On a "broader picture" perspective, the most intriguing facet of this new system is the use of the "Cell" PowerPC chip. A chink in the Intel/AMD x86 architecture, and this time one that may grow.

yeah.. we knew it would be going with the powerpc... not a big deal, as this wouldn't make me go out and buy a mac because of the processor...

I'm more enthused about the PS3's processor... that's something special.

not as clear cut as you say

Some interesting next-gen gossip has been sent my way by a reliable source. As we approach E3, the specs for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are becoming more known among the developers, spurring some major chest thumping and “My CPU is bigger than your CPU” talk.

The consensus among these learned types is that the two systems have comparable GPUs despite using different companies (ATI and NVidia), but that the CPUs are a completely different story.

Word from the geek is that the PS3’s CPU is about three times faster than the Xbox 360’s CPU. While this seems like a clear cut victory for Sony, it does little to end the constant debate about which system will be able to provide better games. The problem with Sony’s super-fast CPU is that not all of its power may actually be usable in games. Bottom line: There could be a lot of extraneous horsepower under the PS3’s hood that’s mainly for show, not actual gaming.

All I know is that the X-box is a far superior piece of hardware compared to the PS2, so I have confidence that Microsoft will continue to impress. I love the fact that they are pushing the HD portion of the games. On-line play, forget about it, X-box hands down.

Funny, these pics were snuck out of a "quiet" display of the xbox........Guess the guy had a hidden cam or something on him :) I mean this was a while ago, before the pics and such were released.

Dude what are you talking about... They just released that the PS3 engine will be "3 times" superior to the Xbox. :P

But I see what you're saying. My superior hardware is three times less adequate than other crappy hardware...

Hands down, its going to be PS3. Sony has been consistently churning out a greater variety of titles, and they will rock the gaming industry. What can I say, I just love dual analog, r2/l2, r3/l3 buttons. Plus I like sports games better on the Playstations. I dont know, I could never get used to the Xbox being a sports gaming machine.

If your "sports gaming experience" on Xbox was NCAA, then you got a really jaded perspective, as they decided not to program when they released those ported versions. When playing something like madden, not only does it look nicer but it runs a lot better... especially in that saving and loading usually takes 1-4 seconds rather than 10-25 for taht stupid memory card which fills up super quickly (whereas you have to try incredibly hard to fill up an xbox). Or when playing MVP Baseball 2005 for PS2, it looks worse than teh 2004 version for Xbox. Play splinter cell and say they compare.

I realize the PS2 is a lot older but there is no comparison outside of preferring the controllers.

We'll see what the next consoles are like. Both are pushing them hard to get them out earlier than expected, so that means there will be bugs or at least shortcuts.

The PS3 will NOT be 3x superior. The guy who runs the show over at Sony specifically said it is a home entertainment piece first and a gaming machine second. If I were a Sony fan this would not please me all that much.

I had both the x-box and the ps2 and have no vested interest as to which one I wanted to use other than I wanted the best games and best performance. Well, when Halo came out, I tried the x-box and loved it. It loaded faster, it had a hard drive, I could rip MP3's onto the hard drive. It had a built in ethernet card, it's graphics and frame rates were awesome, and it had the games that I like to play. I just think x-box did it better, we'll see which is better this time around(especially since I like on-line gaming, x-box killed sony in that area).<!-- / message -->

He was kidding to a degree, thanks to the :-p at the end of that sentence.

People should not underestimate how successful MS will be in bringing us an all-inclusive online experience via the xbox. With their expansive experience and relationships/ownership of key players in the media and internet world, the sky is the limit for Gates' dream. And it seems that he is willing to pay for the entire sky in order to accomplish his goal.
