Acquiring Rossum Heightens Expectations For Holmes
Thursday, September 06, 2007
By Paul Eide
Steelers Fever Columnist

When the Steelers traded a conditional late-round draft pick to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for veteran return man/cornerback Allen Rossum, it showed how highly the team regards second-year player Santonio Holmes and just how far he has progressed from this time last year.

After an impressive preseason in which he lead the team with 170 reception yards and a 24.3 yards per catch average, Holmes asserted his value to the offense and showed that he was in fact ready to take the reins as the teams unquestioned No. 2 wide receiver. Of his seven preseason receptions, only two went for less than 20 yards and gave the new Steelers offense under Bruce Arians exactly what he needed to make his scheme work: a vertical threat to stretch defenses.

With Hines Ward, Cedrick Wilson and Nate Washington working underneath, Holmes preseason production on the outside showed that whatever value he had returning punts and kicks was now outweighed by the offense's need for him to make use of his electrifying skills consistently when the offense has the ball. Because of his slight build, and with a serious injury just one play away on perhaps the riskiest job in football, returning punts, the Steelers did the right thing by asking him to focus solely on offense.

Holmes hopes to have fun this season

Wide receiver Santonio Holmes heads into the 2007 season as one of the Steelers starting wide receivers, someone who could be a key play-maker for the offense and a player who would like to find himself in the Pro Bowl by season's end.

But more than anything, Holmes wants to have fun on the field this year.

"I want to get out there and have fun this year," said Holmes. "That's going to be the main thing. My focus is on getting an edge and just having fun the whole season."

Holmes catches two for 55, one score
Santonio Holmes - WR - PIT - Sep. 9 - 5:12 pm et

Santonio Holmes was the recipient of two passes for 55 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's opening day victory over Cleveland.

Holmes exposed a blown coverage in the middle of the field for a 40-yard TD to give Cleveland a 17-0 lead with less than a minute left in the first quarter. He would've had a bigger game if the Browns had put up any kind of fight. Holmes makes for an excellent WR3 next week against Buffalo. Sep. 9 - 5:12 pm et

Column: Holmes emerges as big-play threat
By: Mike Bires, Times Sports Staff
09/10/2007

On a day in which several wide receivers in the NFL posted big numbers, Santonio Holmes served notice that he's primed for his role as the Steelers' big-play threat.

Holmes, a first-round draft pick last year, wasn't one of the seven wideouts who hauled in catches worth 100 receiving yards or more Sunday. With 55 receiving yards in a 34-7 rout of the Browns, he wasn't close to reaching 100.

But Holmes was one of eight wideouts who caught a touchdown pass of 40 yards or longer.

Hines Ward, a 10th-year pro who's the Steelers' all-time receptions leader, remains the team's best overall wide receiver. But Holmes is closing the gap.

And even if Ward does catch more passes this year, look for Holmes to further develop as a "home run" threat.

Last year when he caught 74 passes, Ward had two receptions that went for 45 yards or more. Holmes, who caught 49 passes as a rookie, had three receptions longer than 45 yards.

Holmes, a former Ohio State star, has caught four TD passes in a Steelers uniform. All four have come on Ohio soil.

Last year, Holmes caught a 21-yard TD pass in Cleveland and a 67-yard, game-winning TD pass in Cincinnati.

In the Steelers' first preseason game this year, he caught a 3-yard TD pass in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.

Then on Sunday, he burnt the Browns again.

Steelers' receiver Holmes proving to be quite threat in passing game
By John Harris
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Sunday, September 23, 2007

Santonio Holmes isn't even the fastest receiver on the Steelers.
But today, when the Steelers host the San Francisco 49ers at Heinz Field, it doesn't matter who runs a 4.3 for the stopwatch.

Holmes is playing football, not running track.

Holmes has game speed. Coming out of his breaks, he has sprinter's speed.

After two games, Holmes has five catches for a team-high 108 yards. His 21.6-yard average also leads the team and tops AFC receivers who have a minimum of five catches.

Three of his catches were on third down, good for a healthy 17.7 yard average.

"It probably is overrated," Holmes said about the speed vs. quickness debate. "I'm aggressive to the ball. That describes my speed. When the ball's in the air, I'm going to adjust my speed to get the ball."

Steelers' Holmes progressing in all aspects
By Scott Brown
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Saturday, September 29, 2007

He didn't have a catch in the first half and finished with modest numbers: three receptions for 49 yards.
The statistics from the Steelers' 37-16 win Sunday over the San Francisco 49ers may not have shown it, but Santonio Holmes took a significant step, one that bodes well for the Steelers tomorrow when they visit the Arizona Cardinals.

The second-year wide receiver stood out in parts of the game that don't show up in box scores or on "SportsCenter" highlights, and his efforts did not go unnoticed.

"All of the coaches congratulated me and said that's the best game I've played since I've been here," said Holmes, the Steelers' first-round pick in 2006.

Well, not all of them.
"But I would probably agree with that," said offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, who was Holmes' position coach last season. "He did such a great job of blocking. Everybody wants to judge wide receivers by catches, but there's more to it than that."

That's not to say Holmes wasn't a factor in the passing game.

Two of his catches came on third down when the 49ers were still in the game, keeping alive drives that eventually resulted in Jeff Reed field goals.

Holmes said he was "dead tired" after the game, and it's easy to see why.

He spent much of the day shadowed by Nate Clements, one of the premier cornerbacks in the game, and still held his own as a receiver and a blocker.

"He was physical in the passing game and in the running game," Arians said, "He went up against a great player in Nate Clements, and he competed at a level you would want a No. 1 (wideout) to compete at."

Holmes appears to be pushing Hines Ward for that distinction on the Steelers, and he could be the No. 1 wide receiver against the Cardinals. Ward has a sprained right knee and has ruled himself out of the 4 p.m. game.
