The Buckeyes look to close out the regular season on a high note against the Hoosiers.

Despite all-but losing out on the Big Ten regular season title, the Ohio State Buckeyes head into their regular season finale as one of the best teams in the conference as they face the Indiana Hoosiers this evening in Bloomington, Ind.

Earlier this week, the Buckeyes bounced back after two-straight losses for a 79-52 win over Rutgers on Senior Night in Columbus. Junior point guard C.J. Jackson led all scorers with 18 points on the night, with a total of 11 players putting up points for the Buckeyes. It was an impressive win on an emotional night, as Buckeye nation honored four seniors--Jae’Sean Tate, Kam Williams, Keita Bates-Diop (redshirt junior) and Andrew Dakich (graduate transfer)--who have made a strong impact in their final season with the program.

The performance was a far cry from what the Buckeyes were able to produce in games against Penn State and Michigan last week, when the offense struggled to find a rhythm and when Bates-Diop, previously thought to be the runaway candidate for Big Ten Player of the Year, struggled immensely against physical defenses. Despite the losses, Ohio State is having its best conference season since 2011. Even while dropping two of their last three, the Buckeyes are one game back from Michigan State in the conference standings with a 14-3 record in the Big Ten and a 23-7 overall record on the season.

Indiana, meanwhile, is sitting at 16-13 on the season, including 9-8 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are seventh in the conference standings, six games back from conference leader Michigan State. First-year head coach Archie Miller has improved things marginally for the Hoosiers this season after the departure of long-time head coach Tom Crean at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season when Crean was fired after spending nine seasons with the Hoosiers. In his final year, Crean went 7-11 in-conference.

In their last meeting at the end of January, Ohio State led the Hoosiers for nearly the entire game on the way to a 71-56 win. Tate led the Buckeyes with 16 points on the night with four players scoring in double figures. It was the first game following Ohio State’s first loss of the conference season to Penn State, and the Buckeyes responded with a vengeance. Even with an intervening matchup against Rutgers earlier in the week, Ohio State will need to bring the same sort of intensity to Bloomington as it looks ahead to the Big Ten Tournament next week.

Numbers to know

19

How many turnovers Indiana had against Nebraska. Of these, 11 were committed by the Hoosiers’ starting guards, including six from sophomore Devonte Green. Nine first half turnovers directly translated to 11 points for the Huskers in a game which Indiana only lost by nine. Turnovers have been an issue for the Hoosiers all season, but one that has been wildly inconsistent. While Indiana committed just 10 against Iowa, they gave up 18 versus Illinois (granted, Illinois is one of the best teams in the nation in forcing turnovers). IU is averaging 13 on the season, slightly worse than Ohio State’s 12, but an improvement over last season’s 15. The last time the two teams faced off, however, Indiana had just eight turnovers to the Buckeyes’ 14.

7

The days of rest that Ohio State will have before their first game in the Big Ten Tournament after facing Indiana tonight. In a season with a compressed conference schedule, there has been little time for days off. The Big Ten Tournament starts next week in Madison Square Garden a full week ahead of its normal schedule, which means that teams have had to play more games in less time. Perhaps it is good practice for the NCAA Tournament, but it will certainly help the Buckeyes--who at one point played three games in six days--to have a short break before facing the rest of the Big Ten in the conference tournament. Ohio State cannot go lower than the No. 3 seed in the tournament, which means that the team will play its first tournament game March 2, while lower seeds will have to play as early as Feb. 28.

65.0%

Indiana’s free throw percentage. That’s 13th in the Big Ten and 334th nationally. For a team whose scoring margin has been just +2.1 per game this season, those critical missed free throws mean the difference between wins and losses. Ohio State, meanwhile, has been shooting 73 percent from the line, led by C.J. Jackson’s 81.4 percent shooting. While the Hoosiers’ loss to the Buckeyes earlier this season was not that razor thin, IU still only went 10-for-18 from the free throw line, while Ohio State was 8-of-10. In their last meeting, Ohio State was able to control every aspect of that game so that it did not come down to free throws, but in a game in Bloomington at the end of a long regular season, Ohio State will need to maintain the edge from the line.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Kaleb Wesson

The freshman forward has been getting stronger as the season has worn on, but one of his best games of the year came in the Buckeyes’ last matchup against Indiana. Wesson was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field for 14 points back in January--one of two perfect shooting games for the freshman. In fact, Wesson is one of the best shooters in the conference, connecting on 57 percent of attempts from the field. Unfortunately, Wesson has missed time in two of the past three games with sprained ankles, including nearly five minutes against Rutgers. With the big man off the floor, Rutgers went on a 16-2 run that closed Ohio State’s halftime lead to five. Fortunately, the injury was not too serious, and Wesson was able to come back on the floor, but it goes to show what an impact that the first-year player has made on his team this season.

Keita Bates-Diop

Despite being the hero of most of the season for Ohio State, Bates-Diop has had a rough couple of weeks on the floor for the Buckeyes. Tuesday against Rutgers, the junior forward had just six points--his lowest total of the season. Against Michigan, he shot under 30 percent from the field, though he finished with 17 points on the day. And in the Buckeyes’ loss to Penn State, Bates-Diop could not slow down the Nittany Lions’ Tony Carr, who finished with 30 points. There’s no doubt that opposing teams have been prepping for Bates-Diop, who is second in the Big Ten in scoring with 19 points per game, but the junior had previously been able to overcome tough defense or get the ball to someone who could, thereby opening the floor back up. Holtmann acknowledged that teams have been more physical lately with his star player, and that Bates-Diop needs to do a better job of getting through those situations.

Indiana

Robert Johnson

A four-year player for the Hoosiers, Johnson has been a leader on the court all season for Indiana. He scored 16 points against Nebraska Tuesday--his fifth-straight game scoring in double figures. Unfortunately, he was the only guard for the Hoosiers who had any success against the Huskers, with Devonte Green, Josh Newkirk, Zach McRoberts and Aljami Durham combining for eight points. Previously against Iowa, Johnson scored a career-high 29 points in a comeback win on the road, and he tied a program record with nine three-pointers on the night. Throughout the season, Johnson has also Indiana’s best shooter from range, hitting 37.4 percent of his shots from three.

Justin Smith

The freshman power forward was a rare bright spot for the Hoosiers against Nebraska Tuesday, scoring 16 points off the bench to match Johnson’s total. Miller credited Smith with playing “probably as well as he has all year” on defense. Smith has been wildly inconsistent during his freshman campaign, scoring a career-high 20 points in 26 minutes against Minnesota, but connecting on just two earlier this month at Rutgers. His last outing against Ohio State fell on the lower end of the spectrum, as Smith scored just two points in 21 minutes. However, he is close to finishing his first year at Indiana on a high note, as he has scored in double figures off the bench in each of his last three games and been one of the Hoosiers’ best players in those matchups. Over that stretch, he has shot greater than 72 percent from the field.

The Buckeyes offered a 2019 QB. Is he the one they want for 2019?

One would think that a well deserved vacation would be earned by the Ohio State Buckeyes coaching staff after their 2018 recruiting haul. With ample talent at literally every spot they wanted, the only class this one out-did was the Ohio State class of 2017. When the only goal is to “one up” yourself every year, you have a serious recipe for success and Urban Meyer and his crew have mixed together a pretty successful recipe to say the least. In terms of that well deserved vacation though, well, that’s not a “thing” as the Ohio State staff has obviously wasted no time at all as they are in total pursuit of 2019 kids. With the recruiting calendar changing and moving timetables up a bit, Meyer knows there’s not a second he can afford to waste so total dedication to the class of 2019 is in full effect.

Cali QB receives big time Midwest offer

For the first time since 2007, OSU faces a QB situation where not one current roster QB has started a game. Many may fear that reality, but truth be told, with the talent on-hand in Columbus, the QB situation is not a desperate measure. In fact, many believe this next wave of talent could be even more impressive than the previous reign under center.

However you figure it, the signal caller is easily one of, if not the most important position not only on the field, but on the roster as a whole and this staff knows that. After a sweepstakes recruitment in 2018, Meyer is looking to 2019 as a year for a solid pledge and a QB he can build around rather than have to lay out the red carpet 24/7 just to keep him in the class. As Meyer and company prowl the four corners of the earth for their guy in 2019, yesterday may have helped shed a little more light on the subject as the next QB to earn an offer from the prestigious Buckeyes announced via his Twitter account.

Enter, California native Jayden Daniels and you have a 6-foot-3, 170-pound dual-threat QB that currently grades out as a very high four-star, on the brink of earning that ever so popular five-star ranking. Boasting a serious pedigree as the nation’s second ranked dual-threat QB, Jayden is also listed as the 14th best prospect in a loaded 2019 state of California. With nearly 20 scholarship offers to go along with the rest of his accolades, Daniels is a “can’t miss” type of talent and a signal caller anyone in the country would love to add to their class.

All Glory to God to say I’ve received an offer from THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY #Gobuckeyes ⚪pic.twitter.com/Y3b0bCsKaI

— JD5 (@JayD__5) February 22, 2018

The California kid is thought to be a USC lean early on, but the nearby UCLA Bruins have already claimed that Daniels is their “top guy” without a doubt. Many times, when the USC and UCLA’s of the world are in it this early and often for a home-state kid, it’s hard to pull them away from the sun and sand, but if anyone can pull top recruits out of California, Ohio State and Meyer certainly can. They’ve done it in back-to-back classes, and they look to be up to trying their luck again with Jayden. If a visit comes to fruition, all is possible, but look for the Buckeyes to at least lure him to campus before they come a serious threat to land this top ranked stud.

In need of more of the O-line guys, please

If there is a position of need in the 2019 class, it’s definitely on the offensive line. While the Buckeyes struck gold on signing day with the nation’s top offensive tackle prospect, they know they’ll need more of the same this coming year due to a heavy turnover rate in Columbus with veteran guys graduating. When one leaves, another must come on board, and yesterday, Ohio State showed they’re hot on the trail as they went after and offered another top elite offensive line talent.

William Harrod, a 6-foot-5, 305-pound monster sized talent from Fort Washington, Md., was on the receiving end of a Buckeye offer yesterday—and is one the Buckeyes would love to add to the mix. Ranked as the No. 5 prospect in Maryland for the 2019 class, Harrod is also a top-25 offensive tackle prospect in the country giving him a very well deserved four-star ranking, according to 247sports.

Blessed To Receive An Offer From THE ⭕️hio State University @CoachStudOL @OhioStateFB @RivalsFriedman @Bucknuts247 ⚪⚪pic.twitter.com/zp6ZOWCQfC

— William Harrod (@Omertawill_) February 22, 2018

With nearly 20 offers already, Harrod has schools such as Michigan, Nebraska, Virginia Tech, Kentucky and South Carolina already in his pocket with more top caliber programs certainly to come by after seeing his offer list continue to increase. Interestingly enough, Harrod is thought to be a Michigan lean as all current crystal ball predictions concerning him are in favor of the fighting khaki pants Wolverines. In a battle concerning football and/or recruiting, though, Meyer is undefeated against his greatest rival.

What does the crystal ball say?

This early on in recruiting for a class, a 247sports crystal ball pick can mean a lot of things. It can mean something a little more meaningful though when it comes from the Director of Recruiting at 247sports, Steve Wiltfong. Yesterday, Wiltfong, who is more than up to date on Ohio State recruiting at all times of day, submitted a prediction in favor of the Buckeyes for Maryland native Nick Cross. The DeMatha Catholic hard-hitting safety is no slouch either. This four-star prospect grades out as the nation’s ninth best safety and the fourth best player from Maryland. Enter current Buckeyes such as Dwayne Haskins and Chase Young and you see why Maryland is an important territory to recruit well in.

There’s certainly more than enough time for other schools to come in a play a major factor in Cross’ decision, but if it were to end sooner rather than later, the Buckeyes are sitting very pretty for this wrecking ball style defensive back. With the success Ohio State is having year in and year out in the defensive backfield, no one can blame Cross and anyone else who wants to join that position group. If a decision were to happen in the near future, a crystal ball prediction may just give that hint. However, time will only tell.

The redshirt junior has his attention on finishing out what is left of Ohio State’s season before making a decision on his future.

“I truly do love this place. This place is my home now. I will forever cherish every time I’ve had here in Columbus. You guys took me in with open arms and accepted me for who I am, through all the ups and downs, through my inconsistent play, all the losses, you guys always stuck with me and I love this place. Go Bucks.”

Ohio State forward Keita Bates-Diop via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

Even though he hasn’t officially announced his intentions for the future yet, Tuesday night felt like the last time that Keita Bates-Diop would don the scarlet and gray for the Buckeyes at Value City Arena. It’s not hard to understand why the game against Rutgers could be the redshirt junior’s last one at home.

After missing most of last season due to injury, Bates-Diop has returned with a vengeance, averaging 19 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, leading Ohio State to an incredible turnaround in Chris Holtmann’s first year in Columbus. It’s likely that Bates-Diop will be Big Ten Player of the Year, and he is being projected as a late-first-round pick in June’s NBA Draft.

Bates-Diop choosing to be honored with the seniors on Tuesday night tells you just about everything you need to know about what the future holds for the Illinois native. Even though it’s possible for Bates-Diop to return next year, it’s impossible to blame him for leaving if he is projected to be a first-round pick.

Even though his home career might be over, there will still be chances to enjoy what is left of Bates-Diop’s Ohio State career in the regular season finale, the Big Ten Tournament, and NCAA Tournament. Hopefully there will be a couple more memorable moments to cap off a great season for the Ohio State star.

“Only three women stand in the way of Mitchell becoming the NCAAs all-time leading scorer, but they will likely be just enough to the top spot out of reach. Either way, she is already the best scorer in the history of the Big Ten and Ohio State, which is not too bad of a consolation prize.”

Colin Hass-Hill, The Lantern

In the final home game of her outstanding Ohio State career, Kelsey Mitchell scored 22 points in an easy 88-54 Ohio State win over Northwestern. With just one regular season game remaining, along with the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments, Mitchell ranks fourth all-time in NCAA women’s basketball history with 3,264 points.

This year Mitchell is averaging 24.6 points per game, which means she should be able to move up on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list on Sunday. Currently Mitchell sits 19 points behind Baylor’s Brittney Griner for third place. After Griner, Mitchell is 130 points away from passing Missouri State’s Jackie Stiles for second place, and 263 away from Washington’s Kelsey Plum, who is the NCAA women’s basketball all-time leading scorer.

Mitchell has a little as three games left in her Ohio State career, but could play as many as 10 games if the Buckeyes reach the championship games of the Big Ten Tournament and NCAA Tournament. If Ohio State plays 10 more games this year, Mitchell would have to average 26.3 points per game to tie Plum.

It’s very likely that Mitchell will finish her career as the second or third leading scorer in NCAA women’s basketball history. Even if Mitchell isn’t able to reach Plum’s NCAA scoring record, she still has plenty of accolades under her belt, holding 16 Ohio State records already. No matter where she finishes in scoring for her career, there is no question that Mitchell is the best player in program history, and one of the best players in women’s college basketball history.

“When Tre came back home from that Ohio State trip, he was walking on air. That was where he wanted to go. Nick Myers didn’t know what he was getting a Tre.”

Daphne Leclaire, mother of Ohio State men’s lacrosse player Tre Leclaire via Gary Lambrecht, US Lacrosse Magazine

Over the years, Ohio State’s men’s lacrosse team has built a bit of a pipeline of players from British Columbia. Since 2003, Ohio State has brought in 12 players from Canada’s western province. The latest of those is sophomore attackman Tre Leclaire.

After competing at 16 years old as the youngest player in the B.C. Junior A League, which primarily carries players from ages 18 to 21, Leclaire was noticed by former Buckeye Logan Schuss, and recruited by Ohio State lacrosse coach Nick Myers. The head coach was already familiar with the Leclaire family after recruiting Tre’s older twin brothers.

All Leclaire did in his freshman season was record 49 goals, which was the third-most in program history, and the most ever by an Ohio State freshman. On the back of Leclaire, Ohio State made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA title game, falling to Maryland 9-6 on Memorial Day.

Ohio State and Leclaire have started off this year hot, winning all three of their contests so far. Leclaire has already put home eight goals, and handed out four assists. Ohio State was one of the first Division I programs to put an emphasis on recruiting British Columbia, with Myers making a yearly trip to the province. The 10th year Ohio State head coach might be making more trips out there if he can find more players like Leclaire.

Additionally, the Buckeyes made the top-9 for a ‘19 WR.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have already put together electric classes in 2017 and 2018. With 2019 in focus, Urban Meyer and the coaching staff are out in full force to bring the next great prospect to Columbus.

On Wednesday, the Bucks came a little closer to building up the ‘19 class. One of those recruits received an OSU offer, while another put the Scarlet and Gray in his list of top schools.

Hamilton (Gets an offer)

Safety Kyle Hamilton (Atlanta / Marist School) was the one to receive the coveted Ohio State offer on Wednesday evening. He made the offer known on Twitter.

Very excited to receive an offer from The Ohio State University! pic.twitter.com/IjYXRUCjdH

— Kyle Hamilton (@kham316) February 21, 2018

While he doesn’t have a recruiting grade yet by 247sports, Hamilton has a pretty nice collection of offers going. So far, he has 24 of them—and they include some elite schools. Over the past week, he’s had close to an offer a day. On Wednesday, the Buckeyes offer came through; Tuesday saw the arrival of offers from Missouri, Minnesota and Notre Dame; the day before that, the Clemson Tigers made their move on the Atlanta native.

There is some serious interest for the 6-foot-3, 188-pound DB. With close to a year left before he needs to decide where he will attend college, expect things to heat up on the recruiting front for Hamilton. Especially when his recruiting ranking comes out, expect even more attention to be coming his way. He’s at least going to be in the hunt for a four-star rating by the recruiting services around the country.

One Step Closer

Wide receiver Deshon Stoudemire (Stone Mountain, GA / Stevenson) put the Scarlet and Gray up on his list of top schools. Stoudemire made his announcement on Twitter in the early evening.

Two other Big Ten programs join OSU in the mix for the 6-foot-1 receiver: Michigan State and Nebraska. Ohio State was the earliest of the Big Ten trio to make Stoudemire an offer, with theirs arriving on Dec. 23, 2017. Nebraska made their offer to the Peach State prospect a month later, and MSU put their offer through last week.

The programs that are in the mix for him include SEC powers Auburn, Tennessee and South Carolina; additionally, West Virginia, Louisville and Iowa State are making a push to bring the Stephenson star to their respective program.

247sports hasn’t issued the WR a recruiting star ranking yet, by Rivals.com has him listed as a three-star. With the recent offers that have come through, and by the time 247sports completes their evaluation, we could see Stoudemire make a push to four-star status—especially if he has an electric season.

Cleveland’s Under Armour Camp may have featured some future Buckeyes

SB Nation’s own Alex Kirshner covered the Under Armour regional camp in Cleveland over the weekend, and wrote his evaluations Wednesday morning.

A handful of the prospects that displayed their football ability are seen as possible additions to the Ohio State football program. We’ll highlight a couple of those prospects.

Athlete Michael Drennen II (Dublin, OH / Dublin Coffman) was at the camp, and according to Kirshner, was “lighting-quick”. Right now, the 2020 prospect has early predictions in the 247sports crystal ball for him to commit to the Buckeyes when the time comes.

Zeke Correll (Cincinnati / Anderson) is a four-star offensive guard, and from Krishner’s viewpoint, was part of the “best position group” at the event. Correll is the No. 9 OG in the 2019 class, and holds over 20 offers. Things are looking up for Correll, as he received an Under Armour Game invitation by weekend’s end.

LGHL Ohio State’s Senior Night win is exactly what they needed

Also, meet the woman behind the second stage of Eddie George’s career.

“Holtmann went with a starting lineup of Andrew Dakich, Jae’Sean Tate, Williams, Bates-Diop and Wesson. Don’t expect to see it when the Buckeyes close the regular season Friday night at Indiana.”

-Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

Everything about last night’s victory over Rutgers was exactly what the Buckeye basketball team needed. First and foremost, they needed a win in the worst-possible way. After reaching the AP top-10 for the first time in four years, and holding a one-game lead in the Big Ten race, the squad was embarrassed in back-to-back games. So getting a solid 79-52 victory is nice to guide them into their regular season finale on Friday against Indiana.

Despite the lopsided final margin, it was not all smooth sailing for the Buckeyes. After opening up a 19-point advantage in the first half, the Scarlet Knights raced back to close the deficit to just five at halftime. However, thanks in no small part to the hot hand of C.J. Jackson, the Buckeyes reestablished their lead early in the second period and never looked back. Throughout the season, this team has overcome adversity on and off the court, and the second half show of dominance should be a reminder for them of what they are capable.

“For us to get that start in the second half was crucial, and C.J. Jackson got us going,” graduate-transfer Andrew Dakich said, according to Jardy.

However, what might be the most important part of Tuesday’s game is the camaraderie that the Senior Night festivities reinforced. At the beginning of the season, no outside of the OSU locker room (except for Dan Dakich) thought much of this team. However, since then, they have proven an entire country of prognosticators wrong, and are on the verge of a No. 2 seed in the B1G Tournament, and returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015.

What we saw before, during, and after the seniors’ final game at the Value City Arena was a reminder of how tightly knit this team is, despite the fact that some of the primary members of the squad are new to Columbus.

It also made very clear that Buckeye fans are solidly behind this team, not just for their unexpected success this year as a group, but for the heart and character that they’ve shown individually during their entire times with the program, whether it’s been one year or five.

What the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments hold is yet to be determined, but other than a much-needed rest for the thin and weary team following their run at Madison Square Garden next week, everything they need for their postseason chances might have happened at the Schott last night.

“Ideally, he’d land in a power-run system where his strengths can be maximized. His running ability really isn’t questioned. Hyde just isn’t the all-around back I thought he’d be coming out of Ohio State.”

-Eric Edholm, Pro Football Weekly

While we are technically in the early stages of the off-season for the National Football League, we all know that there isn’t really an off season in the NFL. With franchise tagging beginning this week, and the combine kicking off next week, it is a good time to start to figure out where some of your favorite Buckeyes might end up when games begin again next fall.

It’s been an up-and-down run for former Buckeye Carlos Hyde with the San Francisco 49ers. Though he’s accounted for more than 1,100 yards each of his last two seasons, he has yet to eclipse the thousand-yard mark exclusively as a rusher.

As Edholm notes in his piece, Hyde has not yet been much of a threat catching balls out of the backfield, and with Kyle Shanahan’s version of the West Coast offense now firmly in place, Hyde might be better suited on a more run-first team.

Edholm suggests some landing spots that could end up being better fits might be the Panthers, Giants, Buccaneers, or the Dolphins. With Cam Newton running the ball in Carolina, having El Guapo as a more traditional power-back could be just what the Panthers need to get back in the Super Bowl hunt.

On the most recent episode of the NFL Films Podcast, @EddieGeorge2727 took a moment to remember Anna Maria, the coach who shaped his post NFL career.

— NFL Films (@NFLFilms) February 21, 2018

Few players have had the career, during and post football, that former Ohio State Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George has had. In addition to his work as an analyst for FOX, George has also found a career as an actor since retiring from the NFL.

While other football players have transitioned to acting— Howie Long, Jim Brown, Bubba Smith, Alex Karras, Merlin Olsen, Terry Crews, Brian Bosworth, and Terry Bradshaw, just to name a few— George has found his new home not on screen like most of the others mentioned have, but on stages across the country.

When I spoke to George in 2016, he was coming off of his Broadway debut in the role of Billy Flynn in the musical “Chicago.” The OSU legend said then, “Every night was a Super Bowl. Every single night under the Broadway lights, on that stage in the Ambassador Theatre, an historic venue, was a Super Bowl. I mean, you are exhausted eight shows a week, but putting out that same energy and being enveloped in that is something unto itself.”

George recently returned to the role for a special run with the show’s tour at the Palace Theatre in Columbus, which earned killer reviews. However, in watching this NFL Films piece about his acting coach, it is clear that the discipline that took George to the heights of his playing career is still very much a part of who he is now that he’s transitioned away from the field.
