WR Taurian Washington (official thread)

Dispatch

Who made a mark? Taurian Washington

Sunday, April 20, 2008 6:39 AM

Taurian Washington

? Basics: Sophomore receiver
? Quick history: He made a splash early in camp as a freshman last year, and even caught a late touchdown pass from Antonio Henton in the opening win over Youngstown State. Most of his action after that came on special teams.
? Spring-game display: He led the Gray with four catches for 71 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown pass from Joe Bauserman. He caught a 63-yarder later from Bauserman that was wiped out by penalty.
? What it means: With Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline returning, and with Dane Sanzenbacher also stepping up, the receiver room is full. But Washington looks like a deep threat not to be forgotten.
? Quotable: "The last couple of days he's really been stepping up. He's a smart football player, and I think he has learned from both of the Brians. ? He can run really well and he can go up and get the football." -- quarterback Todd Boeckman

Washington picks up momentum in receiver race
JASON LLOYD, Morning Journal Writer
04/20/2008

COLUMBUS -- In a deep pool of receivers, Taurian Washington did his best to emerge as a viable backup. Washington caught four passes for 71 yards and a touchdown for Gray in Scarlet's 20-7 victory yesterday.

Washington is caught in a logjam with Dane Sanzenbacher and Ray Small as the backups to Brian Hartline and Brian Robiskie. Add to that incoming recruits like DeVier Posey and Jake Stoneburner, who is already with the team, and every positive impression helps.

''I think there could be an opportunity for him. He still needs to make some strides between now and then (fall),'' Hartline said. ''Having a good spring game and showing he can make plays is always good for a resume.''

Hartline said Washington still needs to adjust to the speed of the game.

''There's a lot of hesitation on seeing a coverage and running the right route for that coverage,'' he said. ''Or when they roll during the middle of a play, you have to see that on the run, which is very difficult. I think that just comes with time.''

Of the receivers expected to contribute in the fall, Small had five catches for 74 yards, Stoneburner had a 19-yard catch and Sanzenbacher had an 11-yard reception.

While Taurian is still down in the depth chart, perhaps they should have him give some tackling lessons to a couple of the DB's. Made a very good tackle on a kick return Saturday. Grabbed on and held on until he could get the leverage to throw the returner down. I was surprised to see it was Washington, not Chekwa, who made that tackle.

Sorry to bump this thread but I really have not heard much about Taurian at all... did something happen to him or some news about him slip by me undetected because shouldn't he be in the running for a starting reciever job this spring too?

He did well in bowl practices, but a starting spot will be tough to land.

Sanzenbacher & Posey will be tough to beat, and Small is in his final year here (and playing for an NFL selection and contract). Then factor in different packages (Thomas out of the backfield, Stoneburner as a mismatch) and the 3rd/4th wr might have less time than we'd expect.

IMO this years WR corps is gonna shock the B10...alot of other fan bases have been bashing our WR this year...I hope they eat some serious crow.
Well, in fairness, not many of these guys have proven anything on the big stage. The potential is there, but they need to realize it. Personally, I think Posey is gonna be a stud. He may end up an all timer based on his abilities and the offense we could concievably be running. Ray is a wildcard. We've been waiting for him to break out the past two years, hopefully his Senior year is one to remember. Sanz is a very good reciever, but lets be honest, is a possession/slot guy. Taurian so far is a practice stud that hasn't carried it over to the games. Flash and Jackson have a ton of potential, but again, it needs to translate to the games. The depth and potential is exciting, but its a boom or bust unit.

Yup, we have a lot of talent to put on the field but it is very young and they all need experience. Let's hope they can use their talent well enough until they get the experience they need.

Well, we're going to be more explosive there for sure. Remains to be seen if they run the right routes, get off the line of scrimmage clean, adjust to the ball, etc.

If the D is rolling a safety over the top of Posey all the time, then the other guys have to make them pay for that (or, God forbid, the TE! up the seam)

The WR corp has a ton of potential, good size, some good to great speed, and combined with Stoney as a hybrid TE, and TP's running ability, there should be plenty of opportunities for mismatches and one on one coverages for them to exploit.

Like others have said the experience is slight, but that can be somewhat overcome with talent. My hope is that the work ethic and route running of Robo rubbed off on the young guys who were here last year enough to show them the importance of running precise routes. When you add in Carter and his should be, will be Hall of Fame fathers emphasis on route running and this group could be outstanding.
