WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

Holmes eases back into practice
By Scott Brown
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, July 29, 2007

Santonio Holmes said he is still not 100 percent, but the second-year wide receiver did take part in his first practice of training camp Saturday, albeit on a limited basis.
Holmes, who entered training camp No. 1 on the depth chart at split end, participated in some passing drills. Barring any setbacks, he will practice today.

"It's time," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "He's going to do everything (today) so he can start catching up."

Holmes had been sidelined after undergoing a non-football medical procedure. He wore shoulder pads Saturday but practiced in shorts.

When asked if he will be able to wear football pants today, Holmes said, "I'm not sure about that right now. We'll see how it feels and the doctors will let me know if I should wear shorts or not."
Holmes and the Steelers have not disclosed what type of medical procedure he had done.

Both acknowledge that the Steelers' 2006 first-round draft pick needs to play catch-up.

Holmes, who caught 49 passes for 824 yards and two touchdowns last season, said the biggest challenge he faces is getting into football-playing shape.

Doing some things in practice yesterday at least gave the former Ohio State standout a start on that.

"Just getting an opportunity to get back on the field felt good," said Holmes, who is also a top candidate to return punts, along with Willie Reid. "I got tired of sitting around, waiting."

Steelers training camp: Holmes coming into his own
Thursday, August 2, 2007
By Chris Beaven
Repository sports writer

Holmes is enthusiastic about any return to Ohio ? because the fans that cheered me when I played at Ohio State get an opportunity to watch me anytime I come back to Ohio.?

The 5-foot-11, 189-pound Holmes played in every game last season, starting the last four. He caught 49 passes for 824 yards and two touchdowns. He also returned a punt 65 yards for a TD. The Steelers will look for more production from him this year as he competes for the starting job opposite Ward.

?We don?t throw the ball a hundred times a game,? Ward said. ?But the opportunities you do get, you capitalize on them. It?s kind of the same as when he was at Ohio State. He didn?t get many opportunities, but when he did he made a name for himself. That?s why we selected him.?

Holmes, listed as a starter on the preseason depth chart, feels comfortable in his second training camp.

?I?m a lot more experienced,? he said. ?I?m still working hard and competing for a starting job, and we?ll just continue to keep pushing each other.?

That 67-yd TD pass Holmes caught against us sucked but at the same time I was happy to see Santonio make a big splash like that as a rookie. Probably why I'll never be a "serious" NFL fan...

Here's to Holmes having an injury-free, successful, second season as a pro... just not that successful against the Bengals.

Holmes still No. 1 at split end on depth chart
By Mike Prisuta
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, August 7, 2007

? Santonio Holmes continues to be listed No. 1 at split end on the Steelers' depth chart, but he continues to play behind Cedrick Wilson at the position. "Santonio missed a significant amount of time," head coach Mike Tomlin said following Sunday night's Hall of Fame Game against New Orleans. "There's plenty of time to let that sort itself out.
"We'll put one foot in front of the other and see where we are next week." Wilson caught four passes for 99 yards against New Orleans. Holmes, who returned to practice on July 28 after missing the opening week of camp (non-football related surgical procedure), caught three passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.

SANTONIO HOLMES

What do you think about offensive play in the first half?

Santonio Holmes: I think the offense is pretty much playing good. We have to come out and play with a little more intensity in the second half.

Do you think you are 100% now?

Holmes: Yeah, I feel pretty good. I think I am 100%. More reps and more time running on the field will probably get me in better shape.

Do you see a progression in the offense going from week one and now?

Holmes: At the same time, everyone is on the same progression. We're running a little bit more and getting more comfortable in the offense and everyone is still making strides.

WR Santonio Holmes ran with the first-team offense, opposite WR Hines Ward, for the first time in training camp on Tuesday. Holmes has been listed as a first-teamer since the camp-opening depth chart was released, but he has been playing behind WR Cedrick Wilson after not making it onto the field until July 28 due to a non-football related surgical procedure.

Ron Cook: Holmes needs to be a starter
It doesn't take much of a detective to realize that wide receiver Santonio Holmes, a deep threat, needs to be in the starting lineup
Thursday, August 16, 2007

By Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

From the beginning, new Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has talked of the importance of having an open mind. Let things play out through training camp and the exhibition games, he has said time and again. The tough decisions regarding player personnel will become obvious.

So it is with the team's split end position.

Santonio Holmes has to be the starter.

"He's one of our home run hitters," quarterback Charlie Batch said.

Holmes is Steelers' best playmaker

By John Harris
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Monday, August 20, 2007

Just give Santonio Holmes the darned ball.
With each catch and every big play, Holmes becomes more entrenched as the Steelers' playmaker at wide receiver.

Picking up where he left off from his rookie season, Holmes has the magic touch.

"I really just don't believe that anybody on any other team that we play can stop me," Holmes said after the game. "The more plays I make on the field makes me believe that even more."

Under the radar: Time for these 10 to get a little love
Sep. 2, 2007
By Clark Judge
CBSSports.com Senior Writer

Tool on down to your local magazine stand and pick up something, anything relating to the NFL. I guarantee most of the covers depict one of two guys --Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.

Swell. That leaves 1,694 others who could use a push -- which is what we're about to do. Here's a list of 10 flying under the radar, impact players who don't have the reputations of a Manning or Brady but who should make names for themselves sooner or later:

1. Santonio Holmes, WR, Pittsburgh: A year ago then-coach Bill Cowher couldn't get the guy's name straight, once calling him San Antonio. Now there's no excuse for not knowing who he is. Holmes is a bona-fide talent, the threat the Steelers must have to take the heat off Hines Ward.

Holmes struggled as a rookie, especially with fumbles as a return specialist, but once he cracked the starting lineup with four games left he was marvelous -? winding up with 49 catches, a 16.8-yards-per-catch average and a 67-yard TD to close the season. He also scored on a punt return.

This guy is good, and he could be extraordinary. In fact, there are people touting him to supplant Ward as the go-to receiver as early as this season. Ward will have something to say on the subject. For the moment, know that Holmes is everything the club imagined and on the verge of a breakout season and outstanding career.

As much as I HATE the Pittsburgh Cheaters (Bengals fan talking, sarcasm of course), I love to see Santonio do well. He is and always will be a Buckeye... But I was pretty pissed when he torched the Bengals last fall/winter.
