Ohio State is continuing to ramp up the recruiting efforts on the defensive side of the ball for the 2024 class.

It’s no secret Ohio State needs some additions to their 2024 class on the defensive side of the ball. Crushing it when it comes offensive targets, the Buckeyes are basically set there, but again, it the defense that needs some attention. Fortunately, there’s a few of the higher regarded talents in this class that are strongly considering the Buckeyes, and any one of them will be a welcomed addition to the nation’s current No. 2-ranked recruiting class.

That said, where Ohio State tends to do their real bouts of work is with in-person visits, and with several key targets slated to be in Columbus in the coming weeks and months, the Buckeyes are hoping this summer results in a good for the recruiting haul in the 2024 class.

Some positive trends for Ohio State came on Thursday, when current Georgia commit Peyton Woodyard shared via Twitter his plans to be at Ohio State for an official visit this coming summer. Regardless if he’s committed elsewhere or not, this is a big time visit Ohio State is happy to have in their favor.

The No. 61 player nationally, Woodyard is also the fourth-best safety in the class and the sixth best player in California per the 247Sports Composite. Committed to the Bulldogs since January, Woodyard was once a very important target for the Ohio State staff, and a player that the Buckeyes really felt solid about in terms of their chances at landing his recruitment. As noted, he’s been committed for five months now, but making visits to other programs at least opens the door a little bit for other schools to have a chance at flipping him.

It will be a major battle to do any sort of flipping, but his visit slated for June 16-18 shows he’s not closing the door on Ohio State yet. With how important the safety position is in the defense for the Buckeyes, Jim Knowles and Perry Eliano will certainly make sure his time on campus is well spent. Trying to sway him away from Georgia would never be easy considering their back-to-back title campaigns and all of their momentum, but this scheduled visit at least gives the Buckeyes a shot at pitching their best effort.

Buckeyes offer 2024 Florida defensive lineman

Knowing full well that the Buckeyes would like to secure some of their top targets along the defensive line earlier this year in comparison to the 2023 situation, this staff still has plenty of work to do in order to make that the case. Larry Johnson has long been one to go the distance with his top guys, but last cycle showed that missing out on multiple guys can set you back, and that just can’t happen two years in a row with how important these positions are.

Keeping that in mind, Ohio State was busy on the trail Thursday by sending out their latest defensive line offer to Orlando, Florida native, D’antre Robinson. The No. 310 player nationally, Robinson is the 33rd best player at his position and it a current four-star in the 247Sports Composite. At nearly 50 offers to his name already, Ohio State is definitely a little later to the game, but having LJ should make up for lost time as he has long been one of the better recruiters in the game when it comes to his position group.

Schools such as Georgia, Florida, Michigan, LSU, Texas, Tennessee, USC, and several more are already in the fold, but Ohio State now in the mix certainly gives Robinson at least something to really think about. It doesn’t take much research to see how the Buckeyes have fared in Florida for defensive line targets, and when you consider the amount of high profile guys LJ has developed, that too certainly helps their case.

The next steps in the game will be getting him to campus this summer, and if a visit does in fact take place, anything it possible.

The forward from Ohio returns to the Buckeye state following four seasons with the Spartans

Thursday, the Ohio State women’s basketball team received a boost in their roster, adding a second athlete out of the transfer portal. This time, head coach Kevin McGuff gets a 6-foot-3 forward from the Michigan State Spartans: Taiyier Parks. The forward announced it on her Instagram page.

Parks joins the Buckeyes’ program following four seasons with the Spartans. In those years, Parks averaged 7.1 points and 5.5 rebounds, mainly playing as an off the bench spark for former Michigan State head coach Suzy Merchant, who resigned following the end of the 22-23 season.

Last season, Parks started 11 games, averaging 8.3 points and 5.2 rebounds in 18.5 minutes played per game. Parks joins a forward group that coach McGuff referenced at the beginning of the 22-23 season as an area where the team needed more depth.

The Buckeyes did add transfers in Eboni Walker and Karla Vreš, with Walker playing an important role for Ohio State down the postseason stretch. Walker moved into the starting position following an injury to forward Rebeka Mikulášiková on Feb. 8 against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

With Parks, Walker and Mikulášiková have competition for minutes in the paint. Last season, in an upset win for Sparty against the Indiana Hoosiers, Parks had one of the strongest games of her career, scoring 18 points and grabbing 8 assists in the Michigan State win.

Parks didn’t play against Ohio State in the lone meeting between the sides on Dec. 11, 2022, but has had success in previous seasons against her now teammates.

During the 21-22 season, Parks and the Spartans tried spoiling the Buckeyes regular season championship on the final game of the regular season. Even though Ohio State came out victorious, Parks put up 15 points and 12 rebounds, eight of those coming on offensive boards.

In the 22-23 season, Parks was 25th in the conference in overall rebounds (152) and rebounds per game (5.2) and in the 21-22 season was 14th and 12th, respectively. Off the court, Parks excels in the classroom, achieving Academic All-Big Ten honors in two straight seasons.

Ohio State’s new forward played high school basketball at North Royalton High School, a suburb in Cleveland, Ohio. Following high school, Parks considered the Buckeyes and Iowa Hawkeyes as potential landing spots as a four-star recruit, ultimately going with the Spartans.

Parks joins former Duke guard Celeste Taylor as the second pick up for McGuff and the Buckeyes in the transfer portal this offseason. With the Cleveland-native’s move, Ohio State has Walker, Mikulášiková and incoming freshman Faith Carson competing for what’s likely a single starting role next to forward Cotie McMahon, should Mikulášiková and Walker return to the Buckeyes.

As of publishing, there’s been no official word of their return and using their extra year given to students impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. If they do, they’ll join Parks in playing five collegiate seasons.

Now that the NFL Draft dust has settled, Ezekiel Elliott will likely get an opportunity to prove he has something left in the tank.

On March 15, the Dallas Cowboys released Ezekiel Elliott, ending a seven-year relationship between the team and its former first-round draft pick. Taken fourth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, Elliott was one of the last running backs drafted inside the top five. In 2019, the former Buckeye back signed a $90 million dollar contract, also making him one of the last RB to sign a lucrative long-term contract.

A foolish deal from the team’s perspective? Perhaps. But Zeke became an immediate star and won two rushing titles in his first three seasons. Seems like a worthwhile investment to me. Regardless, Elliott was an outlier in many ways.

But after a superb 2019 season – his first playing under the new contract – Elliott’s production began to fall off. While remaining one of the best goal line backs in the league, his yards per carry dipped and his receptions also resulted in minimal gain. The contract became a negative talking point, and minor, inconvenient injuries popped up every few weeks. Zeke the Outlier became Zeke the Salary Cap Burden.

So after seven seasons and one last humiliating snap, Dallas cut ties with Elliott and his bloated contract a few weeks into free agency. Surely the Cowboys attempted to trade their former bell cow, but no team was willing to pick up his exorbitant tab. Zeke was left to his own devices, in search of a new team — and potentially one last chance to make a tangible impact.

Unfortunately for the veteran runner, that search continues. Elliott was linked to both the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles last month, but those rumors appear to have been nothing more than gossip. Dallas has mentioned the possibility of bringing Zeke back at a significantly reduced salary, but how often do on-again, off-again relationships end well for those involved?

“Crop top with the mop top” is currently without a dance partner, but I do not think his involuntary solitude will last for much longer. Because Mr. 85 Yards Through the Heart of the South is still only 27 years of age (soon to be 28), has been recognized as a beloved teammate, and possesses a nose for the endzone like few others.

Right now, Zeke is stuck in running back purgatory, which is a popular landing spot for aging backs. They (RB) have been so good and so productive for so long, that they are hesitant or flat-out refuse to accept a diminished role. But NFL front offices don’t give a damn about nostalgia. No, they are completely turned off by these players’ age, presumed salary demands, and most recent performance. So much so that clubs are often not even willing to offer an incentive-laden, one-year “prove it” deal. They would much rather pursue cheaper, younger labor.

Put another way, many teams view Elliott as a nice Mercedes SUV, but an older model with high mileage. They are looking for an everyday driver, which makes the gas-guzzling, aging luxury vehicle a poor investment. Instead, these teams would rather purchase (or lease) a newer, cheaper mid-size sedan.

Supplanted by Tony Pollard, Elliott remained a supportive teammate in Dallas

Does this mean that Zeke is out of options and/or potentially out of the league? Not at all. Because as the offseason progresses, it will become evident to at least one team that a proven, reliable vet is exactly what they need in their backfield. Especially if that vet has a bloodhound-like nose for the endzone. And the longer Zeke waits, the cheaper he becomes. Which is even more of a win for his eventual team, but a subtle loss for the former Buckeye.

However, Elliott may be at a point in his career where money is not a factor. He still genuinely seems to enjoy playing football, but has never enjoyed much playoff success. So you have to imagine that he would love to pursue a Lombardi Trophy before all is said and done. But we’re also not talking about a 35-year old man here. I actually think Zeke has three or more years left in the tank.

I hope that a team pounces sooner rather than later, because this three-time Pro Bowler and two-time NFL rushing champ could provide tremendous value for a contender. It is not every day that you find a RB with Zeke’s resume, who is also under the age of 30. And even if he were not one of the most productive backs of the last decade, his pass blocking alone makes him a valuable asset.

So wise up, NFL teams. Let Zeke eat!
