Andy Staples understands-

OSU may not get further penalties, but it already got hammered

Judging by the brevity of the meeting -- USC's hearing took three days; Ohio State's took about four hours -- that strategy worked. Though a July 13 letter from the NCAA's enforcement staff to the Committee on Infractions reveals that the NCAA will keep digging at additional allegations of impropriety, Ohio State may have dodged serious sanctions from the violations that stuck the first time around.
Because of that, everyone outside Columbus will say the Buckeyes got off light. They'll say the NCAA allowed Ohio State to skate because it is a favored program.
That simply isn't correct.
Even if the COI doesn't strip the Buckeyes of a single scholarship, Ohio State got hammered. How? Because this scandal forced Ohio State to jettison Jim Tressel.

On the other hand, don't say Ohio State came out without a scratch. The Buckeyes will move on with another coach, but the odds suggest that coach won't succeed like Tressel did. Wins and Big Ten titles were as certain as the sunrise under Tressel. They aren't anymore.
No matter what the COI decides, Ohio State got creamed. The hammer fell Friday when a man who dominated college football was reduced to just another guy at the valet stand asking for directions to the Interstate.

Yahoo

Smith told The Associated Press earlier this week that the investigations into the players? actions and those of Tressel have cost Ohio State?s athletic department about $800,000 so far. Records released by the university Friday showed how some of the money was spent. Ohio State paid $270,000 to a New York PR firm to help it manage publicity stemming from the scandal, plus another $162,000 to a Kansas firm that specializes in NCAA compliance consulting.

IMHO, Not enough bang for the Bucks!

The Story Highlights tell it all:

  • Losing coach Jim Tressel is stiffer penalty than probation, loss of scholarships
  • Tressel went 9-1 against Michigan and won seven Big Ten titles in 10 seasons
  • Ultimately, program was bigger than coach and OSU threw Tressel under bus

Just noting that the link to the NCAA and tOSU documents associated with this case now includes the letter the NCAA sent to Gee last week, which discussed procedural issues for today's meeting in Indianapolis.

It also includes the NCAA letter of July 13th/14th (I've seen copies of the letter with each date), in which they talked about the fact that the investigation was still ongoing. Today the Dispatch reported that the issue has now been addressed.

A July 13 letter from NCAA Director of Enforcement Stephanie J. Hannah to the infractions committee noted that one unnamed issue remained to be investigated. Ohio State officials say that has now been addressed.

Cont'd ...
Those, and all other documents associated with the case may be found in the link at the end of post #1 in this thread. And here for convenience.

Let me ax y'all a question.

As it stands today - meaning nothing new comes out or blows up - what do you think will happen regarding sanctions/penalties?

NOT what you want to happen or think should happen, but what you think will happen.

Do you think the NCAA will accept the self-imposed penalties as is, or add to them and if so, how much?

I'll hang up and listen.

I think, and from what it sounds like is likely to happen, that nothing much more is going to be levied. They may throw in some token schollie reductions, but sounds like they're pretty satisfied with what tOSU has done. I mean, really, it's pretty significant. People just don't seem to recognize it because the media has worked them into a lather about bowl-bans and whatnot, but, we've lost a legendary coach, a Heisman Trophy candidate QB, three of our best players for 5 games, two others, vacated the wins, and are paying back bowl royalties. I don't know what more people could want given the "crimes" were Tressel-centric and he was summarily dismissed in response...and has owned up to his mistakes.

I know a lot of people, even some in Buckeye Nation, want to vilify the man, but I think he has a large part in how tOSU is going to fare here. Yes, he has ultimately been responsible for this mess. But, I think he has owned it, agreed to step down to prevent further harm, and genuinely does love Ohio State. I think he had a lapse in judgment, but without knowing all the details, nor his thought process, I harbor no ill-will towards him. He's done a lot of great things for Ohio State and Ohio as a whole, and I think, given time, history will be very kind to The Senator. I doubt we, or anybody else in the B1G, will ever see a run of success like we've enjoyed under the sweatervest.
