And you get an offer, and you get an offer, and you get an offer, and you...

It’s almost finally here. We are nearing the end of the 2018 recruiting cycle as National Signing Day (Part Two) approaches next week. Thankfully, with almost all of Ohio State’s class already signed, sealed, and delivered, there shouldn’t be too many surprises come next week—but as anyone who follows recruiting knows, there’s never a sure thing.

The coaching staff has been on the road hard at work offering what seems like every 2019 prospect in the country, but it’s important to note their priority is securing the rest of their 2018 class. With a prospect or two and maybe even three still expected to join the 2018 Buckeye class, Urban Meyer and his gang will surely keep us well entertained for the time being. Hopefully, Meyer can dethrone Alabama’s seven year reign and claim the title of best recruiting class in America.

Let’s head to Cali

If it seems as if Ohio State’s coaching staff is sending out offers this week like they’re going out of style, you’re not alone. This staff is making serious headway with the 2019 and 2020 prospects, and are throwing out the offers faster and faster with each passing day.

Yesterday was more of the same. One prospect to receive a coveted Buckeye offer was the top receiver in California for the 2019 recruiting class.

Beyond thankful to receive my 21st offer from Ohio State university!! #Gobuckeyes pic.twitter.com/HJU4NxZ6BO

— mycah pittman '19 (@MycahPittman) February 1, 2018

Enter Calabasas, Calif., native, Mycah Pittman, a 6-foot, 195-pound receiver that can burn you with speed, but also go up and get the ball. While he may not have the usual height as a true jump-ball threat, Pittman’s routes are as crisp as they get at the prep level and that’s not getting past any coach as Pittman currently owns over 20 scholarship offers. Schools such as UCLA, USC, Arizona State, Florida, Cal, and more along with Ohio State have made their pitch, and while it’s certainly early in the relationship between Ohio State and Mycah, Coach Zach Smith is one heckuva recruiter and will put his best effort forward with the Cali speedster. USC may be the early favorite, but as stated many times before, there’s always a possibility when considering Ohio State.

Keep him HOME!

Yesterday, 247sports updated and came out with their new 2019 football player rankings. While the list was pretty talented obviously, there was one prospect that pretty much stole the show and has a direct relation with Ohio State not only because he is a prospect considering the Buckeyes, but more so because he lives all of 15 minutes away from campus.

Without further introduction, Olentangy Orange star Zach Harrison was listed today as the top prospect regardless of any position in the entire 2019 recruiting cycle. An incredible accolade nonetheless, this is one prospect that is literally a “can’t miss” for Meyer and his staff. With his ranking and proximity alone, Harrison is the one crown jewel for 2019 the Buckeyes need and must have.

The Top247 for the class of 2019 just got a total overhaul. @bartonsimmons touches on the notable moves https://t.co/J7slfryuoI pic.twitter.com/OkfW3NuFqj

— 247Sports (@247Sports) February 1, 2018

The 6-foot-6, 240-pound defensive end has all of the intangibles plus the aspects that can’t be taught. In fact, not many 6-foot-6 humans in the world are electronically timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.6 seconds. The five-star is currently thought to be an Ohio State lock, but with Michigan, Notre Dame, Clemson, Alabama, and more of course in the fold, Harrison is a prospect that any and everyone will be talking too.

One aspect to take note though: Harrison is unlike most prospects given his age and caliber. He won’t tip his cap to anyone on a leader and doesn’t really let the recruiting process or rankings for that matter affect him. This is one prospect that has his head on straight and one that the Buckeyes know they must keep home.

Peach State’s the move

While there is certainly no limit to how well Meyer and his crew recruit nationally, Georgia is a territory that has always been kind to the Buckeyes and, thankfully, that trend has continued each and every recruiting cycle under Meyer.

Yesterday, the Buckeyes were back in the Peach State and made an ever so rare offer to a 2021 prospect. With the 2021 recruiting cycle still in the distant future, Ohio State got a little bit of a head start to their board when they offered Carrollton, Ga., native, Chaz Chambliss.

Beyond blessed to be offered by Ohio State ! @OhioStateFB @CoachHoon @theRealBSReport #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/hLelpP3k5Z

— Chaz Chambliss (@ChazChambliss) February 2, 2018

Chambliss does not have a recruiting ranking yet due to his age, but this week alone has proved he will be one of the top prospects in the 2021 class when all is said and done. With offers from Ohio State and Georgia alone yesterday and more this past week with Michigan extending their hat into the ring, it’s pretty clear Chaz is about to really see his recruitment take off. The Buckeyes’ success in Georgia will certainly help their chances with Chaz; and with current Peach State players still on the roster, that has to only help out even more.

Quick Hits:

  • 2020 ATH, Jalen Berger (Ramsey, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) was offered by Ohio State yesterday.
  • 2019 DE, Billy Sonnier (Lafayette, LA/Northside) was offered by Ohio State yesterday.
  • 2018 in-state OLB, Chris Oats (Cincinnati, OH/Winton Woods) was reported on that he will not make an official visit to Ohio State this weekend as originally planned all but cementing him not in the 2018 Buckeye class.
  • 2019 RB, Devyn Ford (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) placed Ohio State in his top 6 along with Virginia Tech, Clemson, Penn State, North Carolina, and Oklahoma.

The first-year Ohio State coach has turned the program around a lot sooner than many were expecting.

“We have an even bigger target on our back. In addition to being Ohio State and defying expectations now w’re going to get every team’s best punch. We have to stay ready for that every possession, not just every game.”

Ohio State guard Kam Williams via Bill Bender, The Sporting News

A return to success wasn’t supposed to happen this quickly for Ohio State basketball. After the Buckeyes not only had to navigate a coaching change in June, they also had to deal with a number of transfers, which left them with a roster with very little depth and experience.

The first step to the turnaround happened in early June, when the Buckeyes were able to lure Butler head coach Chris Holtmann to Columbus. Along with Holtmann and his coaching staff, Ohio State was able to bring in Michigan graduate transfer Andrew Dakich, who has provided a spark off the bench for the Buckeyes.

It would have been easy for Ohio State to let the season spiral out of control after losing three of four games in late November, but the Buckeyes responded with wins over Wisconsin and Michigan to open up Big Ten play. Since the loss to Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Ohio State has only lost two games.

The early success under Holtmann has restored some of the pride in Ohio State basketball. Not only is attendance starting to come back after a few years of mediocre play, but there is just an overall excitement surrounding the program. Now with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the horizon next month, even brighter days after coming for Buckeye basketball.

“We have beat the living crap out of him every day in practice. We’ve got a manager when we do shooting drills and it’s a workout now. He takes the pad and wears him out. I’m usually the passer and I’m making sure Kaleb understands, ‘Listen, you’re posting to score. Use your frame to get deep post position.’”

Ohio State men’s basketball coach on Kaleb Wesson via Patrick Murphy, Bucknuts

Usually freshmen tend to wear down as their first season of college basketball rolls on, but Kaleb Wesson looks like he is getting stronger. Not only has Wesson been perfect from the field over the last two games, hitting all 11 of his shot attempts, but Wesson has only missed four of the 25 field goals he has attempted over the last four games. The uptick in play has a lot to do with Chris Holtmann stressing the importance of Wesson using his body to create better post position on offense.

The Buckeyes have been able to exploit the lack of size of some of their recent opponents, but that won’t be the case in the coming weeks. Next week the Buckeyes have to travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on a Purdue team with a couple of talented big men. Just over a week later the Buckeyes will again hit the road to take on Michigan and Moritz Wagner, who only allowed Wesson to hit one of his four field goal attempts back in their first meeting in December.

If Ohio State is going to make a deep run in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments, the Buckeyes are going to need to continue to get production like this from Wesson. While Keita Bates-Diop is the focal point of the Ohio State offense, increased contributions from Wesson will take some of the pressure off of Bates-Diop. Holtmann and the Ohio State coach staff are readying Wesson for some of the physicality the freshman will see going forward, and if he continues to respond like he has been over the last two weeks, the Buckeyes will be a tough team to beat in March.

“We’re not going to go 32-2, you know? Let’s put that to bed right now. We’re going to lose some more matches this year just because of who we are. We’re different than we were last year. It’s not about what your record is when you get to the tournament. It’s, ‘Can you win three or four matches in a row, the last three or four matches of the season and become a national champion?’”

Ohio State men’s volleyball coach Pete Hanson via Soliyah Stevens-Ogaz, The Lantern

Expectations might have been a little too high after Ohio State won the last two men’s volleyball national championships. For many teams, a 5-2 start to the season may be pretty good, but for the Buckeyes, it isn’t good enough. After beating BYU in the last two national title matches, the Buckeyes fell to the Cougars in Columbus on Jan. 13.

Ohio State followed up the loss to BYU with a loss to UCLA a week later.

At least Ohio State is starting to turn things around, as they defeated No. 9 Penn State on Sunday. With a number of new starters, the team is still learning how to play together--which can help to explain the early season losses. The team learning to trust each other is something that takes time, so some early hiccups have to be expected.

At least by the time the conference tournament and NCAA Tournament are ready to be contested, Ohio State should be in a lot better form. With the talent they have on the floor and on the the coaching staff, combined with their postseason experience of the last few years, the Buckeyes will be one of the toughest outs in the country in late April and early May.

The Buckeyes are in a battle with Wolverines and Spartans for Lance Dixon.

It’s been no secret that the Ohio State Buckeyes have made a push over the last week in sending out new offers. On Wednesday, that theme stayed the same, as more offers were sent out.

Let’s take a look at who were the latest prospects to pick up the coveted Scarlet and Gray offer.

Into the state up North

With Kerry Coombs no longer on staff, it’s a big blow to the Buckeyes in regards to their recruiting efforts in enemy territory. In the post-Coombs world, Urban Meyer and his staff will need to pick up the pace when it involves recruiting in places like Michigan.

On Wednesday, OSU went back into that state of North, and sent out an offer to 2019 outside linebacker prospect Lance Dixon. Dixon made his latest offer known on Twitter.

Blessed to Receive an offer from THE Ohio State University ⚪pic.twitter.com/NCkz3HDIgU

— A c e ™️ (@Lance__Dixon) January 31, 2018

The 6-foot-2 OLB hails from West Bloomfield, Mich., which is about 40 minutes from Ann Arbor, and a little over an hour to East Lansing. Naturally, both Michigan powerhouse schools (Michigan and Michigan State) have sent him offers already.

As a matter of fact, the Wolverines and Spartans aren’t the only Big Ten schools to send in their offer to Dixon; since Dec. 5, Wisconsin, Indiana and Minnesota have joined Ohio State as schools that have reached out to the 2019 stud.

While only a three-star, the latest offers may help push his overall grade up the charts. According to the 247sports composite, Dixon comes in as the 417th best recruit, 23rd best OLB, and 11th best prospect out of Michigan.

After making his deal known to the public, quite a few people were ecstatic on Dixon’s Twitter timeline about Ohio State being the latest school to give him an offer. Could those retweets help push the Buckeyes into the conversation for another Michigan recruit? If so, here’s what the Scarlet and Gray could be getting from Dixon if he chooses to take his talents to Columbus.

Zone 6’s latest offer

On Tuesday, OSU sent out an offer to 2020 wide receiver Porter Rooks. If you thought Zone 6 was taking a break from cranking out offers, you would be mistaken.

Wednesday brought another membership offer within the Buckeye receiving corps, as three-star 2019 WR Elijah Higgins (Austin, TX / Bowie) was the latest pass-catcher to have the chance to suit up in Scarlet and Gray.

Extremely excited to receive an offer from THE Ohio State University! #GoBucks #Zone6 ⭕pic.twitter.com/YVFnHQMK0j

— Elijah Higgins (@ehigggz) January 31, 2018

Higgins has had a spectacular final week of January, picking up six offers along the way. Texas, Notre Dame and Texas A&M were just some of the schools that sent him offers—with OSU being the ones to close out the month.

With one more year left before needing to make a college decision, 22 schools have had an interest in the 6-foot-3 Austin native. Listed by 247sports as a WR and a tight end, Higgins’ 247sports composite score is centered around his ability at WR. He comes in as the 64th best receiver in his class and 49th best recruit from the talent rich state of Texas. But if Higgins keeps getting offers in rapid succession like he has over the past week, then he may have the potential to rise up into four-star status.

Also, is anyone wishing Archie Miller had succeeded Thad Matta now?

“If it appears that both Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell are going to be ahead of him this fall, the safe bet is that Burrow then would elect to use his ability to transfer as a graduate and find somewhere he can start.”

- Austin Ward, Land of 10

It’s hard to fault Ward’s logic that Dwayne Haskins is the leading candidate to be Ohio State’s starting quarterback this fall, and it just makes sense that this assumption will lead fans to assume that Joe Burrow will transfer, and then to ask questions about what happens if Haskins goes pro after the 2018 campaign? Would Tate Martell start in 2019? Where would Matt Baldwin enter into the mix?

All totally normal, reasonable questions to ask about a program that routinely sends players to the NFL, and needs to always have a replacement waiting in the wings. But, let’s pump the breaks before we start christening Dwayne Haskins as the next great Buckeye quarterback; not because I don’t think he’s capable of that, because I think he has the ability to be that and more, but because Burrow is also a really good quarterback.

In last year’s spring game, it was clear that Burrow was the more prepared quarterback (both physically and mentally) between the two as they fought for the No. 2 spot behind J.T. Barrett. And, throughout fall camp, head coach Urban Meyer continually referenced the fact that the competition between Haskins and Burrow was close, but that the latter had a better command of the offense, given his additional year in the program.

However, we all know that Burrow was injured right before the season-opener, and Haskins ascended to be Barrett’s back-up throughout the season. Now, perhaps the additional year in the offense, and additional playing time— especially in the pressure-cooker of the Michigan game— vaulted Haskins over Burrow in terms of preparedness.

Even if that’s the case, Burrow will almost certainly still be with the Buckeyes throughout spring practice, as he will graduate in May with two years of eligibility remaining. So, of course, after his sterling performance this season, Haskins deserves to be the favorite heading into the spring, but this has been a horserace between the two from the jump, and we shouldn’t be surprised if there is more jockeying down the stretch.

“In a year or two, Indiana coming to Value City Arena to play Ohio State might feel special again, a true rivalry reignited.”

- Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Last night’s battle of first-year Big Ten head coaches was a bit of a “what might have been game” for both the Buckeyes and the Indiana Hoosiers. Former Ohio State assistant Archie Miller brought his IU squad in to face former Butler head coach Chris Holtmann’s OSU team.

When Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith fired Thad Matta in June last year, many fans were upset that (if he was going to do it) he didn’t do it earlier in an effort to attract Miller back to Columbus. However, by the time the coaching change was made, Miller had already signed on at Indiana, and Smith had focused in on Holtmann.

The rest, as they say, is history... or at least the preface to what could eventually be history for both schools. However, even at this early point in the two coaches’ B1G careers, I doubt many Buckeye fans would tell you that they wished that things had worked out differently.

As Rabinowitz notes in the article, Ohio State turned in an impressive, team victory last night, as the Hoosiers struggled for consistency. Remember that both schools finished 7-11 in conference play last year, with IU holding an 18-16 overall record to OSU’s 17-15. So, the fact that Ohio State is now 19-5, 10-1, while Indiana is 12-11, 5-6, is a startling turn around.

On Twitter during the game last night, I asked if fans were happy with the way that the coaching changes had shaken out. Unsurprisingly, the top two options resulted in 71 percent of the vote, with only 12 percent of respondents saying that they preferred Archie (that leaves 17 percent to answer “Are you dumb?” which is a fair question, and honestly how I responded to the poll).

Poll time. With the Buckeyes up 27-12 with 7:57 left, are you happy with how the IU and OSU coaching changes went?

However, with this history already between the schools and the coaches as the groundwork, should Miller and Holtmann be able to get these programs to the levels their fans would like, it could be the making of a new epic Big Ten basketball rivalry.

“Redshirt freshman Jake Hanes needed just four weeks of action to earn recognition from the conference office, named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Offensive Player of the Week.”

- Ohio State Athletics

While much of Buckeye Nation is focusing on football recruiting and the resurgent basketball team, there are a number of other exciting things happening in the world of OSU athletics.

First, there is redshirt freshman Jake Hanes earning national honors as a member of the Buckeye volleyball team after recording 6.42 points per set last week as OSU beat Saint Francis and then-No. 8 Penn State. In addition to the impressive points/set number, the opposite hitter also clocked a .452 hitting percentage and 5.83 kills per set.

Now, from a sport I know a little bit about to one that I know absolutely nothing about; last Saturday, Ohio State’s pistol team set a new program record with 6,491 points(?) in the open competition against Akron and Purdue. That number is apparently derived from a three-gun aggregate.

The new top score bested the previous mark, which was set nearly four years ago, by 24 points. The Air Pistol squad also broke a school record by carding 2,247 over the weekend. You can read more about those records here.

And, finally, if you are flipping through the various NBC channels next month, trying to find something to pique your interest during the Winter Olympics, might I suggest rooting for the Finnish women’s hockey team. Former Buckeye Minttu Tuominen will be making her third Olympic appearance for her native country when the games open up in PyeongChang, South Korea in February.
