WR Michael Jenkins (All B1G, National Champion)

billmac91;1582611; said:
They recently resigned him, and he's never been a problem. Jenkins has been solid.....did anyone think he was a #1?? The guy has been solid almost every year in the league....and keep in mind he played with Michael Vick for 3 years, which is a WR stat killer.

There are only about 10 truly elite wide receivers in the NFL. Being a solid go to guy who you never have to worry about is an EXTREMELY huge asset to an NFL team. Jenkin's resigning with Atlanta shows that they do value him. They could have let him go and go for another big time weapon for Matt Ryan. But they like the big security blanket he provides and he has good chemistry.

Falcons' wide receiver Michael Jenkins has 33 catches for 386 yards this season.

FLOWERY BRANCH -- Only three Falcons remain from the team that played in the NFC Championship game after the 2004 season.

Center Todd McClure and wide receiver Brian Finneran played in the game against the Philadelphia Eagles, and wide receiver Michael Jenkins was a rookie on that Jim Mora-coached team.

Jenkins, a first-round pick in 2004, is playing in his sixth season in the NFL and has the third-longest tenure on the team. After signing a five-year contract extension last season, he hopes to be around awhile.

While Roddy White has emerged as a Pro Bowl receiver, Jenkins quietly has put together back-to-back seasons with 50 or more catches. Despite dropping an apparent touchdown pass last Sunday against the New York Giants, Jenkins caught a season-high six passes for 76 yards and vows that he can contribute more down the stretch.

In a conversation with the AJC, Jenkins discusses his time with the Falcons and how he hopes to finish the season.

Q: You are coming off a six-catch game, how did it feel to have your season-high?

A: It felt good to contribute. I made some good catches on third down. We are going to need that to win some football games down the stretch here.

Q: How do you stay alert as the third option in the passing game behind Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez?

A: Those guys are doing their jobs. [Quarterback] Matt [Ryan] is going to do a good job of spreading the ball ... and finding the open guy. When your number is called you have to make a play.

Q: Do you take pride in your downfield blocking?

A: Let's just say that it's a good feeling. We all want the big plays down the field and want to be effective in the passing game. But to have the running back go for 80 yards, that's a good feeling, too.

Q: What is your specialty route?

A: We do a good job with the pinch routes on the sidelines. Those have been something we always seem to hit. The skinny post is something that we've always hit very well.

Q: Being in the league six years, what are the keys to growing and sustaining a high level of play?

A: It's really about trying to be consistent and trying to get better every year. This day and age, it's staying out of trouble off the field. They are looking for character guys now. You have to keep your nose clean, do what's right and continue to be productive.

Q: How does the family like Atlanta?

A: They like it a lot. We are kind of far out, but they like the city and everything.

Q: What are some of the fun things you like to do with the family?

A: Of course, the kids [Brendan and Bryce] love Chuck E. Cheese. The jumpy places like Monkey Joe's. The movies and things like that.

Q: How much longer do you want to play?

A: Until they kick me out. I don't know. When I get to 10 years, we'll see what happens after that.

Q: How's [receivers] coach Terry [Robiskie] been?

A: He's a fiery guy. He's a great coach to play for. He wants us to be the best we can be, and that's all we can strive for. He makes it fun in the process.

Atlanta Falcons: Bird Cage Is Michael Jenkins a True #2?
July 23, 2010, by Dawson Devitt (D3)

Still Potential or Bust?

Will #12 Go Unchallenged? (nfl.com)

Nothing can draw out the ire and controversy more than one Mr. Michael Jenkins. On one hand, the wide receiver from Ohio State is a superb blocker and a true move-the-chains wideout. On the other hand, Mr. Jenkins has drawn the deep fury for never living up to his first round pick status. He?s caught a few big balls, but he?s most well-known for his huge drops and inability for taking advantage of having a Pro Bowl receiver on the other side in Roddy White. This one might take awhile, but let the contest run????

Falcons unsure of extent of WR Jenkins' injury

By GEORGE HENRY (AP)

SUWANEE, Ga. ? Atlanta Falcons receiver Michael Jenkins appeared to injure a shoulder during a team scrimmage on Friday night.

"I don't know the extent of it, but I think we'll know first thing in the morning," Falcons coach Mike Smith said. "We're encouraged by what we saw on the sideline there."

Jenkins, one of 11 offensive starters returning this season, fell hard to the ground on a long incompletion that Matt Ryan appeared to underthrow.

"I just kind of missed him," Ryan said.

Jenkins, a Falcons starter since 2005, stopped short of the 30-yard line and stepped upfield a couple of yards to try to catch the pass on Ryan's play-action fake to running back Jason Snelling.

The ball was thrown into zone coverage as Jenkins ran a left-to-right crossing route. Neither Smith nor Ryan indicated whether Jenkins might have run the route too deep.

Jenkins arose slowly and walked gingerly to the sideline to see the trainers.

"He's the only guy we're listing on our injury report," Smith said.

Falcons: Jenkins doesn't need surgery
August, 9, 2010
By Pat Yasinskas

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith talked after Monday morning?s joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the main topic was the shoulder injury to wide receiver Michael Jenkins.

Smith said the injury happened when Jenkins landed awkwardly on his shoulder in Friday night?s team scrimmage. Smith wouldn?t elaborate on the exact nature of the injury, but was adamant a report that surgery would be required was inaccurate. Smith said rest and rehabilitation should heal Jenkins? shoulder.

Smith stayed with the time frame of four to six weeks that the team first announced Sunday night. Smith said that should mean more first-team opportunities for Harry Douglas and Eric Weems when the Falcons open their preseason schedule at home Friday night with Kansas City. Smith also said rookie Kerry Meier probably will move higher in the rotation.

The time frame the Falcons are providing puts Jenkins? estimated return somewhere close to the regular-season opener with Pittsburgh. The Falcons aren?t going to get more specific than that because they need to see how Jenkins responds to surgery.

But fellow starting receiver Roddy White said he expects Jenkins to be back for the start of the season.

Jenkins on track

Wide receiver Michael Jenkins, who injured his shoulder during the "Friday Night Lights" scrimmage at North Gwinnett High School on Aug. 6, was doing light work at practice Tuesday, and coach Mike Smith said the timetable for his recovery of four to six weeks is looking on target.

"I think he's on track," Smith said. "You guys may have noticed, Mike was catching the ball, throwing the ball. I think that time frame we mentioned when the injury first occurred, I think we're still on schedule for that."

The team never has disclosed the extent of Jenkins' injury. If he misses six weeks, that potentially would have him ready for the Falcons' second game, at home against Arizona on Sept. 19.
