The athletic pass rusher has finally committed to Ohio State, and Buckeye fans should be very excited

Without going too inside baseball on the recruiting industry, it’s safe to say that this commitment was a long time coming. Cade Stover has been on commitment watch for Ohio State for what feels like the better part of the last two years, or at least since he took an unofficial visit to Columbus back in October of 2016.

At that point, the Lexington High School (Mansfield, OH) product didn’t yet hold an Ohio State offer, but it was generally assumed that when that offer came, he’d be a Buckeye. That offer did come, during a visit in March 2017, but Stover held off, much to the surprise of many, myself included. His wait continued through five more visits and camps in the last year, though his interest in Ohio State never wavered.

Stover did his due diligence, visiting Penn State twice and taking an official visit to Oklahoma two weeks ago, but those visits only further cemented Ohio State as the leader in his mind. A trip to Columbus last weekend for his official visit sealed the deal, and after taking a week to think it over, just minutes ago, Stover finally made the announcement that could’ve come anytime in the last year. Let’s look at what this commitment means for Ohio State.

On the field

Cade Stover is the definition of a Greg Schiano linebacker. He’s a long, 6-foot-4, 225 pounder, with a ton of speed (4.65 40 time) and a serious disdain for the ball carrier. He’s a violent hitter that finds his way into the backfield with ease. He’s a natural pass rusher, and an absolute handful for offensive linemen

He excels at shredding blocks, and knows how to use his hands effectively to get clear shots at the running back, quarterback, or anyone else unfortunate enough to have the ball near him. He plays safety, linebacker, defensive end and quarterback for his high school team, and is capable of playing in coverage, though I expect he’ll likely end up at outside linebacker or defensive end for Ohio State.

He needs to add weight to play either of those positions at the next level, but he has the frame and athleticism to play a very similar style to Darron Lee if he ends up at linebacker, or Sam Hubbard if they want him on the line. He’s not the most technically sound pass-rusher at this point, but if Ohio State wants him on the edge, Larry Johnson will get him right very quickly.

Wherever Stover plays, Ohio State is getting a high-motor player that loves to hit, and never gives up on the play. That’s exactly what they want.

In the class

Stover is the eighth member of Ohio State’s class, and the first linebacker, or the second defensive end, depending on where the Buckeyes want him. My prediction right now is on the line, meaning that he could line up alongside Noah Potter at some point in the future. He compliments Potter very well, as I see Potter more as a run-stuffer than a pass-rusher.

Stover is the second commitment of the weekend, joining safety Bryson Shaw, who committed last night. He likely won’t be the last commit of the weekend either, as Texas receiver Garrett Wilson is set to announce his pledge tonight, and I’m very confident that he’ll be a Buckeye.

Stover’s commitment jumps Ohio State up to tenth nationally, and they currently have the second best class with eight or fewer commits, behind just Georgia. They have a number of top targets left, so it should be another great recruiting cycle for the Buckeyes.

Stover is the first of two big potential BOOOOMS for the Buckeyes on Sunday.

It’s been a busy weekend for the Ohio State football team. In addition to all of the players drafted and signed as NFL free agents, the Buckeyes also picked up a commitment from three-star Bryson Shaw on Saturday. But, they added an even bigger piece to their 2019 puzzle with the commitment of four-star outside linebacker, Cade Stover.

— Cade Stover (@cstov8) April 29, 2018

The Mansfield, Ohio native is the fourth-ranked player in the state in his class, and is considered the 130th best player in the country, according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings. He also currently sits as the eighth best linebacker nationally.

Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 225 pounds, Stover also had offers from Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Michigan, Notre Dame, West Virginia, Texas, and many others. Kevin Wilson led the recruiting for the Buckeyes.

Stover’s commitment to the Buckeyes makes eight pledges for the 2019 class, and he is their third in-state commitment for the class as well.

Ohio State is also waiting on the commitment announcement from five-star wide receiver Garrett Wilson. The Austin, Texas native is scheduled to announce his decision on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET. Considered a heavy OSU lean, Texas and Oklahoma State are still considered in the mix.

The Buckeyes carry a 3-game win streak into the postseason.

The No. 19 Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team ended the regular season on a high note, defeating Rutgers, 10-7, Saturday in Columbus. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 8-6 on the season, including a 3-2 conference mark. The win also secured a spot in the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 3 seed. The tournament is scheduled to begin Thursday in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Buckeyes are scheduled to face Johns Hopkins, the two-seed, who defeated Ohio State 13-10 earlier this month. Maryland once again won the regular season title, and will be the top seed in this year’s tournament, facing fourth-seeded Rutgers.

On Senior Day, it was the veteran leaders on the team who stepped up early and often for Ohio State. In the opening quarter, senior defenseman and captain Erik Evans scored his first goal of the season less than three minutes into play to put the Buckeyes up one, assisted by sophomore midfielder Ryan Terefenko. Senior attackman Colin Chell, Evans’ co-captain, scored the next goal for Ohio State on a feed from junior attackman Jack Jasinski. Rutgers’ attack finally found a rhythm midway through the first, as Casey Rose scored unassisted to narrow the Buckeyes’ lead to one.

In the second quarter, freshman midfielder Jackson Reid responded with an unassisted goal of his own to keep the lead at two and breaking a nearly 13-minute scoring drought. Rutgers’ Tommy Coyne answered with an assisted goal before Reid found the back of the net for his first score of the game. One more goal for the Scarlet Knights sent the teams to the half with the Buckeyes leading 4-3.

In the third, however, the Buckeyes took control of the game, building an insurmountable lead as Ohio State’s attack held the ball for nearly the entire first half of the quarter. The Buckeyes scored four straight goals, kicked off by a shot from freshman attackman J.T. Bugliosi, assisted by Chell. Sophomore attackman Tre Leclaire then scored his 25th goal of the season before Reid scored his second of the game, assisted by Terefenko. Sophomore attackman Lukas Buckley capped the run, putting the Buckeyes up 8-3.

Two-straight goals from Rutgers were not enough to mount a comeback, as Ohio State responded in the fourth with another score from Reid, with Chell on the assist, and another goal from Chell himself, sealing the win for the home team.

Reid led his team in scoring, and the senior Chell followed with two goals and two assists on the day. The Buckeyes shared the ball well, with seven players scoring in all. Led by freshman Justin Inacio, Ohio State controlled a dominant 18-of-21 faceoffs. Sophomore goalie Josh Kirson had nine saves on the day. The two teams were dead even with 16 shots on goal apiece, but the Buckeyes held a 26-16 advantage in ground balls.

I mean, they finished fourth in the B1G East this season. What did you expect?

The University of Michigan has a proud history of gridiron success. In fact— I don’t know if you’ve heard this before—, they are the winningest program in the history of college football. The prodigious annals of Wolverine football are littered with crowning accomplishments and glorious achievements. The 2018 NFL Draft was neither of those things.

Over the three days of the draft, only two Michigan men had their names called; center Mason Cole went 97th to the Arizona Cardinals, and defensive tackle Maurice Hurst went 140th to the Oakland Raiders. Of course, for comparison, the Ohio State Buckeyes had seven players selected, including the No. 4 overall pick, Denzel Ward (not to mention Billy Price going to the Bengals with the 21st pick).

However, the Buckeyes weren’t the only Big Ten team to have a player selected before Jim Harbaugh’s squad did. Penn State’s Saquon Barkley went second to the New York Giants and Maryland wide receiver D.J. Moore was selected by the Carolina Panthers with the 24th pick in the first round. The second round saw two players from Iowa selected, along with another from both PSU and OSU (Tyquan Lewis), and Rutgers’ Kemoko Turay heard his name called with the 20th pick of the round.

Yes, that’s right, Rutgers had a player selected in the 2018 NFL Draft before the venerable UM football institution did.

In the third round, the Buckeyes’ Jerome Baker and Sam Hubbard were selected before Cole finally got Michigan on the board. However, it wasn’t just the B1G that was lapping the Wolverines in terms of selections, but it was the Football Championship Subdivision and Division II as well.

FCS program’s South Carolina State (Darius Lenard), South Dakota State (Dallas Goedert), and Sam Houston State (P.J. Hill) were represented by the fourth, 17th, and 25th picks of the second round, respectively. Similarly, DII’s Fort Hays State (Nathan Shepherd) and Humboldt State (Alex Cappa) both had players selected before Cole was picked.

But, That Team Up North’s draft troubles weren’t just limited to when their first player was picked, but also extended to how many players, in total, were taken. Alabama led the way with 12 selections this season, and Ohio State was top in the B1G with seven. Michigan was tied with Indiana, Maryland, and Rutgers with two players picked. Penn State (6), Wisconsin (5), and Iowa (3) came in behind the Buckeyes, and before the Maize and Blue.

In terms of selections— with two total— the Wolverines were in the company of football factories like SMU (3), Southern Miss (3), Temple (2), Tulane (2), Western Kentucky (2), and Western Michigan (2).

Now, since the Wolverines found out last week that Ole Miss transfer quarterback Shea Patterson is officially eligible to play for Harbaugh’s squad, things could turn around for them in the future.

Who knows, maybe they will finish better than third in the B1G East this season.

Griffin Brothers Reunite In Seattle

Shaquem Griffin was the subject of one of the fascinating storylines in this year’s draft due to him and the birth defect that left him with one hand at such a young age.

He is certainly a fighter as he turned into quite the young man and an even better football player that has caught the attention of the NFL Executives and most notably, the Seattle Seahawks organization who were the only team to bring him in for a private interview during the draft process.

Another layer in this great story is the fact that his twin brother who played alongside Shaquem in college is also a Seahawk and like a storybook ending, both of the brothers will have a chance to do it once again in the NFL.

Shaquem may appear to be limited with one hand, but there is hope that he will utilize his ability to blow past the slower tackles and disrupt offenses and getting to the quarterback. In a move to get a little younger and after trading the majority of their defense, they are looking to rebuild for the future with a less outspoken approach to their craft toward social issues that are plaguing America.

Jalyn Holmes, DE

The first Buckeye off the board is Holmes and he found a home with the Vikings in the 4th Round. With an already young and stout defense, the Vikings took a chance on Holmes based on his potential and his physical traits.

He projects as a DE and he will likely have to lose some weight to blossom into a key reserve at worst or a late bloomer, that turns into a key rotational player or a starter at best. Potential is often thrown around loosely, but I believe that he will blossom into the latter because I believe in Coach Johnson and what he brings to the table at Ohio State. He certainly has a lot of work to do, but he is ready.

Jamarco Jones, OT

I think the Seattle Seahawks had one of the best drafts in 2018 and with the addition of a falling Jamarco Jones in the 5th Round, they have a multi-year starter that is versatile and is considered a plug-and-play addition to an inexperienced line.

Jones’ fall was unexpected and the Seahawks drafted an agile and consistent player that is very durable. A stalwart at Ohio State and a bookend tackle, Jones will use this slight as motivation to earn a starting spot and what better situation is there than in Seattle, where they have struggled to piece together an offensive line since their Super Bowl victory against my Broncos.

Michael Hill, DT

Hill was in turbulent waters in his final season at Ohio State, where he was suspended for 6 games and afterward, he played sparingly in a deep D-Line rotation for the Buckeyes.

He, like all Buckeyes, made the best of his opportunities often eating double teams and acting as a roadblock often disrupting the running game. Hill is most likely a project, but he will have to earn what he gets in training camp because nothing is guaranteed in the NFL. Hill does not have the motor of most Silver Bullets, but this will be the perfect time to make people eat their words with this opportunity as a UDFA with the Detroit Lions.

Tracy Sprinkle, DT

Sprinkle suffered a season-ending injury in 2016 and during his final season he was not as productive, but not because he had no impact on the game. He was a rotational player who played in the Buckeye rotation in the D-Line and he certainly has the tools to succeed at the next level.

Like Hill, Sprinkle is a space eater that will be plugged in to eat up blocks and be disruptive in whatever defensive scheme he falls under. As a UDFA with the Carolina Panthers, he will get a chance to play with Star Lotulelei leaving during free agency, but it will be an uphill battle that can be won. Determination and being a man is preached at Ohio State and the confidence level will be high with every Buckeye taking part in the NFL Draft.

Chris Worley, LB

Worley was the ILB at Ohio State at the start of the 2017 season before getting beat out by Tuf Borland. After losing his starting position, he took over duties as an OLB after Dante Booker was injured, where he had a decent season.

Worley signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as a UDFA and he is the 3rd Buckeye to join the team via the draft as he joins Billy Price and Sam Hubbard. Worley did not test well in the combine and is often viewed as a system guy with less than ideal athleticism, but that is false–he can ball if placed in the right system.

With the Bengals, Worley is needed depth to an again defense that has some character concerns. The addition of Buckeyes signals a changing of the guard with high character players to wash out the negative stigma in Cincinnati.

Marcus Baugh, TE

Baugh was a highly ranked recruit out of California and he will be coming back to his home state after signing as a UDFA with the Oakland Raiders. He had high expectations coming out of high school, but it has been a long road for him until his final year at Ohio State.

Baugh was used more often this year and he was the recipient of the game-clinching TD at home versus Penn State. He is a good pass catcher that needs to build strength and work on his blocking skills. The Raiders have an opening at TE and with Baugh, they add one more name to their roster to compete.

Damon Webb, S

Webb landed in the ideal spot after signing with the Tennessee Titans as a UDFA joining former Buckeye Defensive Backs Coordinator Kerry Coombs in the NFL and Mike Vrabel, who coached alongside Luke Fickell and is a former Buckeye great.

Due to the familiarity with both coaches, it makes a ton of sense for Webb, who will use this as motivation. He was a ballhawk at Ohio State and he can play in the box. Adding him to the young secondary will be scary if he can turn the light on during camp. He is an aggressive playmaker that could be a great depth piece and the teams that passed up on him will regret it once he figures it out.

JT Barrett, QB

Barrett is the winningest quarterback to come out of Ohio State and he just signed as a UDFA with the Indianapolis Colts. In an interesting move, the Colts added a winner to a questionable QB room outside of Andrew Luck, who has been bitten by the injury bug lately.

Jacoby Brissett, Brad Kaaya, and Phillip Walker are all fighting for the backup role, and with the addition of Barrett it will make things interesting and he has a realistic shot at making the 53 man roster if he continues his winning ways.

He certainly has the tools to succeed at the next level and with the Colts, it is his best shot. He will give it his best shot moving forward.

A veteran member of the Buckeye defensive line finds his way to the NFL.

Another member of the Ohio State Buckeyes has found a home in the NFL. This time, it’s defensive tackle Michael Hill, who was picked up by the Detroit Lions following the draft. The Buckeye didn’t have to wait long before the three-day even wrapped up before landing on a roster, and he’s got the experience to make the most of this opportunity.

So, why should you be excited for Lewis’ arrival in Detroit? We’ve got you covered.

1. Veteran experience

After the first few rounds of the NFL Draft, teams start looking for value picks. Combine a team need with a player’s experience, and you have a late-round pick that not only has a ton of value, but may actually be a key cog in the team’s pursuit of a Super Bowl.

Michael Hill has the potential to be that key cog. Counting the three games in his redshirted season in 2013, Hill saw action in 42 contests for the Scarlet and Gray. Of those 42 games, he had the chance to start in 15 of them. While 13 of those starts happened in 2016, they are starts nonetheless for a team that went to the College Football Playoff.

2. He holds his own

On the D-Line, you’re hoping to get someone who can fight through the offense and make a play on the ball. Over the course of his Buckeye career, Hill has evolved in his ability to seek out the ball carrier and make a tackle.

In this example, who breaks away from the lineman, and helps wrap up the running back in a red zone situation.

Ohio State could have some of the best defensive tackles in the Big Ten, if not, the country. Big fan of Michael Hill! Solid play by #86 pic.twitter.com/pKtA0CHwi5

— Russell Brown (@RussNFLDraft) July 16, 2017

By the time he was done wearing the Scarlet and Gray, Hill amassed 37 career tackles and 5.5 tackles-for-loss, and a pair of sacks.

3. Recognition for work done

Getting on the field in the 2017 season came at a premium for Hill. He only played in eight games, with only one start. However, he shined in the 2016 campaign for the Buckeyes.

Statistically, that was his best season; he recorded 21 tackles and 3.0 tackles-for-loss. For his redshirt junior season, Hill picked up honorable mention All-Big Ten by both the coaches and the media.

Off the field, Hill found success, too. He graduated with a degree in sports & industry from Ohio State in December 2017.

Any concerns about Hill?

His redshirt senior season was supposed to begin where his stellar junior season ended. However, that didn’t really happen. Hill was suspended for the first six games due to a violation of team rules.

Combine the suspension with the wealth of talent OSU had on the defensive line, and you have a situation where Hill, the incumbent starter, was battling just to get on the field. He did get to play in eight games for his redshirt senior season, but only started in one of those games. From a stats perspective, last season tied a career-low for tackles: one.

He’ll have to shine in training camp for a spot on the team, but he has the experience at a top school that should help him be a viable candidate to make the main roster.

It’s been a bumpy road for the Buckeye, but he showed loads of potential during the 2016 season.

He may not have heard his name called during the 2018 NFL Draft, but Ohio State DT Michael Hill will still get a shot at an NFL career. The Detroit Lions signed the Buckeye as an undrafted free agent, and Hill will now head to rookie camp.

Free Agent Alert: @MichaelReal77 ➡️ @Lions #GoBucks #DevelopedHere #OnePride pic.twitter.com/mftyibOJGn

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) April 29, 2018

The 6’3, 305-pound Buckeye got to Columbus in 2013, but didn’t see his first taste of action until the team’s 2014 championship season, when he played in five games. He finished his Ohio State career with 37 total tackles (5.5 for loss) and two sacks, in 42 games and 15 starts.

He was a full-time starter in 2016, recording 21 of his 37 tackles, and was Honorable mention All-Big Ten by the coaches and media. He would have had a bigger role in 2017 as a senior, but was suspended for what ended up being the first six games of the season — although the nature of the suspension wasn’t addressed.

“How much playing time? We’ll see,” Schiano said, when Hill was reinstated. “That will all play out with however [defensive line coach Larry Johnson] plans to use him. But he’s an experienced guy who has played really good football for us over time.”

Congrats to Michael Hill for getting another opportunity to extend his football playing career.

The four-year starter holds every conceivable passing record at Ohio State. He’ll be an asset to his new squad.

It has finally happened: J.T. Barrett has signed with an NFL team. The three-time Ohio State captain was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent. He’ll be behind Andrew Luck on the depth chart, but if he can find a spot on the team after camp, Luck is a very good QB to learn from.

So, why should you be excited the Colts signed Barrett? We’ve got you covered:

1. He’s not really a rookie

Okay that might be a stretch, but Barrett is one of the most experienced players in this year’s draft class, and his maturity, at least, will certainly not be a question heading into camp.

Barrett started for Ohio State as a redshirt freshman through his senior season, only sitting out for a few games during the stretch. While his opening performances against Navy and Virginia Tech weren’t great, he certainly didn’t look like a freshman by the time the Buckeyes faced Michigan in November of 2014, already having broken a Big Ten record with 45 touchdowns in his premiere season. However, Barrett’s impact went beyond his time on the field in Columbus.

Former Ohio State tight end Nick Vannett described Barrett as a “true field general.” A born leader, Barrett is the only three-time captain in Ohio State history, serving in the role even during the few games that Cardale Jones started over him in 2015. Perhaps it’s the fact that both of Barrett’s parents, Stacy and Joe, served in the Army, but Barrett’s leadership skills are perhaps his most valuable asset.

2. Pressure means nothing

Some players panic when their teams start to struggle. That’s not Barrett. In fact, he seems to get better as the going gets tough, which is crucial for players transitioning to the highest level of competition in football.

For proof, look to his performances against Penn State in 2014 and 2017--two very different games which both exhibit the kind of resilience that made Barrett a great college quarterback.

In 2014, the Buckeyes blew a 17-0 lead to James Franklin’s Nittany Lions, starting with a pick-six thrown by Barrett himself. But Barrett stayed calm, scoring two touchdowns in two overtime periods to secure the victory for Ohio State.

The 2017 story was more heroic, as Barrett pulled his team out of a deficit which stretched as large as 18 points. The senior went 33-of-39 for 328 passing yards and four touchdowns. His fourth quarter was perfect, capping the comeback for the Buckeyes as he completed 13-of-13 passing attempts, including three touchdowns.

— Buckeye Videos+ (@BuckeyeVideos) October 28, 2017

The matchup of top-five teams and the daunting task of coming back from a deficit did not faze the senior. Urban Meyer said of Barrett’s performance “I’ve never had a kid play perfect, but damn he was close tonight.”

3. What doesn’t kill him makes him stronger

In what would seemingly be a huge point against him, Barrett has actually been injured a lot--from an ACL tear to a broken ankle to a meniscus issue exacerbated by a rogue cameraman. However, Barrett has managed to come back stronger than ever after each injury, no matter how serious. Despite tearing his ACL and meniscus as a senior in high school, Barrett ended up enrolling early at Ohio State and studied under Braxton Miller before taking over the starting role in August 2014.

The broken ankle against Michigan in 2014 proved more cost-worthy for Barrett personally, as it eventually led to Cardale Jones taking the Buckeyes through the post-season to a College Football Playoff title and winning the starting spot the following fall. Still, Barrett’s mobility didn’t seem to be affected once he did return to the field. He still rushed for 11 touchdowns in 2015, equaling his total from 2014, and averaged 5.9 yards per rushing attempt--the best average of his four seasons. Then there was the meniscus. In short, Barrett had surgery and was back on the field a week later to face Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship game. “Machine” is a word you might insert here.

4. He is versatile

Coming out of high school, Barrett was considered the No. 2 dual threat quarterback recruit in the nation. He continued to show that ability in four seasons with the Buckeyes. As a result, he is first in program history in both career passing yards (9,434) and touchdowns (104), fourth in career rushing touchdowns (43) and seventh in career rushing yards (3,263).

JT Barrett making magic happen! #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/exVW9Arg1c

— Buckeye Videos+ (@BuckeyeVideos) October 7, 2017

While this sort of versatility generally gets stomped out pretty quickly in the NFL, where high-caliber defenses snuff out even better-than-mediocre scramblers, some quarterbacks have been able to continue to rely on their rushing game. Russell Wilson looks like an easy comparison, but Barrett looks in many ways like Alex Smith--who also happened to be coached by Urban Meyer at Utah. Smith is similar in his scrambling ability (both Smith and Barrett actually ran 4.7-second 40s), and scouts had analogous concerns about Smith playing in the spread throughout college.

If Barrett can continue to evade defenders at the NFL level, he could prove to be the next in line of a rare breed of true dual threat NFL quarterbacks.

5. Despite the haters, he still gets the job done

Meyer owns the best winning percentage of any Ohio State coach in program history, sitting at 73-8 overall. In four of his six seasons, he has had Barrett at the helm of his offense for most of the year. Throughout those years, the Buckeyes went 44-6 in games where Barrett played.

Yes, the quarterback had the advantage of a ridiculous amount of NFL-level talent surrounding him on offense (e.g., Ezekiel Elliott and the entire set of offensive lines for several years) and a defense which, at a minimum, kept Ohio State in most games. However, there is something to be said for a player who simply knows how to win and who can make the players around him better. It’s sometimes ugly, but when Barrett takes the field, his team more often than not comes out on top.

Any concerns about Barrett?

Realistically? Plenty. Barrett is not a pro-style quarterback in a league which still favors that type of player. Having played primarily in the spread, he hasn’t been forced to rely on downfield passing options, and has struggled when put in that type of situation (i.e. all of 2017 under Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day). Accuracy, especially on the long ball, has been a consistent problem throughout his time in Columbus.

He has been critiqued for his fundamentals, and his arm strength is questionable. He is also small for the NFL, standing at 6-foot-1, 224 pounds, which could hamper his ability to rush in an NFL loaded with bigger and stronger defensive players.

Buckeye tight ends don’t get the most pass-catching experience, but they tend to be great blockers.

The Oakland Raiders signed themselves a tight end, as they picked up Ohio State’s Marcus Baugh as an undrafted free agent. So, if you are a fan of the Raiders, why should you be excited that they signed Baugh? We’ve got you covered:

1. An increase in production each year

Baugh saw action in 59 games wearing the scarlet and gray. After playing in 12 games (and only getting two receiving yards) during the Buckeyes title run of 2014, he ended his senior season with 304 yards, 28 receptions and five touchdowns, his personal season-best in all three categories.

He got more of the workload starting in his junior season, a year in which he started in all 13 of Ohio State’s games. When J.T. Barrett got him the ball, it was worth a good chunk of yardage; Baugh had an average of 11.1 yards per catch in his final two seasons.

He’ll have to adapt to the NFL, but if he gets enough time to do that, then he’ll have a real shot at hauling in catches at the TE position on Sundays.

2. Clutch catches in tight games

With the increased workload also came increased responsibilities. In two games this past season, he played a critical part in getting Ohio State back into winning position.

Against Penn State, he only caught two passes, but one of them was monumental in helping the Buckeyes overcome the large early deficit at home. Baugh created space in the final minutes to catch what would prove to be the game-winning touchdown against the Nittany Lions.

— SportsTime Ohio (@SportsTimeOhio) October 28, 2017

His other biggest catch of the season came against Michigan. With the Buckeyes trailing, 14-7, Baugh slipped behind the Wolverines’ defense for a 25-yard TD reception. The score would even things up, as two of college football’s biggest rivals went into halftime tied.

Back in 2016, Baugh had his best receiving day for Ohio State in a losing effort. He pulled in five catches for 55 yards on the road against Penn State. However, that’s the game where PSU blocked a late field goal—and returned it for the go-ahead touchdown.

Like many of the starters for Ohio State, Baugh never really faltered in the big moments.

3. Can hang onto catches in traffic

Whenever he was targeted, Baugh did everything he could to haul in the football for yardage. He ran into defenders right after the pigskin hit his hands—and still managed to hold onto possession. Listed at 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, Baugh can hold his own when catching and running with the ball.

In this clip from the 2016 game against Rutgers, the Riverside, California native goes across the field for the catch with a defender right on him. He makes the reception, and then wrestles his way through two more defenders into the end zone.

— Lantern TV (@LanternTV) October 1, 2016
4. Athleticism

Cardale Jones hurdled a guy when the Buckeyes made their first trip to College Park, Maryland to face the then-newly minted Big Ten member Maryland.

Marcus Baugh carried on the tradition of just jumping over people—which happened to also include another Maryland man. However, we’ll show another occasion of where Marcus took flight. Against Bowling Green in 2016, a Falcon defender went for the hit on Baugh, only to end up looking like a fool.

Having the dexterity to hop over opponents certainly elevates his cool-factor. Exciting plays get the people goin’, and when Baugh jumped over defenders, the people got goin’ in a big way.

5. Recognition on and off the field

Like many of the seniors in this OSU class, they all leave their college days with awards, rings, gold pants, and a degree.

The last two seasons were honorable mention All-Big Ten for the TE, with both the media and coaches agreeing. His trophy case also got jammed pack with rings, as a National Championship, Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Cotton Bowl were picked up for bowl season wins; and two Big Ten championship rings got added after the Bucks rolled past Wisconsin in 2014 and 2017.

Above all that is the piece of paper that Baugh earned in December. With a degree in Criminology, Baugh left Ohio State as a graduate. Not everyone can say that.

Any concerns about Baugh?

One of things that should excite you about Baugh may also be a concern. The recent history of successful Buckeye TEs puts pressure on Baugh to be at the same level by the time he joins his new team. Nick Vannett was drafted in the third round in 2016; and before that, Jeff Heuerman was also a third-round selection in 2015.

Blocking will be an important skill set for a TE to have when they get to the NFL. For Baugh, two of his weaknesses in his NFL.com draft profile is that he’s “unable to sustain blocks” and “lacks play strength and tenacity as run blocker.” He’ll have to work on both if he wants to find himself on the main roster as the seasons starts.

However, by being a mainstay as a Buckeye starter, he knows what it takes to perform at a high level.

I wouldn’t discount J.T.’s pro prospects just yet.

I’ll be honest with you, until it was reported that J.T. Barrett had signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts, a part of me thought that he hadn’t been selected because he somehow had found a loophole in the NCAA rules allowing him to return for another season at Ohio State. Whether to the joy or dismay of Buckeye fans, that is not the case. Though the most productive quarterback in OSU history didn’t hear his name called during the seven rounds of the NFL Draft, there’s no question that he’s been counted out before, and still managed to prove his doubters wrong.

J.T. Barrett is signing with the Colts as an undrafted free agent. He’s familiar with Lucas Oil Stadium https://t.co/ryAJGXc5cL

— SB Nation NFL (@SBNationNFL) April 28, 2018

Trying to recap the career of the Wichita, Falls, Texas native in one article would require an insane amount of column inches, but despite the fickle nature of the Ohio State fanbase, it is safe to say that J.T. Barrett is the single-most decorated quarterback in the history of Ohio State, the Big Ten conference, and perhaps the NCAA.

The holder of 39 different, individual records (a list of which you can see below), Barrett is Ohio State’s only three-time captain, and the only starting quarterback to win four games in college football’s greatest and most storied rivalry, Ohio State vs. Michigan.

Barrett was instrumental in leading the Buckeyes to the first-ever College Football Playoff National Championship, and while a broken ankle prevented him from playing in the postseason, his leadership while he was under center, and after he was injured, is the stuff of legend.

A three-time Big Ten Quarterback of the Year, in addition to holding the OSU record for passing and total offensive yards in a career, he also ranks seventh in school history in terms of rushing yards. In addition to his three Griese-Brees B1G QB of the Year Awards, he was also given the Chicago Tribune’s Silver Football as the league’s best player in 2016, and is a two-time All-Big Ten first-team selection, and was an All-American in 2014.

However, despite his ridiculous amount of accolades, there are few that believe that his accomplishments will translate to a successful career as an NFL starting quarterback.

As scouts project Barrett to the next level, they note that he is not a naturally accurate passer, especially on deep balls; he completed only 28 percent of his throws over 21 yards as a senior. Even though he measured in at just over 6’1 at the NFL Combine, the fact that he throws the ball with a 3/4 delivery, makes him seem even shorter in the pocket.

Critics also note that Barrett was too reliant on his legs at OSU; often abandoning his progressions when pressure approached; although he improved over time. He also had a tendency to opt for the shorter, safer routes, even when receivers were open downfield.

However, there has rarely been a leader in the college game like Barrett. He is a powerful runner, able to pick up valuable, difficult yards. He also has developed into a quarterback comfortable standing in the pocket and taking a hit to deliver a pass. Scouts also note that he has an innate ability to understand the defenses being played against him, and is able to look safeties off, and understands when corners are attempting to bait him.

Whether or not Barrett ever achieves anything in the pros that approaches his success in college is yet to be seen. However, he has already proven that he has the requisite skills to be a valuable member of an NFL roster in some capacity. Congrats to J.T., I certainly would never count him out of anything, and I can’t wait to see him prove people wrong, yet again.

A productive 2017 campaign helps this Buckeye lineman land in the NFL as an UDFA.

Another member of the vaunted Ohio State Buckeyes defensive line has found a home in the professional football ranks. This time, it’s the Elyria, Ohio, native Tracy Sprinkle. The Carolina Panthers signed Sprinkle as an undrafted free agent just after the seventh round finished up.

So, why should you be excited the Panthers signed Sprinkle? Well, we have you covered.

1. A strong ending to his Buckeye career

Progression—not regression—is what you want when drafting guys, as well picking them up after the draft in free agency. His sophomore season included action in 12 games, but only yielded four tackles. Fast forward to his senior season, and Sprinkle put together his most success campaign in the Scarlet and Gray: playing in 13 games, with 10 of those being starts. On top of seeing more time in a starting role, Sprinkle tallied 16 tackles, 3.0 tackles-for-loss and a pass deflection.

At Ohio State’s pro day, he drew the attention of the New England Patriots own Bill Belichick, who ran some drills with Sprinkle. When a team as successful as the Pats come looking, you know you have to be doing something right.

— Scott Petrak ct (@ScottPetrak) March 22, 2018

Now in the NFL, expect Sprinkle to keep working hard. It was a necessary trait at Ohio State, as on any given day the backups could become the starter through hard work.

2. A proven leader

Things weren’t perfect for Sprinkle at OSU. In July 2014, he was arrested in a bar brawl that led to a suspension and eventual dismissal from the team. However, after the more serious charges from that brawl fight (possession of cocaine) were dropped, he worked his way back into the good graces of the football program.

When the 2017 season began, Sprinkle was named one of the captains of the football team. If you would’ve said in August 2014 that Sprinkle would become a captain of the OSU football team, the odds would’ve been astronomical. But, every now and then, change takes place.

Sprinkle has matured after that incident, culminating with him being elected as a leader. Missteps happen, but when you’re a football player, those missteps are amplified. Sprinkle has had his missteps and learned from them—which is the important thing.

3. He overcame adversity

After getting back to the team after the brawl incident, Sprinkle saw occasional moments on the field as a sophomore. Things started to look up as a junior, as he got the start. However, things would go downhill quickly.

Sprinkle suffered a knee injury, which would sideline him for the rest of his junior season. He bounced back, though, and ended his Buckeye career on a high-note. In the third game of the 2017 season, he set a career-high with five tackles against Army—proving that he was back for good.

Any concerns about Sprinkle?

Only one solid year of data points creates an unfinished picture of what Sprinkle can/can’t do. Sprinkle wasn’t invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, which hurt his chances to prove doubters wrong.

The season-ending knee injury from 2016 may also be a cause for concern, as there is always a chance a re-injuring could occur.

The Buckeye linebacker has been the underdog before, and knows how to use that as motivation.

Another Ohio State Buckeye won’t be leaving the state to play professional football. Joining fellow Buckeye defensive teammates Billy Price and Sam Hubbard, Chris Worley signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent.

So, why should you be excited the Bengals drafted Worley? We’ve got you covered:

1. Big performances in big games

At a place like Ohio State, you are defined by what you do in the games that matter; and when the going got tough, Worley stood out.

The Cleveland native started in 24 games for the Buckeyes, with 23 of those coming in the last two seasons—and at least eight of those games were big matchups. In the two meetings with Oklahoma, Worley notched a total of 21 tackles (10 in 2016, and 11 in 2017). Against Michigan in 2016— a game which was arguably the most important regular season game in the Urban Meyer era— he recorded 11 tackles, which was then a career-high until the 2017 meeting with OU.

Even in the Buckeyes’ losing effort to Clemson in the 2016 Fiesta Bowl, Worley was one of the few bright spots. He picked up 10 tackles, with eight of them coming unassisted.

A foot injury caused him to miss three games last season, but he still put together an impressive highlight reel.

Worley isn’t afraid of the limelight; he embraced it.

2. High praise from his coaches

According to his draft bio by OSU athletics, Greg Schiano said that Worley was a “really smart football player; he’s a guy who understands the game at a very high level”.

That quote mixes well with Worley’s results on the field. He ended his senior campaign with 56 tackles—good enough for fifth on the team. Additionally, he was invited to be part of the East-West Shrine game at the end of the season.

In his final two seasons, he picked up honorable mention for all-conference, with this past season’s recognition coming from both the coaches and the media.

3. Oh Captain, My Captain

Leadership is big data-point in not only maturity, but how one conducts himself when faced with difficult tasks. Worley was selected as one of the team captains for the Buckeyes in 2017, joining a list of other field generals that included J.T. Barrett and Billy Price.

Is it fair to point out that OSU had nine captains last season, meaning that the leadership was spread across many people? Absolutely. However, the team picks as many people that fit the bill of a team captain. If you only have two captains that show qualities of being a captain, you have two captains; if there are nine, you have nine.

The team believed in Worley’s ability to lead—and he didn’t let them down.

4. A well-rounded individual

Off the field, Worley amassed some eclectic experiences as a Buckeye. For five seasons, he was a Rolls Royce representative for the OSU football program. Additionally, he was an intern for WBNS-TV (the CBS affiliate in Columbus) in their sports department. At the 2017 Memorial Tournament, he was one of the station’s cameramen.

Working the memorial tournament !! Lol pic.twitter.com/bM7FhGmtmc

— Christopher Worley (@TheRealJizzle35) May 31, 2017
5. He comes from a place that sends people to the NFL

Glenville H.S. has had some notable Buckeyes make the leap into the professional ranks over the years. Donte Whitner and Ted Ginn Jr. both made it to Super Bowl games, while Marshon Lattimore and Cardale Jones are some of the recent members of the Glenville alumni to be drafted into the NFL.

Lattimore, who was a first-round draft pick by the New Orleans Saints, was the Defensive Rookie of the Year last season; Jones was drafted by the Buffalo Bills before being sent to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Any concerns about Worley?

From a stats perspective, he picked up fewer tackles in his senior season, compared to his junior season. As a junior, Worley started in 13 games and secured 70 tackles to help get the Buckeyes into the College Football Playoff; as a senior, he started in 10 games and had 56 tackles to his credit. The reason why he started less games in his final go-round for OSU was due to a foot injury sustained in the Army game on Sept. 16.

His draft profile on NFL.com describes some of his weaknesses as “pursuit acceleration is lacking” and that he “lacks fluidity in open field and is sluggish with change of direction.” Could the foot injury have played a role in this review? Possibly—especially if he was reviewed in the weeks coming back from the injury.

But with his leadership ability, as well as his ability to overcome adversity, Worley may very well be the sleeper pick in this year’s draft.

LGHL 5 reasons to be excited the Titans signed Damon Webb

5 reasons to be excited the Titans signed Damon Webb

usa_today_10518370.0.jpg

The Buckeye is looking to be the next in a long lineage of successful safeties at the next level.

The Tennessee Titans signed Damon Webb as an undrafted free agent. Webb, who was thought to be drafted during Day 3, slid down the board. But, he’s found a place in professional football.

So, why should you be excited the Titans picked up Webb? We’ve got you covered:

1. A consistent starter at a school known for DBs

For 27-straight games, Webb was a starter at a school known from creating NFL-grade defensive backs. The Buckeyes have produced so much talent at DB, that in some circles they are known as “DBU”.

In order to be a constant starter at OSU, you have to perform on the field. Webb did exactly that. He had nine tackles (a career-high) against Iowa, Army and Oklahoma in the 2017 season. Against Oklahoma, he even scooped up a fumble.

Webb put together a solid senior campaign, which included 61 tackles and five interceptions. He was peaking in his last go-round for the Bucks, as he only secured one pick in his first three seasons.

Against USC in the Cotton Bowl, he may have only notched four tackles into the box score, but he had, arguably, the biggest interception of his career...

2. He picked off Sam Darnold

Ohio State was only up 10-0 on USC in the Cotton Bowl when Webb made the game-changing play.

Sam Darnold throws the ball right to Damon Webb, who returns the pick 24 yards for a TD. Ohio State now leads 17-0! pic.twitter.com/EuLVt3sEle

— The Buckeye Nut (@TheBuckeyeNut) December 30, 2017

Even entering the bowl season, Darnold was seen as one of the top quarterbacks of the class. Sure, the USC QB was an early first-round selection, but he’ll never be able to erase the ‘Damon Webb Pick-6’ from memory.

USC-Ohio State is a big game, no matter when it’s played. A traditional Rose Bowl matchup, these two had to move the showdown to Arlington, Texas, because the ‘Grandaddy of Them All’ was being occupied by the College Football Playoff semifinal.

For Webb to go out there and make a play like that, it adds to the mystique of this Pac-12/Big Ten matchup. Webb’s pick sealed the deal for the Buckeyes, as the Trojans could barely get the ball moving down field after that. The pick helped Webb secure the defensive MVP of the Cotton Bowl—another line on an impressive résumé.

3. Speaking of Awards

Webb ended his season on a high note, but the awards and recognition didn’t stop. He made the All-Bowl team in both USA Today and ESPN. Plus, he earned third-team All-Big Ten honors, which is an improvement from the 2016 season, when he made the all-conference honorable mention list.

The key to a long football career is constant improvement. What a prospect doesn’t want to do is lay an egg in his final season, hurting his team’s hope for a title as well as his personal draft stock. Webb hasn’t done either.

4. Highlight reel worthy plays

We touched on Webb’s ability to pick off the ball. But what we didn’t touch on was the manner in which he pulled off the heists.

Here’s a contest interception he hauled in against UNLV early in the 2017 season.

Your super-early leader for interception of Week 4, courtesy of Damon Webb. pic.twitter.com/B9kknl9TY9

— Big Ten Network (@BigTenNetwork) September 23, 2017

Sometimes, the turnovers he captured involved him being in a wide-open space. Whether or not it was an offensive misread, the end result was still a nearly acquired Ohio State possession. In this pick against Wisconsin in the 2017 Big Ten Championship Game, Webb sealed the deal for the Buckeyes.

Damon Webb interception. Ball game Buckeyes. pic.twitter.com/oC2IW5gX2W

— Jacob Myers (@Jacob_Myers_25) December 3, 2017

If he gets on the field in the NFL, don’t be surprised if he makes a couple highlight-reel plays — he already gained the experience from college.

5. A Bigger Trophy Case?

On top of the Cotton Bowl, Webb has five other trophies from his Buckeye days. They include a Fiesta Bowl (2015), CFP National Championship (2014), Sugar Bowl (2014), and two Big Ten titles (2014 & 2017).

Everyone likes a winner, and Webb has done that both personally, and as part of a team.

Any concerns about Webb?

While it wasn’t too big of a problem at Ohio State, Webb does have the tendency to draw contact in coverage. His NFL Draft profile declared that he “gets grabby in coverage.” In college, the pass interference penalty is only 15 yards; in the NFL, that same penalty is a spot foul. If he has trouble tracking down a receiver, and tugs at the jersey, the team (and Webb) could be looking at a hefty penalty.

Against Oklahoma, Webb committed pass interference that set the Sooners up at the OSU 23. Fortunately, though, OU coughed up the ball on the next play. In some of the bigger games (i.e. Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin and USC), Webb virtually didn’t get called for pass interference.

He didn’t get the call during the seven rounds of the draft, but the Buckeye is still getting a shot in the NFL.

The 2018 NFL Draft is now over, but there are still some Buckeyes looking for roster spots heading into rookie camp. Tracy Sprinkle didn’t have to wait long before signing with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent.

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) April 28, 2018

The fifth-year senior out of Ohio State, was named a team co-captain in 2017 and claimed 12 starts despite a deep rotation of d-line talent. Sprinkle actually earned the most starts of all lineman last year, which is quite a feat considering he was rotating with players like Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis and Sam Hubbard. Sprinkle finished last season with 16 total tackles (three for loss) plus one pass break-up and a quarterback hurry.

His overall career stat-line with Ohio State isn’t all that impressive, but if it weren’t for a knee injury during Week 1 of the 2016 season, his numbers could look a lot different. He earned the starting role that season, but suffered a knee injury in the game against Bowling Green, and ended up missing the rest of the season due to surgery and rehab.

The 6’3, 293-pound lineman came to Ohio State as a 2012 AP first-team All-Ohio selection and DI co-defensive player of the year for his senior season, having recorded 103 total tackles (30 for loss) and 19 sacks — in one season, even if it was high school.

Congrats to Tracy for getting a chance to make a run at an NFL career.
