Columbus (Ohio) Marion Franklin quarterback/athlete Verlon Reed attended Ohio State's Advanced Camp June 26. Reed worked out with the quarterbacks the first half of the camp and with the defensive backs the second half.
The Buckeyes have been interested in Reed as a potential safety, though they have not offered him a scholarship.
The 6-foot-2 and 185-pound Reed has offers from Toledo, Syracuse, Kent State and Bowling Green. He says Toledo is his leader and he plans to visit the Rockets July 17.
"They run the 'spread' offense," Reed said. "That would be good for me."
Reed said he would definitely be open to playing safety in college if the Buckeyes were to offer.
Reed has two favorites
Though his team was defeated by Columbus (Ohio) Brookhaven 23-21 on Saturday, quarterback Verlon Reed (Columbus, Ohio/Marion Franklin) had a solid game. Reed threw for a touchdown and rushed for one, while also playing in the Marion Franklin secondary.
The 6-2, 185-pounder is being recruited as a quarterback for the most part, though Ohio State has talked with him about playing defensive back.
"I have four (scholarship) offers," Reed said. "Bowling Green, Toledo, Kent State and Syracuse have offered. I'd say Toledo and Bowling Green are my leaders. I've been to those two so I like them best."
Reed said he plans to visit Syracuse as well, most likely on an official visit.
"I'll wait until after the season to pick a college," he said.
Reed busy with visits
Quarterback Verlon Reed (Columbus, Ohio/Marion Franklin) made an unofficial visit to Ohio State on Sept. 12 and attended the Ohio State-USC game. Reed plans to attend the Boise State at Bowling Green game this weekend.
"I'll also go to a Cincinnati game, but I don't know when," Reed said. "And I might go to a Toledo game."
Reed said he will likely make an official visit to Toledo the weekend of Oct. 10 and will probably make an official visit to Bowling Green sometime in December. He has scholarship offers from those two as well as Kent State.
Verlon Reed ran for 212 yards and three touchdowns, the defense gave up 86 yards, and host Marion-Franklin roughed up Eastmoor Academy 18-0 last night in a steady drizzle.
"Not everybody gets a second chance in life, let alone football," Reed said. "We're fortunate. But we never gave up as a team. We have the players and the coaches to win, and we just had to keep fighting. The seniors called a team meeting and said for everybody to get it off your chest. We had to get back to where we were."
Reed made everything a lot easier by running for touchdowns of 4, 28 and 39 yards and intercepting a pass.
When Eastmoor Academy was flying to the ball trying to get a turnover, Reed locked up the victory with the longest of his touchdowns on a draw with 3:44 left in the fourth quarter. He faked out two linebackers and outran the secondary.
"I'm not a smart coach, but I'm not stupid, either," Haffele said. "I know to get Verlon the ball so he can make plays."

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Andrew Howdyshell of Olentangy Orange is stood up by a group of Marion-Franklin tacklers in a Division II regional semifinal.
Dehydrated from a lingering stomach virus, Marion-Franklin quarterback Verlon Reed spent yesterday morning in a hospital with an IV tube stuck in an arm.
He then attended classes in the afternoon so that he could be eligible for a Division II regional semifinal game against Olentangy Orange.
Thanks to excellent blocking from the offensive line and dazzling plays from his backs and receivers, Reed completed 12 of 23 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 81 yards and a score on 12 attempts.
"I've felt terrible the last couple days, but there was no way I was going to let that stop me in a game that meant so much to our team," Reed said. "I knew we could come in and score some points on this team as long as everybody did their jobs and executed things the way we practiced them."
