I'll never forget it, in my folks living room. My brother on the couch to my left, my father and I standing up pretty much the entire 4th Qtr.

Pass goes up and when it hits gamble and bounces off his hands I just sunk to the floor. The second my father saw it he screamed PI... actually I remember his exactly words. "Interference? Jesus Christ that was rape!!"

When that final whistle blew it was actually silent in my house for a moment. I looked at my dad, he looked back... "no way we just won" - then we proceeded to go freakin crazy.

I thought the same thing. I was like OSU will win this. It was the right call.

Miami should have been [censored]ed off more on a certain play on that same drive. They let OSU complete a 4th and long pass (4th and 15 or something like that). If anything, they should have been [censored]ed more on the execution on that play. That was the national championship right there.

That Miami team was one of the more talented teams in the past few decades along with the 1986 Miami team. It is safe to say they could have won 8-9 championships from 83-02 if they had a few things go their way. That is just flat out crazy.

I understand this has nothing to do with the question bbb asked, but in retrospect those were probably the two most talented teams that have played for the NC since the BCS was formed. Many solid pros from both teams, and the game was extremely well played. A true classic.

It points out, for me, just how much talent Maurice Clarett has wasted. Of all the great players on the field that night, none seemed to me to be a better football player than MoC.

My reaction to the penalty in OT during the 2003 Fiesta Bowl? Gee, which penalty do you mean?

Flags thrown on tOSU in the OTs:

1) 1st OT - 2nd and goal for Miami - PI on Will Allen, declined since Winslow scored
2) 1st OT - false start on Hartsock TE on 2nd and 5
3) 1st OT - false start on tOSU LG on XP attempt
4) 2nd OT - incidental (5-yard) facemask on Fox tackling Winslow on the 10 and a half yard line; despite Dan Fouts arguing for the more severe face mask call on his buddy's kid; a 15-yard call would have gained Miami about 9 inches of FG position (which was made a moot point on the next play)
5) 2nd OT - PI on Gamble covering Andre Johnson running a slant just over the goal line - ball placed at the 2-yard line by rule

Flags thrown on Miami in the OTs:

1) PI and holding both indicated on the same play by Terry Porter, only PI was announced since that was the more severe call. And the ref on camera in the front corner of the end zone closer to the play was correctly doing his job by watching the inside receiver on that side of the field (Michael Jenkins running a slant)


tOSU went into the game with only 5.2 penalties for 40.2 yards per game, which was the 11th fewest in the nation.

Miami went into the game averaging 85.4 yards per game on 9.8 penalties, the third most flags per game in the nation.

Only one call seems to matter to folks, though, in large part to Dan Fouts ignoring the fact that Terry Porter signaled both defensive holding and PI, instead just biasedly repeating 'Bad call'.

Any time I see Dan Fouts on tv or hear him on the radio I still get upset. If he were a real unbiased announcer, he would have waited for the replay and seen that pass interference and holding had both occurred. Instead, he tarnishes (because he is [censored] [censored]) one of the greatest college football games and one of Ohio State's greatest victories ever in the eyes of millions of people nationally because he couldn't keep his trap shut and watch the replay. Also, I was still intensely angry from that missed holding call on Miami in the fourth quarter. That was the true horrendous call (or non-call) in an otherwise great game.

Also, if I remember correctly, 13 players from that Miami roster were drafted in the first round of the NFL draft. That is insane.

After all these years, the play that bothers me the most was the "no catch" called on a Krenzel to Gamble completion where Gamble beat 2 holds from his defender and caught the ball. Honestly, even when I watch it now, knowing damn well how it'll turn out, that play still pisses me off. Shouldn't have even made it to OT.

I was still pissed about the no call on the holding and catch in bounds by Gamble. Get either one of those calls -- on the same play -- right and the game never gets to OT.

Call the block in the back on the punt return and there's a good chance it doesn't get to OT then either.

You can't say that with 2:43 left. Maybe they give you the first down on the hold and he throws a pick six the next play.

But it sure as Hell increases the odds it never gets to OT. :biggrin:

Dan Fouts's lack of professionalism in that game was astounding. The fact that by the end he was all but openly rooting for the team of his friend's son while collecting a paycheck is pathetic in my eyes. The worst blown call of the night wasn't on the field, it was on the mic. He managed to stain one of the greatest games ever played. If anybody should be ashamed of their performance that night, it's Fouts and not Terry Porter.

Oh, and what was my reaction? My roommates and I ran from our apartment on Highland all the way down 8th screaming OH-IO until we got to High Street where we started high fiving cops, hugging fans, and kissing girls like it was V Day.

There was 2:18 left at the end of the Gamble play, and Miami had 1 timeout left.
