Falcons receivers look for big year with addition of Horn

The Associated Press - FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga.

Atlanta Falcons wideouts Roddy White and Michael Jenkins prefer not to dwell on the past, and new quarterback Joey Harrington will make sure they don't.

"I don't know last year," he said. "But I do know there are two guys who have worked their tails off. Despite what people say, I'd go to battle with Roddy and Mike right now. I told them that."

Even though Harrington has confidence in them, White and Jenkins still have something to prove. As the Falcons missed the playoffs for a second straight season, they were heavily criticized for not meeting expectation as former first round choices.

Numerous dropped balls and an inability to create big plays held White and Jenkins back last season.

Now, with the help of veteran Joe Horn, the two are looking to rejuvenate a unit that finished with some of the NFL's worst passing numbers last season.

So far in training camp, the usually quiet Jenkins has been more vocal. Going into his fourth year, he said he has gained confidence and learned how to carry himself on field after watching Horn, who is known to be outspoken.

"He knows the ropes and how to work during practice," Jenkins said. "I'm seeing the way he practices daily. Now, I'm trying to implement what I've seen and put it into my game."

Jenkins believes he and the other receivers can perform better than the numbers show after finishing 31st in yards after the catch and 13th in drops. The whole unit faced criticism, but it seemed that White got the worst of it.

Jenkins Excited About Falcons' Resurgent Passing Game

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - It didn't take very long for Joey Harrington to notice Michael Jenkins.

A fourth-year pro who starred at Leto High School before topping David Boston as Ohio State's leader in career receiving yards, Jenkins has made an immediate impression on Atlanta's new triggerman.

"Michael Jenkins is working his tail off," Harrington said after a recent sweltering afternoon practice. "I sense he's starting to grasp this offense very well. This kid has worked so hard. I can't wait to get out on the field with him during the regular season."

"It's all positive right now," said Jenkins, an angular 6-foot-4, 217-pound former track standout seeking to double last year's totals of 39 receptions and 436 yards. "Joey throws a real good ball and receivers love the new passing scheme. It's wide open, it's down the field. ? It's all about getting mismatches and putting the ball in our hands."

It'd be pretty cool to see Harrington, White, and Jenkins all have good years after being written off by the critics. They all have the potential to be good.

I guess I see this differently. I'm sad for Mike because he went from one lousy QB to another. I just don't see Harrington offering much, which is a shame for Mike. Good luck to both though.

Ask Roy Williams if he'd rather have Joey Harrington or Vick at QB. I'm not saying Harrington is good or that he will resurrect his career, but I do think Jenkins production will go up with Harrington over Vick even if it is slightly. Don't forget how good of a route runner Jenkins was in college. Can you imagine preparing every week to get better, only to have your QB not recognize what the defense is doing come game time. Hell Michael Vick probably couldn't even tell you what the fuck a route is, or why the hell a WR would change it mid-play. In Vicks mind he doesn't have to have the mental prep of ORGANIZED ball down since he's so darn athletic. That to me would be very discouraging if I were a WR on Vicks team.

On the other hand as a fan that would only want my team to win, I would go with Vick before Harrington.

Vick wasn't the greatest QB ever, obviously, but Jenkins has done himself no favors in ATL. He dropped numerous balls last year that hit him right in the hands. It is strange as he was so sure handed in C-bus but has had drop problems ever since hitting the NFL. He was the only Falcons being booed at home games at the end of last year. I hope Michael can turn it around this year.

Jenkins gains comfort dashing upfield
With a new stress on yards after the catch, receiver runs deep

Flowery Branch -- Falcons wide receiver Michael Jenkins has bought into the team's new offense and the strategy to get more yards after a catch.

Against Cincinnati in Monday's exhibition game, Jenkins flashed through zones, caught the ball on the move and then dashed upfield for extra yardage.

The plays stood out because Jenkins had been used differently in Greg Knapp's hybrid West Coast system. Because of his size at 6-foot-4, he was more of a stationary target or a deep ball threat.

"I feel very comfortable running across the middle, running drag routes and going deep," Jenkins said. "It's going to be fun playing receiver. We got a chance to catch the ball, get some runs after the catch and get some first downs."

Jenkins, who had a career-high 39 receptions and seven touchdowns last season, had four catches for 45 yards against the Bengals. Nothing spectacular, but there aren't too many defensive backs who want to see Jenkins charging, ready to dip a shoulder into his stomach.

"He had a heck of a game," said Hue Jackson, the Falcons' offensive coordinator. "I was very happy with him. It was good to see him have a good night."

I'm admittedly biased, but I think Joey got a raw deal in Detroit. Bad coaching, bad management, and a bad supporting cast. Some QB's take a while to blossom. I think he could have a solid year and then really build on it next year. He has some young talent around him in Atlanta and he himself is young. I wouldn't write him off as a bust just yet.

White chosen to start instead of Jenkins

Flowery Branch ? Wide receiver Roddy White has yet to live up to his first-round draft selection, but after a solid preseason, the team's top pick in 2005 will start opposite Joe Horn Sunday in the season opener at Minnesota.

Michael Jenkins, a 2004 first-round pick who has started the past two seasons, will be the No. 3 receiver and play mainly out of the slot. He could be deployed out wide in some of the offense's multitude of formations. Jenkins had a career-high seven touchdowns and 39 receptions last season.

"We feel good about the rotation we have," coach Bobby Petrino said.

White had nine catches for 93 yards in the preseason, tying second-year wide receiver Adam Jennings and rookie Laurent Robinson for team highs in receptions.

White has been plagued by dropped passes his first two seasons in the league ? he dropped a touchdown pass in a preseason victory over Cincinnati ? and he lost his starting job to Ashley Lelie last season.

Petrino said White, Horn, Jenkins and Robinson would comprise the four-receiver rotation against the Vikings. Jennings could also be used in some sets, Petrino said.

Well, Harrington wasn't horrible, but wasn't good either. And Jenks, well he didn't help matters at all with the bobble/interception. Not good all around.
