The Buckeyes’ coaching staff is out on the recruiting trail during the off week.

The beat goes on for the Ohio State coaching staff. Putting a ton of their efforts this off week into recruiting, it’s been one stop after another for several of the staffers. With many sure to be in attendance at various high school games this weekend, Day has his crew looking to keep up their momentum and finish this 2024 class as strong as possible.

Thursday was much like the rest of the week in that the Buckeyes were all over the country looking for and communicating with their top targets in both the future and current class.

Ohio State offers 2025 New Jersey receiver target​


Ohio State recruits well at every spot, but it’s at another level right now with Brian Hartline and the receivers. Stealing the top national receiver in the country annually or so it seems, this 2024 class is once again the best haul of guys for the position in the nation, and the Buckeyes are potentially looking to add one more. Hartline is winning at at a rate that’s darn near impossible, and you’d be a fool to expect anything less once 2025 is the current cycle on the map.

Putting the off week to good use, on Thursday Ohio State stayed busy on the recruiting trail by offering their latest prospect in the 2025 class, wide receiver De’zie Jones. A 6-foot, 180 pound New Jersey native, Jones is currently the No. 238 player nationally and 43rd best receiver in the class per the 247Sports Composite. Maybe it’s not the highest or most impressive ranking Ohio State is used to reeling in, but if Hartline is offering him, clearly this kid can play ball. With his track record of bringing in elite talent and being able to develop it even more so, any player offered at this position is worth taking.

With double-digit offers to his name, programs such as Kentucky, Maryland, Ole Miss, Penn State, Texas, and others have already thrown their name into the mix. With Ohio State being the latest to do so, surely others will soon follow suit. As his recruitment continues on, the Buckeyes will look to soon get him on campus, and if they can this would be another recruitment you’d have to feel pretty good about Ohio State’s chances in because of the overwhelming success Hartline is having.

Once teammates in Columbus, Justin Fields and C.J. Stroud are now trending in opposite directions in the NFL — and not in the way many had predicted.

Heading into the 2023 NFL season, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields was a popular ‘sleeper’ pick for MVP and/or Offensive Player of the Year. After rushing for over 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns during the previous season, many predicted that he would take a Josh Allen or Jalen Hurts-esque leap as a passer in Year 3, rounding out his game and making him a viable (and dangerous) dual-threat QB at the professional level.

Fans and followers of Fields bore witness to the former Georgia Bulldog and Ohio State Buckeye’s true “dual threatiness” during his productive and highly efficient time on campus, so it just seemed natural that this Ryan Day mentee would finally figure out the passing piece with an improved roster in the Windy City.

C.J. Stroud, on the other hand, was expected to deal with significant growing pains as the new signal caller of a Houston Texans franchise in perpetual rebuild. Although the two-time Heisman Trophy finalist and deadly accurate passer had put up video game numbers as a Buckeye and proven his mettle against a vaunted Georgia defense, he supposedly performed poorly on some test and was drafted into a less-than-ideal situation.

I mean, seriously. Did anyone look at the Texans’ depth chart in August and think those weapons would be remotely productive? Stroud was viewed by some as the rookie QB most likely to fail, with greater bust potential than the likes of Bryce Young, Anthony Richardson, and possibly even Will Levis.

Yet here we are, three weeks into the 2023 season, and not only is Stroud outperforming his fellow rookies, but he is also outperforming Fields. By at least a country mile.

While his team owns just a 1-2 record, Stroud is making wonderful, delicious lemonade out of shriveled, sour lemons... Despite missing all five of Houston’s projected starters along the offensive line (for the past two games)! This past weekend, he surpassed 900 yards in his first three games, becoming just the third NFL rookie to do so — joining Cam Newton and Justin Herbert, a couple of guys with whom you are likely familiar.

But Stroud is the only one to achieve this milestone without throwing a single interception. And oh by the way, he just earned his first NFL victory over a Jacksonville Jaguars team that many expected to run away with the AFC South.

Unfortunately for Fields, his third season has gone in the opposite direction. If the most fun and accurate comp for Stroud is a rocket ship blasting off, then an appropriate and mildly depressing one for Fields is a piece of satellite shrapnel plummeting back to Earth and inducing panic. Simply put, the latter has played awful. Which is different from actually being awful.

However, it is becoming more and more difficult to defend Fields’ on-field performance. Which I find sad, really. Because I, like many others, loved watching him at OSU, as well as during his first few seasons in the NFL. And I truly believed that he would be a megastar in Chicago. I still do, deep in the cavernous recesses of my brain. Against my better judgment. But I must admit that the past three weeks have been incredibly painful to watch.

Fields has seemingly regressed as a QB in every way imaginable. He is holding onto the ball for far too long, which is especially frustrating because holding it and taking hits or sacks has long been viewed as his kryptonite. Not only that, but he is also struggling to process what is going on in front of him, refusing to let it rip even though we all know he has arm talent and appears hesitant to even pull the ball down and run. And that is just not the Justin Fields I know. Or thought I knew... Perhaps his deficiencies and weaknesses were masked by playing in a loaded Ohio State offense, only to be exposed at the next level.

But I just don’t believe that to be true. I can’t get there. Maybe it is because I am struggling to see or comprehend the obvious through my scarlet and gray-tinted glasses, but I still have (some) faith that Fields can and will become at least an above-average NFL starter. However, in order to do so, he desperately needs a one-way ticket out of Chicago.

Because in my opinion, the Bears – and inept franchise – have stunted and potentially ruined Fields’ development in the worst ways possible. Prior to this season, they made several poor draft decisions, failed to acquire any offensive weapons for their young QB, signed approximately zero free agents of note or quality, trotted out the league’s worst offensive line (it still sucks), and to top it all off, hired a defensive-minded head coach and an offensive coordinator whose resume should read something like this:

Skills — I know ball

Qualifications — spent time with Aaron Rodgers, Hall of Fame quarterback, who rarely sought my input

The End

Fields looks, sounds, and gives off the general vibe of someone who is confused, defeated, depressed (professionally speaking), lost, and/or without the teeniest, tiniest bit of confidence. However, I am willing to blame about 70% of his struggles on the once proud organization that selected him 11th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.

But I don’t want to make this all about Fields. The headline does read ‘A tale of two former Buckeye quarterbacks’ after all. So where do these former teammates go from here?

Right now, I think it is too hard to say. Too difficult to predict. While time certainly seems to be running out for one former Buckeye – and the clock just starting for his successor in Columbus – we have seen ‘reclamation project’ QBs find success later in life. Geno Smith is the best current example, although I hope Fields becomes a high-end starter before the age of 30. At the same time, we have also seen QBs find success early, only to fizzle out later or in the end. This may not be the best example, but there’s a tie-in coming, so follow me...

Remember Mike Glennon? Yeah, most people don’t. Anyway, he started 13 games as a rookie for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013. He was not a high draft pick, and he did not have the pedigree or talent of a C.J. Stroud, but he threw for 2,600 yards and 19 TDs (to only 9 INTs) as a rookie. Pretty solid, all things considered. Yet he was benched to begin the following season. In favor of Josh McCown, a journeyman. And then he (Glennon) was never really heard from again...

Except for when he signed a three-year, $45 million dollar contract with the Chicago Bears (in 2017) despite passing for only 1,500 yards during his previous three seasons combined. So this is what the Bears do! They make terrible decisions and ruin talented players! It’s a curse, really. However, I can’t imagine a scenario in which Stroud (like Glennon) is benched in 2024 and finds himself on Chicago’s roster in 2027. I just wanted to bash the Bears one more time for potentially ruining my guy (Fields).

Both Fields and Stroud are still very young, so their respective careers could go any which way. And while they are currently trending in opposite directions, I think that both will ultimately experience great (and prolonged) success. That is how much I believe in the resiliency of Fields, as well as the sustainability of what we are currently seeing from Stroud. Here’s hoping these former Buckeyes find and/or maintain their footing at the highest level, as I would love to see them dispel any false narratives regarding Ohio State signal callers.

Saturday night’s game between Ohio State and Notre Dame is certainly one that we won’t forget. Thankfully the Buckeyes left South Bend with a victory, so it will be a game to remember for all the right reasons. What makes the late victory even better is Ohio State has this week off, so it will not only give the team some time to recover from the emotional win, but it will also let fans kick back and relax this weekend. At least there won’t be a situation like 2017 when the Buckeyes rallied to win 39-38 against Penn State, and then went to Iowa the next week and were throttled by the Hawkeyes.

Unfortunately, this week’s college football schedule isn’t nearly as loaded as what we saw last week. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some good games on the slate, though. Maybe you’re someone who only wants to hurt, so you turn on Michigan State and Iowa on Saturday night. Earlier in the day there could be some hilarity if Kansas is able to go to Austin and upset Texas. Will Notre Dame have a hangover from the loss to the Buckeyes when they have to travel to Duke?

What we want to know this week is what game you are most looking forward to watching since Ohio State is on a bye. This would be the perfect weekend for some chaos around college football since the Buckeyes would only benefit from a bunch of upsets. Usually, the college football weeks that don’t have the sexiest-looking schedules end up being the most entertaining weekends. Hopefully what we see this weekend follows that trend.

Brett’s answer: No. 10 Utah at No. 19 Oregon State​


The Pac-12 is certainly going out with a bang. Right now the conference has four teams in the AP Top 10, and two other teams in the Top 25. Hopefully, the teams don’t end up cannibalizing themselves because it would be fun to see one or two teams from the conference end up in the College Football Playoff before the schools move on to their new conferences starting next season.

Utah is coming off a 14-7 win against UCLA last week. The Utes are still undefeated despite quarterback Cam Rising having yet to play a snap in a game this year as he recovers from a knee injury. Kyle Whittingham’s team might not be winning pretty so far this year, but they are playing physical football that teams like USC aren’t looking forward to going up against. If Utah is able to beat the Beavers in Corvallis, they’ll have a week off before hosting Cal. That will give Rising even more time to recover, and if he isn’t back on the field by then, it’s hard to see him playing this year.

Oregon State is coming off a loss at Washington State over the weekend. The Cougars jumped out to an early lead, putting the Beavers in a hole they didn’t have enough time to climb out of. This week’s game feels like one where Oregon State is more evenly matched with their opponent because of the similar style of play. Even though the Beavers brought in quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei from Clemson, Oregon State is at its best when they get Damien Martinez and the running game going. Along with a strong running game, the Beavers also have a physical defense.

Friday night’s game isn’t going to be for the faint of heart. There is going to be a lot of hitting in a game that feels like it won’t be decided until late in the fourth quarter. Later in the week, I’ll pick a winner for the game in my national picks, but right now I’m just looking forward to sitting down and watching this game and seeing how it plays out. While it would be fun to see Utah win to stay undefeated, I know Oregon State is going to give the Utes all they can handle.

Matt’s answer: No. 13 LSU at No. 20 Ole Miss​


I’m not gonna lie, had Brett not taken Utah and Oregon State, I probably would have gone with that one too. I have long enjoyed and admired Utah and I have been high on the DJU-Train this season, but, since Brett grabbed that Friday night contest, I’m going to turn my attention to Saturday evening.

After the Bayou Bengals fell in the season opener against Florida State, their College Football Playoff chances took an obvious hit. However, given what I expected to be a topsy-turvey year in college football, I knew that whichever blue-blood program lost that game still had a really good shot at making the CFP; in fact, before the season started, I predicted that both would make the final four regardless of the Week 1 matchup.

Of course, LSU doesn’t have any wiggle room left this season if they want to make sure that happens. This week, the No. 20 Ole Miss Rebels will host the No. 13 Tigers in what is essentially a must-win for LSU. I suppose there is a situation in which a two-loss, SEC champion LSU could make the playoff, but that seems like about as long of a longshot as you could imagine. So, the best chance for Brian Kelly’s squad to make the CFP is — unsurprisingly — to go undefeated.

While the SEC West might not be as dominant in 2023 as it has been for the last decade+, running the table in that division is still a formidable challenge. Lane Kiffin’s Rebels come into this weekend’s matchup fresh off of a 24-10 beating at the hands of the Alabama Crimson Tide, so this game has intrigue on a lot of levels.

Obviously, I am going to be interested to see if my preseason CFP picks can all stay alive for another week, but how LSU squares up with Ole Miss should tell us a lot about three of the teams at the top of the SEC West. Is Alabama as bad as they looked against Texas, or as good as they looked against Ole Miss? What would it mean if LSU runs away from the Rebels in blowout fashion? What if they just barely squeak by on Saturday? Would that indicate that the Tide is back to being the king of the West?

All of those questions are on the table this Saturday when LSU and Ole Miss square off from Oxford at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Can the Wolverines get back on track after missing the 2023 NCAA tournament and losing Hunter Dickinson?

As we enter the fall season and college football gets underway, college basketball is right around the corner. As always, to prepare you for the season, Land-Grant Holy Land will be publishing Big Ten Team Previews and Ohio State Basketball Player Previews, starting now with the Team Previews.

Outlook​


It can be rough seas ahead when you lose your top three players on a team that did not make the NCAA tournament. Jett Howard and Kobe Bufkin were first-round picks in the 2023 NBA draft losing star center Hunter Dickinson to the consensus No. 1 preseason team in Kansas.

Now, those three stars are all gone, and the Wolverines will turn to Dug McDaniel, Tarris Reed, Jaelin Llewellyn, and some transfers to get the program back on track. Juwan Howard is a good coach and a solid recruiter, but if he misses the tournament in back-to-back seasons, the fans in Ann Arbor will start to become understandably impatient.

Dickinson, Howard, and Bufkin combined to average 46.7 points per game and 16.3 rebounds per game. They were the only three players to average double figures in scoring, and they averaged 14 or more points per game. They accounted for almost 60 percent of the production of the 2022-23 season, and that is from a team that was barely above .500.

Oliver Nkamhoua could be the x-factor for Michigan. The transfer from Tennessee was a late addition to the team and was a must-get for Howard and his staff. He is a versatile forward who can score at all three levels and rebound well, giving Michigan someone who can come in and start strong. Tray Jackson and Nimari Burnett are solid pieces, but they are not the star that Nkamhoua could be.

George Washington III is the only recruit the Wolverines have coming in. The former Ohio State commit is now heading to Ann Arbor and will look to help sure up the Wolverine’s depth behind Dug McDaniel and Jaelin Llewellyn.

Prediction​


Michigan salvaged a chance at a good season by adding the three players they added through the transfer portal, but all three will need to take a large step in order to help Michigan compete in the conference.

Right now, they do not seem to be a tournament team. The transfers are one thing, but with Llewellyn coming back from an ACL injury and all of the other returners having to step up into larger roles, particularly McDaniel and Reed.

McDaniel was thrown into a role he did not expect last season after Llewellyn was lost for the season in December, and in general, McDaniel played fairly well. Now, he is in a role where he knows exactly what he has to do along with Llewellyn.

Reed was a backup to Dickinson last season and gave the Wolverines good minutes when he was on the floor, but now they will need him to step up into a larger scoring role and become one of the top big men in the country.

It could be a long season for Michigan, but this team still has a lot of talent. The three transfers must all step into big roles immediately, and if Llewellyn comes back healthy, they can play their way into the tournament. A clean slate is not always a bad thing.

Ohio State picked up their recruiting efforts on Wednesday during the off week.

It may be an off week for the Buckeyes on the field, but Wednesday proved to be business as usual for Ohio State. With a staff full of coaches wanting to keep things moving, this week looks like another chance for the recruiting efforts to increase with no game on Saturday.

Whether it be sending out new offers or making the short list for a top target, the Buckeyes are hard at work even on a bit of a slower week as far as on-field prep is concerned.

Buckeyes dish out latest offer in the 2025 class​


With where Ohio State is in the 2024 class, the majority of the attention is being spent on the 2025 cycle. Sure, the Buckeyes have some work to finish up with their 2024 haul, but with only a few spaces left open, the coaches have been able to divert their attention to many of their top targets for what hopefully becomes another top national class when all is said and done.

While several names at each position have already been targeted for some time now, evaluations are still being made by the coaching staff. Wednesday proved that the offers are very much still going out. Taking to Twitter to share the latest in his recruitment, 6-foot-4, 265 pound defensive lineman Nathaniel Marshall announced Ohio State has joined his offer sheet.

The No. 88 player nationally, Marshall is the seventh-best prospect at his position and the third-best player in Illinois in the 2025 class per the 247Sports Composite. Even more highly regarded by 247Sports’ own rankings, seeing the 20-plus offers to his name isn’t a surprise. Programs such as Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon, Texas, and plenty more are already in the fold, so it’s not a shock to see Ohio State enter this recruitment, especially with Marshall being in the Midwest.

Like the 2024 class, the Buckeyes are hopeful they can go into the Chicago area and steal one of the top players not only in the state, but in the country for their defensive line. Being located where he is, it won’t be hard for the Buckeyes to check in on Marshall regularly. Surely the plan now will be to get him on campus sooner rather than later. If all goes as planned, this should be just the beginning of hearing Marshall’s name mentioned when talking Ohio State recruiting.

Ohio State makes the cut for 2025 linebacker ​


If there’s a position of need on the defensive side of the ball in the 2025 class, it’s at linebacker. Graduating two starters at the end of this 2023 season, the Buckeyes will be younger at the spot in 2024 and definitely need to add some depth to their overall group. Several names are already on the short list for the staff, and with James Laurinaitis doing his best work once those prospects are on campus, the efforts are there and will continue to be.

On Wednesday, one of those names popped up when five-star linebacker Nasir Wyatt released his final eight schools, keeping Ohio State in consideration before making a decision. The No. 20 player nationally, Wyatt is the second-ranked edge rusher in the class and the top overall player in California per the 247Sports Composite. At 6-foot-2, 210 pounds though, Wyatt looks to be a linebacker at the next level as he currently plays outside linebacker for his high school team.

Having nearly 30 offers to his name, it’s impressive to get down to just eight schools, and shows Wyatt is serious about going through the process and wanting to narrow things down a bit. The rest of the schools making the cut include Alabama, Texas, Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Tennessee, and Oregon. A typical West Coast kid, the schools to pay close attention to are Oregon and USC, but with how often California kids are leaving the state now, the Buckeyes do have a shot here.

Like several before him, this is the next in line at Mater Dei the Buckeyes would love to land. One of the premier prep programs in the country seemingly every year, Mater Dei continues to churn out elite talent. Ohio State, while not for a lack of trying, has yet to really break through with the school. It won’t be an easy feat by any means, but with this next step the Buckeyes will look to be in the mix for the long haul.
