that implies to me.. ankle too.. cuz that's the spot all these come together "when you plant the foot the wrong way" but body keeps moving...non-contact tibia & fibula break due to planting his foot the wrong way
basically you corkscrew until the tibia breaks.. but you have to have serious torque for the fibula to break.. altho it could be the bottom protruding parts that connect with the talus.. if tendons and ligaments didn't tear, that's one seriously strong hombre... cuz they usually go before the fibula gives way
in most sports, this is a major sprain.. but I'm guessing the engaged spikes didn't let the foot spin out
the rod is necessary because the tibia is non-weight bearing and needs the stabilizer to heal

PS Usually this only occurs when some other force has added inertia.. like being hit while going up.. so 'non-contact' is a surprise
