Player Safety: Helmets & Pads

First position-specific helmet ranks No. 2 in NFL lab testing

GettyImages-579815078-e1618943060765.jpg

Helmet maker Vicis introduced the first position-specific helmet and the NFL announced on Tuesday that it has performed well in its first round of laboratory testing.

The Vicis Zero2-R Trench helmet is designed for offensive and defensive linemen and it ranked second among all 41 helmet models tested by the league. Another new Vicis model, the Zero2-R Matrix, ranked first and a third, the Zero2-R, rounded out the top three.

“Players have more and better choices than ever before. Continued improvement in helmet design has raised the bar for top performing helmet models,” NFL Executive Vice President Jeff Miller said in a statement. “The introduction of the first position-specific helmet is a promising development within the helmet industry to further customize helmets for the unique safety requirements of each position. The NFL and NFLPA have long supported critical innovation in helmet design through our research and innovation challenges and by providing necessary data to manufacturers, and we’re excited for that effort to yield tangible results.”

NFL, players' association approve first position-specific helmet design for OL, DL

The NFL and NFL Players Association have approved a position-specific helmet design for the first time since they began regulating equipment for players, representatives for both groups confirmed Tuesday.

The helmet, known as the VICIS ZERO2-R TRENCH, was built for offensive and defensive linemen and is ranked No. 2 on the league's 2021 safety rankings. The helmets are equipped with bumpers on their front and upper sides, where NFL engineering studies showed are a common point of contact for linemen who absorb concussion-causing contact, according to Dr. Ann Good, a senior engineer at BioCore and a consultant to the NFL.

The league and union have been ranking helmets based on proprietary safety data since 2015, using lab tests designed by BioCore, and began banning the lowest-performing helmets in 2019. The primary goal was to drive down reported concussion totals among players, which peaked at 281 during the 2017 season. The 2021 ratings, distributed to teams Tuesday, added three models to the prohibited list and six to a category called "not recommended."

Approximately 18% of players finished the 2020 season using one of those nine helmet models. But Dr. Kristy Arbogast, an engineering consultant for the NFLPA, said her expectation is that almost all of them will move to a better-performing helmet in 2021. In each of the past two seasons, 99% of NFL players have used a helmet recommended by the NFL/NFLPA ratings.

DB recruiting failures as seen in 2020

I think last year was a combination of issues - lack of playing time, lack of developed talent and yes, an overall lack of depth due to what @BB73 called inexcusable, which I'll go with since we're in this forum.

You fix that by recruiting and development. Things cannot stay the same and maintain the standard (which, honestly has been amazing) that has been set.

And consider me also concerned about the offensive tackle position because it looks like the same cycle is potentially developing.

Johnson picked UCLA over Stanford and Cal.

The junior center averaged 8.3 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks this season in 25 minutes per game.

Because the NCAA granted every player an extra year of eligibility because of the pandemic, Johnson will have two years of eligibility remaining.

An elite student, Johnson is graduating this spring from Rutgers with a degree in Electrical Engineering and was admitted into UCLA's EE grad program.

There is no consistency in the way the NCAA penalizes schools for things. You would have gotten away with the jewelry for tattoos in Ohio State was in the $EC. That entire conference gets carte blanche with everything

We got nailed on tats-for-trinkets because Tressel didn't report it to the University or the NCAA.

Classic case of the cover up being worse than the so-called crime, which is why he got hit with a five-year show-cause penalty.

RB Bri'onte Dunn (dismissed from team)

Former Ohio State RB Bri'onte Dunn indicted on kidnapping and drug charges

Dunn is facing a nine-count indictment.

Former Ohio State running back Bri'onte Dunn is facing nine counts in an indictment filed in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

Dunn pleaded not guilty Monday to the charges including kidnapping, corrupting others with drugs, abduction, tampering with evidence, two counts of possession of drugs and three counts of trafficking in drugs.

According to an affidavit filed by Grandview Heights police, officers were called to a home in January on Junction Way, near Yard Street, for a woman who was suffering an apparent overdose.

She was given Narcan, regained consciousness and taken to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Police said Dunn was detained and officers found approximately 20 grams of cocaine in his jacket while executing search warrants.

Which baseball record will never be broken?

Extremely long odds but not impossible. 511 wins and 749 complete games will never, ever be approached much less broken.

The modern day record for wins is Greg Maddox with 355. It took him 23 years.

Gaylord Perry had 303 complete games. The 38 guys who had more finished their careers by 1965 or earlier.

A no hitter has been a no hitter since they started playing baseball. No one has ever thrown three in a row. Only one guy in the history of the game has ever thrown 2 in a row.

If you want to use the modern game to reinforce the wins and CG's then you have to do the same for no hitters. Hitters are too good and managers (GM's really) won't let anyone throw three straight complete game no hitters even if a pitcher could put himself in that position.

I agree that the W's and CG's could never be broken. Neither will Sam Crawford's 309 career triples or Vander Meer's two consecutive no hitters. Probably a few more I'm not thinking of but I lump them all together in the category of never be broken. It really isn't worth debating how infinitesimally small the chances of any one of those being broken are vs another one.

Sean Miller (Former HC Arizona Wildcats)

Report: Sean Miller's next job likely as NBA assistant

It was reported Wednesday that the University of Arizona fired men’s basketball coach Sean Miller. Miller became the second high-profile coach on campus to leave their post in recent months, following in the footsteps of Kevin Sumlin, who was fired as Arizona football coach in December.

A number of candidates have been mentioned as possible replacements for Miller. The school’s decision to part ways with Miller drew a wide-ranging collection of reactions via social media throughout the day.

The immediate employment prospects of Miller may include the NBA. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski provided an update Wednesday on what the next step could be for the now-former Arizona coach.

“Sean Miller’s immediate future is likely as an NBA assistant coach,” Wojnarowksi tweeted. “At least one team expressed interest in the offseason, sources said, and now that he’s left Arizona, it’s expected Miller will move in that direction in the offseason.”

2021 NCAA Tournament, Brackets and games

They need to change the water supply or something up in Spokane. Few has quite a few good players but Baylor had the athletes who could also play the game. Made the Gonzaga players look like elementary school kids the first couple minutes of the game. I am beginning to wonder what is so great about Few. All of these NCAA appearances and no national championship and really not that many Final four appearances.

JMHO, In recent years Gonzaga has been a very good team; however, they are usually over rated due to their won/loss record*, i.e. this year they were undefeated up until the final game. They are the far superior team in a 2nd tier conference. Yeah, they did beat Iowa, Kansas, Auburn, West Virginia, and Virginia; but (other than Virginia who were no where close to their 2019 Championship team) none of these teams were the top team in their respective conferences this year, etc. I seriously doubt that Gonzaga could have gone undefeated in the B1G this year playing a 20 game conference schedule. They probably would have been a legitimate contender; but would likely have ended up with 2 to 4 conferences losses.

* Hell, before the championship game CBS Sports was hyping them as one of the greatest teams of all time regardless if they beat Baylor or not:

Gonzaga is a win away from undefeated immortality, but already deserves to be placed among the greatest teams

The 31-0 Zags are trying to become the first undefeated team since 1975-76 Indiana, but have already shown their greatness

Gonzaga does not need to beat Baylor to secure a highly perched place in college basketball history.

Championship games understandably carry considerable weight; they are the arbiters of a season. Yet: a single result should not overrun nor overshadow, in Gonzaga's case, an accumulation of 31 wins by an average of 22.4 points. These undefeated Bulldogs are storybook as is. The Jesuit school tucked away in Spokane, Washington, out of the West Coast Conference, a once-plucky outfit with the quirky-sounding name that always showed up in the bracket.
