The Ohio State alumni beat the West Virginia Wildcats in their quest for $2 million.

For a Buckeye basketball fan, Saturday’s first round game for Team Scarlet & Gray in the 2018 The Basketball Tournament was as close to going back in time as is currently scientifically possible. With a roster comprised of some of the best OSU hoop stars from the past decade or so, the top-seeded team in the Midwest region blitzed the No. 17 seed West Virginia Wildcats, 99-68, on their quest to secure the $2 million, winner-take-all prize.

The Wildcats defeated the Charlotte Chess Center 114-87 on Friday night to earn the honor to play against Columbus’ favorite sons. With current (Micah Potter, C.J. Jackson, Andre Wesson, and Joey Lane) and former (Michael Redd and Clark Kellogg) Buckeyes in the arena, the Nuthouse student section getting the crowd amped, former coach Thad Matta in attendance, and the Voice of the Buckeyes Paul Keels on play-by-play, it is difficult to imagine a better way for OSU faithful to spend a summer afternoon as they await the start of fall football camp.

It was like old times early on as Jared Sullinger hit a turn-around jumper from the block, Aaron Craft hit a three-pointer, and Dallas Lauderdale paced the Scarlet & Gray to an early 7-0 lead.

Ryan Taylor got the West Virginia Wildcats on the board with just over five minutes left in the first quarter, but on the next trip down the floor, David Lighty got the S&G scoring again to put the de facto home team up 7-2.

As Team Scarlet & Gray’s head coach Scoonie Penn made some substitutions, the Wildcats’ Ed Henry hit a bucket to cut the S&G lead to five, but n the next trip down the floor, “BJ” Byron Mullens found a cutting Talor Battle driving through the lane to put S&G up 16-9.

From there the Big Ten’s all-time leading three-point scorer Jon Diebler hit his first triple of the 2018 TBT to give the “home” squad a 19-11 lead.

At the end of the first quarter, Scarlet and Gray held a 21-14 advantage having shot 52.9 percent from the floor, while the Wildcats only completed a quarter of their attempts.

Early in the second quarter, the Wildcats made the mistake of leaving Sullinger open from downtown on consecutive possessions, and the former first-round pick hit a pair of three-pointers to put S&G up 29-17.

Sullinger is making the most of this weekend’s games, because should S&G advance, Sully will have to miss the next weekend’s games, as he will be getting married. However, he will be replaced on the roster by another all-time Buckeye great Greg Oden.

With 4:30 left in the second quarter, Craft spun towards the baseline and found Lauderdale who slammed it home. Then, on the next possession, Lighty found the big man who laid it in to give S&G a 38-21 lead.

As the former Buckeyes continued to pad their lead with halftime approaching, Mullens decided to pull up early in a possession from way downtown and banked it home. On the subsequent trip, former Nittany Lion Battle hit a three for Scarlet & Gray to put them up 54-28.

Is Byron Mullens even IN the arena on this three?! @ScarletGrayTBT #TBT2018 pic.twitter.com/xl29tyxssN

— TBT (@thetournament) July 21, 2018

At halftime, the home team held a commanding 55-30 advantage. Sullinger had 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, while Battle was a perfect 4-for-4 en route to his 11 points.

With S&G’s lead hovering around 20 in the third quarter, the tenacious defense that got them the advantage started to get a little lax. However, one of the few non-Buckeyes on S&G’s roster Battle got things back on track with another three-pointer, pushing the lead back to 64-43.

Then with 2:16 left in the third quarter, an outlet-pass found Battle alone in the front court, and rather than taking the easy layup, he used the backboard to pass it to Mullens who enthusiastically slammed it home and give S&G a 70-45 lead.

This season, TBT is employing the Elam Ending score system, which is designed to prevent the tedious, foul-heavy endings to most basketball games. At the first stoppage after the four-minute mark in the fourth quarter, the goal score is determined by adding 7 points to the score of the team that’s in the lead. From there, the first team to get there, wins.

With just under seven minutes to play, former Buckeye Evan Ravenel slammed it home, Northern Illinois alum Leon Rodgers hit a triple, and William Buford got a put-back to keep the Wildcats at bay.

With 3:57 left, Penn called a timeout to activate the Elam Ending, with a 98-point target set.

Team Scarlet & Gray, with assistant coach Evan Turner, will take on the Texas Tech-based Matadors tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET, which will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks.

Earlier in the day fourth-seeded Big X, a team comprised of former Big Ten players, beat No. 13 Chattanooga, 81-79. Big X includes former Buckeye Andrew Dakich who finished the game three points and seven assists. His former OSU teammate Jae’Sean Tate is on the team’s roster, but he did not play in their first round game.

Team Scarlet and Gray is back with your Thad Matta-era favorites, and Team Big X has a couple recent Buckeyes to root for.

It’s here! Your now-annual way to re-watch some of the most dynamic players under former Ohio State men’s basketball coach Thad Matta and to catch a couple of Holtmann’s alumni too.

The 2018 edition of The Basketball Tournament is underway, with the Midwest Regionals taking place this weekend in Columbus. The games aren’t tipping off at The Schott, but they are just down the road at Capital University — still plenty close for local Ohio State fans to see some of their favorite alumni.

There are two teams featuring Buckeyes to keep an eye on during the tournament: Team Scarlet and Gray and Team Big X.

Team Scarlet and Gray

This is the real marquee event for Buckeye fans, with Scoonie Penn acting as the team’s head coach, and Evan Turner as the assistant. The roster includes fan favorites like Aaron Craft, David Lighty, Jon Diebler, Jared Sullinger, and William Buford — just to name a few.

The team sailed through last year’s regional games, winning each matchup by at least 10 points, and (surprise, surprise) Aaron Craft averaged 9.6 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 4.6 apg and 1.4 spg in last year’s tournament.

Craft and crew were knocked out of the 2017 TBT in the semi-final round, after dropping 88-83 thanks to a couple last-minute shots by their opponent, Team Challenge ALS.

Team Big X

This is the first year of the tournament for the Big Ten squad featuring two Buckeyes Andrew Dakich and Jae’Sean Tate, along with mostly Michigan alumni.

“Our team is about teaming up with guys from all over the Big Ten that spent their careers battling against each other. We feel TBT is the perfect platform to show off Big Ten hoops and our players skills. We have a bunch of guys who recently graduated from their playing day in college and are playing with a chip on their shoulders. We are young and ready to hoop!” - Jay Shunnar, GM

Considering the timespan between the Matta squad and Dakich and Tate, it’s not entirely surprising that they didn’t link up for the annual tournament. Not that there’s any love lost between the two, but Dakich might be a little bitter about all the support thrown at Team Scarlet and Gray over Big X.

No love for @TheBIGX_TBT huh?!? https://t.co/S3BY2dtgg7

MotS&G Season Preview: Oregon State @ Ohio State

Season Preview: Oregon State @ Ohio State
Richard Tongohan
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

With 43 days left until the Ohio State season opener, there is a lot of hype with the 2018-2019 team. Since we are ready for the season to begin, I will take my shot at previewing the games on deck for this season. If I get worked up, let it happen–this offseason has dragged on way too long, but its nearly over with!

The first game of the season will be an out-of-conference game against another Power-5 team in Oregon State. The Beavers have a new head coach in Jonathan Smith and he looks to improve from a 1-11 overall record, going winless in the Pac 12. He will attempt to resurrect his teams spread offense with a brand new starter at Quarterback and a pair of offensive player that look to build on last seasons numbers in JR Artavis Pierce and RS JR Noah Togiai. Pierce had a decent season with 323 yards on 68 carries with just a single touchdown and he also added 128 yards on 15 catches. Togiai, on the other hand, had 34 catches for 461 yards and 2 scores.

On the other side of the ball, they return 4 of their top 5 defenders from last season, which would help the newer players in the long run. Safeties Jalen Moore and David Morris return after recording 75 tackle seasons and a pick a piece and a forced fumble. Jonathan Willis also returns with the entire linebacking core that tallied 155 total tackles between them, 5.5 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. It is quite the collection of defenders within this multi-scheme based defense. Isaiah Dunn is the lone returnee at Corner and they will need to be aggressive with the Ohio State receivers to be competitive in this game.

On Ohio State’s end, their offense will have a new starter in Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell. Haskins has the advantage, but Martell seems to be making it interesting as we inch closer toward fall camp. I think Haskins will edge out in the end, with Martell getting a package of plays to keep the defenses on their heels. Ohio State also returns a ton of weapons from a season ago, with a battle at Tight End coming with the recent addition of Jeremy Ruckert, the upperclassmen better be ready for a dogfight with the true freshman. Most of the receivers have returned for a season with Haskins and both Running Backs are back as well. It is a potent accumulation of talent that could explode in this game–that could set the table for the rest of the season.

The defense is also returning many starters and they should pick up where they left off with potential NFL draft implications at stake. Nick Bosa, Dre’mont Jones, Damon Arnette, Kendall Sheffield, Jordan Fuller are the more notable members of the defense that are eligible for the 2019 NFL Draft, and I am sure they wouldn’t mind bolstering their stock during this season. A ton of underclassmen will also look to improve with Chase Young and Robert Landers looking to be a disruptive force and a near brand-new group of Linebackers behind them.

Prediction:

The defense will be too much for the Oregon State offense, especially the Offensive Line. With Bosa becoming a full-time starter and Young lining up opposite, and Landers and Jones on the interior, it’ll be great to see them demolish the other team and throw them out of rhythm.

The Linebackers will close the running lanes as the DB’s lock up the Beaver #1 receiving threat Togiai. The Linebackers will be without Borland, who suffered an injury, but his replacement Browning or Mitchell will show their skills.

With all things considered, I think the back seven will suffocate the offensive attack and they’ll come up with a few turnovers–especially with a young, unproven signal-caller, it’ll be ugly. I predict a two-pick game and a fumble type of game.

The Ohio State offense will make a statement after shaking off the rust, the offense will put up points in a hurry afterward. I think 3 receiving scores and 4 on the ground. Campbell, Dixon, and Mack score through the air and Dobbins, Weber, Martell, and Teague rumble it in, with Martell and Teague scoring when the starters get pulled.

Ohio State defeats Oregon State: 49-10

Plus, The Basketball Tournament starts tomorrow and plenty of Buckeye news from around the NFL.

“Bosa had 13.5 sacks and 23 TFLs in his first two seasons and those numbers could see a huge uptick as he becomes a bigger part of the Ohio State defense. In a class that looks full of impressive defensive linemen, Bosa will be among the top prospects.”

-Ben Natan, Bleeding Green Nation

The 2018 football season is inching closer, and with that also comes talk about the draftable players to watch heading into 2019. While it might seem a little early to forecast where the top college football players will go following the upcoming season, there’s plenty of people naming some Buckeyes to keep an eye on.

In Ben Natan’s preview of some of the top players heading into the season, Nick Bosa tops his list at edge defender, and Dre’Mont Jones is named as an interior player to watch.

These two names should be floating around some of the bigger networks throughout the season, and with Joey Bosa’s successful transition to the NFL from Ohio State, all eyes will be on Nick as he makes his case to be the No. 1 overall pick next April.

Jones isn’t someone that Draft Twitter has discovered yet, but it’s just a matter of time. In the past two seasons, the DL nabbed 71 total tackles, 9.0 for loss, and a sack. With the Buckeyes using a heavy rotation among their defensive line in 2017, Jones hasn’t seen the type of snap count that would reflect his contributions on the stat line, but heading into his final year at Ohio State, he should definitely be a bigger part of the Buckeyes’ scheme.

The 2018 edition of The Basketball Tournament has already gotten underway, but the Midwest regional will begin on Saturday. This is the group that Buckeye fans will want to keep an eye on, with plenty of Ohio State alumni suiting up once again in Columbus.

Team Scarlet and Gray is back for their second season, after coming up just shy of the championship in 2017. The team features Thad Matta-era Buckeyes and fan favorites like Aaron Craft, David Lighty, and Jared Sullinger. The group of guys initially came together last season to pay homage to their former coach who was unceremoniously dismissed by Ohio State, and it almost felt like no time was lost from when the group last played together.

One thing you quickly notice when watching team @ScarletGrayTBT practice? Just how much they enjoy playing basketball together. pic.twitter.com/YeJ8ti28it

— Lori Schmidt (@LoriSchmidt) July 17, 2018

I mean, look at how happy they are. This is the look of teammates who truly enjoy playing together and being around one-another, and it’s something that Chris Holtmann is hoping can happen with his very young group of guys as they prepare for their trip to Spain.

It isn’t just the OSU alumni on Team Scarlet and Gray to keep an eye on, but team Big X also features former players from throughout the Big Ten, including Andrew Dakich and Jae’Sean Tate. The Big X crew take the court first against the Chattanooga Trenches, with the Scarlet & Gray squad facing off against a yet unknown opponent later in the afternoon.

On Terrelle Pryor Sr. and his potential with the Jets in 2018 — Smackdad, Gang Green Nation

“This had to have been a bitter disappointment for the talented Mr. Pryor, who now faced an uncertain future coming off an injury and a disastrous performance and moving swiftly towards football middle age at the age of 29. One year removed from his breakout campaign with the Browns Pryor could only obtain a one year $4.5 million dollar prove it deal with the Jets.”

The Buckeyes are set to host another top prospect from Michigan.

The Ohio State Buckeyes football season is almost right around the corner. Next week marks Big Ten Media Days in Chicago and that’s the sign that fall camp is about to get underway. The long awaited season is about to begin and while that’s the first and main priority for this Ohio State coaching staff, recruiting will surely continue to be at the forefront of the talk until that first Saturday game day in Columbus. With top notch prospects still headed to campus for visits, the staff knows they’re to continue impressing and keeping their foot on the gas with this momentum. As the 2019 class looks to be rounding out in terms of the few last prospects “thought” to be Buckeye leans, newer names may surface, but the 2020 class and beyond will continue to add more and more prospects to their targeted lists.

Visit to OSU coming for TSUN native

It’s been mentioned several times so we won’t waste a bunch of time explaining, but the fact of the matter is, Ohio State recruiting in a rival state, Michigan, is just the cherry on top when beating both teams on the field with a few sprinkles here and there of Michigan native guys on the roster. Ever since Meyer’s tenure at the helm of the Buckeye program, Michigan natives have been a target for this recruiting staff and that won’t stop any time soon as long as the state produces the talent coveted by Ohio State. In the 2020 class alone, Ohio State may land Michigan’s top overall prospect, but if they can land another top 15 kid, that would surely be fine too.

Devell Washington, a Bay City, Michigan native, is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound receiver that does it all for his Bay City Central prep team. A true deep threat as well as long and lengthy type kid, Devell is a prospect that in time may see a serious bump in his recruiting rankings. Being a 2020 status kid, Washington is thought to be a composite three-star prospect and Michigan’s 13th best player for that said class. This past June, Devell was offered by the home-state Wolverines and exactly a week later, Ohio State also came knocking with an offer. A commit-able offer at this time or not, there’s a strong interest on the Buckeye side of things and that looks to be reciprocated as news came out yesterday that Washington intends to visit Columbus next weekend on the 27th.

A relationship may have already been formed, but this upcoming visit will only help to solidify the interest between the two parties. His status with the coaching staff will certainly be evaluated and you can bet they’ve already done their homework in terms of how serious they are in terms of trying to land Devell for their already incredible 2020 class. Currently, Michigan State is thought to be the clear-cut favorite in this race and if that remains true, the Buckeyes will be able to be selective in the 2020 receiver recruiting scene as this 2019 cycle will easily re-stock the cupboards for Coach Smith. Time will tell, but the July 27 visit will be one to pay attention to.

The trend continues

Staying where we left off in TSUN, another big time player from Michigan will be on campus this coming July 27. Shaping up to be the biggest recruiting day until the season start, Ohio State is set to play host to several top guys mainly from the 2020 class. Originally reported by Lettermen Row’s Jeremey Birmingham, Detroit King star Rashawn Williams will head to Columbus once again to see what the Buckeyes have to offer. Camping and visiting Ohio State multiple times already, Williams isn’t a stranger to the Buckeye program or campus. This visit, however, looks to be another chance for him to get back to the facility and further grow his relationship with the staff who obviously would love to add him to the fold for the 2020 class.

Ranked as Michigan’s No. 3 player in the class, Williams is also a top 125 player regardless of position and more specifically the No. 21 receiver in the nation, according to 247sports. More than deserving of his high four-star status, after seeing Williams compete both for Detroit King and also Legacy Football Organization’s 7-on-7 travel team, Rashawn has the tools to be a prolific player at the next level. His size is solid, but with another two years of prep ball to be played, it’s pretty clear he’ll continue to add speed and strength and maybe even more size. With his route running abilities and jump-ball type skills, Urban would absolutely love his quarterbacks to have another weapon such as Williams. If this upcoming visit goes smooth, that’s a thought that could become reality.
