If the coaches continue to give Ray Small second chances, when is he going to learn that the coaches are serious? And it may be too late for Ray Small, but what about the next couple of guys? The coaches need to put the message out that if you break team rules, you will be punished. And if they don't "turn their backs" on Small, they need to be prepared to face additional players who will break the rules, expecting to get off the hook as well.

They can say whatever they wish in the media, but Ray Small has had more chances than most players ever get. Ask James Scott...

Agreed.

Throughout our lives I think we all have worked with or known people who think that they are the "exception to the rule". For some reason, perhaps only known to themselves, they just don't get it or refuse to get on board. What applies to everyone else, does not apply to them. They are always looking for the short cut or path of least resistence.

This makes it especially sad and difficult when this person has an exceptional talent. One, because they think that their talent transcends the rules. And two, often times their absence truly effects the quality of work that is produced by the whole. As a result, everyone pays a price when discipline or punishment is inacted.

Hopefully, that is not the case here. I only hope that from this point on, Ray, and those who are speaking into his life, start making right decisions in both life and football.

A couple of things I'd like to mention in this discussion:

As of today, Ray Small is still a Buckeye, and he will always be linked to Ohio State. We are all Buckeye fans. Let's treat the discussion of this latest incident accordingly.

From what I've read in the press, Ray Small has made a number of mistakes (late to meetings, etc.). I think everything I've read seems to indicate that he is a young man who is struggling to find his sense of responsibility. Guess what? Many people his age do, regardless of whether they are extremely talented athletes or not. Remember, some college students are already adults, and the rest are trying to figure out how to become one. Nothing he's doing is that atypical for someone his age.

Ray Small, IMO, is a very talented young man who has had some flashes of brilliance on the football field for Ohio State. He sounds like he's needed some help with responsibility/maturity issues, and the coaching staff has tried to help him understand those issues and face them head-on. I see no wrongdoing by the coaching staff here--it's a young man trying to find his direction in life, and a number of people who are trying to help him find his way. (I'm not a big fan of some of the quotes attributed to his father, but that's another issue.)

Going forward, I hope that Ray realizes as much of his potential as he can. If that involves staying at Ohio State and growing within his current environment, that's great. If it's best for Ray to move on and get a fresh start, that's also understandable.

I don't know Ray Small, but I cheer him when he makes plays for Ohio State. I wish him the best of luck, both on and off the field, no matter where his path takes him.

Well, unless it's Michigan... (to avoid the responses--that's a joke, I have no info, and would guess strongly that it wouldn't be, if only because the Big Ten does not allow in-conference transfers to be awarded athletic scholarships)

I mean yes he's a buckeye, but he's surely doing his share to get the perma' boot from the program. If I'm a buckeye guess what I love the school so muich that I do whatever it takes to keep my nose clean and apart of something great. How many chances do you need? If i'm at work I get fired for having something like this happen 3-4 times. What because i'm 23 years old does that make it ok? Nope. The fact is Ray has an obligation to the school he signed with and he hasn't lived up to his end.

The fact that they (Small Family) wanted to throw in the towel last season before some of his troubles started is just head scratchig. Now, yes, it would be better if he transfered to get a fresh start today but a year ago it was fixable. It sounds like Ray is listening far too much to his dad and not the right people. Being bitter is not how you solve this especially when you are directly to blame for the situation.

Football: OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel confirmed today that wide receiver Ray Small has been suspended for the Northwestern game. Tressel did not go into details as to the reasons for the suspension, saying only that the suspension is currently for one game and that Small's reinstatement will be determined by his actions between now and OSU's next game.

In a report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Small's father Ken Small was quoted as saying that his son is considering a transfer and that Tressel's behavior toward his son had become "personal". Tressel said that he has had no recent discussion with Small regarding a transfer.

Tressel seemed to have little patience with reporter's questions regarding the situation with Small. He tried several times during the interview to steer it toward a discussion of the Northwestern game, but when reporters persisted with their questions about Small, Tressel cut the press conference short and walked away.

Ray no matter what you've been told your NFL chances are slim! Whether you actually get a degree or not if you clean up your act and finish your career at tOSU there will be opportunities. It's up to YOU! YOU know what you need to do! If you and your father are risking your tOSU career on the hope of a million dollar NFL contract you might be better off buying a lotto ticket. Note to Mr Small go back to work your son is not going to be your meal ticket. Help him become a man..instead of sending him down a road traveled by many who were banking on NFL millions...
