On this day in history ... the San Francisco 49ers sent a fifth round pick to the Miami Dolphins in return for wide receiver/kick returner Ted Ginn Jr. The response on Niners Nation was mostly positive, with folks hoping that he was brought in more for a kick returner than a receiver, which more or less turned out to be the case. I say more or less because the 49ers actually had him in on quite a few offensive plays, but he really didn't produce much in that regard. Still, a returner was a huge need going into 2010, and most fans crossed that off the list when Ginn came in.

As I said earlier, he didn't produce much on offense, catching twelve passes for 163 yards and a touchdown. Some thought he would excel as a deep threat, but that simply wasn't the case. Oddly enough, the 49ers actually used him a go-to guy on shorter routes on third down and things like that, with predictable results. Will he always have potential on offense? Yes, he will, but it's probably been too long to seriously hope for that now. Let's open and close that book where it's at. Make the jump to go over Ginn's production.

Star-divide

But as a returner, Ted Ginn Jr. was above average - at least on punt returns. If you needed a reminder, in 2009 the 49ers had a 4.4 average on punt returns, good for last in the league. Ted Ginn came in and improved that to 11.8, good for seventh in the NFL. That's twenty-five places the team moved up, an unquestionable increase. On punts, I was hoping for more explosiveness out of Ginn, but if you can at least be consistent, that's good enough for me. Ginn remains a potential weapon in that regard.

The kickoff average did go down a little, as the 49ers were 23rd in the league with a 21.8 average in 2009, while in 2010, they were ranked 30th in the league with a 19.5 average. In 2010 though, the team did end up having nine more returns in the previous year, so there's more room for error in that regard. The biggest thing to note about the kickoff returns is the fact that the 49ers' unit as a whole significantly regressed. Over a short period of time, the 49ers lost Jeff Ulbrich, Donald Strickland, Michael Robinson and Scott McKillop, all excellent special teamers. The guys they brought in just were not that good, and Robinson was sorely missed.

Q: Who will emerge as the 49ers third receiver? Ronald Johnson would be my bet... (Jeremy King)

My response: Delanie Walker.

With a more sophisticated passing game, I expect the 49ers to make better use of Crabtree, Josh Morgan and tight end Vernon Davis. But the one player I envision benefitting most is No. 2 tight end Delanie Walker. The 49ers should do a much better job of isolating Walker in mismatches.

OK, I know you were talking about the third wide receiver. I'm not 100-percent sure that Ted Ginn makes the team. But, right now, I'd consider him the favorite to be the third receiver to begin the 2011 season. Sure, Johnson is an option, as is Kyle Williams.

Ted Ginn: Ginn is one of several 49ers who had already spent time with Smith this offseason prior to the offensive minicamp. I asked Smith who stood out in the sessions, and he pointed to the wideouts, including Ginn, who were able to soak up everything he threw at them. Smith sounded very optimistic about the group as a whole. The question for Ginn this season is whether he'll have a more expanded role as a receiver than he did under Singletary. Ginn, who caught at least 34 passes in each of his three seasons in Miami, had only 12 last year to go along with one receiving touchdown.

19 Ginn Jr., Ted, WR - He may have been the most consistent WR in training camp. He also promises to be the team's primary kick and punt returner. Heading into his contract year ...

Wide receivers: See today’s story for more on this unit. But a brief recap: I think Edwards is an undisputed, No. 1-type wide receiver. He’ll likely start alongside Joshua Morgan. Michael Crabtree will likely miss his third exhibition season (this time with a left foot injury) so it is hard to guess how much Jim Harbaugh is going to want from Crabtree the first couple weeks of the regular season. Ted Ginn has been getting a ton of first-team reps, and although he’s had some ups and downs with his hands, he is a legitimate option, and his bigger value is on punt returns. The fifth receiver slot likely will go to Kyle Williams, although Ronald Johnson is also making an OK bid for it.

Ted Ginn Jr. He drops at least one pass per practice, and it seems like his best role for a NFL would be as a kickoff returner. But with kickoffs routinely sailing deep into endzones this year due to the rule changes, a good kickoff returner seems like an unnecessary luxury. Ginn needs to show he can be a valuable slot receiver, and right now Joshua Morgan and Kyle Williams look like better slot options.

would someone please link the video from OSU-scUM game when Ginn returned the punt 82 yards?? It was Braylon Edwards at gunner on the punt team (thank you, Lloyd Carr) who tried to get a hand on TG and completely whiffed.

I could watch that all day, but then, I don't have much of a life.

Ted Ginn Discusses The Wide Receiver Position In The 49ers System
Dave_tiny by David Fucillo on Sep 8, 2011

Ted Ginn Jr. took a few minutes to chat with CSN Bay Area yesterday about preparing for the season and the work the wide receivers have done thus far in training camp (h/t to Drew for finding this video). The highlight had to be Anthony Dixon walking by behind Ginn and letting the audience know how he felt. He certainly does enjoy himself.

Ginn didn't have a ton of specifics, but it was interesting to hear him discuss how the receivers have been practicing a bit at all the positions. Ideally the team would be able to create a whole host of mismatches each week and moving the receivers between the various roles on the field would help with that.

It will be interesting to see what kind of role the 49ers have in mind for Ginn. He has dealt with some drops in the past but it sounds like he really impressed the coaching staff in training camp. They have him listed as a sort of co-starter with Braylon Edwards opposite Josh Morgan. We don't really know what this means with Michael Crabtree healthy again. This Sunday will give us an idea of the plan, but given the limited practice time for Crabtree, I'm not sure if we'll be able to fully lock into the team's strategy.

Check out the video after the jump and head over to CSN Bay Area to view more 49ers video.

Ted Ginn Takes A Pay Cut
According to a league source, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ted Ginn agreed earlier this week to reduce his 2011 base salary.

Selected with the 9th overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins and traded to the 49ers in April of 2010, Ginn had two years and $4.02 million remaining on his six-year, $21.827 million rookie contract.

Ginn agreed to reduce a 2011 base salary that had escalated to $2,218,750 down to $1 million for the upcoming season. Ginn's salary had increased from $1,393,750, and the 26-year-old does have the ability to earn $400,000 in undisclosed incentives.

Also, as part of the renegotiation, the final year of Ginn's contract ($1.8 million) has been deleted, making him an unrestricted free agent in 2012. (That season could have also voided on minimum playing-time but hadn't yet done so)

Ginn caught 12 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown in his first season with the 49ers, while averaging 21.1 yards per kick return and over 13 yards on 24 punt returns, including a 78-yard touchdown last December.
