The Buckeyes were busy on Thursday offering new players and making additional visit plans for this weekend.

Some of the better recruiting stories out there involve players who had to work a little harder for the offers they want. When it comes to class of 2027 in-state prospect Reinaldo Perez, the Buckeyes saw enough out of the nearby Columbus Academy product.

A 6-foot-5, 245 pound defensive lineman, Perez is currently the No. 182 player nationally and 21st best player at his position per the 247Sports Composite. Clearly wanting to earn the offer from the Buckeyes, Perez camped multiple times this summer already at Ohio State, putting in the work to be noticed by the coaching staff.

Holding double-digit offers to his name, Ohio State saw enough to get into the mix giving, him the good news on Thursday. Schools such as Arizona State, Florida, and USC are also among the most recent programs to offer.

From here, the Buckeyes shouldn’t have to have many conflicts with getting him to campus. Being that local, Perez is just minutes away from the staff and that should benefit Ohio State’s chances. Building a stronger relationship is up next for Larry Johnson and the rest of the coaches, but this is close enough to the program that you like the chances of him ending up staying close to home come decision time.

Another new offer for the Buckeyes, Ohio State is now in the mix early on for Mississippi native, Travion Washington. A 6-foot-1, 207 pound athlete out of Brandon High School, Washington has only played one year of prep football to date, but nearing double-digit offers to his name this early in his recruitment tells you he’s the real deal.

Unranked due to his class status, schools such as Arkansas, Colorado, Florida State, Mississippi State, and others tell you more are sure to come, and so is a top ranking. The Buckeyes arguably the biggest program to offer thus far, it’s only a matter of time before the other top blue bloods start snooping around.

With an increased presence recruiting Mississippi for the Buckeyes presently, the coaches are looking at the long haul here, and have their next guy worth keeping tabs on. Position coach James Laurinaitis is quickly becoming one of the best at his craft in the college landscape, so right away you have to believe Ohio State will have a real shot here.

Ohio State set to host 2026 four-star edge rusher

A lot can change in just 24 hours, and that it did for the Buckeyes and their pursuit of New Jersey native, Luke Wafle. A recruitment that had been the talk of the week, it was Thursday that Wafle announced his commitment to USC over Ohio State, with Penn State and Texas also at least somewhat in the mix.

An official visit to Ohio State in late May put the Buckeyes in front for the edge rusher, but USC and their NIL pitch took all of the momentum. While many experts thought Ohio State had won Wafle back over on Wednesday night, it gave just enough time for USC to find even more money to make sure they won this commitment in the end.

While it’s a commitment that’s lost, Ohio State’s stance has long been that money can’t be the main priority for the guys they recruit the hardest, and in this case NIL was the primary factor.

Looking elsewhere now, shortly after the Wafle to USC predictions news dropped that Ohio State would be playing host to KJ Ford this weekend for an official visit. Of course, this visit is in direct correlation to the Trojans landing Wafle, as Ford was originally supposed to visit USC this weekend.

Now heading to Columbus, Ohio State will have the chance to show Ford what he can benefit from while being a Buckeye. Being the No. 116 player nationally and 15th best edge rusher in the 2026 class per the 247Sports Composite, the NIL money that would have been reserved for Wafle can be put to good use with Ford.

A class that desperately needs defensive linemen, Ohio State will roll out the red carpet this weekend for sure. Hopefully Ford and the Buckeyes can move quickly with what seems to be a heavy mutual interest.

Quick Hits

  • Traveling with Ford this weekend, high school teammate Landon Barnes will also be making the trek to Columbus. The two were together for the spring game in April, so seeing Barnes and Ford for that matter coming back so soon shows the real interest here in what the Buckeyes have to offer.

The No. 139 player nationally and the 18th best edge rusher in the 2026 class per the 247Sports Composite, package deals are rarely a thing in recruiting, but it never hurts to have familiar faces around when talking about the future.

Luke Wafle and Cincere Johnson are set to announce their college commitments today.

Another busy week for Ohio State’s coaching staff, the midway point through June is here and recruiting continues to be the top priority. Looking to close out the last two weeks with some huge success in their 2026 class, it could start today as multiple commitments are on the brink.

A topic of major interest this week, New Jersey native, Luke Wafle continues to be a theme with his commitment announcement coming later today. A player the Buckeyes have wanted for sometime now, Ohio State has seen a rollercoaster of ups and downs concerning his recruitment as of late, and Thursday they’ll find out if they won out over other serious contenders, mainly USC.

Wafle visited Ohio State officially on May 30 and came away seeing all he needed to in Columbus. Growing optimism that the Buckeyes did enough to put their name atop of the list, it was the more recent visit to USC that snatched all of the momentum per multiple reports. NIL value being the leading factor here, it looked as if the Trojans jumped the Buckeyes as the favorite to land his commitment.

On Wednesday, the momentum swung back in favor of Ohio State, with several predictions submitted in favor of Wafle choosing the Buckeyes. Whether it be from Steve Wiltfong or other national analysts, Wednesday brought multiple bits of news pegging the Buckeyes, but into the later hours of the night, talk continued that USC was still doing what it could to further increase their NIL offer if that’s what it took.

Penn State and Texas also doing their due diligence, the wait will soon be over to see who comes out on top as his commitment is live this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET.

The No. 55 player nationally and the sixth best edge rusher in the 2026 class per the 247Sports Composite, Wafle would give Ohio State their second pledge along the defensive line in a class that really wants that position group to catch fire. Stay tuned, as today could bring not one, but two major defensive additions to this Ohio State recruiting class.

Much like the aforementioned Wafle, Ohio State is hoping to hear good news in their favor today for in-state target Cincere Johnson as well. The No. 71 player nationally and the eighth best at his position per the 247Sports Composite, Ohio State has long been the favorite for the top linebacker.

Not only being from Ohio, but a Cleveland Glenville product, that pipeline leads to the Buckeyes more times than not, and hopefully that continues to be the case. Several crystal ball predictions rolling in on Wednesday, it would be a surprise to see Ohio State not win this battle, but Alabama and Penn State have also heavily been in the mix as a real players for his services.

All signs do point towards the four-star athlete staying close to home joining several others to do the same from his prep program. A 6-foot-3, 240 pound prospect, Johnson is a linebacker at the next level, but with his frame and length, it wouldn’t be a shock at all to see him continue to grow and play a role similar to what CJ Hicks will play this season if he does in fact pick the Buckeyes.

Quick Hits

  • Doing what they have all month long, the staff continued this week to host recruiting prospects from all over the country. The one-day positional camps in the books, this staff will once again focus on visits, and Jaden Carey was a priority on Wednesday, making the trek from Florida.

Another talented St. Thomas Aquinas product, Carey is the No. 346 player nationally and 37th best cornerback in the 2027 class per the 247Sports Composite. Already an Ohio State offer to his name, the Buckeyes are heavily involved in this recruitment and his latest trip is just another chance to further grow their relationship.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DEC 21 CFP First-Round - Tennessee at Ohio State

It’s concerning how expensive Ohio State football tickets have gotten, and relief isn’t coming anytime soon.

From now until preseason camp starts in August, Land-Grant Holy Land will be writing articles around a different theme every week. This week is all about our Biggest Concerns. You can catch up on all of the Theme Week content here and all of our Biggest Concerns here.

The cost of everything continues to rise. While this isn’t breaking news, it is always tough to stomach. Attending an Ohio State football for just one person is expensive enough, I don’t even want to imagine what it would be like for a family of four to attend a Buckeye football game against even just a somewhat decent opponent.

Unfortunately it’s impossible to see the price of Ohio State football tickets doing anything but increasing in the future.

Going to an Ohio State football game shouldn’t be as easy as going to a Miami Hurricanes football game, where you can just show up a couple minutes before a game, plunk down a couple bucks and pretty much get a whole row to yourself just a couple rows from the field.

Going to an Ohio State football game also shouldn’t require taking out a second mortgage on your home. Even though I’m overexaggerating by making those two points, they are closer to reality than we would all like to admit.

The Ohio State athletic department has a tough job when it comes to the price of football tickets. To try and keep them affordable to make sure they are appealing to as many fans as possible, while also trying to maximize profits because expenses are even more out of control now.

Since football is the major breadwinner for the athletic department, Ohio State has to squeeze as much as they can out of every home game to help fund all the other varsity sports at the university. Things are even tougher now because there is also NIL and upgrades that need to be done to Ohio Stadium, which is over 100 years old.

We have already seen a few attempts at adding revenue streams inside Ohio Stadium. Last year the 1922 Club was announced, which will give members a premier gameday destination inside Ohio Stadium. Recently new field level suites in the south end zone were announced, which will force the Ohio State Marching Band to relocate to the north end zone area.

I haven’t seen how much tickets in the new south end zone section will be when they are available starting with the 2026 season, but I imagine they aren’t going to come cheap. “Premium” tickets often are tagged with a dollar amount that includes at least four digits.

Tulsa-Ohio State 2021

Back in 2021 I took my mom, step-dad, and friend of mine to the Tulsa game. Since it was my mom and step-dad’s first Buckeye game I didn’t want to skimp on tickets since I was hoping it would be memorable. I ended up purchasing some B Deck tickets in the north end zone and four tickets ended up being around $200 each after ticket fees, taxes, and all those other surcharges we have to deal with these days. That was only for the Tulsa game, which had one of the lowest crowd turnouts at an Ohio State game in the last 50 years.

By comparison, in 2022 I bought two tickets for a Red Sox/Yankees game in the sixth row in right field on a Saturday night in July for about the same amount per ticket. Baseball’s most historic rivalry shouldn’t cost as much as a game where Ohio State hosts Tulsa.

In a perfect world all tickets would be like when I went to a Minnesota Twins game on a Friday night in August 2023, where we sat in “The Dock” which was a section that was a little overhang in right field. Tickets in that section were $40 AND you got a t-shirt! If you wanted to pay $40 to watch an Ohio State football game they’d probably make you sit on top of Morrill Tower.

2025 NHL Stadium Series - Detroit Red Wings v Columbus Blue Jackets

Earlier this year I went to the Stadium Series game at Ohio Stadium where the Columbus Blue Jackets hosted the Detroit Red Wings. I’m a quarter-season ticket holder for the Blue Jackets, but since this event was at Ohio Stadium the Blue Jackets didn’t really have much to do with ticketing since it was at an Ohio State facility.

Even for C Deck tickets, I paid over $100 each when I purchased them months in advance. Don’t get me wrong, it was definitely worth it since it was a once in a lifetime event, it was just crazy to me to be paying that much to sit in C Deck.

These days it is easier to pass on attending Ohio State football games since the viewing experience is so much better at home. No lines for the bathroom, food and drinks that aren’t ridiculously priced, and I can flip around to other games during commercial breaks and halftime.

I do have a friend that has season tickets who took me to the Indiana game in 2022 and Michigan State game in 2023, and I’ve taken him to Blue Jackets games in those years as a thank you. It’s obvious I’m making out better on the deal since tickets to the Blue Jackets are only a fraction of what he is likely spending for his Ohio State season tickets.

I’m sure I sound like a huge cheapskate but since I’ll soon be turning 40 I’m fully embracing the “get off my lawn” stage of life. Give me a night game and I’d gladly pay hundreds of dollars to see Texas or Penn State this year in Columbus. Unfortunately those are the prices that we’ll likely see for a late afternoon game against Grambling or a night game against Ohio.

When you see those fans that are paying to see the premium games, it’s no wonder why the atmosphere is lacking at Ohio Stadium these days. The crowd consists of more and more rich people who have no interest in making any noise.

Good luck to athletic director Ross Bjork since you have to try and balance ticket prices to maximize profits while also keeping fans happy. At least he has plenty of experience since previously he had to deal with the oil tycoon boosters at Texas A&M before coming to Ohio State.

Bjork has done some creative things so far but they all benefit the upper class of Buckeye fans. For the common fan like you and I, things are going to get worse before they get better when it comes to accessibility to Ohio State football tickets.
