The Buckeyes have dropped their last three games.

The No. 18 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team dropped a close decision to No. 4 Notre Dame Sunday, falling by a score of 9-8 in Columbus, Ohio. With the loss, the No. 18 Buckeyes have lost three-straight as they move to 5-4 on the season.

Despite losing the opening faceoff, Ohio State struck first on attack, taking an early lead on a goal from freshman attackman J.T. Bugliosi, assisted by sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire. After trading possessions, Notre Dame scored the next two to take control of the game midway through the first quarter. Leclaire, however, fought back on a fast break with his 14th goal of the season to send the teams into the second tied at two-all.

The teams remained close throughout the second. Notre Dame added two quick goals in the first three minutes of the quarter, but freshman midfielder Jackson Reid connected off a pass from senior midfielder John Kelly to pull the Buckeyes within one. An unassisted goal from Leclaire once again tied things midway through the quarter. The Irish found the back of the net with 4:23 remaining in the half, but Leclaire pulled through yet again, completing a hat trick in the first half to tie things five-all at the break.

The third quarter remained a defensive struggle for both teams. Finally, after two assists in the first half, Kelly scored his first goal of the day with 2:42 remaining in the period to give the Buckeyes their first lead since the opening minutes of the game.

Things began to fall apart for Ohio State early in the fourth quarter, as Notre Dame scored the first three goals of the period while controlling possession on attack. A man-up goal from Bugliosi pulled the Buckeyes back within one, but an Irish score with 4:11 remaining in the game sealed the Notre Dame victory.

Leclaire’s three goals led all scorers, with five Buckeyes scoring in all. Shots on goal were 17-11 in favor of Ohio State. Sophomore goalie Josh Kirson, who earned his first career start against the Irish, had 13 saves on the day, while Notre Dame’s Matthew Schmidt had nine.

On the circle, the Buckeyes went just 4-of-21 on faceoffs on the day—a sad stat considering Ohio State entered the game winning 57.1 percent of faceoffs, while Notre Dame had been held under 50 percent on the season. Notre Dame also collected 31 ground balls to Ohio State’s 26.

Next up, the Buckeyes enter Big Ten play as they face Penn State in Columbus on Saturday.

The Buckeyes win their first NCAA hockey tournament game since 1998.

That went about as well as it possibly could’ve. The No. 1-seed Ohio State Buckeyes came out slowly against No. 4 Princeton, but eventually woke up and dominated a team that only received a tournament bid due to a conference tournament win. Princeton came in with the nation’s No. 1 ranked power play and No. 3 scoring offense, but could barely generate anything against the Buckeyes until the last minute of regulation. The Buckeyes ultimately took the game 4-2 after Princeton put in two in the last minute.

Freddy Gerard, Tanner Laczynski and Dakota Joshua especially took it to the Tigers, with the former two using speed to break the Princeton trap and Joshua singlehandedly destroying the nation’s top-ranked power play, which came in converting at 28.5 percent. Granted, Princeton doesn’t exactly come from Hockey East, but even against weaker competition, that’s daunting. They came in winning seven in a row to get here and 13 out of 16 and got skated off the ice by the Buckeyes.

Ohio State seemed to go out of its way to give Princeton a chance to fully weaponize its scoring offense, taking eight minor penalties. Against a good power play, that’s a bad idea. Against a team that can only beat you by outscoring you? It’s a real bad idea. But Dakota Joshua had other ideas.

Joshua was Ohio State’s best skater against Notre Dame in last weekend’s Big Ten title game, exerting himself physically and pushing around the Irish. He showed up similarly today, just putting excellent puck pressure on Princeton’s power play and forcing them to not even be able to set up until the game was out of hand.

Laczynski and Gerard capitalized the times Ohio State wasn’t on the penalty kill. Tanner had a goal and assist, while Gerard set up Laczynski’s goal and scored one of his own in the third to really put this one on ice. Mason Jobst and Kevin Miller scored the other two goals, the first two, just 20 seconds apart in the first period.

OSU came out sputtering in the first, seemingly unable to generate any offense. Princeton wasn’t doing anything of their own on the offensive end, but you don’t want to give a team that is an underdog the chance to feel like they belong on the same ice with you. The teams traded non-threatening powerplays but on Ohio State’s second chance, after Matthew Thom went off for holding at 12:52 of the first, the Buckeyes capitalized.

Ohio State was able to get the setup they wanted and, despite seeming to get too cute looking for the perfect powerplay chance, found the shot they were looking for. Tanner Laczynski found Mason Jobst near the left point. Jobst costed to the top of the circle and just rifled one past Princeton goalie Ryan Ferland.

Just twenty seconds later, back at even strength, Ohio State doubled the lead. Ronnie Hein used his speed to fly down the right wing and just threw the puck to the front of the net, where Kevin Miller got his stick on it and put it past Ferland to make it 2-0.

Ohio State gave Princeton another chance on the powerplay in the first, including a 5-on-3 chance, but Dakota Joshua probably had the best scoring chance during that period.

The second would have ample powerplay opportunity for both teams, especially Ohio State, but the game would go into the second intermission with the same score as the first: 2-0 Ohio State.

Josh Teves was sent off for Princeton for contact to the head of Joshua at just 1:37 of the first and received a game misconduct. Ohio State couldn’t capitalize on the powerplay time, however. Princeton just wouldn’t be put away. But any momentum they gained from that momentous kill failed to translate into offense as they failed in their only power play chance of the period as well.

In the third, it was more Ohio State offense before Princeton made this one look a lot closer than it was in the final couple of minutes.

OSU’s third goal looked remarkably similar to the second, as Freddy Gerard found his way to the right win and just threw the puck at the front of the net, where Laczynski found a way to get it in past Ferland. Ferland didn’t see Laczynski and looked to be sliding to the right post to guard against another shooter, but Laczynski streaked out of nowhere for the tip to the left post, and it was 3-0 OSU 3:55 into the third.

The fourth goal would be a weird one and one that would make the ending to this game a lot less nerve wracking. A shot by Luke Stork went wide and found its way all the way around to Gerard, who was staring at a wide open net. Ferland was nudged by Jobst, but it was well outside the crease and barely inhibited his movement, so it stood and OSU was up 4-0 and this one was pretty much over.

IT'S FOUR!

— NCAA Ice Hockey (@NCAAIceHockey) March 24, 2018

Princeton pulled Ferland toward the end because they still couldn’t generate any offense despite being down four goals to give their senior goalie, Ben Halford, time in the crease as his career came to an end.

And then they somehow scored two goals in the last minute, one on the power play, and made this one look a lot closer than it otherwise was. Matt Nelson scored one at 19:34 on that power play, and David Hallisey jammed home another 16 seconds later, to make it 4-2.

But Sean Romeo wouldn’t allow a third in 30 seconds, and Ohio State held on to win the game, 4-2. The Buckeyes win their first NCAA tournament game since 1998 and are now within one game of the Frozen Four. They will take on the winner of Denver/Penn State tomorrow night in Allentown, Penn.

Go Bucks.

Plus, the Buckeye fencers are vying for an NCAA Championship and more.

“Ohio State’s Jae’Sean Tate has been selected to participate in the inaugural Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes may have been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in the Round of 32, but at least one player will get another chance to suit up before calling it a college career. Senior Jae’Sean Tate will compete in this three-day event, which will pit 32 four-man teams (including players from every DI basketball conference) in a 3-on-3 tournament.

Teams will feature seniors who are out of college eligibility and will compete for a $100k prize pool, with each game adding at least a grand to the team’s purse. Tate will be one of four Big Ten players to have the opportunity to show off in front of scouts one last time, with each conference’s competitors now-playing for the same team.

“For fans, this will be an opportunity to see the nation’s top seniors compete in the rapidly growing and fast-paced nature of 3-on-3 basketball,” said Drew Russell, Intersport’s Vice President of Sports Properties. “For players, it will be one last opportunity to showcase their skills on a national stage and give them the chance to earn a significant sum of money. It will also expose them to the 3-on-3 format which may lead to new opportunities as they take the next step in their professional careers.”

The Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship will get underway next Friday, March 30 and will continue through Sunday, April 1, and can be seen on ESPN2 or streamed live on Twitter.

“The Ohio State fencing team finished the first day of the NCAA Championships in fourth place with 51 points.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

After the max number of competitors qualified to represent Ohio State, there are plenty of Buckeyes to help claim both individual and team awards at the 2018 Fencing NCAA Championships. The first day of competition featured three rounds of women’s matchups, with each Buckeye fencer facing 15 total opponents. (That sounds exhausting.)

Day 1 was led by the foil unit, which featured two first-time title competitors, Camilla Rivano and Gabriela Cecchini. The two finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively, and added 22 points to the overall team count — 11 wins each.

Additionally Emma von Dadelszen finished the first day of competition with 11 victories (good for fourth place) and Alexanne Verret claimed six victories to land in 15th place. Finally, the sabre unit added 12 points to the teal total, thanks to the 10 wins from Sarah Merza (sixth place) and Maddalena Bosetti’s two victories (landing in 23rd place).

The women’s competition will wrap up on Friday, March 23, with the men’s competition getting underway on Saturday through Sunday.

“No. 18/19 Ohio State kicks off Big Ten action this weekend with a three-game series at Indiana.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

After a solid start to the season, the Buckeyes are finally getting into Big Ten play after a couple months of road-trip tournaments. Their first competition will be on the road, in a three-game series this weekend against the Indiana Hoosiers.

Ohio State seems to hold the advantage heading into conference play, boasting a 19-4 record compared to the 7-21 record the Hoosiers started the season with. History may not be on the Buckeyes’ side, with the overall series favoring Indiana, 47-58-2. The Buckeyes did win two of three matches in 2017, winning the rubber match thanks to five home runs hits.

Home runs have sort of become second-nature to the Buckeyes, having connected on 29 homers through 23 games. Their home run stats, and others, are good enough to keep Ohio State among the top-five Big Ten schools in batting average (.265), slugging percentage (.473), doubles (40), home runs (29), earned run average (2.07) and fielding percentage (.970).

Following this weekend’s road trip, the Buckeyes will finally get back to Columbus for their home opener against Kentucky on Wednesday, March 28 at 6 p.m. ET.
