Mcguff, Jacy Sheldon and Taiyier Parks talk dominant conference win with four games remaining

Throughout the year, Land-Grant Holy Land will be bringing you uncut audio primarily from Ohio State press conferences, but also from individual interview sessions.

On Valentine’s Day night, the Ohio State women’s basketball team had a date with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The same Big Red side that shocked the then No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes three days prior in Lincoln, Nebraska. With an eight-day Buckeyes break looming, and Nebraska on a marquee win high, it was ripe for another upset. It was anything but, with the scarlet and gray winning 80-47.

After the game, head coach Kevin McGuff, guard Jacy Sheldon and forward Taiyier Parks discussed the game with the media.

Coach McGuff talked about defense leading the way from the jump, after a slow start on offense. Plus, that offense picking up, the depth of the Buckeyes to continue piling on Nebraska, and the growing court awareness of sophomore forward Cotie McMahon. Plus, what the team intends to improve during the break.

Sheldon and Parks talk about Parks’ dub chain performance, the reason the team is able to shut out all of the outside noise so well, and a performance season-high 30 forced turnovers team performance.

That and more on the latest Land-Grant Uncut.

Tom Ryan’s squad has just one dual left in the regular season, as they look to reach 15 wins for the first time since 2009-10.

This past Sunday was Senior Day inside Covelli Center, where all in attendance (with the exception of a few Indiana fans) were happy to recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions of wrestlers Sammy Sasso and Nick Boykin, as well as student managers Destinee Fry and Lily Voellm. While none of the four were regular on-mat competitors this season, their positive impact(s) on the program should not be understated.

Grateful the the years these senior athletes and student managers dedicated to Buckeye Wrestling❤️

Especially that of Sasso, Ohio State’s two-time Big Ten Champion whose final season was likely taken away from him when he became the unfortunate victim of a senseless random shooting last August. There is still some hope that Sasso can or will compete again one day, but even if that does not come to fruition, The Savage will always be remembered as a Scarlet and Gray legend.

On Sunday, with Sasso and others watching on, Tom Ryan’s sixth-ranked Buckeyes coasted to a 32-6 dual victory over Indiana, putting a bow on the team’s perfect Big Ten record at home. Their only home loss of the season came all the way back on December 10, to ACC powerhouse Pitt... With a dramatically different lineup than the one OSU has ridden to great success over the past few months, featuring Rocco Welsh (174), Ryder Rogotzke (184), and Nick Feldman (HWT), none of whom participated in the Pitt dual.

Against the Hoosiers, it was once again youth leading the way for Ohio State. Six of the home team’s eight wins were earned by first or second-year Buckeyes, with Dylan D’Emilio (149) and Bryce Hepner (165) – the “old guys” – winning the other two. Feldman, Brendan McCrone (125), Jesse Mendez (133), and Welsh all earned bonus points via major decision, while Nic Bouzakis (133) scored the dual’s only pin/fall. The latter broke a tie with McCrone for the team lead in pins, notching his eighth of the season against Indiana’s Isaac Thornton.

Luke Geog (197) also impressed for the Buckeyes on Sunday, earning his fifth Big Ten win of the season, against just one loss. As did D’Emilio (pictured), who defeated IU’s Graham Rook, ranked No. 14 nationally at 149. Isaac Wilcox (157) was OSU’s only lineup regular to lose, dropping a close 4-2 decision. Gavin Bell filled in at 184 and was defeated by none other than Roman Rogotzke, Ryder’s older brother.

Ohio State is now 14-2 in duals this season, with only one remaining — at Michigan State tomorrow (Friday) night. The 14 team victories are tied for OSU’s most in a single season since 2009-10, when Ryan’s squad went 18-2 in duals. The Buckeyes also won 14 in 2017-18.

Friday’s dual in East Lansing will be Ohio State’s last competition of any kind before the Big Ten Championships begin on March 9. The NCAA Championships then kick off on March 21, meaning the Buckeyes will have plenty of “downtime” to hopefully prepare for a prosperous postseason run. But first, be sure to check out Mendez, Feldman, and others tomorrow night, as they wrap up their regular season on Big Ten Network at 7 p.m. ET.

#2 Purdue at Ohio State, Sunday, February 18, 2024, 1 PM ET, CBS

SHH! IT'S A SECRET. While Chris Holtmann will not be at Ohio State vs. Purdue on Sunday, the 1998-99 Ohio State men's basketball team will. Indeed, the Buckeyes, who won [REDCATED] games and reached the [REDACTED] of the 1999 NCAA Tournament, will be honored when the Buckeyes host the Boilermakers at Value City Arena this weekend.

But shhhhhhhhh!

Don't tell the NCAA about it.

Ohio State can no longer recognize the Final Four team after the school accepted NCAA sanctions for a fallout that led to coach Jim O’Brien's termination in 2004. However, Adam Jardy of The Columbus Dispatch reported Ohio State will honor the 1998-99 team on Sunday for an achievement the NCAA cannot revoke:

As part of its season-long celebration of 25 years of the Schottenstein Center, Ohio State will officially welcome back “The USA Today Coaches Poll No. 4 Team.” It’s not a recognition of a Final Four run that helped put the program back on the national radar, or an acknowledgement of a 27-9 overall record, but it’s a way to give some due to a team went from 8-22 the year before (and 1-15 in the Big Ten) to the Final Four.
George Reese and Scoonie Penn are excited for the event:

“Every time we come into the building people still talk about that team, so why not?” Reese said. “That elephant in the room was always there, like, come on man, we remember it. You see all the stuff the NCAA does, now it’s our time to actually be recognized. The NCAA can’t take that away.”
...
“It’s nice to have something, to be recognized, but it still has a sour taste in my mouth and I’m sure the rest of the guys, coaches, everybody that was a part of what we did that special season feels like that,” Penn said. “The people who were around, they understand, they remember. But what about all these people who became Buckeyes and Buckeye fans these last 22 years that go into the Schottenstein Center and don’t see that? Hopefully those who don’t know, this will help them recognize and understand a little bit better.”
Including family members, “The USA Today Coaches Poll No. 4 Team” will have about 70 representatives on Sunday. Penn told Jardy the players and their loved ones will arrive in Columbus on Saturday, reuniting nearly the entire team for the first time since their postseason banquet in 1999. The team will also have a brunch at the arena before their in-game recognition.

I love this.

Kudos to whomever at Ohio State put this event together for the 1998-99 Buckeyes. Michael Redd, Penn, Jason Singleton, Ken Johnson and Reese are some Ohio State basketball legends and deserve praise for their contributions and performances in one of the best seasons ever for the program. I can't wait to see them receive that praise from Buckeye Nation this weekend.

Re: I love this.
Just sayin': Me too........
