over-and-back, then hit a blow-by layup.

The Buckeye defense was beginning to flex its muscles as they forced turnovers on five of six UNC possessions, allowing OSU to get the game back to a nine-point lead for the Heels at 51-42.

However, after a Berry layup moved the lead back to 11, the Tar Heels got two offensive rebounds from Brooks on the same possession, which led to another Berry basket. Bates-Diop picked up his third foul on the bucket, and Berry converted on the free-throw attempt.

Tate hit back-to-back buckets; first on an offensive put-back, and then on a floater in the lane; to cut the deficit to 56-46. However, following an Andre Wesson foul, Felton hit UNC’s 12th three-pointer of the game.

Despite numerous mini-spurts, the Buckeyes couldn’t get the UNC lead below nine points. Every time they would seem to be on a run, the Heels would hit a three pointer to quell it.

Again, with seven minutes remaining, OSU got the lead to 10 with a pair of Kaleb Wesson free-throws, but Johnson and Pinson each hit a pair of their own to push the lead to 14 again.

Then, Luke Maye drew three Buckeye defenders in the lane and found Pinson who was streaking toward the basket who threw down a powerful dunk.

Aside from their poor three-point shooting, the Buckeyes played well. But, early foul trouble and incredible UNC shooting from deep kept the game out of reach for most of the game. With Bates-Diop on the bench for much of the first half, all of UNC’s inside defensive attention focused on Kaleb Wesson, which rendered him ineffective in the first 20 minutes.

For Ohio State to be competitive with the better opponents on their schedule, they need all of their talent to be in the floor as much as possible. Holtmann does not have the benefit of a deep, talented bench at this point in his OSU tenure. So, when you take someone like KBD or Tate off of the floor for a considerable amount of time, it impacts the effectiveness of the rest of the team.

Huge three for @OhioStateHoops. They are not going away. pic.twitter.com/tJ2Ef3NAq2

— CBS Sports CBB (@CBSSportsCBB) December 23, 2017

Despite being down by 15 with 2:15 left, the Buckeyes showed no signs of quitting. Bates-Diop hit a pair of impressive shots in the lane as well as a three-pointer, and the Buckeye pressure forced a turnover, cutting the UNC lead to 78-69 with 1:10 left.

Bates-Diop hit 13-consecutive points for the Buckeyes in the late going of the game, but it wasn’t enough; as had been the case for most of the second half, they could never get it closer than nine. Six of KBD’s 13 were on three-pointers. The team had only hit three other triples in the game.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will take the next week off before wrapping up their non-conference schedule against the Miami (OH) Redhawks next Sat. Dec. 30 at 12:00 p.m. ET from Value City Arena. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Ohio State will have a tough task if they want to extend their winning streak to six games in a row, as they’ll face North Carolina today.

Ohio State will face their last big test of their non-conference schedule today, as they’ll take on a North Carolina team that will be trying to rebound from Wednesday night’s 79-75 loss in Chapel Hill to Wofford. The Buckeyes will be looking to extend their winning streak to six games in a row, and secure their biggest win under Chris Holtmann.

After losing three of four games in late November, Ohio State has regrouped to win five in a row, with the latest victory being a 94-65 win over The Citadel. The Buckeyes never trailed in Tuesday night’s contest, leading 14-9 at the first television timeout, and eventually extending the lead to 44-23 at halftime. Tuesday night’s game was Ohio State’s 300th of the decade, and their 220th win during that span, making it the winningest decade in Ohio State history.

Keita Bates-Diop continued his outstanding early season, registering 17 points in just 18 mins. Kam Williams tied Bates-Diop for the team-high in Tuesday night’s contest, scoring 17 off the bench. Both C.J. Jackson and Andrew Dakich were able to join Bates-Diop and Williams in double figures on the score sheet for the Buckeyes in the easy victory.

This is the fourth year Ohio State has participated in the CBS Sports Classic, and the second time that the Buckeyes have faced North Carolina. In the inaugural edition of the classic in 2014, Ohio State fell to North Carolina 82-74 in Chicago. After beating Kentucky in 2015 in Brooklyn, the Buckeyes lost to UCLA 86-73 in Las Vegas last December.

Ohio State has struggled against teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 5, amassing a 37-68 record all-time. The last time Ohio State played a team in the Top 5 came in last year’s 2016 CBS Sports Classic, when they lost to UCLA. Ironically enough, the last time Ohio State beat a team ranked in the Top 5 also came in the 2015 CBS Sports Classic, when they took down Kentucky 74-67.

North Carolina isn’t likely to be ranked in the Top 5 when the new rankings are released, after the Tar Heels were shocked by Wofford 79-75 on Wednesday night. Not only did the loss to the Terriers snap a 23-game home winning streak for North Carolina, but it was the first loss at home by the Tar Heels to a non-conference foe since 2014.

The loss to Wofford spoiled the debut of Cameron Johnson, who was finally eligible for the Tar Heels after transferring from Pitt. The graduate transfer missed the first 11 games of the season with neck and knee injures. The senior averaged 11.9 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game for Pitt last year, and should provide some depth for the Tar Heels at forward behind Theo Pinson and Kenny Williams.

While Ohio State will have to be aware of Johnson, they’ll need to pay even more attention to the duo of Joel Berry and Luke Maye, who make North Carolina tick. Berry is one of the best point guards in the country, while Maye provides a presence down low that many teams have a hard time slowing down. Ohio State is going to have to be at the top of their game if the want to slow the veteran duo down and possibly pull off the upset.

Numbers To Know

2-11

Ohio State has had little success over the years against North Carolina, posting just a 2-11 record against the Tar Heels. The last time these two teams faced each other was in the 2014 CBS Sports Classic, with North Carolina winning 82-74. Ohio State’s last win in the series came back in 1993, when the Buckeyes topped the Tar Heels 80-73 in the Midwest Regional in Lexington. Roy Williams has won all four games he has coached against Ohio State as North Carolina’s head coach.

1993-94

After facing Gonzaga last month in the PK80 Classic in Portland, Ohio State will square off with the other half of the 2017 NCAA title game today. The last time Ohio State faced both national finalists from the previous year’s championship game was in 1993-94. That year Ohio State lost to North Carolina 81-68 in Chapel Hill, and later in the year fell to Michigan twice.

3,000

Today is the 3,000th game in North Carolina history, with the Tar Heels posting a 2,216-783 record in their previous 2,999 games. North Carolina is just the fifth team in history to play in 3,000 games, joining Kansas, Washington State, Oregon State, and Duke. By comparison, Ohio State has played in 2,725 games, posting a 1,653-1,072 record in 119 seasons of basketball.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Keita Bates-Diop

The junior forward has continued his torrid start to the season after spending much of last year on the shelf due to injury. Bates-Diop scored 17 points in Tuesday night’s win over The Citadel, and now has scored at least 17 in each of the last six games. There has only been one game this season in which Bates-Diop has scored less than 16 points, and that came in the loss to Gonzaga, where he scored just seven points in the blowout loss.

Kam Williams

After a frustrating start to the season, Kam Williams has started to find his shot over the last three games. Williams has posted double figures in each of the last three games, with the 17 points that he scored on Tuesday night being his season-high. Prior to the contest against William & Mary two weeks ago, Williams had only reached double figures in one game this season, the opener against Robert Morris.

North Carolina

Joel Berry II

Even though North Carolina lost on Wednesday night, it wasn’t because of the senior guard’s effort. Berry eclipsed 20 points for the fourth time this season, scoring 23 in the loss. With nine points today against Ohio State, Berry will pass Kris Lang’s 1,392 career points on North Carolina’s all-time scoring list.

Luke Maye

While Keita Bates-Diop has registered six double-doubles this season, North Carolina has their own double-double machine in Luke Maye, who has registered seven so far this season. After Maye’s 17 points and 14 rebounds in Wednesday’s loss to Wofford, Maye has now recorded double-doubles in four of the last five games. Of those seven double-doubles, on five occasions Maye has scored at least 20 points and pulled down at least 10 rebounds.

With this matchup being approximately a week away the focus will be on the defensive position battles between Ohio State and USC. This matchup will feature Ohio State and their Top 10 defensive unit against a reinvigorated defense that has won 5 straight.

Defensive Line:

The Rushmen package that Coach Johnson has installed has worked tremendously well for the Silver Bullets. The combination of Bosa, Lewis, Holmes, and Hubbard will be used to solely to disrupt Sam Darnold and cause chaos. It has worked for most of the season, and why not go back to the well.

The depth and talent of the players on Ohio State’s bench are ridiculous, and most, if not all of them are starters at any other school in the nation. That is the best part about having such a coach like Coach Johnson on to mentor them.

In the interior, Sprinkle and Jones will start the game with Hill and Landers relieving them when they get tired, and they are a pretty talented group of individuals who could all wreak havoc on the trenches.

They are 20th in the nation in total sacks and 13th in team tackles for loss. They are averaging 2.85 sacks per game and 7.7 in total yards lost. USC needs to control the trenches to succeed in this matchup because if the floodgates open, it’ll be a long day for Darnold.

Rasheem Green was once an Ohio State target when he was coming out of high school, but things did not work out. Unlike Ohio State, who runs a 4-3, USC runs the opposite, a 3-4. Rasheem Green, Josh Fatu, and Christian Rector all start for the Trojans, and they all are space eaters in the trenches.

USC is 6th in the nation in team sacks edging out the Ohio State’s unit with 3.31 sacks per game. Running a different scheme has its advantages, but the Ohio State Offensive Linemen are one of the most talented groups that USC has faced, so it will have to be determined come gameday.

Linebackers:

Both teams have an embarrassment of riches at the LB positions. Ohio State has Baker, Borland, and Worley as starters, with Jones, Harrison, and Booker in the wings. Together, they make a formidable trio for defenses and they are the second level behind the Rushmen.

Baker is a potential first rounder that can do it all. In coverage, as a spy, even as a blitzer, he will do everything he can to make an impact. Worley and Borland play well at their new positions. Worley moved back outside while Borland took Worley’s spot in the middle, and it has worked out pretty good.

USC has quite a formidable combination at LB, and I think they are the reason why their defense has so many sacks. The USC linemen occupy blockers while the LB’s knife through to seek out the Quarterback.

Led by Iosefa and Smith, this unit is scary good and they could give the right side of the line fits. They are ranked as the 56th best team in the nation in tackles for loss, but I have a feeling that they will get to Barrett a lot this game due to the inconsistency of the right side, but I do not think it will be as bad as two years ago.

They will do enough to disrupt Barrett and his decision-making process, and they will most likely take the Buckeyes backs down a couple of times in the backfield. This matchup will be between NFL Linebackers prospects, who are trying to make it to the next level.

Defensive Backs:

Denzel Ward leads another talented group of DB’s at Ohio State, along with Damon Arnette and Kendall Sheffield at Cornerback. The definition of a shutdown corner in a long line produced by Coach Coombs, he will look to stop USC’s best playmaker on offense like he has done all season.

At Safety Damon Webb, a hard-hitting safety will patrol the top quarters along with Jordan Fuller to prevent the big plays downfield.

Collectively, BIA will be looking to prove once again that they are the Best In America by locking up USC, but Arnette and Sheffield must avoid the costly penalties that have been a problem for them this season to be successful.

Jack Jones, Iman Marshall, and Chris Hawkins lead the DB’s, and they will look to stop the Buckeye speed. A lot of teams outside of Oklahoma and Iowa were unsuccessful in preventing the speedy WR’s from getting behind them, but they have the talent in the secondary to do so.

Like Ohio State’s starters, they will be tasked to stop a talented offense and they have the skills and the talent to certainly do so, but it is easier said then done. Ohio State loves those crossing routes, but I feel like in order for this unit to succeed, they must stop Dobbins and Weber, and Barrett too from establishing a balance and establishing the run.

If they successfully make Ohio State one-dimensional, they will most likely have success. If not, I think it’ll be a long day.

Position Battles:

DL: Due to the different defensive schemes, this matchup is close. From a talent standpoint, I will give the edge to the Buckeyes, but the production edge goes to USC. The biggest factor will depend on which offensive line shows up. If 2016 Ohio State shows up, USC wins easily. If this seasons team does, Ohio State wins. I am counting on the 2017 team to show up so I will give the slight edge to Ohio State.

LB: Both units have a lot of talent that is starting and on the bench. With Ohio State, they have been good, but inconsistent. Baker tends to gamble and run himself out of position and Borland is good, but young. USC will blitz like crazy and they have a lot of former Buckeye targets on their roster that will show up in the game. With that, I declare this draw because there are too many variables that could swing either way.

DB: This matchup features NFL prospects on both sides. Ward is a lock in the 1st Round and everyone else is looking to get drafted. Ohio State suffers from inconsistency outside of Ward, and when Arnette and Sheffield struggle, the game is almost unwatchable. On USC’s side, Marshall and Marvell are looking to improve their draft position with a great performance against a Top 5 team and fellow conference champion. I will give the Buckeyes the slight edge.

Special Teams: I did not forget about this unit, but it will be an important part of the game in regards to the field position battle. Ohio State has improved a lot over the course of the season, but USC’s unit is better in my opinion. If USC can dominate this phase, they will be in line for an 8th straight win over the Buckeyes, but I think they finally break the streak.

Prediction: Ohio State defeats USC 31-20

All things considered, I think the Buckeyes earn a victory in this contest. The 7 wins in a row comment on Twitter, kind of gave the “Basic Defense” vibe and the last thing the Buckeyes need is more bulletin board material after being left out of the playoffs in favor of Bama. I would love to see a decisive victory over USC, but I think both teams come out swinging with NFL draft positions being up for grabs.

A 5-star member of the 2017 class, Trevon Grimes will be transferring to Florida.

With rumors swirling about his status with the program, Ohio State freshman wide receiver Trevon Grimes will reportedly transfer to the University of Florida. A graduate of Miami’s St. Thomas Aquinas high school, the former five-star WR signed with Florida today, according to the SunSentinel. The UF compliance office is working to finalize the move now.

After taking a leave from the OSU team to deal with “family health issues” in October, Grimes said, “I just felt like [Florida] fit for me. It’s close to home. Of course, being in my situation that I’m in right now, I have to be close to home,” according to the SunSentinel.

The paper noted that being closer to family was a major reason why Grimes decided to transfer, saying of UF, “I feel like I fit in to that offense and that program very well.”

Grimes saw action in two games this season for the Buckeyes collecting just 20 receiving yards. This is coming off a senior season in high school that saw him tear his ACL against fellow Buckeye freshman Tate Martell’s Bishop Gorman High School.

We wish the best to Grimes in Gainesville.

Plus, the Buckeyes are still trying to finalize their 2018 class.

With early signing day now in the rearview mirror, the Buckeyes focus is solely on the remaining preparation for the Cotton Bowl against Southern Cal. For the Buckeye football staff however, there is still work to be done on the recruiting front as they look to seal off the rest of their 2018 class. With likely four to maybe five spots left, the 21 already signed and in the fold are more than impressive to say the least, but there’s prospects high on the Buckeyes that could help this class get back to No. 1 when all is said and done.

The State Up North is fair game

The Buckeyes recruiting efforts nationally are easily one of, if not the, top program in the country. Pulling top ranked players from every corner of the nation year in and year out has given Urban Meyer and his staff the ability to have a strong presence anywhere they would like. Fortunately, one area Ohio State has had recruiting and on the field success is in Michigan. When you have a fierce rivalry like the Buckeyes have with the team up north, one of the greatest accomplishments is being able to steal a top ranked target from right out of the rival’s backyard.

Yesterday, Ohio State once again went across enemy lines and offered Belleville, Michigan native, Julian Barnett. Barnett, a 6-foot-1, 190 pound athlete can play both sides of the ball at either receiver or defensive back. At the college level though, he is mainly being recruited as a cornerback. Obviously with the success Ohio State has each and every NFL Draft with sending their guys to top picks, Barnett will certainly entertain this latest scholarship offer.

— Julian Barnett (@_OfficialJB1) December 21, 2017

Ranked currently as the second best player in the state of Michigan for the 2019 class, Julian is also the third best overall at his cornerback position in the country. With over twenty scholarship offers to his name, Barnett will be a recruit nearly every top program is hard at work after, but it seems Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Ohio State are the early front running leaders to this point. However, you can’t count out the Wolverines quite yet being so close in location to Barnett’s high school program. Fortunately, Julian is no new name to the Buckeye staff as he has already visited campus multiple times and even camped at the annual Friday Night Lights showcase. The groundwork may already be laid out, now the Buckeyes and Meyer have to continue developing a strong relationship. If this is the case, Ohio State is certainly in this recruitment until the very end.

Let’s sort this out

One position of obvious need for Ohio State’s 2018 class is at defensive end. With a likely exit of early NFL Draft picks from this current Ohio State roster, Urban Meyer and Larry Johnson know the time is now to reload the unit that has quickly become one of the best in the country each season. Fortunately, the Buckeyes may have some serious momentum working in their favor for not one, but two top prospects at the position.

Yesterday, Jayson Oweh, a current 4-star defensive end out of New Jersey, and one the Buckeyes are very high on, took to twitter to not only express his mind, but also maybe hear a little feedback from his followers on which school he should choose. Granted this is not really a tactic Oweh will take to heart, Buckeye fans certainly didn’t take long to express their thoughts.

Blue or Red?

— Jayson Oweh (@JaysonOweh) December 21, 2017

To keep with the trend, in-state defensive end, Tyreke Smith, a Cleveland native took to twitter to increase his followers list and make no mistake about it, the Buckeye fans came ever so quickly to his beckoning call. In fact, the hashtags #TyrekeSmithToOSU and #OwehToOSU started to trend and actually caused quite a ruckus in the twitter world showing just how important these two are for Ohio State’s class.

The duo plan to announce their decisions at the Under Armour All-Aamerican game coming soon in January and it is looking more and more possible with each passing day that Ohio State could in fact land both of the dynamic duo and completely restock their shelves at the position they desperately need. With crystal ball predictions coming in for the Buckeyes concerning both parties, Buckeye fans have to like where this momentum is trending.
