LGHL Larry Johnson’s defensive line is NFL caliber from top to bottom

Larry Johnson’s defensive line is NFL caliber from top to bottom

And some of those players don’t get enough credit.

“We put the Ohio State brand on film. We were showing what Coach [Larry] Johnson helped us be and how we developed at Ohio State.”

-Ohio State defensive end Tyquan Lewis, via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

Larry Johnson has done a tremendous job in his time in Columbus. The defensive line coach has sent three linemen to the NFL since joining the program in 2014, with several more projected to go in this spring’s draft.

Often discounted among those projected draftees are defensive ends Tyquan Lewis and Jalyn Holmes. On a line where Sam Hubbard and Nick Bosa have shined alongside Dre’Mont Jones and Tracy Sprinkle, and where freshman Chase Young and sophomore Robert Landers made impact plays of their own, it is certainly easy to overlook two more outstanding linemen. However, Lewis and Holmes are more than they have been made out to be by draft scouts, as exhibited by their respective performances at the Senior Bowl Saturday. Holmes had two sacks on the day, while Lewis recorded one of his own (he was in on another sack with Oklahoma’s Ogbonnia Okoronkwo), with the pair combining for eight total tackles.

Lewis accrued 23 sacks over his last three years at defensive end for the Buckeyes, while Holmes has earned five in four seasons. While Holmes is critiqued for his lack of production, Lewis is cited for a lack of athleticism. But that doesn’t tell the whole story. Holmes often played out of position on the line, often at defensive tackle or linebacker and thereby limiting production. Lewis, meanwhile, was a workhorse in his time with the Buckeyes and was athletic where it counted (he is sixth all-time in program history in sacks).

The cruel irony is that the true differentiator of the Ohio State defensive line is its depth. While players like Joey Bosa and Hubbard are widely regarded, the likes of Lewis and Holmes are not far behind. Each had games on par with their peers, and should be in contention for an NFL Draft pick come April.

“I understand competition at its deepest level. For me personally, I try to do things that look at every angle of it. I feel like an event like this should be showcased for everyone--their fans, our supporters, and wrestling fans in general.”

-Ohio State wrestling coach Tom Ryan, via Mark Podolski, The News Herald

No. 2 Ohio State is gearing up for the biggest showdown in college wrestling this season as they prepare to take on No. 1 Penn State next week. The dual match, which features 20 wrestlers from 10 weight classes, pits eight former national champions against one another, including two, two-time national champs. However, due to some conference-level scheduling conflicts, few will actually see it live, and the match is gearing up to be highly inaccessible for students. Standing room only tickets are going for $80, while matside tickets will set you back upwards of $500. Capacity for Penn State’s Rec Hall is just 6,502.

Ohio State wrestling coach Tom Ryan is not pleased with the arrangement, stating that he is “disappointed they are not having it in a bigger venue.” By comparison, more than 15,000 people attended Ohio State’s win over then-No. 4 Iowa in Columbus at the Schottenstein Center. Ohio State athletics moved the match from St. John’s Arena, wrestling’s normal home, to accommodate for the increased interest in the match.

Penn State responded that the Big Ten, not the university, was responsible for the scheduling. The Nittany Lions will also be hosting a men’s basketball game Feb. 3 at 6 p.m.--two hours ahead of the start time for the wrestling match--with timing determined by the conference. This scheduling prevents both events from being held in the Bryce Jordan Center, which has a capacity of 15,261.

Setting Ryan off even further is the fact that no student tickets were available for Ohio State fans willing to travel to the match. The Penn State athletic department responded that 75 tickets were made available to the Ohio State team, which the department said is standard for visiting opponents.

Both Penn State and Ohio State enter this dual undefeated and with strong resumes under their respective belts. Despite the capacity and scheduling issues surrounding the day, this match could be a preview of what is to come in March in the NCAA Championships in Cleveland.

“From a leadership standpoint, I just try to do everything right and be an example so far. Stuff hasn’t gotten too crazy yet. But when stuff starts getting crazy, I’m going to have to talk guys through stuff and just try to be that leader and that vocal leader.”

-Ohio State safety Jordan Fuller, via Tim Bielik, Cleveland.com

Junior safety Jordan Fuller has had no shortage of role models in his time at Ohio State. As a freshman, he played behind future first-round pick Malik Hooker and Damon Webb. Last season, Fuller played alongside Webb at safety, having beaten out redshirt senior Erik Smith for the starting spot. It was a big question heading into the 2017 season, given the loss of Hooker to the NFL, but Fuller did not disappoint.

Now, with Webb leaving for the NFL, Fuller is the veteran safety on the team and the leader of the young safety unit. The rest of the roster contains four sophomores and three incoming freshman, including one early enrollee. Isaiah Pryor, a sophomore from Georgia, is currently projected to be Fuller’s counterpart at safety, having played in 12 games last season and making an impact mainly on special teams.

The big stage did not seem to daunt Fuller, who recorded an interception in his first collegiate start against Indiana in the 2017 season opener. He continued to play strong throughout the season, leading Ohio State in solo tackles with 49 on the year, and showed up in big games--like when he tackled Penn State’s Saquon Barkley for a loss late in the comeback win. His second interception of the year came against Michigan in the fourth quarter, effectively sealing the Buckeyes’ win. Fuller will not only be a leader in the secondary, but to the defense as a whole moving forward.

That role becomes even more crucial as Urban Meyer breaks in a new coach in Alex Grinch, who will be filling the co-defensive coordinator position and likely defensive backs coach following the departure of Kerry Coombs for the Titans. Grinch, an Ohio native, came from Washington State, where he greatly improved the Cougars’ struggling defense under Mike Leach.

You might’ve taken it easy over the last few days, but the Buckeye coaching staff sure didn’t.

Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes coaching staff moved one step closer to finishing off their outstanding 2018 recruiting class on Sunday.

Locking in a pledge from Chris Olave, the four-star wide receiver gives the Buckeyes 24 total signed or verbally committed for the 2018 cycle.

Want to know what the California speedster will add to the already stacked Ohio State offense when he arrives in Columbus next season? The Land-Grant Holy Land recruiting team has you covered.

While landing a prospect with the talents of Olave would be the highlight of most team’s weekend, Ohio State’s recruiting efforts weren’t done there.

Buckeyes dish out scholarships

Just like last weekend, the Buckeyes didn’t shy away from handing out chances to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray.

Handing out five new offers over the weekend, Urban Meyer and crew are definitely looking towards the future.

Always hitting the recruiting trail to spot talent, the Buckeyes offered the following prospects the opportunity to continue their education and playing days in Columbus.

2020 OL to visit OSU

After making the trek from Oak Park, Mich., to check out the Buckeyes-Penn State game in October, class of 2020 offensive guard Justin Rogers will make it back to the Ohio State campus on Tuesday.

Coming to the ⭕️ Tuesday

— Justin Rogers (@AllAmerican52JR) January 27, 2018

Nearly two years away from signing with a college, this trip will once again give Rogers a chance to see what it would be like to be a student athlete for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State isn’t the only school with their eyes on Justin. A four-star prospect, Rogers holds around 20 scholarship offers at the moment. Among the programs the Buckeyes find themselves up against for his commitment are Florida State, Kentucky, and many others.

Currently considered the top overall offensive guard and 25th prospect in the entire class of 2020, per 247Sports, Rogers helped his Oak Park Knights squad finish last season with a final record of 9-3 and a state playoff berth.

Quick Hits

  • Following in the footsteps of Bedford (OH) standout Davion Johnson and others, Massillon Washington (OH) wide receiver Austin Kutscher has committed to the Buckeyes as a preferred walk-on. As a senior, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Kutscher finished off his high school career on a high note by hauling in 93 receptions for 1,349 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns for the Tigers.
  • Kutscher wasn’t the only wide receiver to decide to accept a walk-on spot with Ohio State over the weekend. Not even 24 hours after Austin made his college choice known, Xavier Johnson of Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati also tweeted that he plans on playing in Columbus. A three-star prospect, Johnson reportedly held offers from the likes of Iowa State, Cincinnati, Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, and Western Kentucky throughout the process before jumping on his chance to attend the Ohio State University on Saturday afternoon.
  • Four-star class of 2019 wide receiver Ramel Keyton has 10 programs sticking out above the rest. Trimming his list down from over 20 offers, the Marietta, Ga., native is now down to Ohio State, Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina State, Alabama, Oregon, Clemson, and Florida.

The Buckeyes have their true slot receiver.

For years, it seemed nearly impossible to even consider Ohio State recruiting California effectively, due to location, and with competition from some of the nation’s top programs, like USC, UCLA, Stanford, Washington, and Oregon nearby. However, after years of nearly no attempts to reach that far west under Jim Tressel, Ohio State has finally made inroads in the Golden State under Urban Meyer, and those efforts have paid dividends.

Since 2012 (Urban’s first year), the Buckeyes have now pulled four prospects from the West Coast, up from just two from 2002-2010. That connection out west was huge for Ohio State just minutes ago, as they picked up the most recent player to join the pipeline in San Marcos receiver Chris Olave.

Olave joins Michael Thomas, Marcus Baugh, and Wyatt Davis as the only Buckeyes to come from California in the Urban Meyer era (safety Jaiden Woodbey would have made it five had he not flipped to Florida State last month).

Ultimately, while the long distance recruiting win is nice, what matters most is what Olave is bringing to Columbus. Let’s take a look at the latest Buckeye verbal commitment.

ON THE FIELD

If you’re still disappointed about Ohio State losing Tyjon Lindsey to Nebraska in the last recruiting cycle, I’ve got good news for you: Chris Olave is a very similar prospect. He’s a prototypical slot receiver in skill, with the size of a primary receiver (6-foot-1, 170 pounds).

He’s a very crisp route runner, and he’s electric with the ball in his hands—because of his quickness, and surprisingly long strides. He’s never really going to be a big play kind of receiver, as he isn’t really a burner, but he’s capable of tracking down deep throws, and could find himself at the “KJ Hill” hybrid slot/H-back position.

With his consistently good hands, and willingness to block, Olave could see the field early in Columbus, as Ohio State will have a mass exodus of receivers next season, with Parris Campbell, Terry McLaurin, Johnnie Dixon, and CJ Saunders all graduating, and Binjimen Victor, Austin Mack, and K.J. Hill could all decide to declare for the NFL as well.

IN THE CLASS

Olave is the 24th member of Ohio State’s top-ranked 2018 class, and the fourth receiver, along with Cameron Brown, Kamryn Babb, and L’Christian Smith. He's only two spots behind Brown in the 247Sports composite rankings, and saw a big boost in the last ratings change, after a huge senior season.

Olave picked Ohio State over USC, Utah, and UCLA, which is part of what makes this commitment so impressive. The Buckeyes identified Olave’s talent before most of the Pac-12, and stuck with him to the end, ultimately beating out every local program for one of the region’s best talents. That’s what good recruiting and coaching can do for you, and Ryan Day deserves a ton of credit for this one.

Olave will almost certainly be shutting his recruitment down after this, and should be signing with Ohio State on the first Wednesday in February, unless anything absurd happens between now and then.

Olave becomes the 24th member of the Buckeyes’ 2018 recruiting class

The Ohio State Buckeyes’ recruiting class for 2018 just got a little bit stronger. Four-star wide receiver Chris Olave (San Marcos, CA / Mission Hills) announced that he will be attending Ohio State. Olave made the decision known on Twitter.

Dear God, Thank You. Committed. #Zone6 #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/xH3W5dXsGo

— Chris Olave (@chrisolave_) January 29, 2018

Out of San Marcos, Calif., Olave was considered the 42nd best prospect out of the Golden State, and was graded as the 54th best wide receiver in the class, according to 247sports.

Twenty schools made offers to Olave, with a trio of Pac-12 programs (UCLA, USC and Utah) making it down to his final four. However, it was the Buckeyes that were ultimately chosen.

If you want to see what Olave brings to the table, watch his highlight clip below. The video was uploaded to Hudl in September 2017.

As things stand right now, the Buckeyes have 24 members in their 2018 recruiting class. Eight of those members have enrolled early, 14 have signed their Letter of Intent, and one (Tyler Friday) has verbally committed—in addition to Olave.

Olave joins fellow four-star receivers Kamryn Babb and Cameron Brown in the Buckeyes class. Both Babb and Brown signed during the December early signing window.
