WR Mike Furrey -transfer to N. Iowa (official thread)

Furrey now on defense..

(On how Mike Furrey played in the nickel)- "I thought Furrey did pretty decent. That's a great player to break in with, Donald Driver. He caught an out route on him and really, that's about all the production Mike gave up. Mike Adams has been doing a good job at that spot too. It's a unique situation, to be able to have a guy that has the talent to play both ways and to be able to utilize him. He is such a smart guy that he can actually do that. We're going to continue to expand his role on defense and see what we have."

(On if it says something negative about the defensive backs that Furrey is used on defense)- "The days of the two-way player usually are done, but in Mike's case, I don't think it's a negative reflection about the defense. It's us willing to use whatever talent we have to help. Mike studies the game. He's a smart guy. Like I say, I think he's just going to help make us better."

Furrey honored

Safety/receiver Mike Furrey was picked as Cleveland?s Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee.

The award recognizes a player?s community service as well as his play. The three finalists from across the league will be announced next week and attend the Super Bowl for the announcement of NFL Man of the Year.

?I never felt it?s something we should be getting rewarded for,? Furrey said of community service. ?I believe it?s something we should be doing every day.

?It?s a great award and an honor to be in that list.?

Furrey, who earlier was voted the Ed Block Courage Award recipient by his teammates, has volunteered with the Cleveland Foodbank, Cleveland Christian Home, Cleveland Clinic Rehab Hospital, NFL Hometown Huddle and made numerous school visits. Furrey is the spokesman for Children?s Hunger Alliance and organized a toy drive over Christmas.

He was able to get enough toy donations - worth $45,500 - to fill a tractor-trailer, then delivered them to hospitals, homeless shelters and boys and girls homes.

?Some of the things that he?s done off the field are special,? Mangini said. ?To put something like the toy drive together and to make it such a nice event is a good indication of who he is and what he believes in. Hopefully that?ll be something that he wins because I think it?s great. It?s well-deserved.?

Furrey has started at safety and receiver this season. He?s third on the team with 23 catches for

170 yards and has 11 tackles and two pass breakups.

Furrey's fame is a blessing to many others

Mike Furrey helped out Thursday at a football clinic at the NFL Youth Education Town in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., part of his seemingly endless quest to help the less fortunate.

One question tires the otherwise always-energized Mike Furrey: when someone asks how he finds time to reach out to the underprivileged and undervalued, the dying and the despondent.

To Furrey, it is like inquiring how he finds time to breathe. There is no thought given to it. See a need, fill it. Simple as that.

That selfless attitude explains why the Cleveland Browns receiver/safety, who lives in West Jefferson, deflects credit for the charitable acts he carries out in Columbus, Cleveland and Detroit, where the seven-year NFL veteran spent three seasons before signing with the Browns as a free agent last May. It also explains why he feels honored but humbled to be one of three finalists for the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. The award recognizes a player's community service and playing excellence.

Furrey started on both offense and defense for Cleveland, catching 23 passes for 170 yards and making 14 tackles and two passes defended.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ? If Mike Furrey never gets to the big game, he will always have Super Bowl Week 2010.

Imagine how heady an experience it must be for Furrey, who has scrapped like crazy ? playing both wide receiver and defensive back this season for the Cleveland Browns ? just to keep his football life alive, to be one of three finalists for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

Imagine what it was like for him to be one of the stars of Friday?s news conference that was positioned between sessions for the two head coaches in Super Bowl XLIV.

Granted, Furrey is no Johnny Unitas, Len Dawson, Franco Harris, Dan Marino or any of the 12 other Pro Football Hall of Famers who have won the Man of the Year honor.

He is, however, hard to beat as a little guy who has achieved way bigger NFL playing success than he was supposed to while working at an All-Pro level on charity endeavors.

After stepping down from the stage at Super Bowl headquarters, Furrey put in perspective what it means to have a chance to win the award that will be announced shortly before the Colts square off against the Saints on Sunday.

?I was talking to a friend who won the award,? Furrey said. ?My friend won a Super Bowl and has been the league MVP. He was saying this award was the greatest thing he?s ever received.?

Cleveland Browns receiver Mike Furrey is awed to be an NFL Man of the Year finalist
By Tony Grossi
February 05, 2010

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Just being one of three finalists for the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award is an honor, said Browns receiver Mike Furrey.

But the depth of that honor really hit home when he spoke Thursday night with former teammate Kurt Warner, who won it last year.

"He's won the Super Bowl MVP and been the league MVP, and he said it's the greatest thing he's ever received in his career," Furrey said. "You're talking about a (future) Hall of Fame quarterback. That speaks volumes. It's the greatest award you can receive at this level."

John Dudley: Furrey multi-faceted for Browns

Wherever he speaks at schools in Cleveland this winter, kids ask Mike Furrey the same questions.

They want to know who's going to play quarterback, and they want to know how good the Browns are going to be.

Furrey doesn't have answers, but he has a hunch.

"You win the last four games going into the offseason, and that's pretty big," Furrey, 32, said just before the start of Wednesday's 46th annual Charity Sports Banquet at the Bel-Aire Clarion Hotel. "You can build on that. When I was in Detroit, we won one game at the end of the season ... and we started the next season 6-2. It definitely carries over."

If any franchise could use a fast start, it's the Browns, especially heading into yet another season of renewed hope sparked by the arrival of team president Mike Holmgren.

As is always the case with the Browns, questions abound.

Will Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson -- or someone else -- become the starting quarterback?

Can Jerome Harrison hold up for an entire schedule?

And what about Furrey, who led the NFC with 98 receptions in 2006 with the Lions but divided his time between receiver and safety in his first season with the Browns?

"Wherever they need me, I'll be ready," said Furrey, who said the breaking-in period under new coach Eric Mangini was a gradual process.

Browns player Mike Furrey scores with Olmsted Falls kids

JOANNE BERGER DUMOUND/SUN NEWS
Mike Furrey of the Cleveland Browns stressed to Bulldog students that filling up with ?good fuel? ? especially healthy breakfasts ? is an important part of each day. He said he always orders a large glass of milk when dining at restaurants.

Consider Mike Furrey?s visit to Olmsted Falls Middle School, the definite great play.

His positive message to youth tackled eating habits, inactivity and peer demands.

?It was inspiring,? said Parker Knapp, 13. ?I learned that you have to make your own goals for yourself and not to listen to other people?s perception of you.?

Furrey, who completed his first year with the Browns and ninth in the NFL, handed out milk to students during the school?s breakfast time before classes began. He then spoke at a school assembly.

The wider receiver/safety is the spokesperson for Children?s Hunger Alliance. He visits schools to speak on the importance of healthy food choices and staying active. He did just that last week at the Bulldog school in front of its 900-plus students. Furrey also visited North Olmsted Middle School last Friday.

Furrey admitted he ate terribly in his younger years but he was ?blessed? with a high metabolism.

A standout athlete at Hilliard Davidson High School in Ohio, his dream was to play professional football. But at his size ? 5-10 and 165 pounds ? and bench pressing only 175 pounds, no one recruited him. He decided to be a walk-on at The Ohio State University.

But the words of a high school art teacher ? ?you?ll never catch a pass? at OSU ? rang true although he did play in several games for the Buckeyes.

Mike Furrey placed on injured reserve

Veteran wide receiver Mike Furrey, sidelined after suffering a concussion early in training camp, has been placed on the season-ending injured-reserve list, a person familiar with the situation said Thursday.

Furrey, 33, did not return to training camp, which ended Thursday, after the injury Aug. 2. Coach Mike Shanahan said recently that the Redskins had not determined how to handle Furrey's situation on the roster, "but I'm sure when we do, we'll let you know something." The Redskins did not immediately have a comment about the roster move.

The Redskins signed Furrey in the offseason in an effort to bolster a receiving corps that includes many unproven players. With the Cleveland Browns last season, Furrey had 23 receptions for 170 yards. For the Detroit Lions in 2006, Furrey had 98 catches for 1,086 yards and six touchdowns.

Marshall football: Mike Furrey reportedly joining Herd staff
by Derek Redd
Sports writer

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- It looks like Marshall University has found another assistant football coach, one with eight seasons of NFL playing experience.

Mike Furrey has resigned as head coach at NAIA Kentucky Christian University and reportedly is headed to Marshall. Tim Carper, sports broadcaster for WUGO Radio and KCU Sports Radio, tweeted the news this morning. KCU Athletic Director Bruce Dixon confirmed that Furrey had resigned, but could not say where he was headed.

Furrey spent his collegiate and most of his pro career at wide receiver. The Thundering Herd is looking for a wideouts coach after Gerad Parker left to become tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Purdue.

A Hilliard, Ohio native, Furrey walked on to the Ohio State football team in 1995, then transferred to Northern Iowa in 1997. He sits second in career receptions (242), third in career yards (3,544) and fifth in career touchdowns (27) in Gateway/Missouri Valley Conference history.

Furrey joined the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2000, but was waived at the end of training camp. After one season with the XFL's Las Vegas Outlaws and two seasons with the Arena Football League's New York Dragons, he returned to the NFL, where he played for the St. Louis Rams, Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns as both wide receiver and safety. He led the Rams with four interceptions in 2005, and also led the NFC with 98 catches for the Lions in 2006.

He was named the Cleveland Browns' Ed Block Courage Award winner in 2009, and was a finalist in 2010 for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for his work with the Mike Furrey Foundation, which advocates for the basic needs of all people to be met.

Furrey retired in 2010 after suffering a career-ending concussion during the Washington Redskins' training camp.

He spent two seasons at KCU, leading the Knights to a 4-7 record in 2011, then a 7-4 record in 2012, winning five of their last six games.
