A former Ohio State wide receiver is transferring to Cincinnati for the second time this offseason.

L'Christian "Blue" Smith, who left the Ohio State football team this spring after one season with the Buckeyes, announced Thursday that he is transferring to Cincinnati to play for former Ohio State assistant coach Luke Fickell and the Bearcats.

Smith joins former Ohio State walk-on Garyn Prater, who announced his transfer to Cincinnatiearlier this month, as the second wide receiver to jump from the Buckeyes to the Bearcats after this spring.

A four-star recruit out of Wayne High School (Huber Heights, Ohio), Smith appeared in three games for the Buckeyes last season but played only five total offensive snaps. In a deep and talented wide receiver room at Ohio State, Smith didn't have a clear path to playing time for the Buckeyes, at least for 2019.

Unless he receives a waiver for immediate eligibility, Smith will be forced to sit out the upcoming season under NCAA transfer rules, after which he will have three remaining seasons of eligibility beginning in 2020.

Another Ohio State transfer will have a chance to take on the Buckeyes this year.

The NCAA has granted former Ohio State receiver L'Christian “Blue” Smith immediate eligibility at Cincinnati, setting up a meeting between Smith and his former team when the Bearcats come to Columbus in week two.

Smith is the second Ohio State transfer granted immediate eligibility with a 2019 opponent, joining Keandre Jones at Maryland, who received his waiver for immediate eligibility on Friday.

Unlike Jones, will likely start for the Terrapins this fall, Smith's role with the Bearcats this season remains unknown, but there's potential he could see the field during the Sept. 7 matchup.

A former four-star prospect rated as the No. 124 player in the country, Smith appeared in three games during lone season at Ohio State. He did not catch a pass, and totaled just five offensive snaps.

Depth chart as much as anything as far as we know. Nothing disciplinary that I've heard.

I’m just wondering what the excuse was that was given to the NCAA to be granted eligibility. I didn’t think “depth chart” would cut it. Obviously it seems like his 5 total snaps would be the real reason.

“IT SHOWS THEY STILL CARE.” I don't do this often (in fact, I'm not sure I ever have), mostly because I think it would be pretty lame for the Skull Session to turn into just an echo chamber our own work.

But I also know that recruiting features often only appeal to a niche audience, especially in the season, and I thought this bit from Zack's piece on 2022 athlete C.J. Hick was worth highlighting.

From our very own Zack Carpenter of Eleven Warriors:

Another cousin, L’Christian “Blue” Smith, was a four-star receiver from Huber Heights who signed with the Buckeyes and redshirted as a freshman. After one season, though, Smith transferred to Cincinnati and was granted immediate eligibility.

Smith still has good relationships with the Buckeye coaches, though, and Hicks couldn’t help but notice.

“At the end of the game, he hugged every single Ohio State coach,” Hicks said. “You don’t really see that, especially after they transfer.

“It shows that they still care. Even if you transfer like he did, or if you graduate, they’re still gonna keep in touch. Or if you need anything, they’ll help you. … He said he’s still in contact with the coaches, which is a good sign because even though he left, they still have love for him.”

I don't want to turn everything into a "holier than thou" moment, but I can't help but feel proud when I see this, especially compared to Michigan's off season transfer debacles that lived in the headlines for what seemed like weeks.

And I fully expect a similar moment when Keandre Jones comes back to town in November.

“IT’S A LONG TIME COMING”: FORMER OHIO STATE WIDE RECEIVER BLUE SMITH GRATEFUL TO FINALLY BE MAKING ON-FIELD IMPACT AT WESTERN KENTUCKY

More than five years after he started his collegiate career at Ohio State, Blue Smith finally scored his first collegiate touchdown last weekend.

In the first quarter of Western Kentucky’s eventual 52-22 win over Houston Christian, the sixth-year senior wide receiver was left open along the right sideline and caught a 20-yard pass in the end zone for six points.

After working his way toward that touchdown for more than a half-decade, the first emotion Smith felt after scoring was relief.

“It was like a big weight being lifted off my shoulders, if I'm being honest,” Smith said. “That's one that I wanted for a long time. My parents were in the stands, my little sister, so to be able to share that moment with them and to be able to share the moment with my teammates meant the world to me. Those guys kind of know what I've been through, how much I wanted it, so they were excited for me, man. It was awesome. It was awesome just to get a team win. So definitely blessed.”

Two games into the season at Western Kentucky, Smith has already caught more passes for more yards (eight catches for 88 yards and a touchdown) than he did in the first five years of his collegiate career combined (seven catches for 81 yards). It’s the first time that Smith has seen consistent playing time, as he appeared in only three games in his lone season as a Buckeye and saw only occasional action across four seasons at Cincinnati.

Transferring to Cincinnati came with a vision of a clearer path to the field and a bigger chance to make an impact, but that vision never materialized. When Luke Fickell left Cincinnati for Wisconsin at the end of last season, Smith entered the transfer portal again after learning that the Bearcats’ new coaching staff, led by Scott Satterfield, did not want him to return for his additional year of eligibility.

“If I'm being honest, they didn't want me back,” Smith said. “I had just graduated, new coach coming in. He had probably guys he wanted on his mind that he wanted to bring in. So I mean, I can't blame him. If I wanted to be there or not, it is a business. But I left, and (Western Kentucky assistant receivers coach Zak Mizell) hit me up, and now I'm here, and I thank them every day.”
