NCAA Football: Indiana at Ohio State

Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

One play or big moment per day as we count down to the start of Ohio State’s 2023 football season.

As we count down to the start of the 2023 season, we will be looking back at one play or big moment in
Ohio State history over the past decade or so that corresponds to the remaining days left until Buckeyes take the field against Indiana on Sept. 2. There are 65 days remaining.

Play of the Day: Ezekiel Elliott’s 65-yard TD vs. Indiana (2015)

Ezekiel Elliott rushes for a 65-yard touchdown against Indiana in 2015. Elliott was a one-man team that afternoon, as he scored long TDs of 55, 65 and 75 yards in Bloomington en route to a 274-yard game as the Buckeyes went on to win 34-27. Cardale Jones passed for 245 yards and a TD, while Jalin Marshall led Ohio State in receiving with six catches for 110 yards. Michael Thomas hauled in the lone touchdown through the air.

Players to Wear the #65 (since 2010):

  • Justin Boren (2009-10)
  • Nick Humphries (2011)
  • Pat Elflein (2012-16)
  • Philip Thomas (2017-19)
  • Zen Michalski (2021-present)

The Buckeyes remain in the mix for a top 2024 four-star safety target.

With official visit season for the month of June now complete, Ohio State’s coaching staff can take a quick break. Spending nearly everyday recruiting from sun up to sun down, the hours this staff put in seem endless, and all of that work is starting to pay off. Over the next few weeks, it will be decision mode for many of these top targets.

While the Buckeyes have been fortunate to see two new additions to the 2024 class, they’re hoping the rest of this summer provides some more booms. One recent visit to Columbus, four-star safety target and IMG Academy product Jordon Johnson-Rubell, made the trek to Ohio State June 16 for an official visit, and has announced a decision coming this weekend.

ANNOUNCEMENT!!! I’ll be committing this Saturday live on @Rivals on YouTube 2:00 CT.

What’s the move?? pic.twitter.com/t6vXss1igg

— Jordon Johnson-Rubell (@jjrubell) June 28, 2023

The No. 133 player nationally, Jordon is also considered to be the tenth best safety in the class per the 247Sports Composite grades. At nearly 40 offers to his name, only five schools remain in the mix as he’s really getting closer to making a final call. Still in the hunt for Johnson-Rubell includes TCU, Michigan, Texas, USC, and Ohio State.

Maybe not the biggest surprise, those same five schools are the lone programs listed as “warm” on his 247Sports profile and if there’s a thought to be leader in this one it’s Texas. Leading the way on the 247Sports Crystal Ball with every prediction in favor of the Longhorns, Texas certainly seems to have the inside track to landing the safety, but others will continue to make their case leading up to the decision.

That said, Ohio State is sitting pretty well at the safety position in this current class. With Jaylen McClain already committed, the Buckeyes have realistic chances with other top players at the spot, and cornerback is more of the need in the defensive secondary this cycle.

Quick Hits

  • The Buckeyes have a solid offensive line class to this point for 2024. Wanting to add some more elite depth, position coach Justin Frye is looking to end his haul with a bang, and there’s still some high-profile guys strongly considering Ohio State.

One target the Buckeyes were in on is now off the board, however, as Texas native Daniel Cruz chose to stay at home by announcing his verbal commitment to Texas on Wednesday. The No. 226 player nationally, Cruz is the 13th best interior offensive lineman in the 2024 class per the 247Sports Composite.

BREAKING: Four-Star IOL Daniel Cruz out of North Richland Hills, TX has committed to #Texas over #OhioState, #Oklahoma, #Aggies, & others.

Cruz ranks as the #13 IOL and #226 nationally ranked player via 247 Sports Composite.

  • Fresh off his official visit last weekend to Ohio State, four-star California linebacker target Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is wrapping up his official visit to Notre Dame. Down to USC, Ohio State, and Notre Dame, it’s getting closer to decision time for the No. 100 player nationally and seventh ranked linebacker in the class per the 247Sports Composite.

Each of these official visits tends to go well at any school in reality, but the reports are that the visit to Columbus went very well for Viliamu-Asa. Knowing his Samoan background, it was definitely a comfort to have current Buckeye JT Tuimoloau at his side for much of his visit, as those types of interactions tend to go a long way.

A commitment will come shortly, and the safe bet appears that Kyngstonn will be choosing between staying home and going to USC or choosing Ohio State.

Huge thank you to @NDFootball and staff for having my family and I for an amazing official visit this month. Really felt the love and great hospitality in Southbend. ☘️ #goirish pic.twitter.com/g7fptuxjIm

NCAA Football: Rose Bowl Game-Ohio State vs Washington

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Simba had a legendary season in 2018, and I don’t see his TD record being broken.

From now until preseason camp starts in August, Land-Grant Holy Land will be writing articles around a different theme every week. This week is all about records, the ones that have been broken, the ones that could be broken, and the ones that will never be broken. You can catch up on all of the Theme Week content here and all of our ”Broken Records” articles here.

Ohio State is going to have an absolute powerhouse of an offense this year — there’s no denying that. The amount of weapons Kyle McCord or Devin Brown has at his disposal seem almost endless. However, because whoever the quarterback is will be a first-year starter, I don’t see Dwayne Haskins’ record of 50 passing touchdowns in a single season being broken in 2023.

In 2018, no defense was stopping Haskins. He had six games where he threw for four or more TDs. There was only one game where he threw for just one, and zero games where he didn’t throw for at least one score.

Oh, and let’s not forget he had six passing touchdowns in two games. One of the opponents was Indiana. The other? The glorious 62-39 win versus TTUN. Then he threw five TDs against Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship and three against Washington in the Rose Bowl! He showed UP in big games.

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

Fifty passing touchdowns in a single season simply insane when you think about it. Haskins was just the sixth FBS quarterback to do just that. The Buckeyes have had a slew of great, even some of the best statistical QBs over the past few years, and none came close to breaking Haskins’ record.

Justin Fields did have a pretty darn great follow-up year after Haskins went pro. In 2019, Fields threw 40 touchdowns and ran for 10. So technically he did match the 50 record, but he used his legs to do so. Obviously, Fields is a dual-threat while Haskins was not. Perhaps that makes it even more impressive that Fields still threw for that many. Fields is just a gem.

Moving on to C.J. Stroud, he had 38 passing touchdowns in his first year as a starter in 2021. He finished with zero rushing TDs and -30 rushing yards on the season. So, clearly, you would think he would be your next best bet to break Haskins’ record. But, in 2022 he finished with 37 TDs and once again, zero rushing.

It surprises me a bit that Stroud didn’t reach the 40 mark in either year of him starting. He had Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson AND Jaxon Smith-Njigba in his first year. Wow! If he couldn’t get it done with these guys, then I guess the record just wasn’t meant to be broken. This is no shade to Stroud at all — 38 TDs is still extremely impressive. But, Haskins was just another level.

So, do I think this year McCord or Brown can do it? My early answer is no, but anything is possible. With the receiving room they have, they could stick me under center and I could throw at least a couple touchdowns, right? I do see the McCord to Marvin Harrison Jr. connection being strong, since they were high school teammates, so I predict a lot of TDs from that duo.

However, it is just such a feat to reach the 50 mark. Yes, Haskins did complete it in his first-year as a starter, but he was such a pure passer. I don’t see him and McCord being the exact same style QB. I must reiterate, anything is possible with this offense and I do see AT LEAST 30 TDs being thrown (hopefully more). Overall, I think Haskins name will remain in the record books for the near future.

On this episode of Hangout in the Holy Land, Josh and Chuck (finally!) talk a little Ohio State basketball, as they take a look at Brice Sensabaugh’s NBA potential. Will the Buckeyes’ top scorer from a year ago become a top dog in the league? Or is he simply too one-dimensional? The guys struggle to come up with a strong pro comp for Sensabaugh but agree that he has plenty of work to do.

The hosts then recap an exciting week of recruiting news for OSU football, highlighted by a couple of commitments from the Cleveland Glenville pipeline.

And it would not be a summer episode without out at least some theme-week-related conversation. LGHL’s theme this week is Broken Records, which motivated the Hangout boys to scour sportsbooks for Marvin Harrison Jr. props.

Plus, a few questions sent in by you, the listener(s).
