WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

Ginn thrives against less disciplined defenses that overpursue, allowing him to cut back on plays like reverses and bubble screens, or catch the safties taking bad angles on slants. When a first rate defense like Texas play their assignments well, he's not going to have the kind of success he did against OK State.

He's a totally different type of WR than Holmes (or Jenkins -- not that I would expect a genius like Tibor to figure that out), so comparing their production directly doesn't give much enlightenment. Ginn is there (as someone already pointed out) to turn short, quick passes into home run threats. It's not going to work every time, but it's still a valuable part of the offense.

Ginn isn't going to become our go-to WR at any point. He's an athlete playing that position, not a pure WR like Holmes or like Larry Fitzgerald or Mike Williams (just to name a few other highly touted WRs). He will get his yards and his scores, though, and he is a threat that the defense has to keep in their minds every time he's on the field.

Nothing has happened to Ted Ginn. He's fine.

He is completely overrated as a receiver. The only game he really did anything as a receiver was Oklahoma State. Got a lucky bounce versus Indiana.

I'd rather have Michael Jenkins anyday over Ginn.

I would give up Teddy Ginn and your pick of Justin Zwick or Troy Smith for another year of duo Krenzel and Jenkins....Hmmmm...brings another thought of this whole Ginn thing. We all know that there is problems with the flux between Smith or Zwick, Zwick or Smith. Maybe its the on-the-field relationship between our receivers and QB's that may be hurting. Krenzel had his own soul mate in Jenkins. Hoying had Galloway, Bellisarri had his Reggie Germany and Ken-Yon Rambo. I think the go-to receiver is Holmes, but Ginn wants to prep himself to become the #1 when Holmes drafts this year, by using all his talent. The question then shifts to "whose the go-to QB" - already started in another thread.

Teddy just needs to become Ginn and use those talents, no doubt hes in limbo with the QB controversy, wanting OSU to stick to a play book he knows and gel with.

great points, guys... keep 'em coming...

mentioning Hoying and Galloway caused me to recall Terry Glenn's Belitnikoff winning performances of 1995... he wasn't a pure deep threat, but he WAS a threat to score every time he caught the ball... perhaps the Staff should look at some of the short In's and such that Glenn excelled so much in running...

remember that in '95, we ran pretty much a short passing offense, but with the threat to take any pass play to the house...

at any rate, i am NOT about to write TG2 off... he is getting double coverage every time he runs a route, and until the other WRs start getting enough production that the defense cannot afford to to double him, he's not going to see the ball all that much... at the same time, with all the attention he's getting, Santonio and Gonzales are seeing single coverage, which will only lead to greater production by them...

i think that the best option is to keep Teddy in the slot, or the shot-Ginn-WB, where he is less likely to see double covereage...

we should run 3-wide EVERY PLAY... i don't care whether it's z-trips, y-trips, the shot-Ginn, shotgun, or I... spread 'em out, and keep 'em guessing... too many times, we go to 4 or 5-wide and simply run a QB draw... that's the most unimaginative thing i can think of...

edit: just to clarify, "every play" is hyperbole... there are obviously situations that dictate different formations, but i hope you get my point...

One problem...our QB and our RB have nowhere near the ability that our players at those positions had in 1995. That can help a receiver.

Any comments like. "ginn is afraid to get hit" just piss me off. Get a clue buddy. As for what has happened to him, Ginn Sr was in the hospital, that has to have an effect on concentration. Also as I pointed out in the game thread. TS, himself said, "it's partly the QBs fault, Ginn didn't see more touches". Smith was very rusty and his head was spinning! He, TG, will be fine!

It's not Ginn's fault if Gonzo doesn't make catches... 1st possession, 3rd down, wide open, drops pass, we boot and we're down 3.

It's not Ginn's fault if Smith looks for the run before the pass.

It's not Ginn's fault that we still don't have a halfback/fullback who can come in under the corners and take the short pass while our wide outs pull the defense down field.

It's not Ginn's fault that he only had... what?... five touches aside from kickoffs and punts.

This is a young team in key spots. If Pittman emerges as a threat, if we have a fullback who can catch the ball... well, you get my drift.

I'm dissappointed for the team. They played hard. They made few mental mistakes, but that was a deep and experienced defense we were up against and Texas played a hell of a game. They hung in when most teams would have folded and when they got a shot at the very end they made it. We had at least four shots at putting the game away and came up short each time.

This team WILL BE BACK.

He did win the MSU game for us and made a couple of critical catch against scUM at the end of the first half.

Even if he is not as polished as we would like him to be his potential is too great not to try and get him more touches intentionally.

I would argue that Ginn as a true sophomore, no less, has altered the way teams play against us, left Holmes in one on one coverage, the tight end open, and has given us great field position in the first two games this year. I think Ginn will live up to the billing with maturity and good coaching. He is making a difference in ways not completely obvious. when our offense picks up steam as the season goes on the plays will come. Teams need to pay more for ignoring our other weapons and people will be back on the band wagon before long due to Ginns amazing abilities. Hamby has to catch the ball they need to throw to him about 8 times this saturday.

Kid came in as a CB. He's been playing WR for just over 12 months right now and you're questioning why he's not as good (or polished) as Gonzo, Holmes, Jenkins, and Fitzgerald?! A few weeks ago, everyone here was drooling with anticipation over Ginn's second year here. Two weeks in and we're calling for his starting job?? First time he breaks a huge one, I'm sure a lot of those tunes will change.

ive got a clue. if you ask some more informed "inside" guys here they will tell you that their "sources" say he is too. thats the way it is.

the thing with his dad is sad. but, great players elevate their games in big games and when situtaions like that happen they also take their game to the next level. who was it whose brother was shot to death a few years ago on friday night played an amazing game saturday. brett farve (an nfl guy and a stretch) when his dad died.

You're saying that Ohio State players are telling you that Teddy is afraid to get hit?
