Confidential accusations have come in from former athletes in eight sports.

On April 5, The Ohio State University announced that it had hired an outside investigator to conduct an independent inquiry into accusations of sexual misconduct against a former university and athletic department doctor.

Allegations against Richard Strauss, who died in 2005, have been reported to the university ranging in time “from the mid-1970s to the 1990s” and reportedly involve athletes from the cheerleading, fencing, football, gymnastics, hockey, swimming, volleyball, and wrestling programs. In addition to treating student-athletes, Strauss also worked at the university medical center and student health center.

In a statement sent yesterday to university students and employees, OSU president Michael Drake said, “These allegations are disturbing to us all. A safe and healthy climate for students, faculty, staff and visitors is always our top priority.”

Drake also provided an update on the investigation, and encouraged anyone with information on the situation to contact the investigating law firm, Perkins Coie.

In the accompanying update, the university says that the Columbus Division of Police and the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office have been kept informed for any potential criminal investigation. Also, the Ohio Attorney General’s office has provided resources from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

According to the Associated Press, Strauss was an associate professor of medicine at Ohio State, and worked for the Olympics in 1984. He also reportedly studied injury rates of wrestlers and the effects of steroids on athletes, amongst other things.

Mid-Week game @ Ball State from Muncie, IN

i don’t even wanna get started on that one...just awful.

We went from being solidly in as an at large to being squarely on the bubble again. Just a devastating loss. Beals now 1-3 vs Ball St as our coach.

In terms of RPI, Winning a series at Illinois will essentially cancel out the Ball St goat rodeo, but my confidence is pretty low at the moment. Based on our history of failures down the stretch under Beals and the way the bats have cooled, I’m just not feeling it. Sorry but it’s hard to be an optimistic Ohio St baseball fan nowadays.

Are the Buckeyes hoping to flip an already committed QB in 2019?

Ohio State players are either finishing up their classes or are already at home for a much deserved break. While being a part of the Ohio State football program rarely offers a break to players, that rare break from the grind hasn’t been given to the coaching staff. This gang of relentless recruiters is still on the trail at top speed looking all over the country to bring in the next Buckeye great. While the 2019 class is certainly coming together as of late, Meyer and his staff of coaches know that the only momentum they have comes when they continue this pursuit. Until fall camp hits, you can guarantee the Buckeye recruiting efforts will be atop of the priorities list and more “Booms” will soon follow.

Change in plans?

Ohio State hosted Texas native quarterback Grant Gunnell last weekend for his official visit to see what the Buckeyes had to offer. While a commitment pledge could have come from the visit, no official word was given after the visit as Gunnell is still on the market. While Ohio State certainly looks to have the upper hand in the Gunnell sweepstakes, there’s still other threats out there against the Buckeyes that have to be respected. It is true and maybe telling as to why Ohio State leads in even the 247sports crystal ball predictions, but again, until a final decision has been made, the staff has to do what they have to do in order to find a signal caller and leader of their 2019 class.

Enter Dwan Mathis, a 2019 QB prospect of Oak Park, Michigan, and you have the latest quarterback in the 2019 class to hear from the Buckeyes. Yesterday, via Dwan’s Twitter account, he made it public that Ohio State had extended a scholarship offer in his favor. More in depth, news came to the surface that QB coach Ryan Day was even at Oak Park High School yesterday outside of Detroit to check in on Dwan. The kicker: Mathis is currently committed to the hometown Michigan State Spartans. Obviously no love lost between the Buckeyes and Sparty, the Buckeye offer to Mathis will certainly prove its weight in the near future.

Blessed to receive an offer from The Ohio State University ⭕pic.twitter.com/ynnlEvslsy

— WANNYLIVE5 (@DwanMathis) May 3, 2018

Graded out as the eleventh best pro-style quarterback in the class, Mathis is truly a prospect to watch. A lengthy signal caller to say the least, Mathis measures in at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds and can run a bit here and there when he’s not slinging the rock all over the field.

As mentioned earlier, Gunnell has been thought to be the QB of Ohio State’s class, but this offer to an already committed prospect certainly has the minds stirring. It could mean a number of things including the fact that the Buckeyes know Mathis is a very good football player and want to be considered before pen hits paper. On the other hand, this could be looked at as a potential backup plan if Ohio State doesn’t in fact end up with Grant Gunnell. It could even be a ploy to try and put the pressure on Gunnell to commit to Ohio State sooner than later, but if one thing is for sure, trusting the coaching staff is what’s needed here. They know what they’re doing and this 2019 QB recruitment will eventually settle itself.

Nothing wrong with getting a head start

Ohio State’s first priority in the recruiting world right now is locking down their 2019 class. As they continue to evaluate and receive verbal pledges from their top targets, the staff has to be pleased about where the current class is headed in terms of quality and quantity. However, time and time again, looking a little bit ahead to the classes beyond the immediate cycle certainly doesn’t hurt your efforts when that next class is up and ready to be top priority. As the staff is on the road in various parts of the country, it’s expected that new offers are going to go out fairly often. Yesterday, was no different as multiple were sent out.

In addition to the aforementioned Dwan Mathis, another prospect was fortunate enough to receive the highly coveted Buckeye offer. 2020 defensive-end Tyler Baron, a Tennessee native, also announced via Twitter that Ohio State was the latest to throw their hat into the offer ring.

EXTREMELY Blessed and honored to have received an offer from THE Ohio State University #gobucks ❌ ‼️ pic.twitter.com/Cqs0Us8Jpo

— Tyler Baron (@Tylerbaron23) May 3, 2018

At 6-foot-4, 245 pounds, Baron already has impressive size. Being that he still has two full seasons of prep football to be played however and his frame, there’s a solid chance that Tyler will continue to put on weight and gain strength before he plays on Saturday’s at the next level. An impressive youngster, Baron is currently ranked as a four-star by 247sports and listed specifically as the 10th best player in Tennessee as well as the 13th best weak-side defensive end in the 2020 class. To add to his accolades, Baron also holds double digit offers with schools such as Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, and more already in the fold.

With his current class status, Baron has not yet been to Columbus before, but now with an offer in hands, a trip to Ohio State is certainly a visit that could see planning in the near future. The Buckeyes will know how serious of a contender they are if they can get Tyler in campus and if so, they’ve been able to go into Tennessee more than once and poach a top prospect. Could Baron be the next? Time will tell.

Quick Hits:

  • In-state prospect and Ohio State priority target Zeke Correll (Anderson/Cincinnati, OH) released his top four schools yesterday. The Buckeyes feel good about where they currently sit with Ohio’s fifth best prospect, but they’ll have to fend off Clemson, Stanford, and Notre Dame in order to bring this star north up the highway to Columbus.

I am BEYOND GRATEFUL for all of the opportunities that I have been given. I would like to thank every coach that has reached out to me and recruited me. But above all, I would like to honor God for getting me here. ‼️TOP 4‼️Also thanks to @Recruit_Edits for this dope edit!! pic.twitter.com/kJkFMec07p

— Zeke Correll (@zekecorrell) May 3, 2018
  • Four-star linebacker and Florida native Rian Davis announced a top-12 list yesterday via his Twitter. In addition to Ohio State making the cut, Georgia, Houston, Louisville, Oregon, Texas, Clemson, Arizona State, Alabama, Miami, Indiana, and NC State also made the list.

With the loss, the season is more than likely over for the Buckeyes.

The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team lost what is likely its final game of the season Thursday, falling to Johns Hopkins, 6-5, in Ann Arbor in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 8-7 on the season, including 3-3 in conference play, and have all but been eliminated from contention for a spot in the NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse tournament.

In a closely contested struggle, neither team was able to find a rhythm on attack as both defenses played lights out for four quarters. The game was also a highly chippy one, which culminated in a massive brawl midway through the fourth quarter and resulted in two players being ejected.

Both teams were held scoreless for most of the first quarter as the defenses came out strong from the start with each forcing turnovers on the attack. Finally, with four minutes remaining in the opening period, sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire shot an absolute rocket from behind the arc, connecting for the first score of the game and giving the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Ohio State capitalized on its lead early in on in the second as junior attackman Jack Jasinski scored his 17th goal of the season to put the Buckeyes up two. That’s when the extracurriculars started, with players from each side receiving unsportsmanlike penalties in what would become a very chippy game. Hopkins emerged from the scuffle, profiting off an Ohio State turnover as Kyle Marr put the Blue Jays on the board to narrow the Buckeyes’ lead to one.

Freshman midfielder Jackson Reid, who bore the brunt of Ohio State’s unsportsmanlike penalty, made up for his mistake as he tipped in a goal off a feed from Leclaire. Johns Hopkins answered with 6:15 left in the half on a shot from Joel Tinney, but the Buckeyes bounced back as sophomore defenseman Jeff Henrick scored his first goal of the season, assisted by senior defenseman Erik Evans. As the quarter closed, however, two Ohio State defenders earned penalties, giving the Blue Jays a two-man-up opportunity which they leveraged to close the Buckeyes lead to one heading into the break.

The defenses emerged strong once again in the third, as neither team scored until the 3:14 mark, when Hopkins tied things up at four-all heading into the final 15 minutes.

Ohio State’s attack controlled possession early in the fourth. After a pair of missed shots, the Buckeyes finally found the back of the net on another score from Reid--his 23rd of the season. Ohio State controlled the ball for another possession, but came up empty. During the transition, senior attackman Colin Chell was called for pushing, which somehow turned into an all-out bench-clearing brawl that led to a player on each side getting ejected.

Less than two minutes later, Hopkins scored to tie things up at five-all. Ohio State controlled the next possession, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Blue Jays were content to hang onto the ball, even earning a shot clock violation with 32 seconds left to give the Buckeyes a shot at the win. Unfortunately, a bad pass gave the ball right back to the Blue Jays and, 13 seconds later, the goal that proved to be the nail in the coffin of Ohio State’s Big Ten Tournament.

Reid’s two goals led the team, with the Buckeyes taking 37 shots to Hopkins’ 17. Freshman specialist Justin Inacio won 11-of-14 faceoffs on the day for Ohio State, and sophomore goalie Josh Kirson had four saves on the day. Ohio State proved dominant on defensive categories, forcing eight turnovers and collecting 28 ground balls to the Blue Jays’ 15.

Johns Hopkins will go on to play Maryland, the top seed in the conference tournament, Saturday in Ann Arbor.

With a crowded backfield, the freshman will first need to earn the trust of his coaches on the special teams unit.

“But the biggest reason Teague might end up with a chance to show what can do in the backfield stems from the program’s love of special teams.”

Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

While it is highly unlikely that running back Master Teague is going to wrestle many carries away from J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber this year, the freshman could lay the groundwork for a bigger role in Columbus in the coming years with a strong performance on the special teams unit. Head coach Urban Meyer likes to use the special teams unit as a proving ground for young players, and if they excel on the unit, those young players often find themselves with a higher level of trust among the coaching staff.

In just a short time in Columbus, Teague has already made some noise. Not only did Teague rush for 77 yards on 15 carries in the spring game, but he moved up the depth chart at running back a few weeks ago when it was announced that third-string running back Antonio Williams was transferring to North Carolina.

Let’s not forget, just a few years ago a highly-touted freshman running back was making plays on special teams for Ohio State while there was a bit of a logjam at running back. Ezekiel Elliott was a part of the special teams unit and laying big hits on opponents before starting at running back for the Buckeyes. Even though it might be unrealistic to expect Teague to match Elliott, the young running back is certainly on the right path.

The Steelers have converted $8.26M of LB Ryan Shazier’s 2018 base salary into a signing bonus, per source. Shazier, placed on PUP Wednesday, earns that money now. While there are no cap implications, it’s a great gesture by a first rate organization.

— Field Yates (@FieldYates) May 3, 2018

Last Thursday, former Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier provided one of the most memorable moments of the 2018 NFL Draft, when he was able to walk to the podium and announce the first round pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now the Steelers have announced they are converting Shazier’s 2018 salary into a signing bonus, meaning that instead of having to wait until the end of the 2018 season to receive his whole salary, his salary is available to him immediately.

The Steelers already announced at the NFL Draft Combine in February that Shazier wouldn’t play in 2018, and on Wednesday the Steelers placed Shazier on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. It’s hard to imagine Shazier ever taking the field again in the NFL, after the traumatic neck injury he suffered against Cincinnati in early December, but the linebacker maintains that he still wants to play football. While there may be plenty of doubters out there on whether Shazier will ever play football again, if there is anyone who can overcome those odds, it’s the former Ohio State linebacker.

“We’re not going to be shy about saying who should be taking the biggest swings in the biggest moments. It should be Nic Szerszen. If they want to put three, four, or five guys in front of Szerszen, we’re still going to take those odds.”

Ohio State men’s volleyball coach Pete Hanson via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

Tonight Ohio State’s men’s volleyball team will play top-seeded Long Beach State with a trip to the national title game on the line. If Ohio State wants to pull the upset, and keep their dream alive for a third straight national championship, the Buckeyes are going to need another big effort out of Nicolas Szerszen.

Not only was the senior from France named 2016 national player of the year, but Szerszen is Ohio State’s all-time leader in kills, points, service aces, and aces per set. Szerszen always seems to play his best volleyball when Ohio State needs him the most. The Buckeyes have especially needed Szerszen’s talents this year, after Ohio State lost a big portion of their core from their last two national championship teams.

Even if Ohio State isn’t able to bring home a third straight national title, Szerszen’s legacy has already been cemented as one of the best volleyball players in school history. If Szerszen and the Buckeyes are able to get by Long Beach State in tonight’s first national semifinal in Los Angeles, they’ll move on to face the winner of the night’s second semifinal between UCLA and BYU on Saturday night.

— Ohio State W Tennis (@OhioState_WTEN) May 3, 2018

After posting a 23-10 record this year, Shiori Fukuda was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, becoming the sixth Ohio State women’s tennis player to earn the honor. Fukuda joins 2014 winner Gabriella De Santis and 2016 winner Francesca Di Lorenzo as recent Buckeyes to win the award.

Along with her Freshman of the Year honor, Fukada was also a unanimous All-Big Ten selection, an honor that was also earned by Anna Sanford. This marked the fourth straight year in which Sanford earned All-Big Ten honors, becoming just the third Buckeye to be named All-Big Ten in each of her four years with the school.

The third Buckeye to be honored by the Big Ten was Olivia Sneed, who was the recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for Ohio State. The senior posted a 23-11 record this year, and was 8-3 in Big Ten play.

Ohio State’s women’s tennis team finished the season ranked No. 28, and earned a bid to the NCAA team championship for the fifth consecutive year. The Buckeyes will take on Clemson in Nashville on May 11, with the winner moving on to take on the winner of the matchup between top-seeded Vanderbilt and Alabama State.

Bryce Young may be one of the best in country.

The Ohio State Buckeyes already had a great weekend on the recruiting trail for their 2019 class. Now they’re looking to lay the foundation for a stellar 2020 class. While they’ve already made offers to some of the talented members of the ‘20 recruiting cycle, the Bucks made another splash when they offered a top-rated dual-threat quarterback on Wednesday.

Happy Birthday Dad! Blessed to have received an offer from THE Ohio State University #GoBucks #Zone6 ⭕pic.twitter.com/7ubTzKarGi

— Bryce Young (@_bryce_young) May 2, 2018

Bryce Young (Santa Ana, CA / Mater Dei) was the latest offer made by the powerhouse football school in Columbus. But, the Buckeyes weren’t the first school to roll up into the recruiting game for Young. Already, over 20 offers have found their way to the QB—with notable programs such as Alabama and Oklahoma in the mix.

If OSU really wants to be in the running for the Californian, then they have to get him on campus. A couple weeks ago, Young made an unofficial visit to Washington; prior to that he made unofficial trips to Oklahoma and Alabama last fall.

Young stands at 6-feet tall, and weighs just a hair north of 175 pounds. Since he is a 2020 prospect, the recruiting grades haven’t been filed by all of the sites, however, 247sports has graded him—and it’s a good one. According to 247sports, the Mater Dei star is considered a four-star recruit, and is the best dual-threat QB in his class. Additionally, the recruiting site has him as the 38th best overall prospect and seventh best product from California in that cycle.

While we can’t be sure of who will/won’t be in the QB room at OSU by the time the 2021 season starts, we do know that there will be talent. If there aren’t any shakeups, then Tate Martell and Matthew Baldwin will be upperclassmen for the Buckeyes at that time. And then you’ll have to assume that another QB will be part of the 2019 class; right now, that appears to be Grant Gunnell—but things can change instantly on the recruiting trail.

If you’re interested in what Young has done so far, here are some of his sophomore year highlights.

Wait, there’s another 2020 offer!

Young wasn’t the only recruit to secure an offer from Ohio State on Wednesday. Offensive tackle Paul Tchio (Alpharetta, GA / Milton) also picked up the coveted offer from the Scarlet and Gray.

BLESSED TO HAVE JUST RECEIEVED AN OFFER FROM THE ⭕️HIO STATE UNIVERSITY!! #gobuckeyes pic.twitter.com/WcmBA3JEq1

— Paul Tchio (@paul__taco) May 2, 2018

Since he’s a 2020 prospect, the complete recruiting grades aren’t in for him. But, like Young, 247sports has evaluated him. Right now, Tchio is considered a four-star, and is the 19th best OT in his class. For the state of Georgia, he comes in as the 19th best player.

A handful of top-flight schools have already made their interest known to the Alpharetta standout, and it seems that the SEC schools, as well as some of the southern contingent of the ACC, have the early advantage in the recruiting battle. According to 247sports, Alabama is the early favorite, with defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi leading the way in the Crimson Tide’s recruiting efforts.

Ohio State entering the mix can shake things up. But they’ll need to get him to visit campus (and the program) to further their chances at pulling Alabama off the top spot for this recruit.

Full Circle

The moment was seared into Buckeye Nation’s collective memory last September: After Baker Mayfield carved the Buckeye defense en route to a Sooners win in Columbus, he attempted to jam an ‘OU’ flag at the 50-yard line inside The Horseshoe after the game.

Fast forward to May, and the reining Heisman Trophy winner is now a member of the Cleveland Browns, courtesy of being selected No. 1 overall at the NFL Draft.

Mayfield is a product of Lake Travis, a high school football powerhouse in Texas. Another product of that same school: recent OSU commit Garrett Wilson. In the tweet below by Ben Axelrod, Mayfield went and saw Wilson shine in practice—and had some encouraging words.
