Dust has settled on the new coaches.
Pantoni indicated all 11 are out on the road recruiting today.

I submit the next thing on the agenda is the status of the 2 in subject title.

I believe the have until 1/17 to declare for draft.

We sometimes discount the guys that have been in the program and focus on potential recruits or the portal.

Having these 2 back would be huge in terms of next years outlook.

Maybe Dewand even more as our depth at T isn't great.

I tend to think both will be back but have no inside bonafides.

I personally don’t think either make or break next season. Dawand obviously provides solid pass protection but lacks mobility in run blocking and the screen game. The biggest issue, as you correctly state, is depth if he leaves. I think Paris Johnson will be a better all-around tackle than Dawand and he’s clearly going to kick-out to LT to replace NPF IMO. If Dawand sticks around he’s RT. If he declares for draft it likely goes to Donovan Jackson or Enockk Vimahi who will have to step up but has been in program several years. I still think it’s essential to land a portal transfer at OT for depth. No matter what, I’m cautiously optimistic we have a more well rounded unit next year on O-line instead of elite pass blocking and poor run blocking. It’s only rational to anticipate the pass blocking to come down a bit but the run blocking can only improve. It will be good to see some maulers at LG and RG.

I dissent on Dewand's value in the run game and his potential for next year.
He is a road grader. If he gets his paws on you he will move you.
If anything he struggles v speed rushers in the pass game.
I think with another year of reps, conditioning - he is a lock first round pick in 23.
I think he was a pleasant surprise last year.

As for a portal T, unless Dewand leaves I don't think we are an attractive option for any top end T.
Portal kids are going to want a path to playing time.
Our first team is set if Dewand returns. And I prefer he returns over taking our chances in the portal.

Zach is what?
IMO Ready to go NFL this year... His combine numbers will get him drafted.. Would he go higher in 2023 if he stays... yes

.. Dewand's value .. He is a road grader. If he gets his paws on you.
That's my key point... IF he gets his paws on you... LBs at times were able to avoid him completely... which bottled Henderson up... which is why IMO he needs work on foot work and speed
There is a video clip of a Henderson run play (vs Michigan or Utah).. Dewand whiffs on the LB so bad he loops back and crashes into another OL & Henderson...
That play makes me think he needs another year here

Zach is ready to get drafted, sure. Zach is not ready to play in the NFL.

Does that change after a year?

He only has to do better than 3 fucking sacks to show an increase in his on field performance.

My personal opinion is that Dewand is the one that should go because he isn't going to get any smaller or more agile in a year. He's too fucking big and slow to be a good run blocker. He's a pass pro machine. Neither is going to change.

My thoughts on Harrison I've shared before. I just can't get my head around any NFL talent evaluator being so enamored with combine numbers that they don't watch any tape at all. I mean none because if they do watch any moment of tape at all they will see those physical skills not be turned into on the field production at almost any point, in any film, of any game he's played in for three straight years.

If they are drafting for a 7th round, first guy off the bus then he's got a shot. If they want a DE who can turn his freakish speed for his size into sacks, then they are shit out of luck. He can't do it in college, what makes anyone think he can do it in the NFL?

Dawand is probably maxxed out as a prospect. I don't see what coming back does for him

Zach is another story. Yes, we assume he will have the measurables that might get him noticed at the combine, but he's as raw as they come. Has he ever put 2 consecutive good games together? I can't recall any. Occasionally I've seen his athleticism allow him to disrupt a play or get to the QB, but 90% of the time you don't notice he's on the field. Whether that has been a Zach thing or a coaching/scheme thing I don't know. Yes, players get drafted based on combine numbers. But the money is in rounds 1-2 and you don't see very many combine freaks go in that range. Some, yes; but not many. Zach has the potential to really blow up this year in Knowles' scheme. The DE's at oOSU had 10.5 (a freshman) and 9 sacks last season. He can go now and probably get drafted in day 2 or 3, or he can come back and work his tail off and potentially see his stock soar. He does not have the film/production to be much more than a mid to late round pick. He has a bad day at the combine/pro day, he isn't getting a sniff. If he puts up double-digit sacks, he could eclipse his 3 year totals so far...

"Dawand is probably maxxed out as a prospect. I don't see what coming back does for him"

I consider you a top shelf poster but with all due respect I strongly disagree.

We are talking about a kid who was primarily a basketball player growing up and has been in college 3 years. With significant reps only last year.
I posit another year of reps and dedication in the weight room could unlock a beast.
I see him as a potential first rounder in 23. Potential all-american.
Weren't his PFF grades stellar last year?
And he was still very raw and a tad sloppy in terms of his body.
I think he is the definition of "potential" given his size, relative inexperience, and athleticism.

Zach is who he is.
Solid, but not great, player. Strong enough, fast enough, big enough w/ a good motor.
However, he's slow at the snap and doesn't have good short-space agility ("bend").
I don't see that changing in the next year.

Dawand could improve his draft stock if he drops weight and improves physically. If he's willing/able to do this, he should come back.
If not, he's unlikely to change next year.

If they were my kids, I would tell Zach to leave and Dawand to stay. Since they are not my kids and I'm a tOSU fan, I prefer they stay.
