Youngstown State Garners Fourth-Seed; Hosts James Madison on ESPN2
Youngstown ? The Youngstown State football team, the 2006 Gateway Football Conference Regular-Season Champions, earned the No. 4 seed and will host James Madison in the first round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship, Saturday, Nov. 25, at Stambaugh Stadium, the NCAA announced Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
The Penguins (9-2) earned the Gateway's automatic bid by going 6-1 in league play and are making their 11th appearance in the playoffs and first since 2000.
James Madison (9-2) earned one of eight at-large bids and ranked seventh in the latest SportsNetwork Top 25 poll.
This will be the fourth meeting between Youngstown State and James Madison but the first in the postseason. YSU owns 2-1 advantage in the all-time series. The last time these two schools met was during a the 1992 season when JMU came away with a 52-49 victory at Stambaugh Stadium. YSU defeated the Dukes, 28-21, in 1991 at Stambaugh, and 31-15, in Harrisonburg, Va., in 1990
Youngstown State has won four national titles (1991, 1993, 1994, 1997) and two national runners-up (1992, 1999) and owns a Division I Football Championship playoff record of 23-6.
