Aaron Craft, William Buford, Jon Diebler, and more are looking to avenge their double OT Final Four loss from 2017.

With yesterday’s announcement that three former Buckeye basketball stars would be a part of Big X in this year’s The Basketball Tournament, many fans disappointingly assumed that that meant that there wouldn’t be a return of Team Scarlet and Gray, which lost in double overtime of last year’s semifinals.

However, today the Columbus Sports commission confirmed that the Buckeye team will be back this season, again coached by Scoonie Penn and Evan Turner. On the roster, as of now, are returning players William Buford, Aaron Craft, Jon Diebler, Dallas Lauderdale, David Lighty and Evan Ravenel. Joining them this summer will be former Buckeye B.J. (don’t call me Byron) Mullens. Additions to the roster will be announced later. Jared Sullinger was instrumental in last year’s TBT run. No word yet on if he will return.

Team Scarlet and Gray very well could face off with Big X, featuring former OSU stars Andrew Dakich, Jae’Sean Tate, and Kam Williams, along with players from Michigan and Illinois.

This year, Columbus’ Capital University will host an opening round regional from July 20 through 22nd. Team Scarlet and Gray will likely open there, as they are automatically entered into the field of 72, based off of last year’s success and popularity.

The gambling law change is yet another way for everyone but players to profit on college athletics

Every Saturday, from August 25th, to December 29th in 2018, there will be college football available for fans all over the country to watch. From Hawaii @ Colorado State in Week 1, to the College Football Playoff National Championship game on January 7th, there will be thousands of games being played by thousands of 18-22ish year old athletes.

In that four-and-a-half month period, there’s plenty of money to be made. Every televised game generates advertisement revenue for the NCAA, TV networks, advertisers, and individual conferences and teams. Every game will generate revenue from ticket sales and concessions. That money, once again, will go to schools, which will then likely go to coaches, administrators, facilities, and any other whims of the school.

During the season, various TV networks will advertise upcoming games using highlights from past games, from the nation’s most exciting players, athletes like Ohio State’s JT Barrett, Tyquan Lewis, Jayln Holmes and Mike Weber, or USC’s Sam Darnold and Notre Dame’s Brandon Wimbush, among many others every week, every year.

The promotions benefit the TV networks, the NCAA, and the teams participating, because they’ll drive eyes to the game, and increase revenue for all parties. None of this basic college sports economics is new to the system. Ever since NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma in 1984, TV networks have been able to sell college football with ease.

A new beneficiary was introduced to college sports yesterday. The Supreme Court, unsurprisingly so, ruled that sports betting being illegal is unconstitutional. So what does this mean? Well, it means that many states are likely to legalize sports gambling, and they’ll almost certainly do so before the college football season. This also means that the newest group legally allowed to profit off of college sports are the fans and followers of the sport.

They join a group that includes TV networks, the NCAA, universities, unaffiliated clothing and merchandise shops, and pretty much everyone else in America. You know who that group doesn’t include? The only group of people in the country now that can’t profit off the work of college athletes? The absolutely endless, grueling, physically devastating work of college athletes? The only group in America left that can’t profit off of college athletes is college athletes.

This whole system of various groups profiting off of college sports depends entirely on the athletes that play the games. It’s a multi-billion dollar industry, built on “student-athletes,” and fully predicated on absolutely never paying the players that do the work to make the game happen.

That phrase, “student-athlete” is a common answer to why young men doing an increasingly brutal and violent job aren’t allowed to legally receive pay for their work. The fact that players at D1 schools are given scholarships to the schools of their choice is talked about as sufficient remuneration for anywhere from three to five years of hours in the weight room, on the track, on the practice field, and ultimately, in the games.

The general evaluation the “free” education athletes are receiving is also, almost always, extremely overblown. Cases like the tutor scandal at North Carolina are not in any way rare in college sports, and more likely than not, if a team wants to compete, their players are working their full-time job as football players and not actually benefiting from the full scholarship they’re given.

No matter what the NCAA wants to think, or what fans want to think, college football is about football, and about making money off of it. Not about seeking a higher education, or being a balanced student and athlete. That takes us back to the original point of the matter, how, in the grand scheme of things, what players receive for their work absolutely pales in comparison to what everyone else in America can now make off that work.

None of this is to say that there’s anything inherently wrong with betting on sports, pro or college. If that’s how someone wants to spend their money, I have absolutely no issue with that, and feel that they’re free to do as they wish.

Gambling, much like TV networks, unaffiliated stores, universities, coaches, and everyone else that profits from the sport, are just taking advantage of a completely broken system, and can’t really be faulted for taking what’s given to them. The broken system, of course, is the NCAA, and their model of amateurism. It’s an exploitative and grotesque model, and the sooner it dies the better.

In 2018, Division 1 college football coaches will makes roughly $300 million in total, or around $2.5 million per coach. Athletic directors will make roughly $600,000. TV networks will make millions, if not billions on games and advertisements. Gambling will generate more money than ever with its legalization. And through all of this, the players won’t legally make a dime. Just pay the damn players already.

Last year’s edition of ‘The Game’ was Fox’s highest-rated regular season CFB game ever.

Leading into the 2018-19 season, we know what the schedule is for the Ohio State Buckeyes. But, we don’t know all the times and TV stations that will carry the games...yet.

Part of the channel mystery was solved on Monday night, as FOX was announced to have picked up ‘The Game’ for the 2018 season.

according to today's FOX Upfront, Michigan-Ohio State, Texas-Oklahoma, and Michigan-Michigan St. are all on FOX this fall. #collegefootball @mattsarz

— Chris Lezotte (@ChrisLezotte) May 14, 2018

It will be the second year in a row that Ohio State-Michigan heads to FOX—which means there’s a good chance that Gus Johnson will be on the call again.

In their run to a Cotton Bowl victory last season, the Buckeyes appeared on FOX/FS1 seven times, playing against notable teams such as Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin (in the Big Ten Championship).

For FOX, they are entering Year 3 of a six-year agreement to Big Ten football/basketball rights. According to cleveland.com, FOX is forking over roughly $240 million per year for access to 25 college football games and 50 college basketball games.

As the football broadcasting schedule gets ironed out, expect another advertisement campaign to come around, too. Last season, Wieden + Kennedy led the charge for FOX with a 16-ad campaign featuring the tagline “Every Game Is Everything”. Of those 16, 14 were team specific (one for each Big Ten program) while two were game focused (Texas-USC and Ohio State-Michigan). Michael Kelly, who plays the character Doug Stamper on Netflix’s House of Cards, did the narration for the last season’s ad campaign for Wieden + Kennedy.

The Buckeyes shift their focus to the 2020 recruiting class, sending out multiple offers to some of the country’s top prospects.

Urban Meyer has become one of the country’s top college football recruiters in the country during his tenure at Ohio State. One of the ways he has been able to achieve this elite status is his innate knack for identifying talent early in the recruitment cycle.

Ohio State’s 2019 recruiting class is beginning to shape up nicely being ranked No. 9 in the country and No. 2 in the Big Ten, according to 247Sports.

Because of this head start, the Ohio State coaching staff is finding time to focus in on next year’s recruiting class and multiple talented recruits are catching their eyes and are earning scholarship offers to play college football in Columbus.

Below are some of the recruits Ohio State offered scholarship offers to Monday.

Ohio State offers 2019 TE

While the Ohio State coaching staff has certainly found time to look at the 2020 recruiting class, don’t think for a second that they have forgotten about this year’s crop.

Late Monday afternoon, four-star tight end Ethan Rae (Orange, CA / Orange Lutharan) took to Twitter to show off the coveted Ohio State offer.

I am speechless to have received an offer from THE Ohio State University!! #GoBucks ⭕pic.twitter.com/DlhQv2jHrP

— Ethan Rae (@Rae__Ethan) May 14, 2018

The California native receiving his scholarship, now joins teammates four-star QB Ryan Hilinski and four-star WR Kyle Ford. Of the group, Rae seems to be most likely to commit to Ohio State as Hilinski has already committed to South Carolina and Ford is trending towards USC.

Rae is one of the better TEs in this years class. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 7 TE to go along with the No. 254 best overall prospect in the country.

Ohio State joins the likes of Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Notre Dame, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, USC, Oregon, Cal and UCLA competing for Rae’s commitment.

Purdue Series from Nick Swisher Field @ Bill Davis Stadium Columbus, OH

These guys ain’t no joke on sundays! Hard to believe they managed to go 7-5 over these 12 league games. This has been the best in league season of the Beals years. We usually make our hay vs the weaker teams in the league but not this year.

Purdue might have the best bullpen in the b10 and we chewed it up Sunday. That’s only the second time all year a Purdue starter left the game with the lead and Purdue didn’t win.. Hopefully the offense can continue the momentum built late in Sunday’s game because Cincinnati will be the best midweek opponent we’ve faced. Their RPI doesn’t reflect how good they’ve been.

The Cincinnati game will be streamed live by them for free at 11am. Hopefully Vance can give us a few good innings...been a struggle for him his last 3 appearances.

The Bucks are in great shape for an at large at the moment, but they aren’t a lock yet. Gotta finish

Greg McDermott, who nearly took the Buckeyes head coach last summer, will get a showdown with Chris Holtmann in the Gavitt Games

Last month, the Ohio State Buckeyes added Bucknell to a non-conference slate that consisted of UCLA, Cincinnati and Youngstown State.

Make room for another non-conference matchup in the fall of 2018, as the Creighton Blue Jays will tip-off against the Buckeyes in the Gavitt Tipoff Games, per this tweet from Jon Rothstein.

Creighton will host Ohio State in the 2018 Gavitt Games, per a source.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) May 15, 2018

The Gavitt Tipoff Games is an annual, eight-game showdown between Big Ten and Big East squads. It’s one of the more recent conference clashes, starting back in 2015. Interestingly enough, all three years of the Games’ existence have ended ties between the two conferences.

Greg McDermott, the current Creighton coach, nearly took the OSU job last summer. Eventually, Chris Holtmann signed on the dotted line—and the rest is history. Holtmann led the Bucks to a 25-9 overall record, which included a second place finish in the Big Ten and a trip to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.

This isn’t the first time that OSU has taken part in this Big Ten/Big East challenge. In 2016, the Buckeyes defeated Providence, 72-67, at Value City Arena.

Last season, Minnesota, Purdue, Maryland, Indiana, Northwestern, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Illinois took part in the Gavitt Games; Minnesota, Maryland, Purdue and Illinois won their respective contests.

The sports information department, women’s rowing and men’s track and field all had big days.

“There are so many strong sports information departments around the nation. We are grateful for all of them. But this award is meant to honor the best of the best. It’s for those SIDs who provide strong media services and go the extra mile to help above and beyond the call of duty.”

-Tim Griffin, FWAA chairman of the Super 11 committee

Ohio State athletics took home yet another honor Monday as the sports information department was recognized as a “Super 11” Award honoree for 2017 by the Football Writers of America Association, represented by sports information director Jerry Emig. This year is the first that Ohio State has been received this honor. The award, in its ninth season, recognizes the top-11 sports information programs in the Football Bowl Subdivision for the previous season. The other 10 programs--USC, Georgia, Clemson, Colorado, Houston, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Miami of Ohio, Rice and South Alabama--have all won the award previously, with USC having taken it home a record eight times.

“We believe we have a great mix of schools here,” said FWWA executive director Steve Richardson. “Some schools which have been consistently good over the years, others who have had some history of being at the top and one new school. And there are several others who are on the cusp and could be in the Super 11 in future years.”

Selection criteria for the award include exhibiting excellent media relations practices, such as making players, coaches and assistant coaches available to the media for interviews at various points throughout the week and following games, and instituting press box protocols such as “no cheering” policies and rules relating to the presence of boosters in certain areas. Departments are judged on the “quality and timeliness” of the information they provide to the media and responsiveness to media inquiries. The committee also evaluated official websites, including the information included and the frequency with which the sites are updated.

While the award is specific to sports information related to the football program, sports information is a part of many different programs at Ohio State which work to communicate with the public and the media on behalf of the department of athletics.

And it'll be 6⃣Big Ten championships in a row for the Buckeyes!#GoBucks pic.twitter.com/yBcWHNPRg7

— OSU Women's Rowing (@OhioState_WROW) May 13, 2018

The Ohio State Buckeyes women’s rowing team has become one of the most consistently outstanding programs in college sports in recent memory. Last year was the team’s “poorest” performance in five seasons as the Buckeyes ended 2017 with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. In 2016, Ohio State earned a runner-up finish at the championships. Previously, from 2013-15, the Buckeyes swept their competition, earning three-straight national titles.

This year’s squad looks to continue that legacy. At the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis Sunday, Ohio State took home its sixth-straight conference title. The championship is also the ninth overall in program history. Even more impressive, the crew did it while winning every single one of the seven races held during the championships, ending with the first varsity eight cruising to a win over Michigan in the last race of the day. It is the first time since 2013, when a new scoring format was introduced, that one team has won all events. The 192 points Ohio State earned is a perfect score, and gave the Buckeyes a healthy margin over second-place Michigan, who finished with 163 points. Wisconsin (118), Iowa (111) and Indiana (95) rounded out the top-five, with eight Big Ten programs participating overall.

In addition, three Buckeye rowers--Ida Kruse, Rachel Engel and Cassandra Johnson--earned first-team All-Big Ten honors following the championships. Two more--Alex Riley and Lexie Nothdurft--earned second-team honors.

With the win, Ohio State earned yet another automatic berth to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 25-27 in Sarasota, Florida. The Buckeyes have been strong throughout the relatively short rowing season (made shorter with the cancellation of a dual meet in April), and are ranked fourth nationally behind Washington, Cal and Texas. Three of the seven crews are undefeated on the season, including the first varsity four, second varsity four and first novice eight. The team as a whole has lost just four races this year.

“It was our time and this group of men was the one to make it happen. We had some outstanding performances with championships and personal bests.”

-Karen Dennis, Ohio State director of track and field and cross country, via The Ohio State University

Ohio State track and field also had a big weekend in Indiana as the men’s team took home its fifth conference title in program history and its first since 1993. The team totaled 109 points in their events over the course of the weekend, including first-place finishes in three events. The team earned an overall first-place finish by 21 points. Indiana came in second with 88 points, with Nebraska, Michigan and Penn State finishing behind. The win comes on the tails of Ohio State’s indoor championship in February. That title was also the program’s first since 1993.

Senior Zack Bazile brought home the first title of the weekend as he gave the Buckeyes a first-place finish in the long jump Saturday, finishing at 8.03 meters. Freshman Eric Harrison, meanwhile, took home the gold in the 200-meter with a time of 20.39 seconds, with teammate Nick Gray right behind him in second place. Perhaps the strongest performance of the day came from the 4x100 team of Bazile, Harrison, Duan Asemota and Drelan Bramwell. Clocking in at 38.93 seconds, the time broke the previous Big Ten Outdoor Championship event record set by Ohio State in 1993. Ohio State also took home second-place finishes in the triple jump, the 100-meter dash, pole vault and shot put.

Both Bazile and Harrison earned first team All-Big Ten honors, as did teammates Asemota and Bramwell, both of whom are seniors. Four more athletes on the men’s squad garnered second team All-Big Ten honors.

The women’s squad earned a fifth-place finish in the championships, headlined by second-place finishes in the 4x400, 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Six members of the women’s squad also earned second team All-Big Ten honors for the season.

The NCAA Division ! outdoor championships are scheduled for June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon.
