The Buckeyes makes the cut for a wideout target, while another WR target sets his commitment date.

Just days after earning a commitment from what could be the No. 1 wide receiver in the 2019 recruiting class in five-star Garrett Wilson, the Ohio State Buckeyes continue to anticipate a massive departure at the position following the 2018-19 season. The Buckeyes could realistically lose the majority of their current group of receivers, making the position one of great importance for recruiting.

Luckily, the Buckeyes are off to a terrific start and the team is hoping to watch that streak continue. Early Monday morning, one of Ohio State’s top remaining targets at the position announced his top eight schools—and the Buckeyes made the cut.

Four-star WR TJ Sheffield (Thompson’s Station, TN / Independence) included Notre Dame, Penn State, Louisville, UNC, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Arkansas and Ohio State in his list of schools he will focus on for the remainder of his recruitment.

— Tj Sheffield (@the_tj2) April 30, 2018

Sheffield is ranked by the 247Sports Composite Rankings as the No. 233 overall prospect and is the No. 37 WR in the 2019 recruiting class. He was committed to Tennessee for most of last year before decommitting from the program last October.

The Buckeyes just offered Sheffield a couple of months ago but he has already found time to see what the program has to offer, taking an unofficial visit to Ohio State on March 31.

Though, he also then took an unofficial to Purdue one day later, who also made his cut.

Ohio State WR target sets commitment date

Sticking with the importance of the WR position for Ohio State in this year’s recruiting cycle, Ohio State learned Monday that one of its top WR targets will be naming his college selection later this month.

Just one month after including Ohio State in his top six schools, Ramel Keyton (Marietta, GA / Marietta) will choose between Auburn, Miami, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee and Ohio State on May 17.

I will be announcing my commitment May 17th .

— Holiday ‍♂️ (@Wlmel10) April 30, 2018

Keyton is a four-star prospect and is considered the No. 165 overall prospect in 2019 and is the No. 27 WR according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

While Keyton is likely higher on Ohio State’s big board compared to the aforementioned Sheffield, Keyton has yet to make it to campus. The fact that the Buckeyes are included in his top six schools speaks to the abilities of WR coach Zach Smith.

Keyton is likely going to be heading to Tennessee here in a couple weeks, but if there is one thing going in Ohio State’s favor it is that he is teammates with current Buckeye pledge OT Jake Wray. Look for the Buckeyes to try and get Keyton on campus in the coming weeks but even if they are able to set up a visit, it will be surprising if Keyton goes anywhere other than Tennessee.

That being said, if the Buckeyes do miss out on Keyton, expect them to go all out on Sheffield and their other targets at the position including four-stars John Dunmore, David Bell, Marcus Washington, Zion Puckett, Jameson Williams, Trey Knox, Jalen Curry, Lance Wilhoite, and Elijah Higgins.

Ohio State offers elite 2020 OT

Urban Meyer has never shied away from saying football games are won in the trenches and because of that, the Buckeyes target the best offensive linemen year in and year out in recruiting.

The Buckeyes proved this true as they offered one of the best in the 2020 recruiting cycle in offensive tackle Turner Corcoran (Lawrence, KS / Lawrence Free State.) The 6-foot-6, 285-pound sophomore took to Twitter Monday to announce his Ohio State offer.

Blessed to have earned an offer from THE Ohio State University! #GoBucks @markpantoni @CoachStudOL pic.twitter.com/lZIzbPaU8P

— Turner Corcoran (@turnercorcoran) April 30, 2018

With just two years of high school football under his belt, Corcoran has already shown enough to be considered one of the top prospects in the country. 247Sports has him listed as the No. 93 overall prospect in 2020 and is the No. 15 OT.

Corcoran has built an impressive offer sheet, despite his age, that includes Kansas State, Iowa State, Notre Dame and now Ohio State. Expect that list to only grow in the coming years. He has already taken one unofficial visit to Iowa State and expect the Buckeyes to try and do the same in efforts to secure him.

Future Buckeyes earn invitations to The Opening Finals

The Opening Finals will be held from June 30 through July 3 and will be moving to Dallas this year after previously taking place at the Nike HQ in Beaverton, Oregon. Multiple Ohio State commits and targets have been invited to the finals including multiple from last Sunday’s Dallas Regional which sent a record 17 of the country’s top prospects.

Ohio State’s most recent commit, Garrett Wilson, was one of those to receive an invitation, as well as Buckeye targets five-star safety Daxton Hill, four-star DB’s Jeffery Carter and Erik Young. Both Carter and Young have Ohio State listed among their top schools while Hill has been trending towards the Buckeyes in recent months.

The current list of Ohio State commits and targets who have invitations includes:

  • 5-star wide receiver commit Garrett Wilson
  • 5-star safety target Daxton Hill
  • 5-star defensive end target Nolan Smith
  • 5-star linebacker target Brandon Smith
  • 5-star athlete target Horace McCoy
  • 4-star offensice tackle commit Doug Nester

LGHL Chris Holtmann has a lot of roster to work with next season

Despite losing four players, the second-year coach has veteran talent, transfers and true freshmen to take over this fall.

“Much like it did the first year under Holtmann, the starting lineup will likely be pretty fluid once the season tips off. There are a lot of new pieces to work with in year No. 2, and it will take a few games to see what lineups work best together in game action.”

-James Grega, Eleven Warriors

Chris Holtmann managed to do a lot with a little in his first year as head coach at Ohio State. However, in retrospect, he actually had a lot of talent on a limited roster. Keita Bates-Diop wound up being named Big Ten Player of the Year. Jae’Sean Tate ended his senior year with 1,512 career points. Kam Williams continued to be a threat from range, and Andrew Dakich proved to be an excellent addition as a grad transfer. Holtmann himself earned Coach of the Year honors as he was able to merge this veteran talent with young, unproven players to lead his squad to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Unfortunately for Holtmann, the four aforementioned players will not be on the roster next season. Bates-Diop is foregoing his final year of eligibility and is a likely first-round pick in the NBA Draft in June. The other three have no eligibility remaining. Still, all hope is not lost. Holtmann was very creative with his lineups last season, giving 13 players time on the court which will prove valuable now that much of the veteran leadership is gone. In particular, center Kaleb Wesson ended last season averaging 10.2 points per game and has an opportunity to play an expanded role in 2018-19. Guard C.J. Jackson will be entering his senior season and will likely be the de facto starter at point guard next season. Forwards Kyle Young and Andre Wesson also look to figure into the early starting lineup.

Additionally, Holtmann has made Ohio State an attractive landing spot for transfers, including Wake Forest guard Keyshawn Woods and Florida State guard C.J. Walker, bringing ready-made veteran talent to the young team. The coach has also enhanced the recruiting pipeline in a single season, drawing in four-star recruit Luther Muhammad, who will likely start at shooting guard come the fall.

“With an enviable mix of young talent and experienced players who returned for their final year of eligibility, Ohio State should be in position to produce another big haul in the 2019 NFL Draft.”

-Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

The dust may still be settling on the 2018 NFL Draft, which saw seven former Buckeyes selected, but analysts are already eyeing a number of current Ohio State players who could be taken early on in the 2019 draft.

First, and perhaps most obvious, is defensive end Nick Bosa, who will be entering his third season at Ohio State this fall. A five-star recruit coming out of high school, expectations were through the roof for the younger Bosa before he even stepped onto the field at Ohio State, not the least due to the fact that his brother was selected third-overall in the 2016 draft. However, Bosa delivered and then some, earning Big Ten defensive lineman of the year honors on a unit which featured three draft picks this year. Some analysts are already projecting Bosa as the top pick in 2019.

H-back Parris Campbell, who is coming back to Ohio State for his senior season, also has potential first-round talent, with one mock draft picking him to go 31st-overall. Credited as one of the fastest players on the team, Campbell could be a game changing type of player at the next level. He is also joined by a host of other draft-eligible receivers, including Johnnie Dixon, Austin Mack, Binjimen Victor and K.J. Hill.

Defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones opted to return to Columbus for his redshirt junior season, despite being listed as a possible first-round selection in the 2018 draft. Urban Meyer had high praise for Jones’ spring practice, stating, “The guy probably that has probably had the best spring of anybody on our team this spring is Dre’Mont Jones.”

Finally, and unsurprisingly, Kendall Sheffield could be the next in line of first-round talent at defensive back. Like Bosa, Sheffield came to Columbus as a five-star recruit. The corner continued to improve throughout the 2017 season, and new cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson praised Sheffield’s effort in spring practice in improving his technique.

“I’m telling you here today, 212 days from now, your Michigan Wolverines team will go down to Columbus, march into that stadium and we will beat you know who to bring back that familiar feeling of victory back to the University of Michigan again.”

-Charles Woodson, via Barrett Sallee, CBS Sports

A former Michigan great had some fighting words for his collegiate rivals over the weekend. Heisman Trophy winner and future hall of fame defensive back Charles Woodson spoke at Michigan’s commencement Saturday and pronounced that, come this fall, Michigan will break its six-year losing streak to Ohio State in Columbus. Woodson never mentioned Ohio State by name, but referred to the team as “you know who” in what probably was not actually--but could have been--a veiled reference to Harry Potter’s arch nemesis, Voldemort.

The recent trend of the rivalry has to be painful to Woodson, an Ohio native, who went 3-0 against Ohio State while playing at Michigan from 1995-97. Woodson starred on both offense and defense and was a standout on special teams, returning a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown in 1997 which all but locked up the Heisman. In his speech, Woodson referenced former Heisman winner Desmond Howard, also a native of Ohio, who managed a similar punt return against the Buckeyes in 1991. Woodson wound up being selected fourth-overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 1998 NFL Draft. The all-around player stated that the fact the senior class at Michigan graduated without beating Ohio State “hurts my heart.”

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was at the helm of the Wolverines for the rivals’ three most recent matchups. Meanwhile, in Columbus, Urban Meyer holds a sterling 6-0 record against TTUN. Heading back to the days of Jim Tressel, Ohio State has won 13 of the last 14 matchups, the only loss coming in Luke Fickell’s interim head coaching year. The Buckeyes took the most recent iteration of The Game 31-20 in Ann Arbor, rallying after going down 14 in the first half.

In other recent rivalry history, the spot was good.

Did #16’s height prevent him from getting picked?

We Ohio State fans are a fickle group. For the last four years, a certain segment of Buckeye Nation has wanted anyone other than J.T. Barrett to play quarterback for OSU. However, as other— less accomplished— QBs started hearing their names called in last week’s NFL Draft, with nary a mention of Barrett, nearly all Buckeyes got a bit defensive.

It was especially bad when word came out that Barrett had not even been able to sign a contract as an undrafted free agent, but instead had accepted a mini-camp tryout with the New Orleans Saints; yet another slap in the face for the most productive QB in Big Ten history.

Those that have watched Barrett play over the last four years are well aware of all of his insane accomplishments, as well as what he does and doesn’t do well. So, I don’t think that any level-headed OSU observer is going to complain about Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, or Lamar Jackson going in the first round and Barrett not. I think it’s even safe to acknowledge that Mason Rudolph going in the third round ahead of Barrett probably makes sense.

However, from the fourth round on, that’s where things get a little wonky. With the 108th pick, the New York Giants selected Richmond quarterback Kyle Lauletta. Over his four years at the FCS school, Lauletta accumulated 10,651 total yards, 85 total touchdowns, and threw 35 interceptions. Against obviously better competition, Barrett went for 12,697 yards, 147 TDS, and threw 30 INTs.

Now, you might be saying that Barrett is something of a dual-threat, while Lauletta is a more traditional pro-style quarterback. So, even if you subtract the OSU QB’s rushing stats, he still threw for 9,434 yards compared to Lauletta’s 10,465; and had 31 more passing touchdown, sitting the second halves of many games with the contest already in hand.

Now some old-school evaluators will tell you that Barrett at 6-foot-1 isn’t tall enough to play QB in the NFL given his specific skill set. So, if you give Lauletta the nod with his two-inch height advantage (despite similar concerns about arm strength), there were still six other QBs selected after Lauletta.

All of those QBs’ stats and honors pale in comparison to Barrett’s, unsurprisingly, but the selection that really jumps out as being almost offensive is that of Tanner Lee, who was taken with the 203rd pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The former Nebraska— by way of Tulane— quarterback threw for 6,744 yards in three seasons, and had 46 touchdowns to 37 career interceptions.

So Lee threw an interception for every 1.24 TDs, while Barrett was at a 3.47 ratio. Also, Lee’s career completion percentage was 55.2 percent, while Barrett’s was 63.5. And of course, that doesn’t even account for the fact that Lee had a total of -384 rushing yards in his collegiate career, compared to Barrett’s 3,263.

Barrett had a better 40-time at the combine (4.7 vs. 4.93), and other than their broad jumps, all of their other workout results were comparable. So while Lee does have better arm strength than Barrett, the only other advantage that Lee has is that he is 6-foot-4; everything else leans Barrett’s way.

Buckeye fans saw Lee up close last fall, and he did put up a solid 303 yards, but losing 56-14, he was chucking it around all game, and ended the contest with a moribund 47.4 QBR.

Now, in fairness, Lee is not the worst in the baker’s dozen of quarterbacks selected (no pun intended), but the fact that he ended his career in the Big Ten with fairly pedestrian stats, and still got the call when the B1G’s reigning and three-time QB of the Year is having to fight for a mini-camp tryout is frustrating.

Now, I’m not even particularly saying that Barrett deserved to be drafted; I am far from a #16 apologist. However, when we see what quarterbacks were taken from the fourth round on, and see the type of numbers that they put up—many against inferior competition— you have to wonder what the disconnect is.

I don’t think that Barrett will ever be a full-time starter in the NFL, but there’s no doubt that the way that the position is played in the league is changing. So, when you realize that the last seven QBs taken were all taller than Barrett by an average of 2.3 inches, I don’t think it is inappropriate to wonder if his height was the deciding factor in him not getting selected, despite shorter signal callers having success in recent years.

Barrett clearly had a better resume than everyone not taken in the first round, and many of the guys that went late had just as many skill and technique red flags as Barrett did. So did his less than statuesque stature make a difference?

Or, was it the fact that the NFL execs had a bit too much information on the legendary Ohio State quarterback? Had Barrett been in the spotlight for so long that the mystery had worn off? Was there no more “up side” for a guy that scouts had seen play in major games for four years?

I don’t know the answer, perhaps he legitimately isn’t as good as Western Kentucky’s Mike White, or FIU’s Alex McGough, or Toledo’s Logan Woodside, but it just seems surprising to me that someone who had such a great college career can’t even get a shot when guys who had not nearly as great of college careers can.

The four-year starter holds every conceivable passing record at Ohio State. He’ll be an asset to his new squad.

It has finally happened: J.T. Barrett has NFL interest from not one, but two teams. The three-time Ohio State captain will join the Indianapolis Colts AND the New Orleans Saints for a minicamp tryout.

So, why should you be excited about Barrett? We’ve got you covered:

1. He’s not really a rookie

Okay that might be a stretch, but Barrett is one of the most experienced players in this year’s draft class, and his maturity, at least, will certainly not be a question heading into camp.

Barrett started for Ohio State as a redshirt freshman through his senior season, only sitting out for a few games during the stretch. While his opening performances against Navy and Virginia Tech weren’t great, he certainly didn’t look like a freshman by the time the Buckeyes faced Michigan in November of 2014, already having broken a Big Ten record with 45 touchdowns in his premiere season. However, Barrett’s impact went beyond his time on the field in Columbus.

Former Ohio State tight end Nick Vannett described Barrett as a “true field general.” A born leader, Barrett is the only three-time captain in Ohio State history, serving in the role even during the few games that Cardale Jones started over him in 2015. Perhaps it’s the fact that both of Barrett’s parents, Stacy and Joe, served in the Army, but Barrett’s leadership skills are perhaps his most valuable asset.

2. Pressure means nothing

Some players panic when their teams start to struggle. That’s not Barrett. In fact, he seems to get better as the going gets tough, which is crucial for players transitioning to the highest level of competition in football.

For proof, look to his performances against Penn State in 2014 and 2017--two very different games which both exhibit the kind of resilience that made Barrett a great college quarterback.

In 2014, the Buckeyes blew a 17-0 lead to James Franklin’s Nittany Lions, starting with a pick-six thrown by Barrett himself. But Barrett stayed calm, scoring two touchdowns in two overtime periods to secure the victory for Ohio State.

The 2017 story was more heroic, as Barrett pulled his team out of a deficit which stretched as large as 18 points. The senior went 33-of-39 for 328 passing yards and four touchdowns. His fourth quarter was perfect, capping the comeback for the Buckeyes as he completed 13-of-13 passing attempts, including three touchdowns.

JT Barrett had ice in his veins tonight! #JT4Heisman pic.twitter.com/AULX4BMs2k

— Buckeye Videos+ (@BuckeyeVideos) October 28, 2017

The matchup of top-five teams and the daunting task of coming back from a deficit did not faze the senior. Urban Meyer said of Barrett’s performance “I’ve never had a kid play perfect, but damn he was close tonight.”

3. What doesn’t kill him makes him stronger

In what would seemingly be a huge point against him, Barrett has actually been injured a lot--from an ACL tear to a broken ankle to a meniscus issue exacerbated by a rogue cameraman. However, Barrett has managed to come back stronger than ever after each injury, no matter how serious. Despite tearing his ACL and meniscus as a senior in high school, Barrett ended up enrolling early at Ohio State and studied under Braxton Miller before taking over the starting role in August 2014.

The broken ankle against Michigan in 2014 proved more cost-worthy for Barrett personally, as it eventually led to Cardale Jones taking the Buckeyes through the post-season to a College Football Playoff title and winning the starting spot the following fall. Still, Barrett’s mobility didn’t seem to be affected once he did return to the field. He still rushed for 11 touchdowns in 2015, equaling his total from 2014, and averaged 5.9 yards per rushing attempt--the best average of his four seasons. Then there was the meniscus. In short, Barrett had surgery and was back on the field a week later to face Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship game. “Machine” is a word you might insert here.

4. He is versatile

Coming out of high school, Barrett was considered the No. 2 dual threat quarterback recruit in the nation. He continued to show that ability in four seasons with the Buckeyes. As a result, he is first in program history in both career passing yards (9,434) and touchdowns (104), fourth in career rushing touchdowns (43) and seventh in career rushing yards (3,263).

JT Barrett making magic happen! #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/exVW9Arg1c

— Buckeye Videos+ (@BuckeyeVideos) October 7, 2017

While this sort of versatility generally gets stomped out pretty quickly in the NFL, where high-caliber defenses snuff out even better-than-mediocre scramblers, some quarterbacks have been able to continue to rely on their rushing game. Russell Wilson looks like an easy comparison, but Barrett looks in many ways like Alex Smith--who also happened to be coached by Urban Meyer at Utah. Smith is similar in his scrambling ability (both Smith and Barrett actually ran 4.7-second 40s), and scouts had analogous concerns about Smith playing in the spread throughout college.

If Barrett can continue to evade defenders at the NFL level, he could prove to be the next in line of a rare breed of true dual threat NFL quarterbacks.

5. Despite the haters, he still gets the job done

Meyer owns the best winning percentage of any Ohio State coach in program history, sitting at 73-8 overall. In four of his six seasons, he has had Barrett at the helm of his offense for most of the year. Throughout those years, the Buckeyes went 44-6 in games where Barrett played.

Yes, the quarterback had the advantage of a ridiculous amount of NFL-level talent surrounding him on offense (e.g., Ezekiel Elliott and the entire set of offensive lines for several years) and a defense which, at a minimum, kept Ohio State in most games. However, there is something to be said for a player who simply knows how to win and who can make the players around him better. It’s sometimes ugly, but when Barrett takes the field, his team more often than not comes out on top.

Any concerns about Barrett?

Realistically? Plenty. Barrett is not a pro-style quarterback in a league which still favors that type of player. Having played primarily in the spread, he hasn’t been forced to rely on downfield passing options, and has struggled when put in that type of situation (i.e. all of 2017 under Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day). Accuracy, especially on the long ball, has been a consistent problem throughout his time in Columbus.

He has been critiqued for his fundamentals, and his arm strength is questionable. He is also small for the NFL, standing at 6-foot-1, 224 pounds, which could hamper his ability to rush in an NFL loaded with bigger and stronger defensive players.

The No. 3-ranked Buckeyes are heading into the NCAA Tournament on a roll!

On Sunday, for the third straight season—and the 13th time in program history— the No. 3 Ohio State men’s tennis team won the Big Ten Tournament. In the finals against No. 8 Illinois, the Buckeyes quickly found themselves trailing after losing the first doubles set. However, OSU picked up breaks on courts 1 and 2 to earn the doubles point before singles play began. From there, it was fairly smooth sailing, as the Buckeyes swept the first three singles matches, and were ahead in the other three that were left unfinished.

Buckeyes No. 95 Kyle Seelig, No. 110 Martin Joyce, and Hunter Tubert were all ahead when Illinois was mathematically eliminated.

With their 13th-straight regular season championship to go along with their third-consecutive tournament title, the Buckeyes will now set their sights on the NCAA Tournament. The selection show takes place on Tuesday, May 1 at 6 p.m. EDT.

The NCAA men’s and women’s team finals will come from Winston Salem, N.C., on May 22. Last season, OSU was eliminated in the semifinals, but no doubt the Buckeyes have their sights set on celebrating like this at Wake Forest next month.

The Buckeyes picked up verbal pledges from three class of 2019 standouts.

Remember when people were saying the Ohio State Buckeyes were off to a rather slow start to their 2019 recruiting class? Yeah, those days are long gone.

Coming into the weekend with six verbal pledges, the Buckeyes are now sitting at nine, thanks to the commitments of three top prospects the soon-to-be senior class has to offer.

Want to know more on the newest future Buckeyes? Land-Grant Holy Land has you covered.

Buckeyes have epic weekend

Skyrocketing up the 2019 recruiting class rankings, Ohio State’s once rated 15th class in the country is now getting closer to a top five spot after landing pledges from three highly sought after prospects over the weekend.

Leapfrogging programs such as Michigan, Miami, and Ole Miss, OSU now has—what is considered to be—the seventh best class for 2019.

Starting with the flip of one time Wisconsin safety commit Bryson Shaw on Saturday, the Buckeyes ended the weekend off with linebacker Cade Stover, and wide receiver Garrett Wilson deciding to jump aboard the Buckeyes recruiting train as well on Sunday night.

3-star S Bryson Shaw

Class: 2019

Town: Potomac,MD/The Bullis School

Size: 6’2/175

Other Offers: Wisconsin, Tennessee, West Virginia, Rutgers, Wake Forest, etc

Scouting Report: “Shaw is a 6-foot-2, 175-pound safety, considered to be the No. 53 player at his position and No. 660 prospect overall in the 247Sports composite rankings. A tall, long defensive back prospect, Shaw is also an elite lacrosse player who can run all day. Shaw isn’t known for his acceleration, but his endurance and long speed are top-flight, meaning he can pull away from players in the open field as a return man or track them down if a play busts as a safety.

Shaw needs to add 15 to 20 pounds before he’s ready to compete on a college football field. He has a slight frame and will need to work hard in the weight room to be prepared for the rigors of the game at the next level. He usually takes the correct pursuit angles, but the muscle mass and striking ability are not there for him to be a plus-tackler in run support. He will need to work on that over the next several months before he arrives at Ohio State.” -Ryan Donnelly, Land-of-10

Please respect my decision. My recruitment is now closed. Go Buckeyes! pic.twitter.com/QBY5f2p9Jh

— Bryson shaw (@bshaw272727) April 28, 2018
4-star OLB Cade Stover

Class: 2019

Town: Lexington,OH/Lexington

Size: 6’4/225

Others Offers: Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Michigan, Penn State, etc

Scouting Report: “Cade Stover is the definition of a Greg Schiano linebacker. He’s a long, 6-foot-4, 225 pounder, with a ton of speed (4.65 40 time) and a serious disdain for the ball carrier. He’s a violent hitter that finds his way into the backfield with ease. He’s a natural pass rusher, and an absolute handful for offensive linemen

He excels at shredding blocks, and knows how to use his hands effectively to get clear shots at the running back, quarterback, or anyone else unfortunate enough to have the ball near him. He plays safety, linebacker, defensive end and quarterback for his high school team, and is capable of playing in coverage, though I expect he’ll likely end up at outside linebacker or defensive end for Ohio State.” - Patrick Mayhorn, Land-Grant Holy Land

5-star WR Garrett Wilson

Class: 2019

Town: Austin,TX/Lake Travis

Size: 6’0/185

Other Offers: Texas, Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, etc

Scouting Report: “The 6-foot tall, 185 pound wideout isn’t a finished product by any means, but in terms of high school receivers, he’s as fluid and natural as they come. Wilson is an explosive and smooth route runner, that consistently sets up and blows past defenders like a pro. Defending him with press coverage is a mistake, because he has incredible speed and knows how to use his hands at the point of contact.

His route tree isn’t super advanced, but it’s nothing worth worrying about. When it comes to running routes and creating separation, he’s Big Ten ready already. His hands are a similar story. Wilson is a hand catcher, which is exactly what coaches love to see. He attacks the ball, both on the run and in the air, on slant, jump balls, and everything in between.” - Patrick Mayhorn, Land-Grant Holy Land

The highest ranked wide receiver to commit to Ohio State in the modern era could be an immediate starter.

The Ohio State Buckeyes just landed their highest-rated wide receiver. Ever. Not just in 2019, not just under Urban Meyer, no, Garrett Wilson is the highest-ranked high school receiver to ever commit to Ohio State, at least since the beginning of recruiting rankings sites in the early 2000s. Even that stat doesn’t do justice to how big this get is for Ohio State.

The Lake Travis, Texas product and former teammate of Buckeye quarterback Matthew Baldwin is a consensus five-star product, and easily the highest ranked-recruit in Ohio State’s class to this point. Let’s take a look at what all the hype is about.

On the field

The 6-foot tall, 185-pound wideout isn’t a finished product by any means, but in terms of high school receivers, he’s as fluid and natural as they come.

When it comes to running routes and creating separation, he’s Big Ten ready now. His hands are a similar story. Wilson is a hand catcher, which is exactly what coaches love to see. He attacks the ball, both on the run and in the air, on slants, jump balls, and everything in between.

He’s deceptively strong for how small he is, and will only get better at jump balls and contested catches after a couple years in Mickey Mariotti’s dojo. The only real knocks on Wilson are his lack of size and his lacking route tree, but he more than makes up for it with athleticism and body control, specifically in the red zone.

Wilson will never be a jump ball, go-up-and-get-it kind of receiver, but he’s a true number one receiver, that can abuse defenses with his strong hands and fluidity. The game is already starting to slow down for him at 17 years old, and his ceiling is future top-five receiver in all of football. He’s a stud.

In the class

Wilson is the ninth commitment in Ohio State’s 2019 class, and either the first or second receiver, depending on where Ronnie Hickman ends up (my guess is at safety, for the record). He’s the third commitment in two days, as Bryson Shaw surprised everyone and flipped from Wisconsin on Saturday night, and Cade Stover finally ended his recruitment just hours ago.

Wilson is the top recruit in Ohio State’s class, jumping Doug Nester at the top. He’s ranked 29th nationally and fifth among receivers according to the 247Sports composite, and even higher in their in-house rankings, at eighth nationally and second positionally. Current Buckeye freshman quarterback Matthew Baldwin was ecstatic with the news of Wilson’s commitment, as he gets to throw the ball to a former high school teammate.

Yesss! Can’t wait to play with my guy again! #12to5 https://t.co/zHTWpdkGNO

— Matthew Baldwin (@matthewb_12) April 30, 2018

Personally, I think he’s the best receiver in the country, and will prove that this summer and in his senior season. His commitment launches Ohio State’s class from 10th up to seventh, and makes them the third-highest ranked class with nine or fewer commits, behind Georgia and Alabama.

Wilson may be a Texas recruit now, but he’s an Ohio native, and that connection, as well as his relationship with Urban Meyer, Ryan Day, Zach Smith, Kevin Wilson and Matthew Baldwin lead me to think that Buckeye fans should have no concerns about a possible flip. Wilson is a solid commit, and a massive get for this class.

The Dublin native turned Texas resident will play his college ball in Columbus.

Already locking in pledges from safety Bryson Shaw and linebacker Cade Stover, Ohio State’s epic weekend on the recruiting trail has now gotten even better.

After what some around the scene called a slow start, Ohio State’s 2019 recruiting class is currently sitting at nine verbal pledges thanks to the commitment of five-star wide receiver Garrett Wilson on Sunday night.

I sacrificed time, fun, and relationships to be in this position. Recruiting is a grueling process, but god showed me the way. I got unfinished business in the 614... I’m coming home. #TTWFO pic.twitter.com/W9xRyot1Bs

— Garrett Wilson (@GarrettWilson_V) April 30, 2018

Fresh off of official visits to Ohio State and the University Texas, Wilson, who grew up in Central Ohio before moving to the Austin, Texas-area, chose to come back to his roots and suit up in the Scarlet and Gray over the opportunity to play for former OSU assistant coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns.

Considered the fifth-best wide receiver, and 29th overall prospect, in the entire class of 2019, according to the latest 247Sports Composite Rankings, the 6-foot, 185-pound standout will add another scoring threat to the Buckeyes’ offense when he arrives in Columbus.

A Lake Travis High School teammate of current Ohio State true-freshman quarterback Matthew Baldwin, Garrett, and Matthew hooked up time and time again to help their squad make a deep run in the Texas state playoffs.

Hauling in nearly 100 receptions, the junior accounted for over 1,700 yards and 26 touchdowns through the air for the Cavaliers, who finished the year at 13-3.

Just like every other year since he’s arrived in Columbus, Urban Meyer and OSU are well on their way to another star-studded recruiting class. Previously pegged as the 10th recruiting class in the country, Wilson’s pledge now pushes the Buckeyes to the seventh spot.

Want to know more about Garrett Wilson and his commitment to the Ohio State Buckeyes? Land-Grant Holy Land will have much more on his pledge coming soon.
