Steelers: Holmes emerges
as top receiver
By: Chris Harlan, Times Sports Staff

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Santonio Holmes pushed himself into a role as the Steelers go-to receiver Sunday, a position he's quietly coveted since arriving in Pittsburgh as a rookie.

He might not give it back.

"I asked the coach to put it on my shoulders," Holmes said after scoring both Steelers touchdowns in Sunday's 21-14 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. "If you're going to put it on my back, I'm definitely going to carry this team as far as I can."

This time, he nearly carried them to victory.

With veteran Hines Ward sidelined with a sprained knee, the 23-year-old Holmes caught six passes for 128 yards and touchdowns of 43 and 7 yards. The yardage was his career high. The six receptions tied his career best.

Holmes just wishes they'd come in a victory.

"It would have been (better)," Holmes said, "but I can still celebrate. On that (season highlight) DVD, like coach says ... they're going to show Steelers lost, Ten had a good game, now let's keep moving."

It's elementary as Holmes uses speed to become Steelers' deep threat and No. 1 receiver

Santonio Holmes is living up to the high hopes the Steelers had for him when they moved up in draft to select him.

For all the principles who remain the same from Super Bowl XL, and there are many, Santonio Holmes was not with the Steelers the last time they faced the Seattle Seahawks.
But, in the time that has elapsed since that day in Detroit, he has rapidly become a major player in the Steelers' offense, almost as much as those Super Bowl heroes Hines Ward and Willie Parker.
Ward, though, said you have to go back even further to measure the impact Holmes is having on the Steelers' offense. The four-time Pro Bowl receiver said Holmes is giving the Steelers their best one-two receiving tandem since Plaxico Burress was the starting split end.

I was at the game yesterday and we were all questioning why he wasn't playing. He came out to warm up but then spent the game standing on the sideline.

It was a shame that he got injured but hopefully he will be able to play in the next game.

Bye week next week, which should help with all the walking wounded(Holmes, Hines, Hampton and Polo)

Seattle should be ashamed of themselves for how bad they looked yesterday. :slappy:

Steelers receiver Santonio Holmes missed Sunday's game with a hamstring injury suffered during pregame warm-ups, adding another name to the team's growing injury list.

Holmes' last-minute injury forced the Steelers to play a person short in the 21-0 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

How the hell does he get injured in the pre-game warmups. With Chad Johnson on a bye week I needed Santonio to have a big game. The least he could have done was give me a call. I got so raped this week, I should just go ahead and change my teams name to the prison bitches.

Oh yeah, I hope he gets better. Santonio is one of my favorite players.

Holmes making case for being No.1 receiver

By F. Dale Lolley, Staff writer
[email protected]

In five games - he missed one with a hamstring injury three weeks ago against Seattle - Holmes has 20 receptions for 339 yards and four touchdowns.

In his last 16 games, Holmes has caught 60 passes for 1,032 yards and six touchdowns. Those numbers are very comparable to the 83 catches for 1,079 yards and six touchdowns that Ward has in his last 16 games.

Are we seeing a changing of the guard as the Steelers' No. 1 receiver?

"It hasn't been something I've been looking for or thinking about, but it has been something that I want to work toward being," said Holmes. "I want to be the No. 1 receiver on this team. When Hines is gone, we're going to need someone to step up."

Steelers' Holmes hopes big plays come against Bengals
By Joe Starkey
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, October 28, 2007

Two years ago, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson compared the Steelers to a black-and-white television set.
You know, out of style.

But that was before the Steelers developed a penchant for knocking the Bengals out of the picture.

About a month after Johnson's comment, the Steelers beat the Bengals in a wild-card playoff game.

Last season, the Steelers finished the Bill Cowher era in grand fashion when they kept the Bengals out of the playoffs with a 23-17 overtime victory at Paul Brown Stadium.
Steelers receiver Santonio Holmes remembers it well. He caught a 34-yard pass to set up the game-tying field goal, then turned a simple slant pattern into the game-winning, 67-yard touchdown.

Afterward he said of the Bengals, "They really didn't want it as bad as we did."

This week, Holmes reflected on the victory.

"It meant a lot, because we ended up sending Cincinnati home just like us," he said. "It also helped me get my first 100-yard game. There were a lot of positives in that."

Holmes is a rising star for Steelers
Holmes is better known as the Steelers' deep threat, but now he is making the tough plays over the middle, too.
Tuesday, October 30, 2007

It's not as if they called Santonio Holmes a wimp. That would be ridiculous. You don't become a starter in the NFL by being soft. But it was curious what impressed the Steelers coaches and players most about Holmes' performance in the 24-13 victory Sunday at Cincinnati. It wasn't his diving 42-yard catch that set up the first touchdown or his two critical third-down catches that kept later scoring drives going. It was the ice bags attached to his ribs and right thigh after the game.

"Santonio is learning how to play beat up," said offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.

Don't underestimate that.

"He's understanding that he can go over the middle and make plays," quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. "He caught that one slant where he went real high, caught it and got hit. That's him maturing. Last year, he probably goes up and ducks."

Added Arians: "He's making the really tough catch and getting up to make the next one. He took a big hit on that thigh in the first half. I don't know that he would have came back and played in the second half last season."
