2023 Heisman Trophy Presentation

There is a lot of controversy from SEC country over this.

The Biletnikoff Award is giving annually to college football’s most outstanding receiver. This past Friday, Marvin Harrison Jr. received it after a lot of people said that he was snubbed from winning it last year. However, this year, people are going crazy on social media saying he shouldn’t have even won. What’s the deal?

The two other finalists alongside Marv were Malik Nabers from LSU and Rome Odunze from Washington. A LOT of people are saying that Nabers deserved the award over Marv, based largely on their statistical comparison. Harrison Jr. had 1,211 receiving yards on 67 receptions and 14 touchdowns. Nabers had 1,546 receiving yards on 86 receptions and 14 touchdowns.

So, yes Nabers statistically had the better season... but this award isn’t based off stats. If you think that’s the case, then Michael Penix Jr. should have won the Heisman over Jayden Daniels. Penix Jr. has 4,218 passing yards compared to Daniels’ 3,812.

Keep in mind though, that Daniels did win the Heisman. That means that Nabers had the best player in the entire country throwing to him all season long. Meanwhile, and this is absolutely no shade to Kyle McCord, Marv had a QB throwing to him who is now going to transfer to a lesser program. Imagine the numbers Harrison Jr. could have put up if he had Daniels throwing to him.

Like I said earlier, this award is not just stats. Watch the film. I must admit, I haven’t watched LSU too much this season as I’m covering and watching Ohio State every single week, but I can guarantee you that there is no receiver who can do it like Marv. The fact that every single game he makes us say, “is he even human?” is proof positive that he is very deserving of this award.

This is not to say that Nabers wasn’t deserving, either. I mean, Harrison Jr.’s one-vote win margin was the closest in Biletnikoff history. Clearly, it could have gone to either player and both would deserve it, and the other team’s fan base would be complaining about it.

Nabers fully believed he was snubbed, though.

REMEMBER THAT!! So disrespectful

Personally, I think he went a bit too far with throwing the word “disrespectful” in there, because it’s not like Harrison Jr. didn’t deserve it at all. He was a finalist this year, and honestly, should have been one last year too.

If I wasn’t an Ohio State fan, I firmly believe that I would still think that Marv is deserving of this award. Watching him week in and week out for the past two years, you know something special when you see it. The body control he possesses is unlike anything I have ever seen — he will ALWAYS find a way to make a catch. The Biletnikoff is supposed to go to the nation’s best wide receiver, not just the player who complied the most stats, and that is unequivocally Harrison Jr.

Plus, his name is in the running to be at the top of the 2024 NFL Draft, should he decide to go pro. Any team would be absolutely blessed to have him. Between his size, talent, passion and leadership abilities, he’s going to vastly improve whichever team he ends up with. Now, he has an extra trophy to pack in his suitcase.

Buckeyes reflect on a win to start the Big Ten calendar.

Throughout the year, Land-Grant Holy Land will be bringing you uncut audio primarily from Ohio State press conferences, but also from individual interview sessions.

It was an eventful start to the Big Ten season for the Ohio State women’s basketball team. It took an overtime period for the Buckeyes to separate themselves from a Penn State Nittany Lions team that almost left Columbus with an upset victory. Instead, it was a 94-84 win for the scarlet and gray.

After the game, head coach Kevin McGuff and stars Cotie McMahon and Jacy Sheldon addressed a number of topics.

Coach McGuff discussed the slow start to the game and playing through a lot of initial whistles that didn’t allow either side to get momentum going. Then, talking about a poor free throw shooting day, the outstanding play for PSU guards Makenna Marisa and Shay Ciezki, plus his thoughts on the return of guard Madison Greene following two seasons where the point guard only appeared 12 times.

McMahon talked about how the team supported Greene’s return to the court — support that included working through the mental part of recovery. Also, McMahon showed her own way of staying humble and grateful in her basketball journey and adjusting to an initially poor start in free throw shooting and getting more comfortable as the game continued.

Sheldon ended availability continuing the discussion surrounding Greene’s return, including the perspective of her and other Buckeyes who have played with Greene since the beginning in 2019. Then the guard talked coming back in a game to win for the first time this season.

That and more on the latest Land-Grant Uncut.

2025 RB Jeff Overton | via @JeffreyOverton1 on Twitter

The Buckeyes offered a 2025 three-star running back on Monday, and there were more rumblings in the transfer portal.

The college football world has been on high-alert with the recent opening of the transfer portal. Since the portal window opened, what seems like every school has been involved in a headline. Because of this, many of the recruiting headlines have been focused on transfers. However, standard recruiting continues to take place as well, and the Buckeyes are making noise as they look to close out the 2024 class and get to work on 2025.

Ohio State offers 2025 RB

Ohio State is busy wrapping up its 2024 recruiting cycle. The Buckeyes have 23 verbal commitments in the class, and are still working on adding to it. The team played host two its two top remaining targets just last weekend, and only positives have been reported since the visits.

Because the Buckeyes’ 2024 class has been nearly-complete for months, the Ohio State coaching staff has been able to get a head start in the 2025 class. Ohio State already holds four verbal commitments in next year’s cycle, and is continuously looking to add to it.

On Monday, the Buckeyes kicked off the week by offering 2025 three-star running back Jeff Overton (Woodbridge, VA / Freedom).

After a great conversation with @CoachTonyAlford I’m blessed and honored to receive an offer from @OhioStateFB !! ⚪@CoachOvertonJ @OvertonDarryl @BrianDohn247 @RivalsFriedman @MohrRecruiting pic.twitter.com/cPLwPjikz2

The Buckeyes are obviously not alone in their pursuit of Overton, and he holds a dozen scholarship offers already from programs like Duke, James Madison, Maryland, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, South Carolina and others.

The sophomore will likely see his recruitment grow as he is coming off an impressive season where he accumulated 2,532 yards on the ground and a whopping 34 touchdowns. He also added 339 receiving yards and five touchdowns through the air.

It is still rather early in Overton’s recruitment, but Duke and Virginia Tech seem to be the early favorites, as they have already hosted him on unofficial visits. Look for the Buckeyes to work to get him on campus at least once for spring or summer recruiting camps, and if the interest remains mutual, a follow-up visit on a game day.

Overton is the No. 52 RB in the 247Sports Composite Rankings and is the No. 619 overall prospect. He is also the No. 17 recruit out of Virginia.

Quick Hits

  • Ohio State is also heavily involved in transfer portal rumblings. The Buckeyes have been reportedly looking at defensive linemen in the portal and have found a target. Former UTSA defensive end Trey Moore has already visited with Texas, but he is scheduled to visit with Ohio State this week. Moore was one of the nation’s top edge rushers last year, racking up 14 sacks.

In addition to his expected visit to Texas, UTSA EDGE transfer Trey Moore is also expected to visit Ohio State, sources tell @247sports.

  • Ohio State has also been linked to former Washington State quarterback Cam Ward. Ward is one of the top transfers at what may be the most important position in football, so he has his list of suitors. It has been reported that the Buckeyes have been in contact with Ward, but there doesn’t appear to be that much smoke for the Wazzu transfer to end up in Columbus. Ward will reportedly visit with Miami today, another team that has been connected to him since he entered the portal.

Washington State transfer QB Cam Ward is visiting Miami tomorrow, his parents told me earlier today. Ward graduated this weekend, flew home tonight and will visit the Hurricanes on Tuesday.

His father said they are still talking through all his options.
