WR Santonio Holmes (Super Bowl XLIII MVP)

I don't know how many of you were watching the post game stuff on ABC.

Clay Hall talked to Holmes on the field. The Buckeye fans in the crowd were chanting "ONE MORE YEAR!!" at Holmes. Clay asked him about it and Santonio left the window open to comeback by saying he's not really sure yet and there is a chance he'd be back next year.
true, but then his next response was:
"Oh man, being 3-1 against these guys, winning the last one on their home field"

obviously I am reading too much into it, but that 'last one' just made me cringe a little. So great to see the development in Troy to make Santonio realize he'll still have another great year next year

Maybe he meant the last one for him in Michigan Stadium, or the last game of the season.

I talked to Santonio's cousin after the Illinois game and asked him what he thought, and he basically said that they thought he had a chance to go in the first round, and if so could anyone blame him for going...of course I said not at all and we appreciated everything he's meant to the program.

P.S.
That clip of Pittman's TD run...is that Prescott Burgess being firmly planted on his ass by Stan White??? Classic! Great block Stan!!

Santonio Holmes and TS career's to date in perspective

I realize there is still 1 game to go to change these numbers somewhat but I think you'll be impressed regardless.

Santonio Holmes career
135 receptions #4 all time
2,171 yds #6 all time
24 TD's #3 all time

Some notes of interest for the Bowl game:

-needs 82 yds to pass Doug Donley for 5th all time in career receiving yardage.

-Career TD leaders for WR all time at OSU
1.Boston-34
2.Carter-27
3.Holmes-24

I don't think it takes any great insight to realize that anyone who finishes his career at OSU in the top 5 of all three major WR categories is one of the greatest to ever play here. To me his name has to start to come up (with the others) right after Boston and Carter in the greatest WR discussions.

While I'm on the topic of career achievments I'll touch on some very interesting Troy Smith numbers.

-His current total offense per game for 2005 is 248.5 ypg. Folks thats the #3 all time best season in OSU history behind only Joe G's 270 ypg in '98 and Bobby Ho's 253 ypg in '95. Still a Bowl game to be played mind you.

-TS career total O number is 3,734. Thats currently 13th all time at OSU, just 35 yds behind some guy named Eddie. With 14 games left in his career (hopefully) he is on pace to finish 2nd all time behind Art S.

-TS has scored 25 total TD's this year, that ties him with Joe Germaine and Pete Johnson for the 2nd best season all time.

-If he scored somewhere around that 25 number again next year(his current career number is 35) he would be very close to over taking Hoying for #2 all time

man these are 2 outstanding Ohio State Buckeyes, and im glad to have them both for not only their exceptional play on the field, but their attitude, leadership, and team-first mindsets. its going to be sad to see both of them leave, and i wish them both the best for everything they do, now and in the future.

While I'd love to see Santonio come back I just don't believe he will, and you really can't blame him. He's gonna be a 1st round pick and he has kids to support. Whoever starts in his place will have huge shoes to fill. Luckily we're deep at the WR position.

if Holmes stays, he'll reach Boston/Carter status. If he leaves...he won't quite be there. I don't see Holmes going in the 1st round if he leaves...so maybe he'll stay...but honestly, I think the team is fine without him. He'll make us better, but we are really deep at WR.

TS wins a national championship next year...no matter how he does it...he goes down as the greatest QB in Ohio State history...bar none. Even if he doesn't, he still might become the greatest. His status as legend or not will be decided in 359 days.

i really think that gonzo will step into Santonio's spot at Split End, Ginn will stay at Flanker, and Roy Hall will have a breakout year at Slot.

Statistically speaking, he simply cannot catch Art S who was at the very least the most prolific total offense machine in OSU history.

If he somehow did have a season in 2006 that got him up to Schlichter's career levels, then go ahead and add a Heisman to his resume because it would have to be the greatest season in CFB history.

Art's the OSU career total offense leader with 8,850 yards. IF TS keeps his 250 yds a game average for the next 14 games he's still going to be 1,600 yards behind Art. Thats a shitload.

Also Art was responsible for 85 total TD's in his career. TS is at 35 with 14 games to go. He'd have to average 4 TD's a game for 14 games to catch Art.

So TS would have to gain about 5,000 total yards and be responsible for about 50 TD's next year to catch Art Schichter in those 2 categories for the all time OSU lead. Just for shits and gigles that an average of about 360 total yards and 4 TD's per game for the next 14 games.

Now, if TS wins a NC or another B10 title or destroys scUM again then I'll be right there with you putting him near the top but to be fair, from a statistical point of view, its very unlikely that he can catch Schlichter and I feel we too often slight the stars of the past in favor of today's players on this site.

Give Art his due and bring up names like Hoying, Germaine, Krenzel, Kern, Greene and maybe Smith after his.

I agree. I think Holmes is peerless on this team, but with Hall, Dukes, Lyons, and the rave revivews that Hartline has received from practice... and the fact that Robiskie is playing this year when he isn't needed... all suggest that we will be remarkably deep at WR either way.

I realize Boston is a legend here at OSU, but I think Santonio is equal with Boston, if not slightly above. Perhaps Boston was more of an unstoppable force, but Holmes flat out dominated one of UM's better CBs (in recent history) for two straight years. His freshman year, he caught 2 tds for 121 yards. He was unstoppable in 04, when he schooled jackson again and again (including for one score). He made some huge catches in crunch time in 05, and was amazing enough to overshadow a talent like Ginn.

I also admire the fact that Santonio's biggest "taunt" was occasionally diving into the endzone. That is hardly a horrible thing to do. I never liked Boston's showboating. If you're that big you should be able to dominate and let that dominance do the talking.

I am one of the bigger TS homers, and definitely agree he's nowhere close to Art. I would place Kern, Krenzel before him. I haven't seen enough film of Greene to make a fair judgment. I don't think it's a stretch to juggle Germaine and Smith. Each is entitled to his own opinion, but I think being the MVP of two UM wins (including one as a huge dog in 04) should put him right up there with them.
