New deal for Lions' Furrey
Associated Press

ALLEN PARK ? Mike Furrey and Mike Martz have been together in two cities.
It looks like they won't make it a third.
Furrey, a free-agent wide receiver, agreed to a new contract with the Detroit Lions Tuesday night and said on Wednesday that he expects his mentor to remain in town as well.
"I've talked to Mike quite a bit over the past couple weeks, and he said he's not even sure he wants to be a head coach anymore," Furrey said. "I know that he interviewed with Miami, but that was when they were talking to everyone, and he told me he took his name out of consideration. When the Raiders job came open, he wasn't even interested."

Detroit Lions wide receiver Mike Furrey, a 1995 Hilliard High School graduate, led the NFC in receptions last season, catching 98 passes for 1,086 yards and six touchdowns.

Even though he plays in Detroit, Furrey said it feels in many ways like he still is connected to Columbus. He and his wife and their two small children are building a home in Plain City.

Furrey was a three-sport athlete for the Wildcats, earning three letters in football and basketball and four letters in baseball. In football, Furrey was first-team all-OCC, all-district and all-state in Division I his senior year and was invited to be a walk-on at Ohio State.

Furrey played nine games as a redshirt freshman and learned from playing behind receivers Terry Glenn and Demetrious Stanley. But after not being offered a scholarship after two years with the Buckeyes, Furrey began looking into transferring. He was "welcomed with open arms" at Northern Iowa.

Lions: Training camp

Stats matter little to Furrey

Veteran receiver, who led NFC in receptions in 2006 with 98, cares only about winning games.
ALLEN PARK -- Mike Furrey feels he is getting squeezed by a numbers crunch that will affect how many passes he catches.

He welcomes it. Less, for Furrey, will mean more production for the Lions' passing game.

There isn't another player in the NFL who is attracting less fanfare for what he did last year than Furrey. Furrey led the NFC with 98 receptions, but he has practiced under the radar in training camp.
