K.J. Hill's Journey From Arkansas to Buckeye Hearts
It only took four minutes and 20 seconds for K.J. Hill to make his mark at Ohio State. The Buckeye wide receiver adjusted to the play and caught his first career touchdown pass on his first career reception against Bowling Green.
“The original play was a run play,” Hill explained. “They played zero coverage so J.T. checked it to an isolation with me on the safety. So I locked him up, stacked him, he threw the ball and I caught the ball.”
It was the first score of the season for the Scarlet and Gray, a 47-yard chuck that introduced K.J. Hill to Buckeye Nation.
“I didn’t think I was going to be that guy,” he admitted. “But I got put in that position to do it so I just made the most of it.”
For those in the stands and watching on television, it seemed like a quick introduction to the redshirt freshman receiver early in the first game of the season, but in reality it was over a year in the making.
Hill’s collegiate story really began in late August of 2014 when the North Little Rock, Arkansas committed to his state school. As the top-ranked player in Arkansas, Razorback head coach Bret Bielema was happy to have the speedy receeiver as a member of his 2015 class.
As fate would have it, the wheels were already in motion for Hill’s debut touchdown reception for the Scarlet and Gray.
Razorback defensive coordinator, and one of Hill’s primary recruiters, Chris Ash was hired by Ohio State in January 2014 and helped the Scarlet and Gray win a national championship that same year.
After taking his allotment of visits following his commitment to Arkansas, Hill made a call to Ash to see if a spot for him at OSU remained.
“I made that call because I know how special it is at Ohio State and with Coach (Urban) Meyer,” Hill said. “I know Coach Meyer is a receiver freak so I know I want to be the best receiver in the country so I know he could get me there. So that was basically my mindset.”
