WR Parris Campbell Jr. (Philadelphia Eagles)

URBAN MEYER SAYS PARRIS CAMPBELL 'MIGHT GO' AGAINST NEBRASKA

Ohio State redshirt sophomore wide receiver Parris Campbell left the Northwestern game in the fourth quarter on a cart due to an apparent ankle injury.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said Monday the former St. Vincent-St. Mary's product suffered a high ankle sprain and would be "questionable" to play Saturday against Nebraska.

Meyer upgraded Campbell during his weekly Thursday appearance on the Urban Meyer Coach's Show, saying Campbell "might give it a go" against the Cornhuskers.

Wide receivers coach Zach Smith appeared later in the show and revealed how Campbell has been telling Smith he plans to play since Sunday afternoon.

One of our team sources who spends plenty of time around the team said the following: Believe the hype.

“Parris Campbell is on a different plane than he was a year ago,” the source began. “Whether it be catching the ball, running routes, being an aggressive receiver, he is in a completely different place. There has never been any question about his speed. But now he is putting everything together. It’s exciting to see.”

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer on WR Parris Campbell: ‘He’s one of our best playmakers’

21-Parris-Campbell-2-by-Jeremy-Birmingham_w1viuz.jpg

Ohio State WR Parris Campbell has impressed head coach Urban Meyer so far in spring practice.

Tuesday marked “Winner-Loser Day” at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, in which every drill during Ohio State’s sixth spring practice session ended with — well, you guessed it: a winner and a loser.

After each drill, Buckeyes strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti announced its winner over his loudspeaker. And if you stuck around long enough, the sound of Marotti’s raspy voice shouting Parris Campbell’s name began to serve as the morning’s soundtrack.

Stop if you’ve heard this before, but the Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary product appears to be primed for a breakout season.

Yes, the former 4-star prospect has had his play in practice praised before, only to fail to deliver on the hype. But watching Campbell’s crisp routes — and the way he beat a defensive back corps as talented as any in the nation with relative ease on Tuesday — it became easier to buy into the belief that the redshirt junior is due for a big 2017.

“He’s standing out big time,” Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said of Campbell on Tuesday. “He’s one of my favorite players just because he’s so unselfish and he goes so hard. He deserves a great year. He’s one of our best playmakers right now.”

PARRIS CAMPBELL READY TO PLAY H-BACK ROLE, LEAD OHIO STATE WIDE RECEIVERS

83944_h.jpg

Parris Campbell doesn’t consider himself to be a Curtis Samuel clone, but he is embracing the opportunity to take over Samuel’s role in Ohio State’s offense.

"On the field, I’m Parris Campbell," Campbell said Thursday. "I’m not Curtis Samuel. But I’m definitely the H-back of the offense."

After taking over the H-back role in Ohio State’s offense last year, Samuel had a breakout year, leading the Buckeyes with 74 receptions for 865 yards and seven touchdowns while also running the ball 97 times for an additional 771 yards and eight touchdowns.

That enabled Samuel to declare early and be a second-round pick in the NFL draft, opening the door for Campbell to slide into his H-back role.

While Campbell doesn’t want to directly compare himself to Samuel, he does have his sights set on having a breakout year of his own.

"I’m just looking to have a great year," Campbell said. "In whichever way that comes, it’s going to come."

Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith says it’s Campbell’s "time to go be that guy."

"He’s always been a role player, always been a really good player, but he’s never had to be the guy," Smith said. "You had a Mike Thomas, you had a Curtis Samuel. Now it’s Parris’ turn to be the guy. Every year we’ve had one receiver that is kind of your dude. And I’d like it to be more than that, I think it’s got a chance to be more than that, but it’s Parris’ time to go be the guy on offense."

Fellow fourth-year junior wide receiver Terry McLaurin said Campbell "looks really comfortable" in his new role.

"I think he’s going to emerge in that role," McLaurin said. "If you need him to be outside, he can be outside too, but I feel like at H, that’s really his home and he’s really owned that spot this year."

Despite the two drops I'll take 6 receptions for 136 yds and one touchdown any game of the year.

Agreed, funny... were his stat line 7-receptions, 180-yards and two touchdowns we'd be talking about him and his breakout year. Funny how one missed ball is the difference.

FTR: I'm looking forward to more of the same. First game jitters, missing an over the shoulder, largely uncovered notwithstanding, I'll take what we got last night knowing that there will be improvement.

Hell, he gets 64 yards more and he's in rare company. Only Santonio, David Boston, Terry Glenn, and Gary Williams have put together 200 yard performances in the scarlet and gray.
