WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

Ted Ginn Jr. shines in Miami Dolphins' exhibition win over Jacksonville Jaguars

MIAMI GARDENS ? The speculation during the early weeks of Dolphins training camp that Ted Ginn Jr. may be ready for a breakout year should only intensify after Monday night's exhibition opener at Land Shark Stadium.

Ginn caught two Chad Pennington passes for 26 yards, ran a reverse for another 14 and drew a 34-yard pass interference penalty in one quarter of work as the Dolphins pulled out a 12-9 decision over Jacksonville.

Ginn also had a 15-yard completion wiped out by a holding penalty, meaning the Dolphins looked to him five times in the first quarter. He combined for only 61 touches last season, less than four per game.

"He did some nice things, made a couple of nice plays," coach Tony Sparano said. "That's a good sign for me. I talk all the time about seeing guys do it in practice and being able to bring it to the game, and Teddy was able to do that today."

"I'm learning the game more and more," said Ginn, who caught 34 passes as a rookie and 56 last season. "They took some chances and threw some balls at me, and I tried to come down with every ball they threw my way."

Ted Ginn Jr. shines, backup cornerbacks struggle in 1st half of Miami Dolphins? pre-season opener
by Edgar Thompson

It was clear from the start of the Dolphins? exhibition opener that coaches wanted to showcase Ted Ginn Jr.?s playmaking ability.

Ginn responded well, coming up with two catches for 26 yards and gaining 14 yards on an end-around on Monday. Ginn also drew a pass interference call, good for 34 yards, essentially giving him 74 yards of offense.

Not a bad quarter of work for Ginn.

It?d still be nice if Ginn could keep his feet under him after contact. On a 15-yard slant from Chad Pennington, Ginn was bumped by CB Rashean Mathis and went down before Reggie Nelson arrived.

Big-play receivers with Ginn?s speed keep that play alive for another 5, 10 yards. But it?s an encouraging start.

NFL: Dolphins counting on Ginn to blossom
By STEVEN WINE, AP Sports Writer

DAVIE ? Ted Ginn Jr. was sprinting over the middle when the pass arrived a bit high, forcing him to reach up and leaving him exposed to defenders. Such moments can test an NFL receiver?s backbone ? and ribs.

Ginn passed the exam by making the catch. The jarring collision never came, but Ginn earned a pat on the back.

?That is a good sign for me,? said his coach, Tony Sparano.

?You just go out and show what you can do,? Ginn said.

How much Ginn can do is one of the biggest questions in the Miami Dolphins? training camp. He?s entering his third season, and while he hasn?t been a bust, he has yet to make the impact expected of a player taken ninth in the draft.

The Bill Parcells regime has dramatically upgraded the roster since taking over last year, but the role of a No. 1 receiver remains unfilled. The speedy Ginn is the leading candidate, but he must shake the rap that he shies away from contact. More than once last year, the slender, 180-pound Ginn stepped out of bounds with a tackler bearing down.

That?s what made the catch over the middle Monday night significant. It produced a modest 15-yard gain in the Dolphins? exhibition opener against Jacksonville, but second-year coach Sparano was pleased.

?I?ve seen progress there with Teddy catching the ball over the middle since I got here,? Sparano said. ?I really wanted to see if he could bring that to the game, and he did.?

Miami Dolphins notes: Ted Ginn Jr.'s lack of productivity in pre-season games little concern

DAVIE ? For the third time in three years it's to time to be concerned about wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr., and his play-making ability. Well, for some people.

"I told you last week, Ted Ginn right now has a lot more receptions than he did last year at this time," said Dolphins Coach Tony Sparano.

Actually, that's not true. Ginn, a first-round pick from Ohio State, has three receptions for 45 yards. At this time last year he had eight receptions for 97 yards. Neither set of numbers inspires confidence, but Sparano said to look beyond Ginn's numbers.

"The game didn't dictate (throwing to Ginn) last week," Sparano said. "We threw maybe one or two balls his way. I'm fine with where he is right now."

Ginn, vying to make a name in the AFC East alongside game-breaking wide receivers such as Buffalo's Terrell Owens and New England's Randy Moss, hasn't been the threat the Dolphins had hoped.

He's started all 32 regular-season games but his two-year numbers - 90 receptions for 1,210 yards (13.4-yard average) and four touchdowns - are relatively pedestrian.

Still, Sparano keeps the faith, hoping the Chad Pennington-to-Ginn combination becomes a legitimate concern for defenses.

"He's got the long-range speed, he's got all those things, so you think that's where your home run is," Sparano said.

Dolphins officials believe Ted Ginn Jr. is ready to break out and didn't feel a need to get him a lot of offensive touches in the preseason (five catches). ``Most of the great receivers really come on in the third year,'' he said.

What changed from last year? ``He's doing an excellent job of route-running,'' Chad Pennington said. ``It's one thing to be fast. It's another thing to create separation. Those are two totally different things. In this league, you don't create separation just by speed. He's learning that. When he's coming out of breaks, he's got that separation now. I'm really happy where he is.''

Ted Ginn?s kickoff returns were to the 14, 18, 16 and 14. He was replaced in the fourth quarter by Patrick Cobb, who returned the kickoff to the 24. Coincidence? If so, it was a indicative of a disappointing day for a special teams that ranked 29th last year and didn?t do anything to change the idea on the first game.

But remember this about Ginn?s day, too: Twice he broke open deep for would-have-been touchdowns. Chad Pennington, throwing off the back foot under a quasi-rush, missed Ginn the first time. Pat White missed him the other time.

I'm not sure it was too far initially I think he slowed up because he knew he was nearing the back of the endzone. Catchable but for how wide open he was running into and threw the endzone you have to put it where the receiver doesn't even have to think about where his feet are.
