A former Ohio State Buckeye has been given the reigns in Tennessee.

As we head into conference championship week in the NFL, the head coaching carousel is still heating up. One of those open HC spots belonged to the Tennessee Titans.

That spot is no longer vacant, as the Titans have found their guy in former Ohio State Buckeye defensive lineman Mike Vrabel.

— Tennessee Titans (@Titans) January 20, 2018

Prior to being named the Titans head coach, Vrabel spent time on the Houston Texans staff, a role he’s held from 2014-18. In 2014, he was named the linebacker coach—a title he held until 2016, when he was promoted to defensive coordinator.

Before his stops in the NFL, Vrabel was on the Ohio State Buckeyes coaching staff. In 2011, he was the linebackers coach under Jim Tressel. When Urban Meyer came to town in 2012, Vrabel pivoted to the D-line coach.

Vrabel has had a successful playing career in both college and the NFL. At Ohio State, he was named a consensus All-American during his senior campaign in 1996. In the NFL, he won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots.

For Chris Holtmann and the Buckeyes, they are off to an 8-0 start in conference play.

The Chris Holtmann era hasn’t suffered a loss yet this season in Big Ten conference play, as the Ohio State Buckeyes (17-4, 8-0) took down the Minnesota Golden Gophers (14-8, 3-6), 67-49, inside the storied Madison Square Garden on Saturday afternoon.

Propelled by a strong first half from C.J. Jackson and Kaleb Wesson, the Buckeyes cruised to victory. At one point, the Bucks biggest lead was 21 points with 5:55 left in the second half.

Keita Bates-Diop had a sluggish first 20 minutes of action, hitting just 3-of-9 shots for a total of six points. However, by the time the final horn sounded inside MSG, KBD tallied 17 points and 12 boards. His point and rebound totals were the most by anyone on the floor. Also of note: KBD needed just five points in this game to reach the 1,000 point mark for a career.

Wesson had a breakout game in New York City, scoring 15 points off 7-of-9 shooting; he also snagged eight rebounds, too.

Jackson was dialed in from long distance, sinking 3-of-7 shots from three-point range en route to an 11-point afternoon.

Minnesota’s trio of double-digit scorers in Nate Mason, Dupree McBrayer and Jordan Murphy got their points, however, it wasn’t enough to overcome the Buckeyes’ trio of point scorers.

Chris Holtmann has now won his first eight games since taking over as head coach of the Buckeyes. For a coach that’s started at a Big Ten school, that streak is the third best of all-time. Only Iowa’s Sam Berry (11-0) in 1923 and Wisconsin’s Walter Meanwell (12-0) in 1912 had better starts.

Here’s how Saturday’s game at MSG went down.

In the first half, the Buckeyes started off to a 4-0 lead behind baskets from Bates-Diop and Williams. However, Minnesota would capture their first lead of the game, 7-6, at the 16:29 mark.

A flurry of possessions later—which included Mason hitting a jumper and Micah Potter slamming the ball home—and the Gophers still held on to an early lead, 13-10, with 12:50 left before the halftime horn sounded. The difference, though, in the next few minutes, was that the Gophers were about to pull away with their largest lead of the half.

Mason knocked down a three and Murphy put away two field goals of his own to lift Minnesota to a 10-point, 20-10, lead with 11 minutes left. But, like in games before, the Buckeyes weren’t going down without a fight. A jumper from Tate, followed later by a trio of three-pointer from C.J. Jackson, and a deep ball from the land of three from Kaleb Wesson flipped the scoreboard; Ohio State paced out in front to a 26-22 lead with 6:31 left to play in the first frame.

Not soon before long, a quartet of free throws from Tate and another basket from Wesson—this time a layup—would completely flip the scoreboard, as the Buckeyes had a 10-point lead with under four minutes remaining. By the time halftime arrived in the storied Madison Square Garden, OSU held onto a 38-31 lead, behind 11-point halves from Wesson and Jackson. Bates-Diop put corralled six points in the half, but did so on 3-of-9 shooting.

Back from the break, Williams missed a jumper, but made it for it by stealing the ball from Mason and taking it the other way for a layup. If you were a fan of scoring, the next two minutes of play were rough. Dupree McBrayer clanked on a three, then Tate missed on a dunk; Murphy misconnected on a layup, which then led to Bates-Diop clanking on his three-point attempt. Two more three-point attempts didn’t connect—one from Mason and another from KBD—before a basket finally fell through. McBrayer’s jumper broke the cold streak on the floor.

But as soon as he hit his shot, the Buckeyes picked up the pace, going on a 6-0 run. Minnesota, conversely, spent the next two minutes without scoring a single point. Coach Richard Pitino burned a timeout with 15:22 left in regulation, but the damage was done: Ohio State had a 46-33 lead.

Murphy and Mason made a couple shots to bring Minnesota within 10, but the awakening of KBD was about to occur. The Buckeye forward put home a layup at the 11:44 mark of the second half—and drew a foul. He hit his free throw, and then connected on another jumper after Mason scored on a layup. Micah Potter’s layup at with 10:41 left put OSU up 55-40, which was good, as both teams went back on a cold stretch from the field.

The Gophers missed on five straight shots and went on a 3:45 scoring drought, while a Wesson layup at 8:04 increased OSU’s lead to 57-40. Wesson’s connection stopped the Buckeyes’ streak of four missed baskets.

Tate then drove in for a layup; he made the shot and drew a free throw—which he made. His made basket was the last basket we would see for the next three minutes, as made shots came at a premium. A trio of McBrayer freebies and two KBD free throws would be all the points we would see as the under-4 minute media timeout arrived at the 3:30 mark.

At this point, the Buckeyes made only two of their last 11 shots; the Golden Gophers only one of their last eight. However, the game was far enough away for the Buckeyes to walk away from Madison Square Garden with the win.

Up next for Ohio State will be Nebraska on Monday night. The game is scheduled for tip off at 8 p.m. ET, and will be back in the friendly confines of Value City Arena. BTN will broadcast the game.

Ohio State will look to stay undefeated in the Big Ten when they square off with Minnesota at in New York City at Madison Square Garden today.

With the Big Ten Tournament being held at Madison Square Garden in a little over a month, Ohio State will get a test run in “The World’s Most Famous Arena” this afternoon. The Buckeyes will be looking to add to their undefeated start to Big Ten play, but they’ll have to take on a Minnesota team whose backs are against the wall after losing four of their last five games.

Ohio State will be making their 34th overall appearance at Madison Square Garden with today’s game against Minnesota. The Buckeyes have posted a 21-12 all-time record at MSG, with an 11-6 record in the current structure. The last time Ohio State played at Madison Square Garden was back in December 2013, when the Buckeyes defeated Notre Dame 64-61 in the Gotham Classic.

On Wednesday night, Ohio State held off a late charge from Northwestern to defeat the Wildcats 71-65. Northwestern had trimmed Ohio State’s lead to just three points with 45 seconds to play, but C.J. Jackson hit three of four free throws in the last 30 seconds of the game to erase any doubt.

After scoring at least 20 points in four straight games, Keita Bates-Diop struggled to find his shot in the win over Northwestern, scoring just 10 points. The back-to-back Big Ten Player of the Week hit just four the 12 shots he attempted, but Ohio State got key contributions off the bench from Micah Potter, who led the team with 13 points, which was a season-high for the sophomore.

Ohio State has a 85-57 record all-time against Minnesota, and the Buckeyes have won both neutral site matchups against the Golden Gophers. Ohio State and Minnesota split their meetings last season. The Golden Gophers beat the Buckeyes 78-68 in Minneapolis in early January, while later in the month Ohio State beat Minnesota 78-72 in Columbus behind 19 points each from Trevor Thompson and Marc Loving.

The last time Ohio State was ranked heading into a meeting with Minnesota was back in 2015, when the Buckeyes were also ranked 22nd in the country. The Buckeyes were able to squeak out a 74-72 win in overtime over the Golden Gophers. Minnesota’s last victory over Ohio State when the Buckeyes were ranked came a year earlier in Minneapolis, when the Golden Gophers upset the 11th ranked Buckeyes, 63-53.

Early in the year it looked as if Minnesota would be one of the teams competing for the Big Ten title, as the Golden Gophers won their first seven games of the season. Since winning their first seven games of the year, Minnesota has posted just a 7-7 record.

The Golden Gophers halted a three-game losing streak on Monday with a 95-84 win over Penn State in overtime in State College, but Minnesota couldn’t build any momentum, losing at Maryland on Thursday night 77-66. The Golden Gophers went into halftime trailing the Terrapins by just a point, but they lost touch with Maryland in the second half, falling to 3-5 in Big Ten play.

Much like Ohio State, Minnesota is wrapping up a stretch of three games away from home in just under a week. Minnesota is playing three Big Ten games in six days for the first time since 1991. The last time the Golden Gophers played three straight Big Ten games on the road was back in 2002.

This year marks Richard Pitino’s fifth season at Minnesota, and it looked like the program was on the rise after last year. Pitino’s Golden Gophers posted a 24-10 record and made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013. After a strong start to the 2017-18 campaign, the program has been mired in turmoil after the suspension of reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Reggie Lynch. Along with the suspension of Lynch, Minnesota is dealing with a shoulder injury to Amir Coffey, who was averaging 14.1 points per game this year.

Numbers to know

4

Keita Bates-Diop needs just four points to become the 55th Buckeye to record 1,000 points during his career. Not only will the four points allow Bates-Diop to join the 1,000 point club, but he will also become the 28th Buckeye to score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds when he scores his 1,000th point. On Wednesday night, Bates-Diop grabbed eight rebounds against Northwestern, giving him exactly 500 rebounds for his career.

7-0

Chris Holtmann joined some select company on Wednesday night with the win over Northwestern, as he became the first first-year Big Ten coach since Iowa’s Sam Barry in 1922-23 to start his Big Ten career 7-0. The 7-0 start also marked Ohio State’s first 7-0 start in conference since the 2010-11 season, when they started Big Ten play 11-0.

70

The key for Ohio State is to get to 70 points. With Wednesday night’s 71-65 win over Northwestern, the Buckeyes are now 15-1 this season when they score at least 70 points. The only game in which Ohio State didn’t win after crossing the 70-point plateau this season came in the CBS Sports Classic, where they fell to North Carolina, 86-72. Aside from the 68-46 win over Rutgers on Sunday, the last time Ohio State failed to score 70 points in a game came in the 79-65 loss to Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

C.J. Jackson

With his 12 points in the victory over Northwestern, Jackson has now scored at least 10 points in 15 games this year, and has reached double figures in 14 of the last 17 games. After dealing with some turnover issues earlier in the season, Jackson has improved his ball security, dishing out 33 assists while only turning the basketball over 11 times in the last six games.

Jae’Sean Tate

By scoring 12 points last game, Tate was able to leapfrog Jim Cleamons and Marc Loving on Ohio State’s scoring list, and now Tate has 1,344 career points. Tate has now hit double figures in scoring in five of his last six games, with the only time he failed to reach that mark coming in the win on Sunday against Rutgers. This afternoon’s matchup will mark Tate’s fifth game against the Golden Gophers in his career.

Minnesota

Jordan Murphy

On a shorthanded Golden Gophers squad, Jordan Murphy is shouldering a heavy load right now. In Thursday’s loss to Maryland, Murphy registered 19 points and 14 rebounds, marking his 19th double-double of the season, which leads the country. The junior from Texas is leading the Big Ten with 12.1 rebounds per game, and he passed the 800 career rebound mark on Thursday night, putting him in seventh place on Minnesota’s all-time list.

Nate Mason

At least Murphy is getting some help from senior guard Nate Mason, who is second on the Golden Gophers in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game. Mason is a steadying hand for Minnesota, as he is fourth in the Big Ten with a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio. Mason’s 25 points in Monday’s overtime win over Penn State were a team-high.
