WR Verlon Reed (transfer to Findlay)

Football: Marion-Franklin 31, Brookhaven 24

. . .
Quarterback Verlon Reed got the winning drive started with a 34-yard run to the 26 on a scramble.
. . .
Reed threw touchdown passes of 44 yards to Nate Spears and 15 yards to Travone Youngblood to give the Devils a 17-10 lead with 8.9 seconds left in the third quarter.

?We came together as a family in the locker room at halftime,? Reed said. ?We fought. That?s what is going to happen when you work hard in practice. Every day after practice, we stay late to work on the passing game. They have a great run-stopping defense, and we had to be patient.?

Marion-Franklin QB sets example on and off field

Marion-Franklin quarterback Verlon Reed has thrown for 1,335 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also has run for 1,191 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Looking one squarely in the eyes, Verlon Reed exudes the calmness and confidence of a man several years his senior.

It was his quarterback's poise, along with a knapsack of special gifts, that prompted Marion-Franklin coach Brian Haffele to predict a victory in an opening-round playoff game at undefeated Louisville, a favorite in Division II.

Behind Reed, the eighth-seeded Red Devils shocked Louisville, then defeated Olentangy Orange and City League power Brookhaven to reach a state semifinal.

Marion-Franklin (11-2) will face Cincinnati Winton Woods (11-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Centerville with a trip to Massillon riding on the outcome.

"You've absolutely got to have a quarterback who's a leader if you hope to beat those kinds of teams and make a legitimate run at the state championship," Haffele said. "Verlon is a special kid, not only because of his talents but because he can get his teammates to listen to him, believe him and follow him.
Reed has completed 87 of 187 passes for 1,335 yards and 16 touchdowns and has rushed for a team-high 1,191 yards (a 7.1-yard average) with 16 touchdowns. He also has two interceptions at safety and averages 35.2 yards per punt.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder remains open to college offers. He has December visits scheduled to Toledo and Bowling Green. Kent State and Syracuse also have shown interest. But the catch for more prestigious programs is his insistence on being recruited as a quarterback.

"I'd like to go somewhere that will give me a shot to play the position I want," he said, "and getting on the field early and being an asset to my team is very important, too. I've got a lot of things to think about."

Nightmare night on defense dooms Marion-Franklin

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
. . .
Verlon Reed, who turned in an otherwise magnificent performance, was intercepted, fumbled and launched a punt that was blocked during the seven-minute stretch. It turned a 21-21 tie into a 42-21 deficit.

"We knew going in that we were going to have to score a lot of points to beat them," Reed said. "Those three turnovers killed us, and I'll take full blame for those."

Reed, a Division I prospect being scouted by Ohio State, ran for 204 yards and three touchdowns in 14 carries and passed for 213 yards and two more scores, but it wasn't enough to keep up with Winton Woods (12-2) and quarterback Dominique Brown.

Great visit to Toledo this weekend, UT offer is for QB and he is interested... Wants a shot at QB wherever he goes but is open to other positions as well... Ohio State offer is as a QB as well... No plans on committing until he takes all 5 OVs... Depth charts are not a concern and he's not afraid to compete with anyone...

OSU gets commitment from QB Reed (Blogging the Buckeyes)

OSU gets commitment from QB Reed

Verlon Reed, a dual-threat quarterback from Columbus Marion-Franklin High School, committed to Ohio State this morning.
Reed said he chose OSU over Toledo and Bowling Green. He was blown away on his official visit last weekend.
"It's everything I expected, it's a home inside a home," he said of the feeling he had on his visit. "It's a dream come true, something I wanted to do my whole life."
Rivals.com rates Reed as a three-star player, rated the No. 61 prospect in Ohio. The Buckeyes already have a quarterback in their 2010 class, Taylor Graham of Wheaton, Ill.
Last season, Reed led the Red Devils to an 11-3 record and a berth in the Division II state semifinals. He rushed for 1,395 yards and 19 TDs and passed for 1,548 yards and 18 TDs.
There has been some speculation that Reed (6-2, 185) might switch positions in college, but he said OSU coaches have told him he will get a legitimate shot at quarterback.
"I like competition, I don't want anything given to me," he said.
Reed is the 15th member of the 2010 class, which is expected to number 20 by signing day.
