Prior to the commitment from the 3-star RB/LB, the Buckeyes were No. 18.

It’s been an eventful week for the Ohio State Buckeyes. On Monday, defensive end Noah Potter committed to the program. Then, late Wednesday, three-star running back/linebacker Steele Chambers (Roswell, GA / Blessed Trinity Catholic) committed to the program—adding another layer to the amount of talent in the Buckeyes’ 2019 recruiting class.

The addition of Chambers signifies a couple things. First, he’s the sixth member to the ‘19 class for OSU. Second, he helps the Buckeyes in their quest to climb up the recruiting rankings. While 247sports grades Chambers as a .8950, OSU’s average recruit grade is 92.63—which is good enough to lead the Big Ten. Overall, the Buckeyes move up in the team rankings from No. 18 to No. 14.

OSU has 129.36 points, and to move up to No. 13, they’ll have to overtake South Carolina, a program that holds 139.33 points off of six three-star commitments, and three four-star commitments. Right now, the Bucks have five (!) recruits that hold four-star status. Urban Meyer and company may be out of the top-10 in the 247sports rankings, but that can change in a hurry.

For those curious: Oklahoma (202.19) leads the 247sports recruiting rankings for 2019, and is followed by Florida State (193.41) and Ole Miss (189.22).

It would be wise to keep him local

In the 2019 class, Zach Harrison is one of the best. He’s the No. 1 recruit in Ohio, the No. 2 weak-side defensive end and the No. 3 overall prospect. Over 15 schools have sent the five-star an offer, and expect that number to keep on climbing.

On Wednesday, Harrison showed off just how athletic he was in a dual track meet.

Zach Harrison of Olentangy Orange ran 10.82 for 100 meters and 21.55 for 200 in a dual track meet against Olentangy Liberty tonight in the rain. Those are ridiculous times for a guy about 6-5, 230. That's why he's the top rated junior football prospect in the country.

— Steve Blackledge (@BlackiePreps) April 19, 2018

As Steve Blackledge reported, those times are pretty good. Like, really really good. Fortunately for the Buckeyes, Harrison is just up the road from campus—Lewis Center, Ohio, is about 20 minutes north of the OSU campus. In a way, this was a PSA of not just how good he is on the gridiron, but in athletics in general.

We’ll keep you posted on the Harrison-to-OSU watch, as all 12 of the predictions in his 247sports crystal ball profile point to the Buckeyes being the team he’ll commit to.

An instant impact?

On Wednesday, offensive lineman Matthew Burrell declared his intent to transfer. The redshirt sophomore was thought to be in contention for one of the offensive line roles this season.

There are a handful of options the Buckeyes could go to on the O-Line. However, we may have gotten a glimpse of what is to come from Meyer. After the spring game, the head coach gave his thoughts on the offensive line shuffling between Thayer Munford and Isaiah Prince. Meyer mentioned a rotation of players on the line—and one of those potential members hasn’t arrived on campus yet.

Five-star member of the 2018 class Nicolas Petit-Frere was mentioned by Meyer in his post-game presser after the spring game. With one of the more experienced members of the offensive line leaving in Burrell, if there was a need to fill the void as fast as possible, then Petit-Frere fits the bill.

“A guy that’s been here, watching,” Meyer said of Petit-Frere after the spring game. “A very talented young man.”

Talent is something that’s been a constant around the Ohio State football program, but the Tampa native will be arriving in Columbus as the No. 1 offensive tackle in the ‘18 class. There aren’t too many people at 6-foot-6 walking around with the athletic ability of NPF. Meyer realized that Petit-Frere was taking in what he was seeing at the visits—and was paying attention. That could go a long way when he arrives on campus, as he may be seeing playing time right off the bat.

The Buckeyes pick up a late-night BOOOOM!

On Wednesday night, the Ohio State Buckeyes football team picked up a big commitment from three-star running back and linebacker Steele Chambers. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder hails from Roswell, Ga. and is the 33rd-ranked player in that football-rich state, and is currently rated as the 35th best athlete, according to 247Sports.

While only rated as a three-star prospect, he held offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Penn State and many more. He is an extremely athletic player, and while the specific position that he will play when he comes to Columbus is still up in the air, Urban Meyer and company will have options to best utilize Chambers.

He was recruited by running back coach Tony Alford, so that could provide an insight into what the Buckeye coaching staff has planned for the Peach State native.

Chambers was the Georgia Region 7AAAA Player of the Year, as he led the Blessed Trinity Titans to a AAAA State Championship. He was also named the Atlanta Journal Constitution and Georgia Athletic Coaches Association All-State Teams.

If Chambers does end up competing for time in the backfield, he could be part of the best “name battle” in Ohio State history; Steele Chambers vs. Master Teague.

With two big games in September, the Buckeyes should be able to climb back into playoff contention even if they lose one.

“No matter who is named the starting quarterback, Meyer has a talented roster that should once again be in the discussion for winning the Big Ten, as well as be a leading contender for a spot in the College Football Playoff.”

-Chip Minnich, Athlon Sports

Spring football is behind us, and it’s time to take a look at the schedule ahead for the gridiron Buckeyes; and honestly, it’s about as good as the program could possibly hope for as it looks to book a return trip to the College Football Playoff. In its totality, the schedule doesn’t have nearly as many potential pitfalls as previous years, but when considering that the Buckeyes will be breaking in a new starting quarterback this fall, the September section of the slate does pose some problems.

While three of OSU’s games in the opening month are against teams (Oregon State, Rutgers, Tulane) with a combined 10-26 record in 2017, the Buckeyes will head deep into the heart of Texas to face TCU at Jerry’s World in Arlington on Sept. 15, and then two weeks later, will travel to Happy Valley for an already-announced White Out on Sept. 29.

Those are two games with massive implications nationally in the first five weeks of the season. The Horned Frogs were 11-3 last year in the Big XII, and Buckeye fans need no reminder of OSU’s remarkable comeback against the Nittany Lions in 2017.

Should Ohio State get through the early portion of their schedule unscathed, it will give them a serious advantage in the Big Ten East race, as well as in the hunt for a berth in the CFP.

However, what’s nice about having the Penn State game fall in September— as opposed to late October or November, as it has for more than a decade— is that should OSU fall to TCU or PSU, they will have plenty of time to climb back up the rankings, a la 2014. Obviously two losses would be devastating, while not 100 percent fatal to the team’s playoff hopes, depending on what else happens around the country.

From there, the Buckeyes have three winnable games in October (Indiana, Minnesota, and Purdue), before having their open date fall in Week 9. After the off week, OSU will finish the regular season with three formidable foes in the final four weeks; Nebraska, Michigan State, and Michigan.

The recent shellackings that the Buckeyes have given the Huskers not withstanding, the program should have a new-found energy under first-year head coach Scott Frost, and don’t let last year’s 48-3 win over the Spartans blind you into forgetting that Mark Dantonio’s team regularly plays OSU tough, even if there is an obvious talent discrepancy. I would assume that both Nebraska and MSU will come into these November games with massive chips on their respective shoulders, looking to knock Ohio State out of the playoff picture.

Then, of course, I don’t need to tell you that the Buckeyes will finish their regular season against The Team Up North, looking to run their winning streak in the rivalry to seven-consecutive games (not to mention 15 of the last 17).

Like last year, I foresee exciting early and late season action for the Buckeyes, with a slog of blowouts in between. However, unlike in 2017, OSU will be breaking in a new QB— whomever that will be— so having a bit of a mid-season respite after the early crucibles of TCU and Penn State should give the team more time to settle into the new status quo as it makes a run at another National Championship.

“The emergence of the sophomore into a pass-rushing sensation probably isn’t going to take anybody by surprise considering the hype around Chase Young’s recruitment and what he showed when he played last season. ”

-Austin Ward, Land of 10

Spring games in college football are much like spring training for baseball; every team has a chance to win it all, and every player has a shot at a breakout season. With that in mind, it is probably prudent to take all of the offensive weapons on display this past Saturday with at least a grain or two of salt.

Head coach Urban Meyer was clear that they limited what the defense would be able to do during the game by design, but that didn’t stop a handful of defensive players from flexing their muscles during the scrimmage.

With Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard, and Jalyn Holmes prepping to have their names called in the NFL Draft next week, there is an open defensive end slot opposite Nick Bosa, who somehow will be a full-time starter for the first time this season.

After a dynamite game on Saturday, it is clear that former five-star recruit Chase Young is ready to bookend the line during his sophomore season. With the speed and athleticism that both Bosa and Young have, ideally defensive line coach Larry Johnson will allow them to put as much pressure on opposing quarterbacks as possible, since it looks like the secondary will need some time to get up to speed, following another talent-exodus from the back of the Buckeye defense.

Two other players that Ward highlights in the article are linebackers Baron Browning and Justin Hilliard. There has been plenty of criticism of how LB coach Bill Davis’ corp performed in 2017, but with Browning and Hilliard both healthy (not to mention Tuf Borland, when he’s 100 percent), there is reason for optimism from the position group in the fall.

“The Big Ten is a conference to watch down the stretch. The most bids the Big Ten has gotten in a single year is five and it could at least match that this season as the top six teams in the league all have solid regional cases. Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio State are all fighting for bids, with Minnesota and Ohio State getting the nod this week.”

-Teddy Cahill and Michael Lananna, Baseball America

With one month remaining in the regular season, the baseball Buckeyes have put together a solid season so far, currently sitting on a 24-10 record, including a 5-1 mark in the early Big Ten season, the Buckeyes are on track for Big Ten and NCAA Tournament berths.

Though there is a lot of time left in the season, Baseball America is forecasting the Buckeyes as the third seed in a four-team regional bracket with Duke, Oklahoma, and High Point. Now, these projections will certainly change more than once by the time the official selections are announced in late May, but the Buckeyes being in as of now, is a solid sign of respect for their out-of-conference season.

Greg Beal’s squad currently is 40th in national RPI, behind Indiana (24), Illinois (36), and Minnesota (38) in the Big Ten; Michigan isn’t too far behind at 52. With so many teams bunched together, that should make for an exciting conference season, as OSU looks to get back in the NCAA Tournament after failing to even make the B1G Tourney in 2017.

With vacant starting spots limited on the line, the former four-star recruit will continue his playing career elsewhere.

Via a social media post, redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Matthew Burrell announced that he would be transferring from Ohio State following the recently wrapped spring practice.

A former four-star recruit out of Woodbridge, Virginia, Burrell had been thought to be in contention to take over one of the vacant spots on the line this season, but as other options emerged, his standing in the rotation declined.

Screen_Shot_2018_04_18_at_5.56.30_PM.png

After playing in 13 games during his redshirt freshman campaign in 2016, Burrell saw action in 12 games last season, including the final 10. However, with Thayer Munford working his way into a likely starting position, there just weren’t a lot of options for the 6-foot-3, 306-pounder to crack the starting lineup.

In his social media post, Burrell thanked everyone at Ohio State for his opportunities, and said that he was not sure where he would continue his collegiate career. Wherever the lineman ends up, he will have two years of eligibility remaining.

We wish Burrell the best at wherever his journey takes him.

There’s a lot of speculation about who will be the No. 1 quarterback for the Buckeyes in 2018, but Haskins is trying to rise above it.

There has been a lot of focus since the final snap of the 2017 season on who will end up being the new No. 1 quarterback for Ohio State. After so many years of counting on J.T. Barrett, the three-time captain is no-longer an option, and Urban Meyer has said repeatedly throughout the spring that none of the three QB options have stood out enough to name the starter this far ahead of the season.

The three guys competing for the starting job are red-shirt junior Joe Burrow, red-shirt sophomore Dwayne Haskins, and red-shirt freshman Tate Martell. Burrow was the expected heir to the position, having earned the backup spot in 2016, but hand surgery ahead of the 2017 season opened the door for Haskins to get more heavily involved.

It was a bad year for Burrow to miss out on taking those garbage-time snaps, since it was in those minutes that Haskins developed enough to help lead the Buckeyes to another win over rival Michigan once Barrett was sidelined with an injury. Haskins’ performance throughout the 2017 season had some fans calling for him to take the starting job before Barrett was even out the door.

This is where things get tricky for Meyer and his staff. With a healthy Burrow back taking snaps, and Haskins already having in-game success -- not to mention, Martell’s incredible athleticism — the QB battle is apparently neck-and-neck-and-neck and the decision will be a big one.

Why are Ohio State fans excited about Haskins?

After taking a redshirt his freshman season in 2016, Haskins had fallen to No. 3 on the depth chart during spring practice in 2017. Burrow winning the backup competition was a bit surprising to fans who were expecting Haskins to come in like a young 12-gauge and start throwing bombs 70-plus yards. (He didn’t.)

But when Burrow was sidelined just ahead of the season, Haskins slid into the No. 2 spot and did everything he could to capitalize on his snaps in garbage time and stay atop the QB options behind J.T. Barrett.

Haskins saw playing time in eight games last season and went 40-of-57 for a 70.2 completion percentage, 565 yards, four TDs and only one interception. He also carried the ball 24 times for an additional 86 yards — he’s certainly no Braxton Miller, but I see him being a little more mobile than say, very-large Cardale Jones.

Haskins earned fans trust during The Game against Michigan, when he was able to fill in for an injured Barrett and lead the Buckeyes to a come-from-behind win over their rival.

During the spring game, the quarterbacks rotated between teams Scarlet and Gray, but Haskins finished the day going 9-of-19 for 120 yards and two touchdowns through the air, including a 43-yard long-ball. He may not have notched quite as many yards as Burrow on the day (238 yards), but Haskins also didn’t commit a turnover, so...

What is Haskins doing to earn the starting spot?

The quarterback won over Buckeye Nation when he committed to the program, and video surfaced of a young Haskins touring the Ohio State facility and talking about his dream of playing quarterback for the Buckeyes. Following in the foot steps of his favorite player — at least back when he was nine years old — Troy Smith, Haskins is looking to fully realize his dream and take over as the team’s starting quarterback.

After the spring game, Haskins spoke to the media about the quarterback competition, and noted that even though the team can’t really do football stuff ahead of fall camp, that he’s taking his potential role as the leader of the Buckeyes seriously. From offseason workouts to working with his receivers on Saturday mornings, he focused on “showing the coaches that I’m dedicated and ready to be in”.

Organizing workouts with his offensive teammates is a good first step in creating chemistry on the field, as well as to show coaches how seriously he’s taking the opportunity to be the starter. Haskins knows there is a lot more involved in being a No. 1 QB at a program like Ohio State, and even admits, “I feel like I’m ready, but I’m not ready.”

He explained further, “It takes time, you have to go through fall camp, and keep building our relationship, keep building the team. It’s going to take time to get there; it’s a journey more than it is a race, so we’re just working every day to get to that point.”

When it comes to putting in the work, Haskins has done everything that has been asked of him — and more — and at the end of the day, that’s all he can do. Burrow is an insanely talented quarterback as well, and Buckeye Nation is lucky to have so many qualified players to lead the charge. But what’s good for the team, isn’t necessarily great for the player, and we all know what can happen when a QB competition goes all the way through camp (cough, 2015 cough).

Haskins isn’t prepared to back down anytime soon, and while he’s not necessarily sick of talking about the QB battle, he’s “going to keep doing what I have to do until it’s no longer a question.”

How might the competition affect Burrow and Martell?

IF Haskins wins the starting job, there are pretty big implications for the rest of the depth chart. Joe Burrow is graduating from Ohio State this spring, and if he isn’t the heir-apparent for the starting job, he’s already made it known he intends to transfer -- and as a graduate transfer, he wouldn’t be forced to sit a year before getting back on the field.

With such high stakes on the line for Burrow, Haskins is well aware that the quarterback competition can’t seep further into the group of three’s friendship off the field. Martell is the young guy in the group, and he isn’t likely to go anywhere based on this year’s decision. Plus, the coaches have alluded to coming up with some packages to get him on the field.

“I mean we’re all fighting for the same thing, we all know that,” Haskins said after the spring game. “The biggest thing for us is still being friends at the end of the day.”

Putting a priority on their off-field friendship is important, especially for those who will still be on the roster in 2018. We all saw how quickly a backup QB can be called upon, and you’d be crazy to think that Barrett’s friendship with Cardale Jones didn’t at least contribute to the team’s success through the 2014 postseason.

So who does Haskins think will be the starting quarterback in 2018? “I feel like I should be the guy, but I’m going to keep doing so until it’s proven.”

It could be a busy couple of weeks for the Buckeyes.

There’s been a pretty steady flow of Ohio State Buckeyes recruiting news in the past few months. The Buckeyes added two commitments: Ryan Jacoby and Sampson James, in March. Additionally, they’ve picked up two thus far in April, Noah Potter and Ronnie Hickman—both of which happened in the last couple of days.

That flow could be interrupted in the next few weeks, however, as several Buckeye targets will be announcing their commitments before summer rolls around. Let’s take a look at who some of those recruits on commitment watch are, and when Buckeye fans should expect to see them announce their college decisions.

Garrett Wilson

Of all the names on this list, Garrett Wilson is pretty easily at the top for my pick for next recruit to commit to Ohio State. He was on campus this past weekend for an official visit, and had a fantastic trip. He’s headed to Texas for an official visit this weekend, and will be making his commitment announcement shortly after finishing that visit.

The trip to Austin is, in my opinion, a precaution, and just Wilson’s way to confirm his decision, whilst staying true to his commitment to visiting Texas. He has a very good relationship with Texas’ staff, and may ultimately just be visiting as a courtesy. Ohio State is at the top of his list right now, and I don’t expect that to change before his announcement.

Wilson, a Lake Travis product, and former teammate of Buckeye quarterback Matthew Baldwin, is ranked No. 46 nationally, and sixth among all receivers.

Cade Stover

Cade Stover is a very familiar recruit to Ohio State fans. He picked up an offer from Ohio State more than a year ago, and has been on campus quite a few times since then. He’s been pretty open about Ohio State leading in his recruitment, and nothing leads me to think that his mind has changed recently.

He visited Oklahoma this past weekend for their spring game, and while he had a good visit, Ohio State still led his recruitment after that trip. He’s heading to Columbus this weekend, and I’d be pretty surprised if he didn’t leave as a member of Ohio State’s 2019 class.

Stover is the 126th player nationally and the No. 8 ranked linebacker. He’d be the third recruit in the class from Ohio, along with Noah Potter and Ryan Jacoby.

Harry Miller

Harry Miller may be the recruit (outside of EJ Smith, the son of Emmitt Smith) that generated the most buzz this weekend at Ohio State’s spring game. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound center from Buford (Georgia) looked like a grown man roaming the sidelines, and was rumored to be a possible commit before the weekend ended.

While that commitment didn’t come, Ohio State does sit at the top of his list, and as of now, this is a two team race between the Buckeyes and Stanford. Miller will be making his announcement before he goes on a mission trip this summer, and right now, Ohio State is pretty heavy favorites.

Jordan Battle

One of the longest tenured members of the commitment watch list, this one is becoming slightly less likely everyday. Battle was extremely close to committing back in mid-March, but ultimately decided to hold off. He was scheduled to visit Columbus for the spring game, but ended up at Miami’s spring game instead, because of the possible bad weather.

While Ohio State is still at the top of Battle’s list, the commitment of Ronnie Hickman isn’t an encouraging sign for the chances of Battle joining this class. Ohio State is only looking for two safeties in 2019, and with the addition of Hickman, they only need one more. I think Battle is at the top of their list right now, but this recruitment may go into the fall depending on how Ohio State wants to play it.

Battle is 357th nationally and the 30th best safety, according to the 247sports composite.

Grant Gunnell

Ohio State could be landing their quarterback for 2019 very soon. After examining a number of options at quarterback, the Buckeyes have honed in on the pro-style (noticing a trend these past few seasons?) star from Houston. Gunnell, a former Texas A&M commit, is set to take his official visit to Columbus in two weeks, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends his recruitment shortly after that visit.

Ohio State leads this recruitment, and while Oklahoma State, LSU and Oregon are still present, this is Ohio State’s battle to lose. A good visit could very well deliver Urban Meyer his quarterback for this class.

Gunnell is ranked No. 54 nationally, and second among pro-style quarterbacks.

Price’s injury during the combine has NFL teams a little concerned.

“I’m glad I did that. To hear it from me, to make sure I can set the record straight. I control the narrative and say, ‘Hey, I’m going to be fine. I can show you everything you want to see. It’s not as significant as everyone is making it to be.’”

- Billy Price via Alexis Chassen, SB Nation

Former Ohio State center Billy Price is out on a mission to let NFL teams know that the injury he suffered during the NFL Combine isn’t going to keep him out any longer than planned. Price’s timetable for a return to health is in June, which leaves plenty of time to be ready for the season’s start. The question now is whether or not the injury will cause Price to fall some in the draft. Originally looked at as a first-round pick after switching from guard to center last season, Price might have to set new expectations depending on how the draft goes.

The good news for him is he could end up in a better situation than before, and that might help his growth in the long run as he becomes a professional. Right now, Price is expected to drop into the middle of the second round, or even further, depending on what teams decide to do. All of the doctors he’s checked with have him coming back on time but it will be up to teams to have faith in Price.

“And, just for the record, Brian Snead and touted H-back Jaelen Gill aren’t even on campus. It also doesn’t account for Demario McCall, who figures to be involved in the running game in some capacity despite primarily looking like more of a slot receiver at this point. So, if any unit qualifies as having an embarrassment of riches, Ohio State’s collection of tailbacks has to be on the short list.”

- Austin Ward, Land of 10

Ohio State has a bit of a problem. It’s a good problem to have, but a problem nonetheless. The Buckeyes have one of the deepest positions in the country at running back. For starters, you have J.K. Dobbins, coming of a Big Ten Freshman of the Year candidate performance, and Mike Weber, who has rushed for over 1,000 yards himself. From there, you have Antonio Williams who has shown marked improvement over his spring and throw in Master Teague - an early enrollee - and just those four are enough to make any football program jealous. The real problem is that there’s only one ball to give and not nearly enough minutes for all of them over the course of the game.

Add to it that the Buckeyes are also expecting Jaelen Gill later in the year and as mentioned above, Brian Snead is not expected to be a slouch either. There’s no way you can really take carries away from Dobbins or Weber so it’s going to be a tough assignment for the coaching staff in action, but running backs coach Tony Alford has done a great job in the past of making sure his players get the time.

“I think Jeremy Ruckert might be the best tight end prospect that I’ve ever seen and recruited. His skill set is ridiculous. Now it’s a question of getting him ready to play.”

- Urban Meyer via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

There are five incoming freshmen that aren’t with Ohio State this spring that could still make an impact this fall, and Ryan Ginn of Land of 10 has them all listed. Offensive lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere, running back/H-back Jaelen Gill, defensive end Tyreke Smith, safety Josh Proctor, and tight end Jeremy Ruckert all have the potential to see the field in 2018 and in expanded roles depending on how their fall camp goes.

Ruckert, especially, to me seems like he has a chance to stand out. With Marcus Baugh moving on, the spot is somewhat up for grabs but the competition has been fierce this spring.

Luke Farrell, Rashod Berry, and Jake Hausmann have been working all offseason for the starting job, so Ruckert will definitely have his work cut out for him. But if he’s as good as Meyer thinks he is, then he could be competing for that starting spot when it’s all said and done. And obviously, with all of the offensive line shifting, Petit-Frere could have an excellent chance at seeing some playing time as well.
