Tate, Jackson and Wesson will have to step up if KBD can’t go.

As the Ohio State Buckeyes take to the hardwood tonight against the Penn State Nittany Lions at Value City Arena, it looks like there is a chance that they will be doing so without their best player. According to the Ohio State Athletic Department, junior Keita Bates-Diop is dealing with an illness, and is questionable for tonight’s game.

Junior Keita Bates-Diop is questionable (illness) for the @OhioStateHoops home game vs. Penn State tonight. His availability will be determined at game time (8 p.m./BTN)..

— Dan Wallenberg (@OSUADAthComm) January 25, 2018

Bates-Diop is the Big Ten’s leader in points per game with 19.7, and currently sits in third in terms of rebounding, with 8.8 boards per contest. After missing most of last season due to a stress fracture in his left leg, Bates-Diop has returned to the court to become the single biggest factor in the Buckeyes’ reemergence as a B1G power.

Throughout new head coach Chris Holtmann’s first season, KBD has been the most consistent player, often taking the team on his back when nothing else was working. If Bates-Diop does end up missing tonight’s game, the onus will fall on fellow veterans Jae’Sean Tate and C.J. Jackson, as well as freshman Kaleb Wesson, to pick up the slack in terms of scoring, rebounding, and leadership.

OSU (18-4, 9-0) is riding an eight-game winning streak, and is looking to move to 10-0 in Big Ten play, while Penn State has lost their last two games (to Northwestern and Minnesota respectively), and currently sits at 3-5 in conference and 13-8 overall.

The Buckeyes and the Nittany Lions will tip off tonight at 8 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.

Chris Olave will either commit to USC, UCLA, Utah or Ohio State.

It was a wild day for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Kerry Coombs, one of their best recruiters on staff, left his post as assistant defensive coordinator at OSU for a position on Mike Vrabel’s Tennessee Titans staff.

Coombs was one of the main recruiters for Ohio State in numerous places—ranging from Ohio, Texas, and Michigan. Currently, one of his main missions was the recruitment of three-star running back Maurice Washington. Now with Coombs moving on to the NFL, Urban Meyer and company will need to scramble and find a replacement to fill the void.

On the bright side, though, the Buckeyes have a stacked 2018 class, and the potential to make it even more stacked come Sunday.

The Final Four for a WR

Four-star wide receiver Chris Olave (San Marcos, CA / Mission Hills) announced his commitment date for Sunday, Jan. 29 on Twitter.

Sunday, January 28th. pic.twitter.com/pSgyzG0tvc

— Chris Olave (@chrisolave_) January 25, 2018

With him being a California kid, it isn’t a surprise that three Pac-12 schools made the cut for his final four. But, those schools may be on the outside looking in, as the 247sports crystal ball has 12 of the 18 total predictions in favor of Ohio State as the school Olave will select. UCLA has four predictions and are a distant second.

At 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, Olave has the potential to be a breakout star. He has speed off the line, and can blast past defenders. 247sports ranks him as the 54th best receiving prospect in the 2018 class and the 42nd best prospect in the state of California.

Here’s a highlight clip from Mission Hills star that was uploaded to Hudl.

According to Olave’s profile page on 247sports, the Buckeyes had a visit with the star receiver on Jan. 22; WRs coach Zach Smith and offensive coordinator Ryan Day were the ones to meet with him.

A side note, though: space is becoming a problem for Ohio State. Eight-five scholarships are allowed, and the Buckeyes are walking right on the line of having too many. If Olave—or anyone else—commits, room will have to be made. We’ll keep you posted on how all this will shake out.

A good take

Transitioning to the hardwood, the Buckeyes have been on fire in conference play. Already, Chris Holtmann has the Scarlet and Gray off to an unbeaten 9-0 start in the Big Ten, and 18-4 overall.

At the top of the conference standings (shared with Purdue) and in the hunt for relatively high seed in the NCAA Tournament, the question was asked on Twitter by ESPN recruiting analyst Paul Biancardi‏ on who the Coach of the Year should be. His poll included Villanova’s Jay Wright, Virginia’s Tony Bennett (not the singer), Duke’s Mike Mike Krzyzewski and Purdue’s Matt Painter.

There was no mention of Holtmann, but that didn’t stop a Buckeye signee from commenting. 2018 guard Duane Washington, who signed his letter of intent with OSU back on Nov. 8, made his choice clear: Holtmann is the coach of the year.

Chris Holtmann. End of discussion. https://t.co/Eyl5fXUKBG

— Duane “Wiz” Washington Jr. (@TheDuaneWash) January 25, 2018

And it seemed that a decent amount of people agreed with that sentiment, too. Washington is a three-star prospect out of Chatsworth, Calif., and chose the Buckeyes over 29 other schools.

Sometimes, there are good takes on Twitter. This would be one of them.

After starting a four-game home stand on Monday with a win over Nebraska, Ohio State will host Penn State tonight at Value City Arena.

It wasn’t the prettiest win, but Ohio State was able to stay undefeated in Big Ten play on Monday night with a 64-59 win over Nebraska. In a game that was close throughout, Ohio State was able to withstand 34 points from James Palmer Jr., which was the most by an opposing player at Value City Arena. Now the Buckeyes will try and record their ninth win in a row tonight when they host Penn State.

Most of the contributions on Monday night for Ohio State came from the starters. Aside from Kam Williams, who failed to score a point, the other four starters for the Buckeyes all scored at least 12 points in the victory. Keita Bates-Diop led the way with 20 points, while Jae’Sean Tate added 17 points to pace Ohio State. The only scorer off the bench for the Buckeyes in the win over the Cornhuskers was Andre Wesson, who scored three points.

Ohio State has had plenty of success against Penn State over the years, posting a 34-14 all-time record against the Nittany Lions. In last season’s only meeting with Penn State, a late layup by Jae’Sean Tate was the difference in a 71-70 Ohio State win in State College. The Buckeyes are 17-4 against Penn State in Columbus, with the last win over the Nittany Lions at Value City Arena coming two years ago to the day, with Ohio State posting a 66-46 victory.

After Monday night’s close game against Nebraska, Ohio State figures to be in for another tight game against the Nittany Lions. Penn State has played eight conference games this season, with six of those eight being decided by single digits. The only games that were decided by double digits were a 78-63 Penn State win over Northwestern in early January, and a 95-84 loss in overtime to Minnesota last week.

The latest of Penn State’s tough losses came on Saturday to Northwestern at Allstate Arena. The Nittany Lions and Wildcats were tied at 59 with just over five minutes to go, but Northwestern outscored Penn State 11-2 down the stretch. Shep Garner led Penn State with 22 points in the loss, while Lamar Stevens was the only other Penn State player who scored in double figures, finishing the game with 13 points.

Coach Patrick Chambers is in his seventh season at Penn State, but is still looking to take his team to the next level. At 13-8 so far this year, Chambers has a good chance eclipsing the 18 wins he led the Nittany Lions to during the 2014-15 season. When Penn State beat Nebraska a couple weeks ago, it marked Chambers’ 100th win with the program. Chambers is still trying to secure his first NCAA Tournament bid with the school, and has only once taken Penn State to postseason play, when they reached the CBI Quarterfinal at the end of the 2013-14 season.

Numbers to know

18

C.J. Jackson has hit at least one three-pointer in 18 straight games. Ohio State didn’t have much success in Monday’s game from behind the arc, but Jackson’s three-pointer late in the first half was one of two three-pointers the Buckeyes hit in the game. The last time Jackson failed to hit a three-pointer in a game was back in the win over Northeastern in November.

6

Had it not been for Ohio State’s ball security, the Buckeyes might have been upset by Nebraska on Monday night. The Buckeyes tied a season-low with just six turnovers in the game, and Ohio State didn’t turn the basketball over at all in the second half. During their eight-game winning streak, Ohio State has committed less than 10 turnovers in five of those wins.

276

Ohio State will have to keep a close eye on Penn State’s Shep Garner behind the arc. The senior guard hit six three-pointers in the loss to Northwestern to raise his career total to 276 three-pointers, which is fourth all-time in Penn State history, and currently seventh among NCAA active players. Saturday’s performance marked the second time this season that Garner has hit six three-pointers in a game.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Keita Bates-Diop

The junior from Illinois scored 20 points in Monday night’s win over Nebraska, giving him eight games this year in which he has scored at least 20 points. The forward has reached double figures in scoring in all but one game this year, which was Ohio State’s first game of the PK80 Classic in Portland against Gonzaga. Bates-Diop now sits in 50th place all-time on Ohio State’s scoring list with 1,033 points.

Kaleb Wesson

Even though he was limited to just 13 minutes due to foul trouble in Monday night’s win, Wesson still scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds. The freshman did most of his damage at the foul line, tying a career-high with six made free throws. Wesson has now reached double figures in scoring in three of his last four games.

Penn State

Tony Carr

The sophomore guard is one of the Big Ten’s most improved players this year, increasing his scoring by 7.5 points per game. Carr sits just behind Keita Bates-Diop in the Big Ten in scoring this season, averaging 18.9 points per game. Carr has recorded at least 20 points in seven games this year, with his season-high of 33 points coming in the season-opening win over Campbell, and the overtime loss to Minnesota last week.

Lamar Stevens

January has been quite kind to Stevens, who is averaging 19.3 points per game so far this month. Stevens’ best performance of the year came in the 78-63 win over Northwestern, in which he scored 30 points. Stevens followed that up with 20 points in the loss to Indiana, and 26 points in the win over Nebraska. The sophomore forward is also averaging 6.5 rebounds per game this year, and has posted two double-doubles.

LGHL It won’t be easy for Ohio State to replace Kerry Coombs

It won’t be easy for Ohio State to replace Kerry Coombs
Matt Tamanini
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

usa_today_10518333.0.jpg

Not only has Coombs overseen the #BIA secondary, but he is also OSU’s resident flag planter.

“This is a tough loss for Ohio State. While the Buckeyes understand that losing coaches to the NFL and other college opportunities comes with the territory, Coombs will be difficult to replace.”

- Ryan Donnelly, Land of 10

Assistant coaches are like back-up quarterbacks, they are everyone’s pride and joy, even if it is not entirely earned. However, in the case of Kerry Coombs, the beloved status that he has amongst Ohio State fans is not only completely justified, but even the most fervent fans might not realize just how valuable he has been to the success of the the team in the past six seasons.

With today’s announcement that Coombs will be joining former OSU colleague Mike Vrabel’s staff with the Tennessee Titans, there is now a fiery, silver-haired hole in the Buckeye coaching staff. Not only is he one of the most intense and excitable (and therefore endearing) figures on the Buckeye sideline, but he played a role in getting OSU back to its current level of dominance.

A native-Ohioan, Coombs has been with Urban Meyer’s staff since arriving in Columbus in 2012, and since then has built one of the most successful defensive units in college football in the Buckeye secondary. From Bradley Roby to Gareon Conley to Eli Apple to Marshon Lattimore to Denzel Ward, the OSU defensive backfield has become a training ground for NFL first-rounders.

However, as Donnelly notes, Coombs’ biggest impact might have come on the recruiting trail as he was “planting flags.” With his decades of experience as a high school and college coach in Cincinnati, Coombs has been a stalwart in recruiting southern Ohio, as he has been in the state up north as well. However, his biggest impact might have been going into SEC territory to pluck some of the best defensive talents out of Georgia and Florida, including this year’s commits, five-star Tyreke Johnson (Jacksonville) and four-star Sevyn Banks (Orlando).

With Alex Grinch being brought on staff earlier this month, it makes sense for him to assume the secondary— and likely co-defensive coordinator-- responsibilities, but whether he (or anyone) can fill Coombs’ shoes in recruiting is yet to be seen.

@ChrisHoltmann on pulling out the W vs. Nebraska: It was really good to see, the fact that we were able to manage the ups and downs of the game. You had to grind out and find a way to battle through frustrations. I thought our guys did a good job of that.#GoBucks pic.twitter.com/mww5Y1hLnT

— Ohio State Buckeyes (@OhioStAthletics) January 24, 2018

Despite the fact that the basketball Buckeyes are sitting at No. 13 in the latest AP poll, and are still undefeated in the Big Ten, things haven’t been easy for them over the last three games, including the “ups and downs” against Nebraska that Holtmann spoke of here.

While OSU ended up beating Minnesota on Saturday in New York by 18, the Gophers raced out to a double-digit lead early, and the games against Northwestern and Nebraska that surrounded the trip to Madison Square Garden saw OSU pull away in the final minutes to keep their conference record spotless.

However, the team hasn’t looked as sharp as it did in the first six games of B1G competition, and a lot of that has to do with how they have shot. In their first six games of conference action, the Buckeyes shot 53.6 percent from the field (178-332), but in the last three games, they have shot 43.9 percent (76-173); and the disparity gets even worse when you consider their production from behind the arc.

In the first six B1G games, OSU was 50-for-112 (44.6%) from deep—including their record 17-29 against Maryland. However, in their last three games, they have combined for just 12-of-51 (23.5%) from beyond the arc.

Now, there are countless legitimate reasons for the Buckeyes’ shooting to dip as the season progresses; the competition gets stiffer as the conference slate moves on, the young roster hits the proverbial freshman wall, and as Ohio State’s stock and stature rise, they get more attention and a better effort from opponents.

However, if OSU is going to capitalize on their unforeseen stellar start to make a run at the NCAA Tournament, they will likely need to get back to their early, lights-out shooting to make the most of it.

“Through the year 2031, we’ve got at least a few big non-conference games already on the schedule for each season. So, let’s go year-by-year and spot the most intriguing games already on the schedules... The Buckeyes play Texas and Notre Dame in a three-week span (in 2022). How’s that for a schedule?”

- Richard Johnson, SBNation

It has been standard operating procedure for Ohio State football to schedule at least one major non-conference opponent each season for quite a while now. So, it is no surprise to see the Buckeyes on this list. However, what is fun for fans is that they appear in Johnson’s rundown nine times between this fall and 2025, with matchups against TCU (2018), Oregon (2020, 2021), Texas (2022, 2023), Notre Dame (2022, 2023), and Washington (2024, 2025).

However, I will throw out that a season opener against Florida Atlantic in 2019 could be really exciting if Lane Kiffin decides to stick around Boca Raton for a few more years.

Obviously most of the attention from these games will be on the home-and-home with Notre Dame, but what could be the most dramatic series is with Texas, assuming a few caveats.

1) Urban Meyer is still the Buckeye coach then. 2) Tom Herman is still the Longhorn coach then. 3) Herman has gotten UT back to national prominence in the next five years.

Assuming that all of those things are true, this could be one of the highest profile teacher vs. student college football battles in recent memory.

STICK TO SPORTS

  • Apparently Urban Meyer’s daughter Gigi is a ref in a new “Urban Football” league, which is not actually a league, but just one guy in football gear tackling another guy in football gear in public places.
  • So why is Burger King (of all places) all of a sudden fully behind net neutrality?
  • Major League Baseball decided to buck convention and make R.B.I. Baseball 18 on their own.
  • Here’s why congresswomen will be wearing black to the State of the Union on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
  • The CW’s teen drama “Riverdale” will stage the cult classic “Carrie: The Musical” this spring. Yes, that “Carrie.”

At 6-to-1 odds, Dobbins is leading the pack with Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor.

On Tuesday, Bovada released their early odds for who they thought would win the Heisman Trophy next season. Stanford running back Bryce Love led the pack at 7-to-1 odds, while Ohio State’s J.K. Dobbins had the fifth best odds at 12-to-1.

Oh, how things can change overnight.

By Wednesday, the odds took a dramatic shift. Dobbins charged up to the top of the odds table, and now sits as a 6-to-1 favorite. He’s not alone at the top of the Heisman odds board, though. Wisconsin RB Jonathan Taylor, who was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year this past season, also has 6-to-1 odds at bringing home the coveted college football trophy. Prior to Wednesday, Taylor had the second best odds at 8-to-1.

Dobbins isn’t the only Buckeye on the shortlist with Heisman odds, either. Defensive lineman Nick Bosa shows up on the Bovada list at 75-to-1 odds. Those odds have remained the same over the past couple days.

Love’s odds remain unchanged at 7-to-1, and he now sits with the third best odds in the field. Behind him in fourth is Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who guided the Crimson Tide to a dramatic second half comeback against Georgia in the national championship game.

Below is the table of Heisman odds.

Mike Vrabel, a former Buckeye himself, was named the head coach of the Titans last week.

Ever since Buckeye great Mike Vrabel was hired as the new head coach for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, it was expected that he would take either a current or former Ohio State coach with him; whether it was current offensive coordinator Ryan Day, or former OC Ed Warinner. However, today, Yahoo’s Pete Thamel is reporting that Vrabel will be bringing along an unexpected member of the OSU staff.

Source: OSU DB coach Kerry Coombs is leaving for the Tennessee Titans. He worked with Mike Vrabel at OSU.

— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) January 24, 2018

Coombs is the excitable, silver-haired assistant defensive coordinator who handles the Buckeyes’ defensive backs and special teams. With his strong ties to Ohio and the midwest, Coombs has proven to be an invaluable recruiter for Urban Meyer during his time in Columbus. A lifelong Ohioan, during his 35 year career, Coombs had successful stints as the head coach at Colerain High School near Cincinnati for 16 years, as well as in the collegiate ranks at Notre Dame and Cincinnati, amongst other schools.

With Alex Grinch coming on board earlier this month, there will now be one vacant coaching position for Meyer to fill.
