WR Kamryn Babb (Official Thread)

Kamryn Babb Working Hard Toward Return To Field

Babb was the No. 73 player overall in the 2018 recruiting class, one of 13 players ranked in the top-100 to sign with the Buckeyes that year. He came to Columbus with sky-high expectations, but has yet to step on the field during a game.

No one has questioned his talent; he simply hasn’t been able to stay healthy. He suffered a season-ending leg injury as a high school sophomore at Christian Brothers College in St. Louis, and then again as a senior.

Babb arrived at Ohio State in the summer of 2018 ready for a fresh start, and then immediately tore his ACL during a non-contact workout a couple weeks later. He redshirted that year as he recovered.

With all the other "highly ranked" receivers and Kamryn Babb not yet seeing the field, he is kind of the forgotten guy in the "WR room". The good news it that he still has 3 more years to show what he can do, maybe even 4 more with a "medical" 6th year.

Kamryn Babb

When people talk about Ohio State’s offense heading into 2020, almost all of the discussion is surrounding Justin Fields and the talented group of Buckeye wide receivers. With Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson returning, along with an embarrassment of riches being added in the 2019 recruiting class, there is a lot to like about the OSU passing game moving forward. However, while fresh faces like Julian Fleming and Jaxon Smith-Njigba get all the hype, there is another guy flying under the radar whose yet to take the field in Columbus: Kamryn Babb.

Now, there may be some Ohio State fans that are unaware of who Kamryn Babb is, and would be surprised to see he will be a redshirt sophomore this upcoming season. While he doesn’t exactly fit the bill of the two previously listed underdogs — as he was a four-star prospect and the No. 73 recruit in the nation in 2018 — his path has been much more rocky. Despite joining the program over two years ago, his debut has been put on hold after two knee injuries have kept him on the sideline.

If he can stay healthy, Babb would become almost like another incoming big recruit for the Buckeyes — one that has been able to study the playbook for two full seasons. A talented wide receiver in a room with a bunch of competition, there's a real chance he could be a legitimate No. 3 or No. 4 receiver for Ohio State in 2020 given his familiarity with the scheme and staff. After being named one of the team’s most improved players in winter conditioning back in March, let’s hope Babb gets to make his long awaited debut in Scarlet and Gray this year.

It’s impossible not to root for this kid to finally get the chance to show out.

Just sayin': Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson will probably be at the top of the "WR food chain"; however, a lot more guys will get significant playing time too. The WR room will be full of 4 & 5 star guys that can catch the ball, I'm saying the difference maker will be route running and blocking (especially blocking).

“He’s participating in all training,” Ohio State strength coach Marotti said in January. “Great kid, he’s been a great kid. Great person, great worker, great teammate — he’s so positive, it’s been awesome. He’s the best of the best.”

After suffering knee injuries in each of the last two offseasons, Babb has yet to play a single snap at the collegiate level, and as a result, it’s hard to make any projection for the rest of his Ohio State career. But if Babb can finally stay healthy and show he still has the talent that made him one of the top wide receiver prospects in the recruiting class of 2018, he just might be a dark-horse candidate to emerge as an impact playmaker for the Buckeyes over the next three years.

WR Kamryn Babb
The Buckeyes have been quietly optimistic that Kamryn Babb would finally be ready to flash his dynamic skills at wide receiver this year, and it’s understandable why they wouldn’t want to speak too loudly and jinx the progress after his almost-unthinkable run of bad injury luck.

But just one picture of Babb soaring through the air to make a catch on Thursday morning spoke volumes, offering an early sign that he could really be on the brink of a breakout for the Buckeyes. With Ohio State needing to replace three receivers on the depth chart for the second season in a row, the emergence of Babb given his familiarity with the offense and the maturity that was needed to persevere could be a huge boost.

KAMRYN BABB, WR
Even though Babb was sidelined for the entirety of his first two seasons at Ohio State due to knee injuries, there’s now a chance he could still end up playing four seasons for the Buckeyes.

While Babb, like Justin Hilliard, probably would have been a candidate to receive a rare sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA because he missed two full seasons due to injury, he won’t have to worry about the uncertainty of that process now, and he’s got plenty of time to still make his mark in Ohio State’s offense.

Although it’s hard to know what to expect from Babb until he finally gets his long-awaited opportunity to play in a game for the Buckeyes, he was a top-75 national recruit out of high school who arrived at Ohio State with high expectations. The Buckeyes are loaded with young talent at receiver and have more coming in next year, so earning a spot in the rotation won’t necessarily get any easier with time, but he could be a candidate to make a bigger impact in his fifth or sixth year than in either 2021 season simply because he’s been out of action for so long.

“Kam Babb has been through just an amazing couple years here,” Ryan Day said on 97.1’s Buckeye Roundtable on Monday. “We're hopeful that he's going to be able to play for us this season. He's done such a great job and kept such a great attitude. He's gone through several of these ACLs. He could be an amazing story one day. So really proud of the work he's done.”

“I think Kam Babb is a special individual,” Hartline said on Tuesday. “Any time he's around the team or in the room or on the field, he's going to bring a dynamic that is special. I think that he's a great young man, a great football player, an even better young man. I think that we're blessed to have him here. Great to see him out there catching footballs, making plays.

“I'm very excited to see what his future holds.”
