WR Ray Small (official thread)

I agree that this kid is probably gonna be a stud and a very exciting recruit matchup with USC once again.

However I don't see him tying up the server. We will have Ted Ginn Jr, Jamario O'Neal, Donte Whitner, Welch? (might prove he can cover like he can tackle this year), Lenix (safety perhaps), etc. Who knows, we might even have Rolle on board by the time Small is one of the main remaining targets on the recruiting hunt. I just don't see him being quite as sensational of a recruit as Gwaltney or Dwayne Jarrett. Those two provided us with something we didn't have, the potential for a blockbuster big frame at those two positions, in two areas we desperately needed them (Jarrett just cuz MJ was departing).

Honestly I think there is an outside chance of that award going to the Hornsby-Tebow combined traffic. Hornsby may very well end up at tOSU, and with all of the players we're landing (including maybe two more of his teammates this year at WR), plus the potential to immediately establish ourselves as #2 behind USC in September (Texas, Iowa) gives us a shot at landing Tebow as well. Fortunately QB is not as big of a need, and Hakes might prove to be the mobile QB we want anyway (since we know he'll probably verbal within minutes of receiving an offer).
BFS - my post was a joke...I know there is no way to predict which recuit will give us the most headaches this early. But we shall see...I was pointing out the fact that he is an early USC/OSU battle, and in the past those have turned ugly on the message boards. I think we both know that there is a very good chance that a recruit we aren't even talking about will come out of nowhere and produce the most drama when it is all said and done.

Tebow is Florida's to lose in my opinion and I think Hornsby will either stay South or come to Columbus. USC will be involved with both as well.

GH seems very confident about Rose and Small, and I am happy to go along with that, but as we know, Glenville recruits always keep us guessing because that is what they are instructed to do, so as to generate more interest about the program for the kids who are not getting major D1 looks. People were sweating Whitner, Ginn, and Lenix up until the day they gave their verbal. I doubt Ray is any different, even if he is an OSU lock.

Didn't Teddy Ginn talked about the USC and it's track program? For a little while, I thought Teddy was going to USC. but back then I didn't know much about Glenville-OSU connections.

Ray's talking USC in the same manner. I think it's too early to tell what he's going to do. but since he's from Glenville, OSU stands a very good chance of landing him.

My point exactly...

Good to know... keep bringing info like this up for those of us who were only in the recruiting game recently (I wasn't around before october 04 on this site).

And wadc45, I figured you weren't too serious. I was just arguing since there's little else to get worked up about in the offseason.

I am actually a little surprised about how sure GH is about Small. I haven't been on the BN message boards today but I imagine that Small's "USC is my dream school" quote has probably made its way there by now, meaning the BN boards are at DEFCON 3...

I read Gary H. chat from last night and he is winking about Small and Rose already. He stated that he has ALREADY personally put them down as Buckeyes but stated that they will both go through the process as always.
Can someone paraphrase what he said? Or if its free, copy teh quote in here?

I caught the Warren Harding - Glenville game last year. Small stood out as did Rose. The story we get is both Small & Rose will take their visits ( and the parties, food, etc.) but WILL be OSU bound.
Can't blame em. Would even be pretty sweet to go around together if you got along well. Get your transportation paid for (do they usually fly or bus?) to the schools, then wined and dined like mad, have all of the best facilities prepared for you and less than a dozen others... it would be amazing.

Plus it would be so much fun since you would know where you were headed, and the trips did not involve the pressure that most of the other recruits were facing. Plus if I were Small and I was a lock to tOSU, I would help improve Tressel's reputation by letting the USC-tOSU battle carry out late and then choose tOSU. Not in a JG sense, just wait to make your official decision until the end of the year, when it will earn tOSU more publicity. Ironically waiting to announce in the spotlight could partially be an unselfish decision :)

How bout juiced and goosed?

Actually that's probably fulmer's secret. We were right he was doing dirty stuff, but we were sniffing down the wrong alley. He's got a very gentle touch with certain recruits and they know they can't find that kind of treatment anywhere else.

If I was a D-1 recruit I would definitly take all 5 visits: O-State, USC, Texas, Florida, and Tennessee (Fulmer shows his recruits a good time). Plus you really get to see the country and free vacations. I think Small will do the same thing and eventually choose OSU though I am sure USC will make a good push. But honestly he is a Glenville guy.

Small has offers from tOSU, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan State, Ball State, and Akron. He is mainly interested in OSU, Miami, and USC. He says in this update that he prefers WR over CB and believes he is a gamebreaker on offense. He will go through the "process" before deciding.
