Totally agreed and great analysis. Here are my concerns (remember I am a fan of both YSU and Ohio State).
YSU's strategy was to chew up clock for 2 reasons:
#1. Keep the offense off the field as much as possible.
#2. Shorten the number of snaps to keep the YSU athletes as fresh as possible having 22 scholarship disadvantage.
Most FCS teams run out of depth between the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
While Ohio State's receiving core is the absolute best in the country, it's the defense that is concerning. I stated earlier that YSU is big on the OL 6'6 and 305 across the OL. I expected some success for them there......But this is what's concerning:
YSU in Q3 and bleeding into Q4 had the following drives:
1. 11 plays 40 yards 7:36 interception
2. 3 plays 7 yards 2:21 Punt
3. 6 plays 28 yards 4:08 Punt
And Q4 was relatively even:
In Q4 Ohio State took the ball on a 13 play 81 yard drive and YSU forced a turnover on downs.
YSU responded with a 10 play 89 yard drive that also ended in downs.
That's playing relatively even, late in the game. I wasn't expecting that, and it has me concerned.
While I believe that YSU in underrated at the FCS level, they were running the ball off tackle and converting 3rd and medium and 3rd and short late in the game.
That shouldn't happen late in games against an FCS team with a scholarship disadvantage.
Ohio State would have covered the spread easily if they could have gotten more stops in the second half. Only scoring 7 in the second half is also an issue. But was it the inconsistent offense or the defense that wasn't getting off the field?
The final score isn't indicative of the trouble YSU gave Ohio State. I want to see Ohio State and YSU in their respective playoff systems. But this is concerning at a minimum.
That's my take after watching the game for a second time.
I will have to go back and watch Simmons, every time I noticed him it was not in a good way and I was trying to keep an eye on him (easier said than done during a live game).Bolded a few I don’t agree with.
I watched Simmons all game and other than the penalties he did great in pass pro. Just has got to stop the penalties. Very talented kid and seriously might move better than PJ. Just needs to keep his hands inside.
IMO you got the wrong guy. It’s Larry Johnson.
Everyone doesn’t want to say it but Larry has lost two steps with his recruiting and it’s now bleeding into the games. Knowles went from “we need less rotation” to “oh I love the rotation”. All the while Day is stating we need to stop rotating as much (kindly). IMO, to have unity everyone is stating they love the rotation now. However, the DL is being treated like a separate entity than the defense and that’s bull shit.
The way I’m reading this? The defensive line isn’t producing. If they were we are off the field 75% of the time. That’s on LJ not Knowles.
No one wants to blame LJ and I get it because he’s been the best. However he’s not the best right now and it’s showing.
The run D was also my concern, and we haven't faced a really good RB on a good team yet...Here are my concerns (remember I am a fan of both YSU and Ohio State).
