WR Joey Galloway (Official Thread)

If he can stay healthy, yes. Moss + Welker + Galloway in a pass friendly system with Tom Brady, great blocking, and possibly more of a running game than they've had in recent memory (healthy Maroney and Fred Taylor). Scary.

Joey Galloway is a nice catch
Veteran WR on board in Foxboro
By John Tomase / Patriots Notebook
Sunday, March 15, 2009

The Resurrection Train is pulling into Gillette Stadium with another passenger: Joey Galloway.

The veteran wide receiver agreed to a one-year deal with the Patriots [team stats] yesterday that will bring him to camp to compete for the No. 3 wide receiver job with recently acquired Greg Lewis.

?This is a special opportunity to play for a premier owner, organization, team and coach,? said Shawn Trell, Galloway?s agent.

The 37-year-old Galloway ranks 25th all time in receiving yardage with just more than 10,000, but he?ll be looking to bounce back after an injury-marred 2008 season with Tampa Bay.

Foot ailments limited the former Ohio State standout to just 13 catches for 138 yards, and he was released by the Bucs on Feb. 25. He had topped 1,000 yards in each of the previous three seasons, however, and for his career has caught 77 touchdowns and averaged almost 16 yards a reception.

?He?s 100 percent healthy and remained the Bucs? fastest player at the end of last season,? Trell said. ?This isn?t his last season. Joey has been blessed with tremendous ability, but it is his work and training habits that have allowed him to play in the NFL as long as he has. This organization doesn?t make this move if they don?t believe he still has plenty left.?

He won?t have the pressure of being a No. 1 target with the Pats, who are looking for someone to complement Randy Moss and Wes Welker. When healthy, Galloway has traditionally been considered one of the top deep threats in the game, and now he?ll have Tom Brady [stats] throwing him passes.

?Playing with Tom Brady, Randy Moss and Wes Welker is certainly compelling and was clearly part of the decision-making process,? Trell said.

Scouts Inc.: Signing Galloway a nice move for Pats
March 15, 2009
Posted by Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson

On Saturday, free-agent wide receiver Joey Galloway agreed to a one-year contract with the New England Patriots. Although Galloway is 37 years old and was a nonfactor with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, this was a very good signing for the Patriots.

Yes, Galloway caught a measly 13 passes in 2008. But he eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving in each of the previous three seasons. Galloway did appear in nine games last season, but was rarely at full strength during those appearances. He fell out of favor in then-head coach Jon Gruden's offense and took a back seat to Antonio Bryant.

With a player his age, New England would be wise to limit his snaps and keep him fresh for the stretch run. Bill Belichick sees the big picture as well as any head coach and surely will see the value in limiting the wear and tear on Galloway's body. Obviously Randy Moss and Wes Welker are in place in this high-flying passing attack, but behind those two, New England had little that stirred excitement.

Galloway is not a long-term fix, obviously, and the Patriots very well could select a wideout with one of their four draft picks in the top two rounds. Galloway knows how to set up a defensive back, reads and reacts to coverages well and can threaten a defense at every level. He will be a good influence on a rookie wideout.

Galloway's best asset is still his home-run ability, a trait a healthy Tom Brady should exploit. Jeff Garcia, Galloway's quarterback last season, is not a strong-armed passer or much of a risk taker, preferring underneath routes. Even so, Galloway did average more than 17.0 yards per reception in each of the 2006 and 2007 seasons and has the run-after-the-catch explosion to take a short pass a long way.

In New England, Galloway is going to run a lot of streak and post routes -- and often against single coverage. The other teams in the AFC East are not particularly deep at the cornerback position. Galloway is still capable of abusing average cover men when he is healthy and fresh. Needless to say, Brady is not bashful about throwing the long ball and few do it as well. Expect big plays. This signing is just one more reason why I expect to see the Patriots back in a huge way in 2009.

QB stability brought Galloway to Patriots
By Christopher L. Gasper
Globe Staff / March 21, 2009

After 14 NFL seasons, three teams, and numerous quarterbacks, Joey Galloway was looking for a Super Bowl contender with a stable situation under center. That the wide receiver chose to sign with the Patriots speaks volumes about the health of Tom Brady.

Bottom line, Galloway wouldn't be a Patriot if he thought Brady, who tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee in New England's 2008 season opener, wasn't going to be healthy enough to lead the Patriots back to NFL elite status.

Galloway was practically giddy yesterday when talking about playing with Brady.

"I've been a fan of his for a long time," said Galloway, who also visited the Steelers and Bills after the Buccaneers cut him Feb. 25, ending a five-year stint with Tampa Bay. "I've been a fan of the team, of the organization, Mr. [Robert] Kraft, from top to bottom. I've always looked forward to an opportunity to get into a situation with stability at quarterback, which has always been something I've hoped for and going into this opportunity I looked for in my decision-making.

"Once the opportunity came to have a chance to play with Tom Brady, I don't think you can do any better than that."

Joey Galloway's contract
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 23, 2009

The contract signed by veteran receiver Joey Galloway is a one-year package with a base salary of $1.15 million.

The contract is for more than the minimum for a player of Galloway's experience, which indicates that Galloway had some negotiating leverage. He had also visited with the Bills and the Steelers in free agency.

Joey Galloway contract follow-up with Pats
Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 1, 2009

It was previously reported here that WR Joey Galloway's contract with the Patriots was a one-year package with a $1.15 million base salary.

Galloway's deal also includes a $600,000 signing bonus. That puts his salary cap charge at approximately $1.75 million for the 2009 season.

The contract reflects, among other things, how the Patriots view the 37-year-old Galloway as a strong candidate to become their No. 3 receiver.

Peter King > MONDAY MORNING QB

Galloway had a bad foot (since recovered) last year, started only four games in Tampa, and comes north with doubts that he can stay healthy. On the plus side: He played in 47 of 48 Bucs games from 2005 through 2007.

Funny to think of in this way, but the key to a great offensive season for New England might actually be the fleet Galloway, who I'm told is running in the 4.4s even at 38. Imagine splitting a healthy Galloway and Moss wide to either side, with Welker in the slot and a good receiver like Kevin Faulk in the backfield. There are going to be some tough coverage assignments for a defense with those receivers playing as a group.

Joey Galloway quick to catch on

FOXBORO - Though the gray hairs in his beard might suggest otherwise, Joey Galloway has no intentions of slowing down.

Coming off an injury-marred, 13-catch 2008 campaign, the speedy wide receiver is eager to begin the 15th season of his career.

?I didn?t check the gauge, but I feel great,? Galloway said after yesterday?s organized team activities at the Gillette Stadium practice fields. ?I?m excited. I feel good physically and mentally, and I?m looking forward to it.?

The Patriots [team stats] signed the 37-year-old to a one-year contract in March after he was released by Tampa Bay. A foot injury limited Galloway to nine games and four starts last season, but that problem is behind him and he is looking forward to a new start with the Pats.

?It feels pretty good,? Galloway said. ?There?s a lot of work to do, just trying to learn my position and getting used to playing with these guys.?

Galloway figures to have the inside track on the No. 3 receiver spot opened by Jabar Gaffney [stats]?s free agent departure to Denver, but he?ll leave that decision up to Bill Belichick. For now, he is focused on picking up the Patriots offense.

?Every system I?ve been in has been different, and I?ve been in a lot of them,? said Galloway, who also played in Seattle, Dallas and Tampa Bay. ?Each team has its own set of goals for their offense. This one is just another one I?ve got to learn and get used to.?

New Patriots' receiver Joey Galloway

FOXBORO - Joey Galloway probably feels as if he's in heaven.

After 14 seasons in the NFL, the veteran wide receiver not only is playing for a team where he had a legitimate chance to win a Super Bowl ring, he's part of a team culture where the standard operating procedure for dealing with the media is to say only enough that you don't put your foot in your mouth.

For instance, the 37-year-old Ohio State alum was asked Tuesday at the Patriots' organized team activity if he relished the opportunity to play for a Super Bowl ring this season.

"It would be nice to learn the offense, then get a day off tomorrow and to come back and practice on Thursday. I'm going to try to make it through to finding a place to have dinner tonight," he said.

But it wasn't a smart-alecky response; Galloway was smiling and seemed to be having a little fun with the coaching that he and all other Patriots receive from the master at spin control, Bill Belichick. "Coach Belichick does a really good job of reminding us that our goal right now is just to take a day off tomorrow, rest our bodies and get ready for Thursday," Galloway said. "That's as far as the goal goes."

Goals and expectations often run rampant when fans look at the return of a healthy Tom Brady, the presence of Randy Moss and Wes Welker in the receiving corps, and the addition of a veteran who, by all reports, can still bring a 40-yard-dash in the 4.4-second vicinity to the table.

"I stay away from that talk," Galloway said. "It doesn't matter a whole lot ... I have a job to do, which is to learn the offensive system and get ready to play football."

After five years in Seattle, four in Dallas and five in Tampa, Galloway clearly brings a veteran's perspective to his preparation. He's a true greybeard, with more than a few flecks of white whiskers mixing into his beard - which is probably why he has a full appreciation of how fortunate he is to be in a position to contribute to a new team after 682 catches and 10,710 yards (or roughly 6.13 miles).

Joey Galloway has numbers
By Glen Farley
GateHouse News Service
Posted Jun 12, 2009

FOXBORO ? The years are reflected in Joey Galloway?s face; tinges of gray are evident in a closely cropped beard.

It?s official.

The New England Patriots have themselves a new graybeard.

At 37 (he?ll turn 38 in November) and entering his 15th NFL season, the veteran wide receiver is one up in both departments on linebacker Tedy Bruschi, the career-long Patriot who turned 36 on Tuesday and will be entering his 14th year with the team.

?It?s fair to say that I?ve been blessed with the ability to play for 15 seasons,? said Galloway.

?I think that a lot of guys would love to play as long as they could possibly play. It just so happens that I?ve been blessed to go for No. 15 this year, and I?m happy about it and looking forward to it.?

Galloway?s career goes well beyond longevity, as over the course of his time with Seattle (1995-1999), Dallas (2000-2003) and Tampa Bay (2004-2008), he has hauled in 682 passes for 10,710 yards and 77 touchdowns.

For all the numbers he?s put up, though, the 5-11, 197-pounder has yet to latch on to a Super Bowl ring. That was part of the allure after the Buccaneers released him Feb. 25, following a season in which a foot injury limited Galloway to 13 receptions in nine games. Some wondered if the years might finally be catching up to him.

?We all want to win, whether it?s here or anywhere else,? said Galloway, who is vying for the No. 3 receiver spot on Bill Belichick?s depth chart behind Randy Moss and Wes Welker. ?At the end of the last season, when I had a chance to go anywhere, this team was at the top of my list.

?Thankfully, that worked out and I?m here, and I?m looking forward to the opportunity to go out and compete with these guys.?
