Fleet-footed senior keeps defenses on their toes

Glenville coach Ted Ginn Sr. knows first hand what an impact a game-breaker has on the overall success of a football program.

After all, he watched one of the best grow up under his roof - Ohio State sophomore and former Tarblooders All-American, Ted Ginn Jr.

This fall, Ginn Sr. is coaching another of those game-altering performers. And the results have brought back memories of the 2003 season, when Ginn Jr. was putting high school defenses on their heels.

"Sometimes God gives people gifts," said coach Ginn, referring to his wideout, cornerback, kick-return specialist and tailback, Raymond Small.

"God blessed him to have that speed, and over the years he has gained the knowledge of the game. He knows what he is doing when he gets the ball."
When the 6-0, 177-pound Small got his hands on the ball in last weekend's regional quarterfinal matchup with Euclid, Panthers fans were holding their collective breath.

First it was an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown that led to a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter. In the third quarter, Small dashed any hopes of a Euclid comeback by taking a little swing pass from quarterback Arvell Nelson and going 80 yards into the end zone. The result was a 46-0 victory and a date with Solon in Saturday's 5 p.m. Division I regional semifinal at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

"Other than playing offense, we have to have some guys step up on special teams," coach Ginn said. "Playing tough defense and having great special teams will win a lot of games."

Rated among the top seven seniors in the state by several recruiting publications, Small's dedication to special teams helped the Tarblooders make history last season as the first football program from the Cleveland Municipal School District to win a regional championship.

Now he's ready to add a few more chapters to that record book.

He said the same thing two months ago. Nothing to worry about.

It was reported on some Internet sites that Small was close to committing to USC while he was on his visit but Small said that that was not the case at all.

“Never. I never even thought about committing <!--EZCODE BOLD START-->because before I went out there in my head I know where I’m going<!--EZCODE BOLD END-->,” said Small, who was hosted on his visit by Patrick Turner, a wide receiver from Tennessee. “But you never know.”

Id say that says it pretty clearly but what do I know?
