The Big Ten Player of the Year will have the chance to prove his NBA worth later this month.

The reigning Big Ten Player of the Year, Ohio State’s Keita Bates-Diop, will be one of the 69 nice players participating in the NBA Combine later this month, according to Yahoo’s Shams Charania. The combine will emanate from Chicago May 16-20.

Along with Bates-Diop, some of the major names participating in this year’s pre-draft workouts will be Oklahoma’s Trae Young, Duke’s Marvin Bagley III, Texas’ Mohamed Bamba, Missouri’s Michael Porter Jr., and more.

SBNation’s Ricky O’Donnell currently has KBD slotted in as the 19th selection in June’s draft, going to the Atlanta Hawks in his last mock draft released earlier this week. The 6-foot-7 forward is coming off of a year where he surprisingly led the Buckeyes to a second-place B1G regular-season finish and an NCAA Tournament berth for the first time since 2015.

Bates-Diop averaged 19.8 points and 8.7 rebounds in his third full season on the floor for the Buckeyes en route to being named to the All-American second-team.

The NBA Draft lottery will take place on May 15— the day before the combine begins— and the draft itself will happen on June 21.

Plus, the Buckeye men’s volleyball team was knocked out of the NCAA tournament.

“The fact that Urban Meyer and offensive line coach Greg Studrawa trust Munford to hold down a starting spot is incredible given how far he has had to come physically.”

-Ryan Donnelly, Land of 10

As is the case most years, Ohio State football has lost a good number of offensive line talent — either by way of the NFL Draft or graduation — but the “Next Man Up” philosophy continues to be the position group’s mantra. One of the storylines to come out of spring practice this year, was the rise of Thayer Munford.

Munford has done enough this offseason for coaches to consider him an early starter for the 2018 season, which will be a big responsibility for the tackle out of the 2017 recruiting class. As Donnelly notes in his fantastic profile of Munford, the Massillion product was one of the lowest-ranked members of that year’s impressive group of incoming freshman, but that hasn’t kept him from making up for that now that he’s in Columbus.

It’s fascinating that someone was able to overcome obstacle-after-obstacle and still find a way to succeed. Munford struggled with academics and his weight throughout his high school career, but he finally dedicated himself to changing that starting in his junior year, and the turnaround was pretty quick— although having an Urban Meyer mentee around you certainly helps too.

“I’ve got to give a lot of credit to our offensive line coach, John Mazur. We are truly blessed to have him on staff,” Moore said. “I think John’s connection really helped in [Munford’s] recruitment because John played at Bowling Green for Urban Meyer and Coach Stud. He was actually a captain for Coach Meyer. All the drills we do — how Mazur teaches inside zone, how he teaches our gap scheme — that’s the same way that Stud teaches them.

Munford has continued his commitment to a healthier lifestyle— on and off the field— in Columbus, and it’s no doubt helped propel him up the depth chart. There’s still plenty of competition left before Week 1 gets underway this fall, but Munford is definitely a guy you want to, and should, root for.

“I’m very proud of what they’ve accomplished, how they handled themselves, how they competed in this tournament and I think the future is very bright for Ohio State Volleyball. I’m really proud of those young men.”

-Ohio State men’s volleyball coach Pete Hanson, via Ohio State Athletics

Things were going well for the Buckeyes as they won their quarterfinal matchup against UC-Irvine in the NCAA tournament earlier in the week. Unfortunately, that would be as far as the2017 national champion men’s volleyball team would make it, after falling on Thursday night to the Long Beach State 49ers in the semifinals.

Ohio State finishes the 2018 season with an overall 25-6 record, reaching their third straight NCAA semifinals. The single-elimination nature of these rounds left little room for error for the Buckeyes, who ended up losing to the top-seeded 49ers in four sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-27, 32-30).

The All-American duo, Maxime Hervoir and Nicolas Szerszen, combined on the day for 33 kills, double-digit digs, and 18.5 points each. Jake Hanes was slightly less active on the ball, but carried a larger point-scoring load, claiming a match-high 21 kills and four aces.

It wasn’t how the team wanted the season to end, but after a three-year run of 89-10— plus the four-year record of 111-19 with Szerszen on the roster— the Buckeyes still have a lot to hang their hats on for what they’ve done to help propel the Ohio State men’s volleyball program to the top of the national hierarchy.

“Riding a seven-game win streak, Ohio State is set to battle rival No. 14 Michigan in Ann Arbor to wrap up the regular season this weekend.”

-Ohio State Athletics

History is not on the side of the softball Buckeyes, but hopefully their recent momentum can help lead them to a winning-series over rival Michigan. The Wolverines lead the all-time series 93-21, which is quite a ways from even being in the “not good” category. The tide started changing last season, when Ohio State hosted the series and finished with a 5-0 shutout win to end the season, but they’ve got another big hill to climb in 2018.

Michigan enters the weekend 41-9 overall, and No. 1 in the Big Ten with a 16-2 record against conference opponents. They did hit a bit of a snag earlier in the week when they suffered their first home loss of the season against in-state foe Western Michigan — but bounced back quickly with an 8-0 win over Michigan State.

The Buckeyes have spent the better part of the season fluctuating from ranked to not, and currently sit around No. 30 in the country. Ohio State is 33-11 so far this season, and ranks No. 4 in the Big Ten with a 13-6 conference record. The team is also 8-4 against Top 50 teams and claims 17 wins against Top 100 teams.

“The Ohio State baseball team travels to Illinois for an important three-game Big Ten series Friday-Sunday at Illinois Field.”

-Ohio State Athletics

Heading into this weekend’s series against the Fighting Illini, the Buckeyes sit at 28-14 on the season (9-6 in Big Ten play) and rank sixth in the conference— just one spot below Illinois, whose riding high with a 26-14 record (10-5 B1G).

There’s only three weeks left in the regular season and every series counts with so little time left to climb up the ranks. Ohio State sits at No. 47 in the RPI, with Illinois ranked No. 44. This marks the third week in a row that the Buckeyes will face a top-five conference opponent— previously upsetting Indiana and No. 21 Minnesota.

Beating some top-teir talent in conference is impressive, but so is being amongst them. As a team, the Buckeyes are among the top-five in several Big Ten offensive categories including No. 1 in RBI (263), No. 2 in runs scored (291), batting (.292), and hits (428), No. 3 in on-base percentage (.388), and fourth in slugging percent (.423).

Individually though, Noah McGowan is tied atop the Big Ten doubles (17) and RBI (49) standings, and is among the top-10 in six (!) other categories. Similarly, Dominic Canzone ranks No. 3 in the conference in runs scored (41) and hits (61).

According to Baseball America, OSU has had the fourth-best turnaround of the year, coming off of a 2017 season where the team finished 22-34. Head coach Greg Beals is also just four wins away from hitting the 500-win mark for his career, and could very easily hit that milestone before the end of the regular season.

LGHL New Orleans is the best possible landing spot for J.T. Barrett

New Orleans is the best possible landing spot for J.T. Barrett

Of all the franchises in the NFL, the Saints give the former Buckeye signal caller the best chance to succeed.

It was a topic on Day 3 of the NFL Draft: Who will end up taking former Ohio State star quarterback J.T. Barrett? The forecasts pointed to a sixth or seventh round selection for Barrett. But, the forecasts were wrong; Barrett didn’t hear his name called inside AT&T Stadium at all; coincidently, the place where he won his last college football game.

But, the former three-time OSU captain did get minicamp offers as an undrafted free agent. When the Indianapolis Colts (and then New Orleans Saints) came knocking, it appeared that the Big Ten quarterback would be vying for a spot in a Big Ten town. Our own Matt Tamanini wrote up a piece on how 13 other QBs heard their named called—with some of them being highly questionable picks—over J.T., and how he deserved better than what he got.

The draft concluded on Saturday, but by midday-Tuesday, it appeared that the universe was trying to correct itself over how the likes of Tanner Lee and Danny Etling got picked over Barrett. Not only did the Saints sign Barrett, but it was to a 3-year deal.

Not a minicamp tryout, as had been previously announced, but an actual multi-year deal.

That’s more of what Barrett deserved after a Buckeye career that saw twists and turns, and a revolving door of who was coaching him at the QB position. Even through all of that, he still managed to break school record after school record—and even toppled Drew Brees’ Big Ten career passing touchdown mark.

Both Brees and Barrett sit at the top of a slew of categories. Barrett’s 104 passing TDs is more than Brees’ 90. However, Brees’ still holds the single-season passing TD mark with 39. Right behind him, though, is Barrett and his 35 TDs from the 2017 season. In recent memory, these two have had some of the most electric seasons in college football. Now, they’ll be teammates.

Out of all the places Barrett could’ve wound up, New Orleans is the best possible place.

Watching a Legend

Brees is the starting QB for the Saints. However, at age 39, how many more years does he have left in the tank? The Saints may be on the lookout for the heir apparent. Signing Barrett for three years shows that the team is willing to give him a chance—and to see how much improvement he can make.

The depth chart for the Bayou football team includes Brees, Barrett, Tom Savage and Taysom Hill. Since he was a free agent pickup, it’s safe to assume that J.T. will begin in the No. 4 slot on the depth chart. However, if he excels in training camp, and practices well, then you have to believe that he’ll at least be able to make the move up to No. 3. Four quarterbacks is too many, so someone—at some point—will be leaving New Orleans.

Staying in the QB room is key for J.T., and it seems very doable with the way the cards have been dealt. Brees is a Super Bowl winner, has valuable experience and tidbits of knowledge that will ultimately make Barrett better.

Quarterbacks that get time to understand the systems they are in, tend to—surprise, surprise—do better. Tony Romo was an undrafted free agent, and was sitting behind Drew Bledsoe on the depth chart in Dallas. After Bledsoe got hurt, Romo was thrust into the starting role, and eventually won it outright. Granted, Romo is an outlier: a free agency pickup that actually becomes a starter. But it does happen. Jeff Garcia and Kurt Warner, who won a Super Bowl as the signal caller for the “Greatest Show on Turf,” were also of the undrafted-free agent variety.

Buckeye Talent Around Him

Life is always easier when you have friends around you. One of the big benefits to becoming a member of the Saints is that Barrett isn’t the only Buckeye on the team. Marshon Lattimore, last season’s Defensive Rookie of the Tear, is on the team, as is Michael Thomas. But those aren’t the only former members of the Scarlet and Gray who’ve found their way to New Orleans. Vonn Bell was also part of that mystical 2016 draft class, and Ted Ginn Jr., a 2007 first-round selection by Carolina, just finished his first season with the Saints.

Barrett and Thomas are more than familiar, as Barrett threw him footballs just three seasons ago wearing the Scarlet and Gray. In his final year with the Buckeyes, Thomas hauled in a team-leading 56 reception, 781 yards and nine TDs. One of his breakout games that season was against Rutgers, where Thomas caught five pass for 103 yards and a score—courtesy of Barrett being under center for that game. (Remember, there was a QB controversy between Cardale Jones and Barrett for the first half of the 2015 season.)

During that same season, Barrett made this throw to Thomas—leading to an even more spectacular catch from the wideout.

But that wasn’t the only year where the Barrett-to-Thomas connection occurred. The national title run of 2014 featured Thomas as one of the go-to targets in the air. While Devin Smith led the team in receiving yards and TDs, Thomas had the most receptions (54) among the receiving corps. Then just a redshirt sophomore, Thomas had breakout games against Virginia Tech (six catches, 98 yards and a TD) and Michigan State (six catches, 91 yards and a TD) with Barrett as the signal caller.

Who knows, maybe Brees may learn something about the top wideout for the Saints with Barrett in the fold?

Avoiding the stranger in a strange land scenario bodes well for Barrett. Now, he has to go out and prove that the richness of the Buckeye pipeline didn’t skip over him, but it certainly won’t hurt to have familiar faces around.

The best outcome

For Barrett, the best outcome of being in this best possible landing spot is, at some point, becoming the No. 1 signal-caller for the Saints. For the Saints, the best possible outcome is the same—and they find their next quarterback after Brees.

This won’t be an overnight process. J.T. will have to work on his mechanics and his ability to throw the ball deep. Also, the run-first mentality (and QB option) will have to be shed, as that’s not really a viable strategy with the way New Orleans operates. The Saints are a pass-happy team, evident by Brees throwing for over 4,000 yards last season. When you have guys like Thomas and Ginn Jr. as receiving options, one could have a field day throwing the ball.

On the ground, a tandem of Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram removes the need for the QB to be used as a runner. Kamara ran for over 700 yards and eight TDs in the 2017 campaign, while Ingram led the squad on the ground with 1,124 yards and 12 scores.

Three years is a nice chunk of time to adapt to the big leagues. In college, Barrett had Tom Herman, Tim Beck and Ryan Day as his quarterback coaches during his four years as a full or part-time starter. The consistent change almost certainly hampered his ability to evolve at the position. Barrett was instrumental in getting the Buckeyes to the doorstep of the 2014 national championship—leaving Cardale Jones to open up the door with wins against Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon to secure the title for the Bucks.

After the title run, Barrett split the job with Jones in 2015; and in 2016, his numbers in the air weren’t nearly as good as his freshman season of ‘14. However, he eclipsed his personal-best in 2017 with a 3,000-yard season.

New Orleans should have a more consistent coaching staff over the three years of Barrett’s contract (assuming he doesn’t get cut), meaning that he won’t have to relearn and recalibrate based on a new quarterbacking philosophy. Joe Lombardi will be his QB coach—and his track record is impressive. Lombardi helped Brees’ set passing records in his first stint with the club (2007-2013), and was the QB coach in the Saints’ Super Bowl XLIV win.

Learning to throw the ball at an NFL level is what Barrett needs to do if he wants to be successful. Having someone like Lombardi around is exactly what he needs.

One of the more popular graphic novels in the Batman canon is “The Long Halloween.” The opening line of dialogue has Bruce Wayne saying, “I believe in Gotham City.” We’ve watched J.T. Barrett, the college QB, and now we’ll see him attempt to battle up the ladder to become a QB in the NFL.

Wayne believed in Gotham City; I’m believing in J.T. Barrett—and his ability to make it in the pros.

Confidential accusations have come in from former athletes in eight sports.

On April 5, The Ohio State University announced that it had hired an outside investigator to conduct an independent inquiry into accusations of sexual misconduct against a former university and athletic department doctor.

Allegations against Richard Strauss, who died in 2005, have been reported to the university ranging in time “from the mid-1970s to the 1990s” and reportedly involve athletes from the cheerleading, fencing, football, gymnastics, hockey, swimming, volleyball, and wrestling programs. In addition to treating student-athletes, Strauss also worked at the university medical center and student health center.

In a statement sent yesterday to university students and employees, OSU president Michael Drake said, “These allegations are disturbing to us all. A safe and healthy climate for students, faculty, staff and visitors is always our top priority.”

Drake also provided an update on the investigation, and encouraged anyone with information on the situation to contact the investigating law firm, Perkins Coie.

In the accompanying update, the university says that the Columbus Division of Police and the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office have been kept informed for any potential criminal investigation. Also, the Ohio Attorney General’s office has provided resources from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

According to the Associated Press, Strauss was an associate professor of medicine at Ohio State, and worked for the Olympics in 1984. He also reportedly studied injury rates of wrestlers and the effects of steroids on athletes, amongst other things.

Are the Buckeyes hoping to flip an already committed QB in 2019?

Ohio State players are either finishing up their classes or are already at home for a much deserved break. While being a part of the Ohio State football program rarely offers a break to players, that rare break from the grind hasn’t been given to the coaching staff. This gang of relentless recruiters is still on the trail at top speed looking all over the country to bring in the next Buckeye great. While the 2019 class is certainly coming together as of late, Meyer and his staff of coaches know that the only momentum they have comes when they continue this pursuit. Until fall camp hits, you can guarantee the Buckeye recruiting efforts will be atop of the priorities list and more “Booms” will soon follow.

Change in plans?

Ohio State hosted Texas native quarterback Grant Gunnell last weekend for his official visit to see what the Buckeyes had to offer. While a commitment pledge could have come from the visit, no official word was given after the visit as Gunnell is still on the market. While Ohio State certainly looks to have the upper hand in the Gunnell sweepstakes, there’s still other threats out there against the Buckeyes that have to be respected. It is true and maybe telling as to why Ohio State leads in even the 247sports crystal ball predictions, but again, until a final decision has been made, the staff has to do what they have to do in order to find a signal caller and leader of their 2019 class.

Enter Dwan Mathis, a 2019 QB prospect of Oak Park, Michigan, and you have the latest quarterback in the 2019 class to hear from the Buckeyes. Yesterday, via Dwan’s Twitter account, he made it public that Ohio State had extended a scholarship offer in his favor. More in depth, news came to the surface that QB coach Ryan Day was even at Oak Park High School yesterday outside of Detroit to check in on Dwan. The kicker: Mathis is currently committed to the hometown Michigan State Spartans. Obviously no love lost between the Buckeyes and Sparty, the Buckeye offer to Mathis will certainly prove its weight in the near future.

Blessed to receive an offer from The Ohio State University ⭕pic.twitter.com/ynnlEvslsy

— WANNYLIVE5 (@DwanMathis) May 3, 2018

Graded out as the eleventh best pro-style quarterback in the class, Mathis is truly a prospect to watch. A lengthy signal caller to say the least, Mathis measures in at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds and can run a bit here and there when he’s not slinging the rock all over the field.

As mentioned earlier, Gunnell has been thought to be the QB of Ohio State’s class, but this offer to an already committed prospect certainly has the minds stirring. It could mean a number of things including the fact that the Buckeyes know Mathis is a very good football player and want to be considered before pen hits paper. On the other hand, this could be looked at as a potential backup plan if Ohio State doesn’t in fact end up with Grant Gunnell. It could even be a ploy to try and put the pressure on Gunnell to commit to Ohio State sooner than later, but if one thing is for sure, trusting the coaching staff is what’s needed here. They know what they’re doing and this 2019 QB recruitment will eventually settle itself.

Nothing wrong with getting a head start

Ohio State’s first priority in the recruiting world right now is locking down their 2019 class. As they continue to evaluate and receive verbal pledges from their top targets, the staff has to be pleased about where the current class is headed in terms of quality and quantity. However, time and time again, looking a little bit ahead to the classes beyond the immediate cycle certainly doesn’t hurt your efforts when that next class is up and ready to be top priority. As the staff is on the road in various parts of the country, it’s expected that new offers are going to go out fairly often. Yesterday, was no different as multiple were sent out.

In addition to the aforementioned Dwan Mathis, another prospect was fortunate enough to receive the highly coveted Buckeye offer. 2020 defensive-end Tyler Baron, a Tennessee native, also announced via Twitter that Ohio State was the latest to throw their hat into the offer ring.

EXTREMELY Blessed and honored to have received an offer from THE Ohio State University #gobucks ❌ ‼️ pic.twitter.com/Cqs0Us8Jpo

— Tyler Baron (@Tylerbaron23) May 3, 2018

At 6-foot-4, 245 pounds, Baron already has impressive size. Being that he still has two full seasons of prep football to be played however and his frame, there’s a solid chance that Tyler will continue to put on weight and gain strength before he plays on Saturday’s at the next level. An impressive youngster, Baron is currently ranked as a four-star by 247sports and listed specifically as the 10th best player in Tennessee as well as the 13th best weak-side defensive end in the 2020 class. To add to his accolades, Baron also holds double digit offers with schools such as Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, and more already in the fold.

With his current class status, Baron has not yet been to Columbus before, but now with an offer in hands, a trip to Ohio State is certainly a visit that could see planning in the near future. The Buckeyes will know how serious of a contender they are if they can get Tyler in campus and if so, they’ve been able to go into Tennessee more than once and poach a top prospect. Could Baron be the next? Time will tell.

Quick Hits:

  • In-state prospect and Ohio State priority target Zeke Correll (Anderson/Cincinnati, OH) released his top four schools yesterday. The Buckeyes feel good about where they currently sit with Ohio’s fifth best prospect, but they’ll have to fend off Clemson, Stanford, and Notre Dame in order to bring this star north up the highway to Columbus.

I am BEYOND GRATEFUL for all of the opportunities that I have been given. I would like to thank every coach that has reached out to me and recruited me. But above all, I would like to honor God for getting me here. ‼️TOP 4‼️Also thanks to @Recruit_Edits for this dope edit!! pic.twitter.com/kJkFMec07p

  • Four-star linebacker and Florida native Rian Davis announced a top-12 list yesterday via his Twitter. In addition to Ohio State making the cut, Georgia, Houston, Louisville, Oregon, Texas, Clemson, Arizona State, Alabama, Miami, Indiana, and NC State also made the list.

With the loss, the season is more than likely over for the Buckeyes.

The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team lost what is likely its final game of the season Thursday, falling to Johns Hopkins, 6-5, in Ann Arbor in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 8-7 on the season, including 3-3 in conference play, and have all but been eliminated from contention for a spot in the NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse tournament.

In a closely contested struggle, neither team was able to find a rhythm on attack as both defenses played lights out for four quarters. The game was also a highly chippy one, which culminated in a massive brawl midway through the fourth quarter and resulted in two players being ejected.

Both teams were held scoreless for most of the first quarter as the defenses came out strong from the start with each forcing turnovers on the attack. Finally, with four minutes remaining in the opening period, sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire shot an absolute rocket from behind the arc, connecting for the first score of the game and giving the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Ohio State capitalized on its lead early in on in the second as junior attackman Jack Jasinski scored his 17th goal of the season to put the Buckeyes up two. That’s when the extracurriculars started, with players from each side receiving unsportsmanlike penalties in what would become a very chippy game. Hopkins emerged from the scuffle, profiting off an Ohio State turnover as Kyle Marr put the Blue Jays on the board to narrow the Buckeyes’ lead to one.

Freshman midfielder Jackson Reid, who bore the brunt of Ohio State’s unsportsmanlike penalty, made up for his mistake as he tipped in a goal off a feed from Leclaire. Johns Hopkins answered with 6:15 left in the half on a shot from Joel Tinney, but the Buckeyes bounced back as sophomore defenseman Jeff Henrick scored his first goal of the season, assisted by senior defenseman Erik Evans. As the quarter closed, however, two Ohio State defenders earned penalties, giving the Blue Jays a two-man-up opportunity which they leveraged to close the Buckeyes lead to one heading into the break.

The defenses emerged strong once again in the third, as neither team scored until the 3:14 mark, when Hopkins tied things up at four-all heading into the final 15 minutes.

Ohio State’s attack controlled possession early in the fourth. After a pair of missed shots, the Buckeyes finally found the back of the net on another score from Reid--his 23rd of the season. Ohio State controlled the ball for another possession, but came up empty. During the transition, senior attackman Colin Chell was called for pushing, which somehow turned into an all-out bench-clearing brawl that led to a player on each side getting ejected.

Less than two minutes later, Hopkins scored to tie things up at five-all. Ohio State controlled the next possession, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Blue Jays were content to hang onto the ball, even earning a shot clock violation with 32 seconds left to give the Buckeyes a shot at the win. Unfortunately, a bad pass gave the ball right back to the Blue Jays and, 13 seconds later, the goal that proved to be the nail in the coffin of Ohio State’s Big Ten Tournament.

Reid’s two goals led the team, with the Buckeyes taking 37 shots to Hopkins’ 17. Freshman specialist Justin Inacio won 11-of-14 faceoffs on the day for Ohio State, and sophomore goalie Josh Kirson had four saves on the day. Ohio State proved dominant on defensive categories, forcing eight turnovers and collecting 28 ground balls to the Blue Jays’ 15.

Johns Hopkins will go on to play Maryland, the top seed in the conference tournament, Saturday in Ann Arbor.
